Eurovision 2005 - Number 63 - Marina Rei - "Fammi entrare"

The Festival di Sanremo had undergone another revolution for 2005. After the changes brought in for 2004 led to record low viewing figures, RAI acted quickly. Not only did they bring in Paolo Bonolis and Gianmarco Mazzi to take over the show running and artistic direction, but they completely shook up the schedule.

For this Sanremo, there were four semi-finals and five groups. A group for the men, the women, the groups, the 'Classic' section and a newcomers section - only three acts could get through from each group to the traditional big Saturday final. I'm unsure if this was to ensure representation in the final or if was to move Sanremo closer to the type of division of acts that went on in the X Factor.

Either way, one of the groups consisted of five female acts, one of whom was Marina Rei. She's the daughter of Ennio Morricone's drummer and had been singing in the clubs of Rome since she was 18. 2005 is her fourth Sanremo, having debuted in 1996 in the New Proposal's category and finished third. She also won the 1997 Un disco per l'estate competition with a cover of the Real Thing's You to Me Are Everything rendered as Primavera in Italian.

Marina is well versed at this, in complete contrast to the selection for the 2004 Sanremo, 2005 is back to the bigger names. For Fammi Entrare (Let Me In) she is joined on stage by pianist Riccardo Sinigallia to sing a song about a devoted couple, very much in love who nevertheless have a barrier between them. Now there's trouble and Marina wants to help, she wants to be allowed to share the burdens. The song builds to a climax with smooth legato strings and more conventional rock instrumentation building a base of drama underneath Marina's pleas. Resolution isn't reached, with the last line being:

Con il buio cadrà la notte

With darkness, night will fall.

It's a song filled with anguish and desperation to save something and someone from the precipice.

Marina really sells this - she's living it on the Ariston stage with a variety of percussion instruments for her to use to assist with scene setting. It's beautiful.

Fammi Entrare wasn't supposed to be the song that Marina sang at Sanremo this year. Another song Song'je - her first song sung in Neopolitan dialect - was lined up to be sung with Francis DiBella, but apparently regulations meant she had to switch. I'm unsure what those regulations were.

Unfortunately, Marina wasn't one of the three female acts to make it through to Saturday and she was eliminated at the semi-final stage. This disappointment also marks Marina's final competitive performance at Sanremo. She did appear again, as a guest in 2008 singing with regular collaborator Max Gazzè, and again as a guest in 2014 returning the favour by singing with Riccardo Sinigallia.

Happily though, this Sanremo barely marks the half-way mark in what has been a stellar music career for Marina. After this she left the major Italian labels to which she had been signed and began to manage her own output and signed to an independent label OPM. The album containing both Fammi Entrare and Song'je was released by them later the same year.

Continuing throughout the 21st century, she's released album after album, performed, toured and collaborated with numerous other Italian singers and composers. Her most recent recorded releases were in 2022.
