10 people I’d like to know better
Yayyy! This is fun! Thank you @tea-kettle-tea-kettle AND @faery-berry-blast for including me! Loved y’all’s stuff :3
Last song: NUEVAYoL by Bad Bunny! This song is definitely outside of my regular comfort zone but it is a BANGER.
Favorite color: I’m in favorite color limbo right now!! I love wearing red but I think pink might be the next big contender.
Last book: Recently finished Qualityland by Marc-Uwe Kling. For a crushing Amazon-based dystopia, this was surprisingly so playful and fun. And I’m currently reading Joan of Arc by Mark Twain. What a Girlboss.
Last movie: Finally. FINALLY. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. Oh god. I get it now.
Last TV show: I thiinnnk… Elena of Avalor? With my younger siblings? But let’s be real, the choice of show was solely for my benefit ;)
Spicy/sweet/savory: Sweet AND Spicy. I miss my habanero pineapple jam so much.
Last online search: “how does dry cleaning work” Girlies. I was shocked to find. It’s wet
Current obsession: subtly back on my us states bullshit
Looking forward to: I’ve got some very exciting classes this semester with some cool professors :D
Tagging @foreststarflaime @fridgefanatic @hibiscuslynx @the-phoenix-heart @wanderingnightingale @halcyonlauren @mur-art @s-e-v-e-n-24 @dailymothanon @hamletthedane
It’s fun to see what yall are up to! But no pressure

A List of Stop-Motion Feature-Length Films You Probably Haven't Tried.
If you’re anything like me, stop-motion animation is something that you’re sick of hearing about, because it’s always the same fucking recommendations. I took the time to browse over Wikipedia’s “List of stop-motion films” and do what I could to create a list of stop-motion feature-length films that might be worth a watch and that you haven’t constantly heard animation brats cream themselves over. Obviously, this list is not perfect, it’s mostly based off of the films I was able to find generally high reviews for on Letterboxd, but this list will contain nothing from Aardman, nothing from Laika, nothing from Wes Anderson, Tim Burton, or Henry Selick, but will contain at least a handful of things you haven't heard constant chatter about. These films are also fully stop-motion, so nothing from Ray Harryhausen or Jan Švankmajer either. Oh, and no shorts or television, obviously.
I will go ahead and put the following eight as films that aren't as frequently referenced in "best stop-motion films of all time" articles, but will find their ways into conversations about stop-motion without much difficulty;
René Laloux's "Fantastic Planet" (1973)
Will Vinton's "The Adventures of Mark Twain" (1985)
Adam Elliot's "Mary and Max" (2009)
Charlie Kaufman & Duke Johnson "Anomalisa" (2015)
Claude Barras's "My Life as a Zucchini" (2016) [French]
Phil Tippett's "Mad God" (2021)
Dean Fleischer Camp's "Marcel the Shell with Shoes On" (2021)
Guillermo del Toro's "Pinocchio" (2022)
If you haven't seen those eight, I'd take care of that first. Now, we hit other stuff.
Lotte Reiniger's "The Adventures of Prince Achmed" (1926) [German]
Wladyslaw Starewicz & Irene Starewicz "The Tale of the Fox" (1937) [French]
Ivo Caprino's "The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix" (1975) [Norwegian]
Piotr Kamler's "Chronopolis" (1982) [French]
Chris Taylor & Mark Hall's "The Wind in the Willows" (1983)
Dave Borthwick's "The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb" (1993)
Stanislav M. Sokolov & Derek W. Hayes's "The Miracle Maker" (2000)
Christiane Cegavske's "Blood Tea and Red String" (2006)
Jan Balej's "One Night in One City" (2007) [Czech]
Stéphane Aubier & Vincent Patar's "A Town Called Panic" (2009) [French]
Fernando Cortizo's "The Apostle" (2012) [Spanish]
Chris Sullivan's "Consuming Spirits" (2012)
Paul Cowan & Amer Shomali "The Wanted 18" (2014)
Jan Balej's "Little from the Fish Shop" (2015) [Czech]
Takahide Hori's "Junk Head" (2017) [Japanese]
Michael Mort's "Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires" (2018)
Cristóbal León & Joaquín Cociña's "The Wolf House" (2018) [Spanish]
Paloma Baeza Niki, Lindroth von Bahr, Emma De Swaef, & Marc James Roels's "The House" (2022)
That's what I've got for the time being. If you can recommend a feature-length, majority stop-motion film that's not Aardman, Laika, Wes, Burton, or Selick, I'd be more than happy to look it over and see about adding it to the list. Enjoy.

The recent pride night BS has really been bumming me out. I keep thinking back to the part of TOTI when Mike was worried about Liam coming out to the team and Liam laughs at him and mentioned how young he was when Dan and Marc came out. When you wrote that, or when you wrote YCMAL, did you think the league would be that tolerant by now? Could you have imagined then, that in 2023, there would still be zero openly gay active or retired players, teams would cancel or backtrack their pride nights, players would be openly bigoted under the guise of religion, pride night Instagram comments would be filled with openly homophonic rhetoric, etc?
The world you’ve created feels so lovingly accepting and I guess I’m curious if you thought by now life would have imitated art or if you knew it wouldn’t and this was always a fantasy.
Me too, anon. Me too.
Liam laughing it off was definitely meant to be reflective of his optimistic attitude as someone who grew up in a world with out players, and positive LGBT media representation, and other privileges he can't do anything but take for granted, because they're just...reality, as he experiences it. Mike, obviously, doesn't agree with Liam's flippancy, and doesn't have the same sunny view of things, and that's as much reflection of him growing up in a different time as it is his personality.
YCMAL 'verse definitely is a little...not utopian, I won't say that, and I'm leery of that descriptor for anything, but it is a world that's a little more...live and let live, I suppose, and the institutions are a little less rotten. That individual people can be shitty and selfish and cruel, but that, in collectively, empathy and logic and even simple 'this doesn't personally affect me in any way so I'm just going to mind my own dang business' prevails.
I know that's not how the world works. I've always known that, though boy have the last few years really driven that point down my throat, and underlined just how selfish and shitty and cruel people can be, collectively as well as individually.
The 'verse has never been meant as a complete reflection of reality, though I do intend for the characters to feel realistic (and hope I succeed). The little changes (different teams, different commissioner, different media personalities, different legacy players) have always been a signal of bigger deviations from the world we live in (okay, the no Trump as president was a LITTLE utopian of me).
I will say that when I started writing the YCMAL 'verse (the early 2010s) the world was trending in a slowly more accepting direction, and that it was, in some way, extrapolating based on that forward movement, what something COULD look like. Perhaps optimistically, but even so.
Unfortunately I think the pendulum has started to swing in the other direction; I'd like to think this is the last gasp of bigots being (rightfully) terrified that the world is leaving them behind and they're being consigned to the wrong side of the present as well as the wrong side of history, but unfortunately I've studied enough of history to recognise patterns when I see them, and this economic inequality round has landed firmly in the 'right wing populism' side of things in North America and Europe. In the words of Mark Twain, Sayer of Many Pithy Things, History never repeats itself, but it does often rhyme.
Maybe hanging out in my little sandbox, making castles is escapism. I am, as you say, writing a fantasy world -- I love the sport of hockey but the institutions that prop it up, from youth hockey up to the NHL and national team programs, have been revealed to be horrific and often criminal. It's toxic masculinity, misogyny, homophobia, racism, sexual assault, and trauma all the way down. I think we collectively face all of that enough every day, and I'm going to keep making my little love stories set in a world that isn't perfect by any means, but is a little kinder, a little less brutal than our own. It's my small contribution to the whole 'not actively making the world worse, I hope'.
Also: James Reimer can go fuck himself. Really would love it if literally any member of the media asked him how he, as a Mennonite, squares wearing Military Appreciation jerseys with the pacifism that is a core tenet of his supposed faith, but I know they won't, so, you know. At some point you just have to laugh. This absolutely merciless Beaverton article is a good way to do it.

Working With Disney!
Tumblr media
MARC DAVIS
Before Marc worked for Disney in 1935, he attended many art schools, those schools being the Kansas Art Institute, the California School of Fine Arts, and the Otis Art Institute.
Marc worked as a story sketch artist, character designer, and animator for multiple classic Disney films such as Snow White, Bambi, and Victory Through Air Power (A lesser known propaganda film by Disney). During his 43 year long career, Marc created many famous characters, such as Tinker bell from Peter Pan, Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, and Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmations. There were other animations he worked on, such as Song of the South (A movie made with a mix of live action and animation), The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (A short anthology film), Cinderella, and finally, Alice in wonderland. An extra thing to note is that he also worked on Toot, Whistle, Plunk, and Boom (A 10 minute animated reel)
I picked them because I pretty much chose at random, nothing more to that. sorry :C
While reading the interviews, I took notes, to which i'll list them down here.
In animation, due to how big studios are, typically there's many different styles that end up in the film, for example the contrast between Cinderella and her evil sisters. Cinderella falls within a more realistic style, while her evil sisters seem to be caricatures. This conflict of personalities seemed to happen quite often, as Marc went on to talk about his feelings on the background of Sleeping Beauty.
In the interview, Marc mentioned that Walt didn't like when his animators liked each other too much or were too friendly, so he actively tried to create conflict. His belief being that a better product was created when people were in conflict.
*quick note, for some reason, the interviewer asked Marc if he worked on The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, and Marc said no, but for some reason it's stated that Marc did in the above biography. (or maybe I misunderstood..)
Another interesting thing mentioned in the Interview was that Marc acknowledged the different ways people might've perceived Walt.
JOYCE BELANGER
Joyce Belanger first began working at the Mark Twain Riverboat before she worked at Disneyland. The park officially opened July of 1955, with Joyce working only ten days before the park opened. Funnily enough, the main reason why she applied for Disneyland was because her neighbor had read that Disneyland was looking for part-time workers. Joyce and her neighbor were both housewives at the time, so they sent in their applications, with Joyce needing some urging from her neighbor to apply.
During her time working, she got to meet and talk to Walt himself, with her saying in the interview that Walt loved Disneyland, was admired by children, and had childlike qualities.
I didn't really have a specific reason to choose Joyce, as it was once again randomized.
A really interesting thing that was noted in the interview was that while she was working on the Matterhorn ride (Opened in July of 1959), she noticed that Walt was walking around the park by himself and look at the many rides. By the next day, Walt was whisked off to the hospital, most likely because of his lung cancer.
