ON CLASSIC BURLESQUE + SOFT BLACK FEMMES

This is going to be short and sweet because I’ve got to prepare for a busy night! I’ll be performing two classic bump-and-grind acts at Dangerously Delicious Pies tonight with Les Folies Derriere, one of my absolute favorite burlesque production companies here in Washington, D.C., ran by Callie Pigeon. I put a pic of Miss Topsy up there because she is my main classic burlesque inspiration, aesthetically!

I love doing Les Folies Derriere shows because they showcase classic styles of burlesque and vaudeville entertainment -- there’s comedy, a bit of sideshow, bump-n-grind, and generally a very retro, vintage feel. I know classic burlesque gets a bad rap - I’ve even heard people describe it as “boring,” “offensive,” “outdated,” and more. But hear me out here!

As a little black girl in Texas, I was the darkest person in my neighborhood, at my church, and at my school. I was always told I was “pretty to be so dark-skinned,” something many people with my skin complexion grow up hearing. But even though folks apparently thought I was cute, I still noticed that I was treated differently than white and lighter-skinned girls. I never held any animosity towards anyone over this (I’m a pretty unflappable, annoyingly-positive person sometimes), and literally just decided that it would be best to never focus on my looks or skin because this was not one of my “good” qualities. Whatever that means.

So I buried my head in books, and I made friends with other quiet nerds, and I tried my best to blend into the background. But my mom is a crazy Southern pageant mom who refused to let me be a wallflower - she registered me for pageants and runway shows and talent shows and dance classes and showcases. She took me shopping, introduced me to nice fabrics, got my make-up professionally done, took me to the nail shop. She never let me forget that I’m a hardcore mf femme, and she STILL doesn’t. I am incredibly grateful to my mother for this, and she still helps me find my femme even to this day. 

I say all this because even though I was pretty much ignored and tossed aside by mainstream society, I was celebrated in my own house. My mom found a way for my femininity to be celebrated within my community. So while I was quiet and shy outside, I would go home and play in her furs and stilettos. I had an entire Bettie Page and Marilyn Monroe bookshelf, and I would study their poses, their hands and feet, their facial expressions.

As I grew up, it was clear that based on first impressions, the world expected me to be hard. Angry. Full of rage. I remember talking to a random white man and after hearing my voice for the first time, he exclaimed, “Wow, you’re so eloquent with such a soft voice!” As if he expected me to bark like a dog or something? Many people expect or desire black women to be hard and tough, and are genuinely taken aback when we display softness.

I say all this to say that classic burlesque is a way for me, as the darkest woman many of you have ever seen in person, to display my softness and femininity unchallenged. It’s a way for me to be myself in a way that I never saw any black woman showcased in the past - put up there on a twirling pedestal like Bettie Page or Marilyn Monroe. Dripping in expensiveness or sexiness or naughtiness or playfulness, and allowing themselves to just be soft.

That’s what classic burlesque means to me, and it’s incredibly important for me to view myself in that way.

I hope some of y’all get a chance to see me perform my favorite style of burlesque tonight at Dangerously Delicious Pies!

So it dawned on me.. yesterday. At dawn.

That there’s this cliche little conspiracy thing for us in our mid-20’s that 25 is THE worst age, ever.

And while I can attest to 2017 so far being more ambivalent in its extent of BS compared to others (2009, 2012, 2015?!!?!?)….

I have to say that I agree, and I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel with 26.

Suddenly I saw the last ten years weave itself around my mind, counting all of the victories and tragedies and it made way too much sense.

Of course I’m lost right now, as any child byproduct of the dysfunctional American household is going to be. I’m a fucking millennial inheriting nothing but a broken economy and a bullseye painted on my back for everything from financial ruin, emotional self-destruction, and potential kidnapping to a terrorist attack, psychopath killer from my past, and potential Armageddon as we may know it soon.

I think, a lot of other people would feel pretty fucking lost, anxious, and depressed too.

And for the most part, I don’t feel that bad. Maybe it’s my meds zombifying me, maybe it’s just blind optimism because I’ve been too drained of the energy to feel anything stronger than that, or maybe since everything passes- that includes all the negative stuff too.

But I’m fine. I’m on my way to better. I’m almost there. For the first time, I kinda feel it.

26 sounds like a paradise, in fact. And I’m one that HATES getting older. HATES my birthday. I break down. I relapse. I turn into a human tornado of self-destruction. It’s bad, like Marilyn Monroe level of bad.

But not this year. I’m building an empire for myself, just like I have for the past ten years even if I keep breaking it down like the U.S. did to their own towers (oops).

What I did for myself in the midst of all the chaos and ruin was established myself as a writer. I found my words, or they found me, and then they found themselves on paper. Whether it was some mediocre essay project that my teachers inevitably A’d and hailed me for, or my Dragonball Z fanfiction that I still fuck with but with a lot of intermittent adult absences due to my grown up writer’s block from all the imagination that’s left me in my dry and cynical 20’s.

I also got published in both UNLV and my high school’s newspapers. Luckily these are the first things to come up with a google of my full name, and not any mug shots or crazy things like that because those things can stay in the MF past okay.

This is all while my parents divorced, my mom dated and remarried, and I got exiled to my dad’s place all the way across town to another high school- effectively killing the dead end that way my destructive social life at the other school, which was somewhat of a great thing and a terrible thing. I didn’t have people fueling my already turbulent home life with more drugs and alcohol, but then I didn’t have anybody at all either unless they existed in the chat room I dominated as a teenager.

Ahhhh, yes. I will always be proud of such a minuscule feat, with my social anxiety establishing itself and all, because I came up with the MOST LIT AF nicknames. Nikkachu, VenerealCereal, and my very first, Lovily_Lili17- my daughter’s name that I discovered at 13.

Oh yeah. That too. READING. I couldn’t stop. I was addicted to those huge adult novellas like Lace, Where the Heart Is, and anything Stephen King once I had my way with R.L. Stine and his many endeavors to placate his teen base.

Wow. The nostalgia. I can’t.

I still have almost every book from that era. I went and bought a ton of them off of Amazon, but I’ll have to replace some that arrived less than the library form that I originally read them in. I can’t do paperback, they’re much too small.

But that library smell.. My favourite is the one by my mother’s house, where I looked down at my Converse at 12 years old and realized that I was becoming a woman already.

HAHA. Seriously. 12. A woman. Okay.

That moment was just me feeling myself because I had a lot of older male fans that I’m quite sure held a rap sheet for child-related sex crimes, okay.

In that moment, I felt sheer power. My dying self-esteem that had wilted from years of verbal abuse and a total lack of male attention minus that of bullying was suddenly blossoming from the attention I would get from old men. It was exhilarating, and just as addictive as anything else I decided to get my all too curious hands on for the next decade.

At the end of this decade though, I can say I’m no longer phased by it. I get all kinds of attention now, and it’s more of a burden than it sounds like I’m making it. It comes from guys with whole entire relationships waiting for them at home and at work, guys who have kids already (ew), or guys I’m just not into. Period.

So I have a drought of a love life, but I knew this was coming once I recycled my ex’s as much as I could without anyone getting killed. It came close… LOL, but we’re all okay and we’re all separated thank God.

Everybody went their own way to something better, hopefully. Moreso hopefully for me once this drought is over and I can stop losing sleep with all of the PTSD I’ve mustered through the years with all the nightmarish shit I’ve put myself through.

I really went through the ringer, especially my early 20’s. Before I could even legally drink, I had charges. But that’s the territory, right? Being a human Tasmanian devil will do that to you. Having the most unstable self-image will put out a red flag to society that you are disposable, trouble, a force to be reckoned with, etc. So I don’t recommend it.

I’ve really calmed down though. Especially in the past few weeks. Normally after an event like the one I just suffered, I’d be halfway back to my early grave again just like countless times before. But I’m actually way more okay sooner than I thought. It only took a good 3 or 4-day binge of unhealthy, toxic, and intoxicating substances for me to snap into a depression and then somehow snap out of it completely averse to that stuff.

That’s how you know you’re adulting, when life knocks you over for the thousandth time and you just… lay there.

And I type all of this with a huge grin on my face, because it’s great. I can enjoy being sober and feeling like shit at the same time. I can enjoy going to the store at almost 11 o’clock at night for bagel bites and taquitos and feel accomplished for leaving my apartment for all of twenty minutes. I can enjoy binging YouTube, laughing at memes, and obsessing over current event stories in my favourite forum message board places.

So, I’ve moved into my phone. Big deal. My dopamine receptors have to be stimulated by something other than the sun blinding me through my window.

I will say I am neglecting the Tindr app for my own sanity. I think last time I tried to venture it, I got a really fussy man-baby throwing a fit over my very delayed and very mundane response. Okay. That was that, then.

I have a feeling that I can’t rely on electronics for this one. It’s going to have to be some sort of divine intervention to get my love life back on track. I really won’t settle for less, either, because we don’t have the technology advanced enough yet to weed out the assholes, the fuckboys, and the lazy have-nots that I simply can’t build anything with.

There’s always med school. Some very savvy ladies attend just so they can enter the meat market of medicine and date an up and coming doctor. I know I would. Medical terms during foreplay? Needles and a papoose during roleplay? Hell yes.

Okay maybe not anything with phlebotomy but you catch my drift. I think overall, even if they don’t share all the same quirky interests of mine, I would just want someone who is in love with me and stays in love with me. Even if I can’t stay in love with myself.

But I’m trying. This is me trying. This is me giving myself a fucking break because the last ten years have kinda sucked, right? On and off. Sure. But it doesn’t matter. All of the friendships, the relationships, the scandals, the stories.. My God, do I have a story.

I want to publish it, but not in its raw form of pure sugar and salt just piled up in the middle of the table. I want it to be in the form of fiction, set in outer space, in the dark corners of an emotionally dysregulated teenage girl’s mind…

Yep. I got the ideas spinning in my head and everything, it just won’t form a tangible shape.

And it won’t make any money because I’m fucking insane and no one will get it: the big picture, the metaphor, what actually went down.

So I have to make it make money and make sense. Two very difficult things in a day and age where something as basic as Fifty Shades of Grey is hailed as top-notch. Wtf.

At least Twilight is over, thankfully.

And finally my last contribution to this planet and this life of mine in the past ten years is…

BUTTONS.

Yes, my cat. Why?

Because I adopted the most beautiful, loving, playful, and stubborn salt-loving creature on this planet.

So even if I died right here, today, this second.. I will have known true, unconditional love just because of him.

And even if it’s single chick cliche AF… I adore him to death.

So there’s that.

Looking forward to the next 6 months coming and going by so I can be a whole year older, and a whole lot wiser with a lot more laidback to me than before.

But so far, enjoying the ride at 25… (and a half).

In Hollywood, everything was almost all right until the 1950's. Then, the story about the diva Marilyn MONROE and the President John Fitzgerald KENNEDY was a first problem that was not reducing during the next decades: a love affair between the 2 capitals, HOLLYWOOD, the main worldwide city of the movie industry and WASHINGTON, the most important center of power in the United States.

Russia has been invited to share their romance, Moscow is a so attractive for its ideology and fascinating with it its red flag of the Soviet Union of the communism from its founder Karl MARX. Our founder is not at all the same kind of guy, not a theories maker but a musician: Frederic VIDAL. He is from another time like MARX for RUSSIA but I am his successor like Vladimir PUTIN is the successor of the USSR.

We are together a bunch of people worldwide around the group coming from the Punk, BrAmStOcKeR, to demonstrate we are accepting anymore the glamorous relation between the White House and the HOLLYWOOD Sign. It has been worse during the Presidency of President Barack OBAMA, already a fragile friendship mixed with a dispute for the George W BUSH Presidency, the 2 Presidents and residents of the Oval Office promoting a collaboration with the red carpets and their stars that has been excessive.

There is no new Marilyn MONROE but the brand new President of the United States is unexpected. He did a career of several years on the East Coast, in Los Angeles for his Reality Show, The APPRENTICE, 10 years ago when our leader was with his Jewish Legal Name could not have a career. Donald TRUMP told us on Twitter, a few days ago, we are in a Nazi Germany, we are sure he was wrong but there must be a style of selection of the people that is shared with this devastated regime of the past. Why America would not be itself like before to let HOLLYWOOD without a direction obviously political in a WASHINGTON that we must write in quotes.

This report about a RUSSIANGATE is a warning to inform the Supreme Judge that there is an alert about the politicians in the world of the big screen. This is wrong and imitate the second regime that collapsed, the Soviet Russia were everything was socialized, collectivized. So, the State was the manager and investor of the entertainment like it did for every industry in the Country. The television is a way to communicate that is very expensive and for the Presidential election, the candidates were too much like actors, following TRUMP and CLINTON who must have their acting coaches!

So, we must study in this report why Frederic VIDAL is a name that is not welcomed, only for a personal and professional Apartheid, not acceptable in our society thanks to the Constitution amendment called the Bill of Rights. In Russia, there was this problem of Dissidents, in quotes too. People who refused the Communism were not invited to have a regular life but they were controlled, blacklisted, not authorized in the press. If the US become like USSR, it is a shame. President Vladimir PUTIN does not want that to happen. He is the leader of a new regime, not communist anymore, that would like to help us but he was too much called by Donald TRUMP during the Presidential campaign to win the election. In HOLLYWOOD also, they do a confusion between him and Josef STALIN. He's not a tsar or a star, he's a wise responsible man like I am and we hope together this RUSSIANGATE will pen the eyes of the readers about the danger to be confused.

This is the second step with the revenge of HOLLYWOOD that is automatically, there will be moviemakers elected to the US Congress in the future after the selection of anther President if TRUMP does not read our letters.

- About TRUMP, NIXON, REAGAN and BUSH -

Donald TRUMP is not the name of a famous politician but he used to be closed to some of them all his life. Nobody was thinking he could replace them one day at the highest level of the US Institutions. The White House is not there to welcome an investor from Wall Street normally, this is a premiere with a red carpet: the Republican Primaries. During the Presidential campaign itself, a majority of the TV watchers understood that the 2 candidates had the same talent to speak and move in front of the camera. Maybe the Lady would have been a more gifted President but she was not able to compete with a guy who had the opportunity to tell us that Vladimir PUTIN  has been in his network for a while and he's hesitating about informing him about what is wrong with the election, at that time.

I am a Republican of a new style to some extend. I introduced the concept of a GOP2 like MTV2 for the people who would like to join the Grand Old Party, keeping their conviction SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL, CULTURE CAN BE ALTERNATE, to be conservative and liberal is compatible. Donald TRUMP himself does not look like a regular leader of the Republican party at all. He's different and was proud as a young man to receive the recommendation of President Richard NIXON. He met also Ronald REAGAN obviously because he was already a Rain Maker and a men and women manager fascinated also by HOLLYWOOD, REAGAN representing the great tradition of the most corporate HOLLYWOOD of the Screen Actors Guild.

It must have been at time that TRUMP decided to focus on the EAST, for his family (his daughter's name IVANKA indicates his Russian interest, personally and culturally) but also HIS CAREER. Four decades are involved in his partnership, partly confidential, with the ex-USSR. The sons and daughters of President EISENHOWER who was not in the mood to accept an invitation to visit MOSCOW in the 1950's (like we can understand!) were not like him staying far away from the Soviets (a regime not acceptable about the ideology, communism and its competition against the United States).

So, TRUMP followed a trend. Ronald was having some Russians contacts before Donald did a lot more than being in touch, he became almost a cousin of them. PUTIN appeared to be appreciated by every President of the United States , since CLINTON. Today, he is sad to be a tyrant and a criminal in the American Medias. President TRUMP shows his support to his Russian equivalent. We will study again with others details of the relations between the 2 men.

We are not fools and stupid to be anti-Russian. 

Donald TRUMP did not accept in a Tweet before to be President people who are anti-Russians, writing they are fools and stupid. To be against somebody else or against another Country is, on the contrary, necessary and useful. It is the competition. It must be controlled by the police but if it is not too aggressive, IT IS WELCOMED IN AMERICA TO BE ANTI. The anti-TRUMPs are famous to express their minimum of Hate against somebody who is not accepting enough the Opposition. To be anti-Russian, why not? They were our enemies when they were communists threatening us with their nuclear weapons during the Cold War and until now. Our objective is NO MORE NUKE but Moscow, the Russian capital will not help us to refuse forever this kind of war of mass destruction. The same for terrorism that we hope to see over one day. There is rivalry between the US and Russia or a deal from World War II that staid secret until now. Maybe, the American Authorities were looking for a friend of the Soviets to be their new President and now they appreciate their success, planned by ROOSEVELT and STALIN. But the population of the cities of the 50 States does not agree with this agreement and is organizing the right pressure to stop our "Russification".

Vladimir PUTIN, the Russian President, would be behind the Russian hackers who succeeded to neutralize partly the computers of the Democrats party in order to prevent the election of Hilary CLINTON. PUTIN expressed many times in 2016 his support to the newcomer TRUMP who has, surprisingly for a New Yorker, a Russian style we did not know.

Donald TRUMP, the surprising Presidential candidate of the Republican Party, acknowledged during the campaign he needed the support of the Russian President. He explained PUTIN is good for America and can be the right person to invite in the campaign.

He does not feel comfortable, obviously, as a politician. He needed this help. He is a business man who is billionaire and there is a boycott of his election and Presidency by an important minority of Americans because of his anti-Bill of Rights attitude of segregation and rejection of critics.

Donald TRUMP wants Russia to become our main partner. The Secretary of State of the new President, Rex, previously EXXON CEO, is close to PUTIN. This is is not really compatible with our independence and our strategy of competition against the Moscow project to be the equivalent of the USSR. 

2. The impeachment of the elected-President is starting January 20.

We are not the Nazi Germany but the winner of World War II.

It is TRUMP who insulted the United States just before his Inauguration writing in a tweet that the US are the NAZI GERMANY. What did he mean? Nobody prosecuted him for this affirmation. Maybe there is a part of truth that must be investigated. Hundreds of Nazis, including the famous engineer of the SATURN V rocket, were accepted on the American territory at the end of World War II. The winner of war sometimes use the defeated institutions or ideology to continue its fight when there is an allied that has a stronger ideology than itself. It was the case at that time: USSR, RUSSIA federated to other States all around his territory, was Communist and preparing to extend its power worldwide. Consequently, it is possible there has been a secret user of Nazism by the White House until now. TRUMP, closer to the Jews, mass murdered by the IIIrd Reich of the Nazis, decided from the beginning of his career to contact USSR. Not comfortable with the communist ideology because he's capitalist from Wall Street, he celebrated the end of the Soviet Union (USSR) in 1991 and started his Love Story with Vladimir PUTIN all at once, the Russian President after Boris ELTSIN wanting to be a modern regime, inspired by the American democracy.

Donald TRUMP is a controversial elected-president. He is eccentric but against the subculture. He is the American principal icon of the underground but inversed, to be shown as the superstar "clown of the Establishment". His impact in the Mass Medias is a cultural reality that is not true. It must financed by the "Empire" of Donald TRUMP like advertising. This strategy is not usual (to be criticized and to use it like a promotion). It could be also managed from Moscow.

His recurrent Russian connection is the result of a blackmail and is financial and not only for the Presidential election, according to a report of the Intelligence.

The Congress, the FBI and the CIA are investigating about this ingerence (political interference by a foreign Country).

Generally, Donald TRUMP is proposing a policy that is not even totally supported by the members of his Cabinet.

His project of a real wall between the US and Mexico is emblematic of his extreme style of government.

His dispute with the press is growing and shows his Presidency will be probably destabilizing our Institutions. He refused a question of CNN during his latest press conference and criticized this TV channel like he criticized the magazine VANITY FAIR. TRUMP has the project to refuse the White House access to the press, relocating the press center somewhere else in DC.

The Congress can decide the impeachment of TRUMP in the next few weeks. There is also the 25th amendment that can be used to oblige him to leave the White House. 

3. The cancellation of the Presidential election will follow.

The RUSSIANGATE is also about Human Trafficking in HOLLYWOOD.  I criticize Hollywood since 2009 when I found the picture on Google search of Blake LIVELY with Penn BRADLEY kissing each other in the sea of a far away island. I understood all at once it was organized against me who had the project to contact this actress, lead of the TV show GOSSIP GIRL. Unfortunately, she was the victim of the Human Trafficking made in Hollywood that is the result of decades of continuation of the political and cultural connection of the actors community with the Russia since Josef STALIN until Vladimir PUTIN. I decided to write a first article on my blog to propose a reform of the movie industry that could accept a second program of control like the investigation by the commission of Josef McCarthy in the 1950's. Human Trafficking is terrible for the actors who have a management that is harassing them. My slogan was "Blake LIVELY, we want her free" but it never happened until now. Ronald REAGAN, President of the Screen Actors Guild at the end of the decade must have been also a friend of the USSR. As Republican President of the United States, he was probably a supporter of the Soviet Union secretly, it would explain why Donald TRUMP was not more investigated until now during his transition team and now at the Presidency. The Oval Office is already too East oriented historically. After my Web article, I was refused by the management of Blake LIVELY definitely, I diffused some tweets and other information saying she would be perfect to play in my movie FRENCH COP but it changed nothing. She was married with Ryan REYNOLDS, her partner for the film GREEN LANTERN and she is now the mother of 2 children. This must have been a fake wedding that will be cancel one day because it was organized to prevent me to be in touch with Blake.

It will be necessary to cancel the Presidential election sooner or later. Hillary CLINTON would have been elected President if there was not this system of Electoral College. We need an amendment to reform the Constitution. She had a lot more votes than Donald TRUMP (more than 2 millions). 

In HOLLYWOOD, there is this problem of the actors who are treated like slaves regarding their career under control. It is like Human Trafficking and it reduces their fame and their role to be cultural leaders to moderate WASINGTON for more democracy and modernization of our society. With President OBAMA, the movie industry was managed by the White House a lot and unable to produce new masterpieces.

The immorality of Donald TRUMP was a quality for the previous President. He is known to have harassed a veteran Porn Star in her 30′s or 40′s. He is known to reply in the 2000′s to NBC journalist BUSH basically that women are like sexual animals. He would not have been the winner of the Republican primary if the present GOP was not accepting this style of mood and mind. Possibly, the Republican party and the other candidates were corrupted by this billionaire of New York who had 2 times a problem of bankruptcy. 

Russia was famous in the 1950′s to be popular in HOLLYWOOD thanks to Joseph STALIN who inspired respect and interest for the communism, his doctrine to refuse capitalism in a second time. In WASHINGTON, it was necessary to organize a commission of the Congress leaded by the US Senator McCarthy who prosecuted several actors about their engagement with a foreign power. 

Now, HOLLYWOOD is against TRUMP but maybe not so much against PUTIN. The anti-TRUMP movement is not so much motivated to organize negotiations. Maybe TRUMP like adversaries like them to use this dispute to be more severe. 

The pro-Russia Donald TRUMP is unable to calm down the situation as he does not want to improve the profession of the actors. As the star of the 2000′s reality show THE APPRENTICE, he got more fame and co-produce now the NEW APPRENTICE with Arnold SCHWARZENEGGER as the Host. The new President is also known for his daily tweets thanks to TWITTER that said his account would be cancelled because insulting the readers. 

Obviously, he is the bad choice. Too many reasons explain it and Hillary CLINTON must have a second chance to be elected President, if she wants it, otherwise other candidates. Donald is dysfunctional and creating a fear about the future of the Presidency that the population does not want a dictatorship or a permanent dispute location. 

4. The candidacy of Mike FULLER means he’s the SHADOW PRESIDENT.

No Blacklisting against the author of FRENCH COP and GERMAN SPY. 

In 2007, before the segregation against me by the entourage of the actress Blake LIVELY, I started my career as a screenwriter-actor with a first incident that was terrible for me. I was registered as a Write-In Presidential candidate by the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) but I never attracted a journalist in California or in another State of the Union. I am a screenwriter in HOLLYWOOD and I must have been the victim of a blackout, that is not legal, until now. 

My film projects since 2006 were written by Frederic VIDAL and developed by me. The GERMAN SPY IV is the first 2017 synopsis after a lot of others. Each time, it has been impossible to organize a team in HOLLYWOOD, certainly because the political chaos there.

For my Shadow Presidency, I will be in charge of this structure to be the center of a NEW PROPOSITION: After TRUMP, FULLER to change and reinforce our Civilization with Conservatism and Liberalism. 

I have for the Russians the initiative of NO NUKES agreement: let us finish this Cold War definitely. No more nuclear missiles to be built and let us disconnect all the Nukes that are operational in the United States, even if they don’t do the same. We will be more powerful than them because PEACE IS THE BEST WEAPON. First, Donald TRUMP who said there will be a lot more nuclear arms must resign because he is Kremlin dependent (PUTIN said the same in December, the same day).

Why artist Viveek Sharma chose Mumbai and Vidya Balan as his muses

For art connoisseurs in India, Viveek Sharma is a familiar name. In a career spanning little over two decades, the artist had made quite an impact in the art arena, with his work which is modern and relatable. Sharma has a degree in art from the prestigious J.J. School of Arts and has hosted art exhibition around the world -from Switzerland, Germany, France, to India and, most recently in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Sharma has also dabbled in acting and has featured in films like No Smoking, Asoka and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.

For his work, he draws inspiration from daily life. Born and raised in Mumbai, the artist has taken inspiration from the city for many of his works. Sharma has also done an unique series called Reflections on actress Vidya Balan which the actress herself inaugurated.

Viveek spoke to WION about having Balan as his muse, art in present society and the importance of Indian artists globally. Here are the excerpts.

Q: Where do you see Indian art on the world map? Has it gained more prominence over the years?

A: Have you ever seen the huge piece of art, 'Cloud Gate' at Chicago Art Institute? It's popularity as a 'Bean' by Anish Kapoor a world-renowned name of fame, is that of an Indian. Indian Artist's might be slow in achieving that status, but surely many would make it up in the world scenario. There are quite a few names from the contemporary art scene who are making waves in the west. To do justice to all known and unknown to me, I shall prudently refrain from quoting their names. The fact that we are able to host a Biennial of International stature is evident that India is promising. 

Q: What inspired you to work on your new compilation 'Silence, Please'?

A: I am not only a part of, but I live and breathe this overwhelming landscape of Mumbai. It has always been a source of inspiration right from my early years. It all began subconsciously I believe. I used to reside in Chembur earlier, just off the Eastern Express highway. At first, things were smooth, I was oblivious to the background but then as time went by the constant noise became more and more apparent. It would disturb my every moment. I finally looked for and found a new apartment, one morning I woke to realise that I had chosen a location that overlooks a church, surrounded by greenery and away from the main road that mornings and evenings are a relief from the chaos of daily routines.

In fact, my east facing window was the main inspiration for the light source that is a signature in all my work.

Q: You had Vidya Balan as one of your subjects once. Tell us more about that series? What was her reaction to your work?

A: Vidya Balan was the subject of my body of work titled Reflections in 2012. It was my tribute to Andy Warhol and the iconic Marilyn Monroe who was his muse. I substituted the original subject with Vidya, bringing in a culturally relevant subject. The technique of screen-printing was replaced by handmade multiplication using oils on canvas. The concept follows from substitution on the iconic actress, the contrasting time and place and the medium or technique used.

It all started in 2012 when I went to see her iconic film, The Dirty Picture. Watching her on screen and carrying herself in a sari that way, was so impressive. Vidya is a brilliant actress and really got into the skin of the character she portrayed - Silk Smitha and her life. I also felt that there were so many similarities between Marilyn and Smitha. Both of them enjoyed success so early in their careers. However, as the years went by, they didn't get the roles they wanted and both died very young in their mid-30s.

I did nine paintings of Vidya, in the same posture -- the one that became famous overnight from the film, but in different colours like red, green, brown, black and blue. When I finished the work, I showed it to the renowned columnist, author and art collector, Shobhaa De. So impressed was Shobhaa with the work that she asked me if I wanted Vidya to open the show! And that's how Vidya inaugurated my Exhibition.

Vidya is such a wonderful, humble and down to earth person. She was very appreciative of my work and was quite touched and seemed impressed with how I had captured her on canvas. The paintings have found buyers not just in India, but across the world!

Q: What is that one quality that every artist should possess?

A: Based on my own experience over the last couple of decades, I share a simple piece of advice with all my young artists pursuing their dream in the art world -- never compromise on time dedicated to a piece of work - it reflects in the details.

Q: A lot of artwork is often scrutinized and criticised by society. Artists like MF Hussain have in the past received criticism for their work. You feel our society is still not open to out of box ideas? 

A: Nothing in nature changes, clouds, mountains, sunset, sunrise and so on. But, with the advancement in science and technology a lot has been transformed. We still live in world that is embroiled in controversies. Contradictions arising between traditional values and modernity is the strongest. “Nothing is more dangerous than a representational fallacy," says Herbert Read in his book on Philosophy of Modern Art. This is where the master painter had faced the controversial statements made as perceived by strong religious fundamentals. This has happened earlier when Artist's were victimized during Russian Revolution, French Revolution or even during German holocaust period where Artist's by force fled to other parts of the world and took asylum in countries where they felt safe.
