Nice words from Peppe Trotta at “So What?”
From this strident dialogue springs a hybrid landscape for sonority and atmosphere, an indefinite electroacoustic territory that opens onto contemplative scenarios centered on solemn drones drawn by the organ and slowly turned towards dark visions crossed by nervous crackles. The sound remains airy but constantly flexes alternating luminous peace and profound restlessness, depriving the listener of fixed points and inviting him to let himself be carried away by an enveloping sensorial tide with no solution of continuity.
A fascinating journey into music based on abandoning a deeply stimulating immersive listening

loneliness as a game mechanic
so obviously the big one when you wanna think about this is minecraft, even though minecraft has extensive multiplayer stuff, arguably the most poignant moments is when you look up, realizing how far away you are from home, as notes of Sweden drift away
i honestly don't have the adjectives to describe that feeling, but gives an otherwise bland blocky game heaps of emotion and story, practically from thin air
another personal favorite of mine is astroneer, probs not as well known as minecraft so heres some vibes:
its a really similar emotion to those moments in minecraft, when youre deep under the surface of an unknown world, your own footsteps the only sound, or when driving a buggy across the surface, nothing but alien life all around, the only sign of humans is the crashed satellite embedded into the mountain
my instinct is to call this feeling ennui, but i know that isnt right at all, just the sound of the word fits i think. A satisfaction, mixed with a melancholy, and a hint of sadness, youre proud to have made it this far, glad to be somewhere new, but sad since this new place seems to be all there is
i really dont know, explaining simple emotions is hard for me and this one is pretty complex
anyways
i wanna talk about how different games use this idea in a different way, in particular, horizon zero dawn
firstly: this game is sick highly recommend playing it
its got robots, its got general sci fi nonsense, bows and arrows, an awesome, beautiful world, and a great story
spoilers for horizon zero dawn
so through this game, aloy discovers all sorts of things about the old world, and what brought around its end, at first its a little unclear if you actually are on earth or not, until you encounter some the ancient ruins scattered around the map
these ruins are unmistakably human, pieces of highway, old streets and skyscrapers. and its honestly wild to experience the last pieces of my version of humanity through the eyes of aloy, who sees this place as the beginnings of her version of humanity
but aloy, who starts the game as an outcast from her people is less inclined towards the beliefs and customs of the Nora. in her curiousness and tenacity, she embodies the humans of the old world
but she is more than just an embodiment of those ideals, she literally is part of the players version of humanity
aloy is a clone of elisabet sobek, effectively the savior of humanity. while the game doesn't confirm this until like 40 hours in, one of the first things you learn from old technology is that aloy is a DNA match with elisabet, so while aloy doesn't know this, its pretty clear to the player
so all of aloys outcast mannerisms are only further enunciated by this,
aloy is literally an artifact of the old world, just as much as the player is
the more she learns about elisabet, the old world and its secrets, the farther she feels from her people
around the world are things called vantage caches, little snippets of audio and a picture from the old world. these little pieces of story are a strange lens to the past, aloy sees history, her history. but the player sees the place they are now (not like, that second but that world, y'know)
anyways
i think that horizon zero dawn utilizes a similar feeling of loneliness that minecraft uses, but rather than as a feeling that encompasses the game, its something more dynamic, something that grows over the course of the game, and becomes something that changes how you view the elements of the world, and the people in it
so even though aloy makes freinds and enemies during the story, its a little hard to relate to them, since aloy and the player are more invested in the main story, the details of which kinda take place out of sight of the average person. but that difficulty feels intentional, something designed
and this is the thing that really makes me wanna know more about this emotion, originally i thought it was exclusive to empty games, ones that emphasize the distance (geographically) that the player is from what they might consider home. but horizon zero dawn creates that same feeling but through emotional distance, and even nurtures that feeling through gameplay and characters

Dirk Serries / Tom Malmendier / Rutger Zuydervelt - Part One
From the album Epitaph. Live At Roadburn Redux 2021, out on Burning World Records Country: Belgium/Belgium/Netherlands Genre-approximation: improvised ambient From the notes: "Huge harmonic drones will be infused with the abstract dynamics of drums, and the piercing, subliminal electronics to create something truly experimental and improvised. Dirk describes this performance as “the dwelling place, the moment of contemplation; a space to enter and shed off burdens”. We’re ready." Andrea Belfi & Machinefabriek – Pulses & Places (2009)
“This ninth release in the Brombron series (hosted by Korm Plastics) comes from the absurdly prolific Machinefabriek and Italian electro-acoustic musician Andrea Belfi. For this project, Rutger Zuydervelt plays guitar and organ, while Belfi concentrates on drums and assorted percussive instruments. While the mood of the music is consistent with Machinefabriek's propensity towards atmospheric, detailed ambience, there's a markedly more organic aspect to this music that sets it apart from most of the Dutch composer's collaborations. The presence of Belfi's live, acoustic drums puts a very different slant on this music, bringing a kind of swaying, somnolent rhythm to the first piece, while Zuydervelt's layered drones map out a woozy trail. ...”
