Ashlyn Banner

Solitaire: A major part of her character is learning how to balance her introverted nature with opening up to others. I like how she isn't shamed for being a private person, though, just encouraged to give others a chance, so I'm giving her the song about that.

Oh No!: Ashlyn is a very confident person as far as we've seen (though there are still some insecurities she has to work through) who isn't going to change her entire self for some random kid. Oh No! fits that kinda in that Ashlyn has flaws, but she is aware of them and she decides what's worth trying to change.

Aiden Clark:

Too Afraid: Aiden. Buddy. CHILD. He is incredibly extroverted, outgoing, social, and tends to take up the spotlight wherever he goes. This isn't a bad thing in its own light, however we've seen that it's largely become a coping mechanism for him. This kid's mind is or at the very least WAS in a very dark place before, and it's being repressed largely (at least, that's what it seems like.)

Primadonna: Like the exact same thing as above. Takes up the spotlight because the minute you stop off the stage, what's left?

Ben Clark:

I Am Not a Robot: Ben is a very stoic-seeming character. We've gotten to know him and he's a gentle, kind-hearted, nervous, and sweet person, albeit one with astoundingly destructive and angry tendencies. A bit part of his character, to me, has been seeing him balance not allowing his rage to run away with him but also not bottling up until it overflows. He is NOT a robot.

Valley of The Dolls: Yeah this song's about a book I've never read so uhhhhh ANYWAYS. Ben's past self was ANGRY. He was hurt and upset. No matter how many people he fought, or how much it hurt, he couldn't feel better, if anything at all. There was an emptiness he couldn't heal. Maybe it's still there. But he's healing.

Logan Fields:

Karma: I think this song could fit his relationship with his bully (Baron or Barron? Can't remember how to spell it), especially in the arcade fight scene (LOVED IT). Baron has been getting away with horrific acts simply because nobody knew, but now that it's come to light, now that Logan is stronger, now that he has people in his corner, karma's coming.

The Family Jewels: I'm concerned about Logan's home life, honestly. We don't know (as far as I'm aware) why he lives with his grandparents. Did something happen to his parents? Is he an orphan? Is he not with them for another reason? Also, what's going on with his grandparents? Is it because they're florists that they have access to painkillers and sedative type drugs, or another reason?

Taylor Hernández:

Orange Trees: I don't even know. I just really like the song. And I really like Taylor. And i think she would vibe to it. Taylor has a really fun personality and I think this fits her.

Can't Pin Me Down: On a more serious note, oftentimes Taylor (by both characters and the fandom, myself included) is unfortunately reduced to "aww happygolucky bestgirl!" Especially after Tyler's tragedy, we've gotten to see a new side of her: fierce loyalty and pure anger that stems from her kindness. She's going off the rails and I LOVE this for her, but I can only hope she doesn't lash at out the wrong people.

Tyler Hernández:

Are You Satisfied?: Giving him one of my ALL TIME favorite songs! Since the death of their father, Tyler has been caring for both his mother and sister and keeping the household afloat effectively. Through this, my dude doesn't seem to know what it means to take a break. He needs one.

Highly Emotional People: Furthermore on that note, I can see Taylor saying these lyrics to her twin brother. Tyler has gotten to used to being the caregiver at such a young age he doesn't seem sure how to be cared FOR. My dude is repressing and lashing out and everything in a very unhealthy way. If anything good comes out of the tree kebab, it's forcing him to accept outside help and let others take on some burdens. We're highly emotional people, and everyone deserves to show that.

Gargoyles the Movie: Heroes Awaken (1994)

Back in 1995, I distinctly remember seeing a VHS of Gargoyles: The Movie at the video rental store. I picked it as my movie of the week and was disappointed when I realized it was only the 5-part series premiere edited together. This means we’re not really talking about a movie here, but we sort of are as well. Let's consider it a made-for-TV movie for this review's sake. As that, how does this fare?

In 994 A.D., Scotland, Castle Wyvern repels any invaders thanks to its stone gargoyles, which come to life at nighttime. Despite his frightening appearance, their leader, Goliath (voiced by Keith David) desires only cooperation between his clan and the humans who defend them while they are petrified during the day. Following a betrayal from within the castle walls, most of the gargoyles are destroyed and the few survivors are frozen in stone until the castle they defend rises above the clouds. A thousand years later, in Manhattan, billionaire David Xanatos (Jonathan Frakes) has moved the castle above his headquarters. Awoken in an unfamiliar world, they find a friend in Elisa Maza (Salli Richardson), an open-minded police detective.

Don’t expect the visuals to rival a theatrical production or even something like Nickelodeon’s The Last Airbender. While the characters are consistently on-model, I spotted at least one coloring error in the second half of the picture and there is more than one instance of the stone gargoyles looking pretty different from their awakened state - the "statues" are painted as static background elements so the stone texture and the angles of their muscles/limbs are much more detailed than anything in the moving foreground. Finally, this is a pilot so while it is self-contained, many threads will only pay off in later seasons, such as the gargoyle eggs Goliath leaves with Princess Katharine (Kath Soucie) and her wizard (Jeff Bennett) (not sure why he did that, in hindsight). That said, this is a strong debut.

There are many characters in this story and the gargoyles other than Goliath - they name themselves Lexington (Thom Adcox Hernandez), Hudson (Ed Asner), Brooklyn (Jeff Bennett again), Broadway (Bill Fagerbakke), and Bronx (Frank Welker) - are more established than given character arcs. This makes Goliath the protagonist and the others supporting characters. I’ve found that in most children’s television series, the leader turns out to be the least interesting member of a team but that’s not the case here. Goliath is at once trusting of humans and wary of opening up. He can be calm and collected but is also prone to fits of rage and frequently talks of vengeance against those who’ve wronged him. He adapts well to his new setting but shows no affinity for modern-day tech like some of his comrades. He's many things at once, which keeps you watching and wondering what's next. There are no obvious character arcs within him.

Gargoyles rather elegantly uses the limitations imposed upon it as a boy’s property to its advantage. All of the gargoyles in Manhattan are male, guaranteeing there won’t be any weird “should we start repopulating?” discussions. It also adds an extra level of tragedy to the story by making them the last of their kind. Conveniently, this makes Elisa the lone female hero of the show/film without making her a token. If there’s a secondary protagonist, it’s her (which gives you a bit of a Beauty and the Beast vibe) and unlike other shows, her status as a colored woman does not make her feel like a quota. It should also be noted that Xanatos is a person of color as well, making this a show with more POC than Caucasians. It may be because most of the cast are non-humans but that’s still something I feel is worth noting.

The story features plenty of varied action. There are battles set in 994 and others in the present as well - some of which don’t include the gargoyles at all and allow the human characters to shine. There are twists and turns as allies become enemies and new partnerships are formed. The general tone is tragic and adventurous with a few bits of comedy thrown in here and there. Best of all, this is a wholly original property. The show was conceived as an answer to Batman: The Animated Series but rather than dig up some available superhero property (this was years before Disney acquired Marvel), it's is something new.

My favorite scene of the film is an interaction between Goliath and his mate, Demona (Marina Sirtis), who managed to survive the thousand-year slumber. During a mission for Xanatos, she prepares to throw an unconscious guard out of an airlock to his death but is stopped by Goliath. “The centuries have made you weak, Goliath,” she says. The thing is, very little time has actually passed for the winged warrior. He’s been frozen in stone. He HASN’T changed but that one sentence shows how much she HAS. It’s a nice subtle exchange.

I am coming into this review biased. Though I haven’t seen the show in years, I remember it well and certainly, remember how it made me feel in 1994. It played right into my fascination with mythology & monsters and I attribute my affection for Shakespeare (the series draws inspiration from Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, among others) to the show. It had a lasting impression on me and I believe it has the power to enchant young audiences once more. (July 28, 2022)

Year 1680 - Part 2

TW/CW: Death Mention, Child Death

While Giuliano reeled from the devastation that was losing his wife and three more of their children, life still went on.

Orelia found the time to seduce locals, mostly wealthy individuals who's idea of adventure was sharing a bed with a sailor.

The Bailey family was grew as the youngest was old enough to start walking around behind her brother but when Giovanni Cesare wasn't working he more concerned with his own daughter than his wife's half-siblings.

Elisabetta grew into a sweet child to her parent's delight and maybe it was because she was less fragile as she grew and less likely to pass but Vivienne began to make an effort to bond with their daughter now that she was a few months old.

Back in Tartosa, Katharine was delighted that her dear sister became a teenager in October especially as she was finally expecting again after years of trying but that didn't last as her son passed away in November and her Aunt Gabriella in December.

Giuliano spent a few minutes each day speaking to his late wife in hopes that she would feel his enduring love for her beyond the grave.

Marina spent more and more time at the Morosini home because of their shared loss and the fact that she could tell that her father's widow was just waiting for the appropriate time to remarry and it was uncomfortable being in a home where the adult was clearly just biding their time though admittedly, Alessandra did her best to care for not only her late husband's children but his young orphaned sister as well despite it all.

As the losses softened with time, Giuliano did go out of his way to give all his love to Ricciardi as his only surviving child. They had both lost a lot that year and doting on the boy made it easier to move on and the relief they felt when the rains finally came to wash away the illness of stagnation made things feel hopeful once more.

Ashley's spirit returned to the family to watch over her beloved and her last remaining child as she shared news with Giuliano that their other children had already moved on to whatever came next for them which they could only hope was a good thing but the both of them were glad to see each other again after nearly a year apart.

The year ended in the Bailey house as the attempt for a son for Mr.Bailey was confirmed to have resulted in a pregnancy.

OLA SOLIDARIA/ Más de 30 lazos de amor 

Más de 30 lazos de amor, es un proyecto que toma a la figura del amor como basamento catártico, formulado a partir de procedimientos de trabajo colectivo donde me propongo mirar y pensar la forma de vincularnos, utilizando y sugiriendo que la técnica que acompañe la propuesta sea el bordado.

El suceso que originó este proyecto data de 2015, cuando motivada por una profunda y dolorosa ruptura amorosa, di comienzo a la reconstrucción metafórica de mi propio desamor, encontrando en el bordado la herramienta que “arreglaba” eso que sentía destrozado. Esta búsqueda dio lugar a otras: los vínculos amorosos con el resto de las personas de mi vida y la forma que tenemos de demostrarlo, hicieron de mi corazón un gran tejido. Así es que se expandió y me animé a invitar a otros a trabajar. La propuesta fue sencilla: elegir una tela estampada, por gusto, por su textura, por su cuerpo, por lo que quisieran y comenzar a pensar el vínculo que cada uno tiene con el amor; el propio, el ajeno. El amor en todos sus sentidos, sin límites. La idea fue bordar, cortar, romper, descoser, agujerear, hacer lo que cada uno sintiera.

La propuesta es un ritual donde finalmente me reconstruyo en los trabajos de los demás salvándome, por ahora.

¿Dónde van los fondos recaudados?

Hace unos años conocí a Caro Soriano, mujer, fotógrafa, mamá, luchadora; la conocí haciendo fotos en el taller de Gabi Muzzio. Caro a parte de tantas cosas lindas y de que se le hacen agujeritos en los cachetes cuando se ríe, es la Presidenta de la *Fundación FAME Argentina (Familias con Atrofia Muscular Espinal). La misma se encarga de agrupar familias y pacientes afectados con Atrofia Muscular Espinal, que es una enfermedad genética neuronal, caracterizada por la pérdida de músculo esquelético causada por la progresiva degeneración de las células del asta anterior de la médula espinal.

Ella me mostró lo que significa lidiar con una discapacidad desde lo corporal así como también desde lo social. Me mostró la cantidad de cuerpo que hay que poner en una lucha pero sobe todas las cosas me enseñó que sin el amor, que es lo que la sostiene, no podría continuar. Caro es mi más enorme lazo de amor.

Por eso el fin de este proceso de producción, amorosa y catártica es recaudar fondos para que FAME siga luchando y todas estas personas consigan pronto la aplicación de la Spinraza que es la droga que cambiará sus vidas!

Marina had a lot of people in her life to be thankful for, no matter how much she projected the energy of not liking anyone outside of her sisters, it couldn't be denied now that she had a man whom she was in love with and friends who she loved and cared for as well. Despite that, Marina was still hyper independent at heart, and sometimes she got to a point where she just needed to do something on her own, and tonight had been one of those nights as she ventured out to a queer club downtown as she preferred them over straight clubs for multiple reasons. A few drinks in and she was enjoying herself immensely and it could maybe be said that this club had never seen someone enjoy dancing with themselves all night as much as Marina was.  She had still been approached by several people, most of which wanted to buy her a drink, which Marina let them resulting in her not having paid for any of the alcohol consumed that night. She wasn't a fool though, so when the last woman had bought her a drink, Marina hadn't actually drank it, knowing she was just about at her limit for how drunk she wanted to be. Instead, she noticed Dulcie who was near her and had seemingly just finished dancing with and parted ways from a woman on the dancefloor. Intent on just paying the drink forward to a stranger, Marina called out to her, "Hey...do you want a free drink? I haven't had any of it so I can't say for sure what it is, but I'm guessing it's a long island by the looks of it. You interested?"

PHOTOSHOOT: MARINA FOR THE UNTITLED MAGAZINE

Marina Diamandis graced the cover of The Untitled Magazine's "#GirlPower" issue. This post marks the first of many "Froot" era editorials!

She was photographed and styled by Indira Cesarine, glammed-up by Roberto Morelli and coiffed by Anthony Joseph Hernandez.

The cover look displays the Greek-Welsh chanteuse in a midnight-blue satin dress with chiffon insert and eyelet details which belongs to Roberto Cavalli's Resort 2015 collection. Above you can see similar pieces with the same eyelet decorations!

For the second look, Marina opted to go all elegant in a black jumpsuit with scalloped detailing and semi-sheer chiffon from Charlotte Ronson's Fall/Winter 2014 lookbook.

Love the mix of different seasons used for this shoot!

She finished the look off with a bold black resin & gold metal cuff from Pluma Italia's "Colori" collection.

Of course we can't leave out a Greek designer when it comes to Marina! Inspired by old Hollywood glamour, she wore this Costarellos Fall/Winter 2014 white mermaid gown with strategically placed golden zippers.

A true show-stopper of a creation would be this black & cream silk cocktail dress with side peek-a-boo details and long mesh train from Bibhu Mohapatra's Spring/Summer 2015 runway show.

This look was completed with Erickson Beamon crystal jewelry and these Via Spiga metallic silver court heels.

This stunning look showcases M sporting a ZAC Zac Posen Resort 2015 turquoise stretch jersey mermaid gown with seductive V-neckline and figure-enhancing seams.

She also wears a pair of Via Spiga pumps and a Pluma Italia Gladiator gold cuff (similar pictured).

In the penultimate shot Marina flirts with the camera while wearing one of the finale numbers from Christian Siriano's Spring/Summer 2015 collection – long gown with plunging V-neckline and short sleeves rendered in dark blue glossy silk lamé.

On her hand we can spot a double open ring by New York City-based jewelry label Stanmore (similar pictured).

Last but definitely not least, Marina looks ethereal in a Georgine Spring/Summer 2015 "Cherchez La Femme" collection metallic gold liquid leather trench coat with matching belted wide-leg trousers and white scoop neck bodysuit.

As in jewelry, she wore a statement necklace in gold by Elizabeth Cole, the aforementioned Stanmore ring and another gold ring by Kenneth Jay Lane.

EA Sports UFC 5 Announces Huge Roster Updates To Coincide With UFC 300 And Future Pay-Per-Views

UFC 300 goes down in Las Vegas, Nevada, on April 13, featuring a card that rivals any pay-per-view in UFC history. While the vast majority of the fighters appearing on UFC 300 are already included in EA Sports UFC 5, developer EA Vancouver is celebrating the milestone UFC event by announcing a big roster update. Not only that, but more fighters will join the roster in both May and June.

This first roster update arrives tomorrow, April 4, and adds several ranked and up-and-coming fighters. The additions, all of which are included free, feature the likes of surging prospects, mainstay contenders, and fan favorites. You can see the full list of free additions coming this week below.
