Map Monday — Adrift

The Springhill-class mining ship CAA Heavy Burden was repurposed by the UNSC as an ordnance transport during the Covenant War. Damaged at the Battle of Kholo, the vessel has entered a slowly degrading orbit around a nearby gas giant.

John Speed (1551/52-1629). A New and Accurat Map of the World Drawne according to ye truest Descriptions lastest Discoveries & best observations yt have beene made by English or Strangers. London, 1651.

This map first appeared in A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World, published by George Humble in 1627. George Humble had previously printed Speed’s The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain, a pioneering work that mapped English counties and maps. The Prospect was a very “English” atlas: it is the first world atlas by an Englishman (though not the first world atlas to be published in England) and does not appear to have circulated much outside of England. It is unclear just how involved Speed was in its production, as he had gone blind in 1625 and the Prospect’s organization in general is not as meticulous as one might otherwise expect from Speed. The map was engraved, possibly by Abraham Goos (fl. 1614-1643), and then hand-colored for sale.

Map illustration for ‘The Foxglove King’ by Hannah Whitten, Orbit Digital, two-page spread 12 x 9.25" (2022) Described as a lush gothic fantasy, this series called for a map that would reflect the opulence of the world that the protagonist, Lore, finds herself in. I knew right away that I wanted to explore stained glass as a style here—more specifically, taking inspiration from the work that illustrator and stained glass master Harry Clarke was doing in Ireland in the early 1900s. I’ve been obsessed with his work ever since I got to see some pieces in person!

The map is framed by the Bleeding God and the Buried Goddess, the two deities whose story sets up the current stakes in the novel. Imagining that this is an actual stained glass window somewhere in the citadel, I also incorporated various symbols mentioned in the book: the candle, roses, sun and crescent moon, golden and silver threads for spiritum and mortem respectively.

Here’s the sketch I sent in for approval, with annotations explaining the visual choices:

The book comes out March 7 in the USA. You'll enjoy it if you're a fan of palace intrigue mixed with dark magic and religious institutions. The regular Orbit hardback has the map in black and white while the special Barnes & Noble edition has it in colour on the endpapers. Prints available in my INPRNT store with white and dark backgrounds!

🐉RATING: 🔥🔥🔥🔥/5 I was up until 2am last night finishing The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah, and it was worth every sleepless minute. After reading a rave review in @pastemagazine, I was eager to get my hands on this book, soon after its release. Having high expectations before turning to the first page, I was not disappointed. The Stardust Thief is a solid, well-paced fantasy with strong character development and evocative world building. Set in the desert, the novel draws from the Middle Eastern classic One Thousand and One Nights and highlights the power of storytelling. Stories can inspire, teach lessons, and rewrite history. There are stories crafted from legend and stories we tell from our daily lives. Some stories are shared and some we keep to ourselves. The plot forms around the quest for an ancient and magical relic. Loulie the merchant, charged with this impossible task by the Sultan, is accompanied by her Jinn bodyguard Qadir and escorted by Prince Mazen and Aisha the warrior thief. As with all quests, the travelers face life-threatening challenges along the way that keep the reader turning pages. The Stardust Thief is filled with ancient magic, hidden ruins, friendship, secrets, and betrayal. I’m looking forward to the next volume of The Sandsea Trilogy, which promises more epic magical world building and new adventures for characters I’ve grown to love. An old military base situated near Voi, Outpost C9 was reactivated after the New Mombasa Slipspace Event. Here, the UNSC tested Paegaas Workshop Spikers recovered from fallen Jiralhanae in the wake of the Great Schism.
