I recently played a demo for the fan game/rom hack “SUPER MARIO CD” and….
OHHHH MY GODDDDD I LOVVVEEEEE ITTTTT
Like it feels like on giant and weird (in a good way !) love letter to 80’s/90’s Mario .
Everything from the visuals, the music, and the
g a m e p l a y
It’s all so good that I HAD to draw it and this may be my most background heavy picture I’ve made lol. The colors and pallets were fun to use on this one =].
They have a blog you should check it out if the project interest you: https://www.tumblr.com/famicomcd

I've been working on a Mario 64 Romhack! Mario Goes Skateboarding 64! Based on the real skateparks I go to!
Here's a vid comparing the real life Toberin Skatepark with the replica I've done in-game! I'm even wearing red to look a bit like Mario! I've been very earnest in replicating them as well as I can, I'm even replicating some of my fave graffiti!

The hack will feature 4 levels with 14 stars total! I'm nearing complletion and I'm super excited to be able to share a playable game where people get to enjoy real-life locations that have a v special place in my heart!

Apologies that work on Peach's Adventure DX has been stagnant recently, motivation has been low and work has been tiring;
But, for about the past week, I've been doing a lot of under-the-hood stuff to get things looking more polished and running smoothly on console.
So for now, recorded from console, here's 1-1 again, and part of 1-2 (that will be scrapped and redone XD) Hope to be working on more actual levels and graphics pretty soon here!

Alright, let's get pretentious.
I've come to start resenting those super popular Mario 64 hacks as of late, like B3313, the multiplayer mod, Mario 64 with Shotgun.
People came out of the woodworks making videos and articles about them, and I kinda hate how those are now "the mainstream", relatively speaking.
And it also sucks because they're all great hacks! But the fact that that if you asked most (relevant) people to think of what a Mario 64 hack is, it's either just the base vanilla game "with a wacky YouTube Content-y™ Twist" and/or within the ballpark of just creepypasta (/derogatory)/beta content.
Aside from Star Road back in 2011, which while groundbreaking had some pretty mixed design, the general online populous who even still cares about Mario 64 have no idea about the game's entire massive & passionate modding scene, full of incredible and original standalone experiences, both in gameplay and narrative, for free.
Elise, a beautiful Yume Nikki-like with cutscenes and voice acting, borrowing the base game's sense of exploration as a jumping off point.
SM64 Kingdom's End, a genuinely haunting story about Mario struggling until the last moment to save a dying world.
Mario Party 64, our childhood dream of wishing we could play in the boards & minigames of Mario Party like an actual platformer brought to life.
Detective Mario: Murder on Ice, mapping the genre of text-based murder mystery (complete with typing in commands) into a 3D Mario level with surprising twists and required deduction skills.
Mario breaks EVERY BONE IN HIS BODY (case sensitive), a hilarious Monkey Ball-like
Ceaseless Climb, exploring a tricky, warped reality beyond the game's infamous Infinite Staircase
My Dress-Up Darling 64 which, and I quote from the game's Romhacking.com page's description, "being the first hack to use HVQM full-motion video"
There's rhythm games, Zelda-likes, horror games, shitposts, puzzlers, slide hacks, what-ifs, massive collabs, the absurdly sized Star Revenge *series*, huge hacking competitions with cash prizes and often dozens/hundreds of submissions meant to incentivize newcomers to try, Mario slips on a banana peel and fucking dies 64, and literally hundreds more I could name
I'm just really passionate about this little niche internet community, and I'm sad it only got the thinnest spotlight once a tiny piece of it ended up being profitable for content creators. There's so much more than what most people see.
Besides. It's free video games; Surely that alone makes it worth checking out, right...? Everything is suuuper accessible/user-friendly nowadays~

Princess Peach fanart featuring her 'King of the Forest' design from Coronation Day. Gotta say the ROM hack this is from is pretty good, if people haven't checked it out already, they totally should.

I played Mario 64 when it came out in 1997. It was, and for me still is, the best game of all time. I got all 120 stars. I knew it's worlds in and out.
It was one of those games that developed a lot of playground lore. A secret area behind the waterfall. Luigi can be unlocked if you run circles around the courtyard pond 150 times. Flying into the stained glass window on the castle to meet Peach. Actually reaching and exploring the Wet-Dry World skybox city. I recall when I saw a gaming mag screenshot with a 182 star count - I flipped out! What secrets was everyone hiding?? (that particular one they confessed was because they used an Action Replay cheat cart after an unfortunate save-game wiping incident). I remember noticing big differences in the final game to many of the early screenshots in magazines. The castle was different outside and in. Or was it other floors I hadn't found yet?
Then the internet came along, and with it endless doctored screenshots and insane lore. Wario's floating head, L is real, etc etc.
B3313 is like finding a secret copy of the Shoshinkai 1995 beta demo of Mario 64... but instead of being a couple of unfinished demo levels, it's a full game. A full game which is cursed, first subtly then eventually overtly. A full game far larger than vanilla Mario 64. It feels as if it goes on forever, with around 400 stars to collect. Multiple repetitions of familiar words become more and more warped. You'll see the aftermath of war on Bob-omb Battlefield. You'll meet the people of Wet-Dry World before and during the endless cycle of death Mario brings. Even the time of day you play it affects what happens, because somehow a Mario romhack file accesses your PC's clock. It's the demo I wanted to play. It's the playground lore come to life. It's amazing.
