Eurovision 2003 - Number 41 - Manuel Carrasco - "Sueña con ése momento"
youtube
Spain is back and after the huge success of Operación Triunfo the previous year, they've stuck to it. It was nearly as huge as last year, but not quite managing to capture lightning in the bottle twice. Unusually the winner of the competition did not win the Eurovision gala. Manuel Carrasco did not win either, but he was possibly the biggest hit with the watching public and was possibly the favourite going into the final.
For the Eurovision gala, each of the contestants who made it to the final were asked to submit three original songs. Those were whittled down to a single song each which were then voted on. This format was truly being milked!
Sueña con ése momento (Dream About That Moment) was the first of Manuel's song to be eliminated. It's an upbeat song about living a regret free life, not missing out, going for it. It could be from the credits of a Disney film it's so perky and positive. Little guitar details and I won't embarrass myself by trying to name the particular Latin rhythmic figure that's throughout, but it's so instantly Spanish you can feel the sun shining on your face just listening to it.
Neither the song nor Manuel made it to Eurovision but this was only the start of a long musical career. He's had huge Spanish tours, platinum selling albums (23 albums in total with the most recent released in 2023) that are not only hits in Spain but through South America as well. He has had some psychological issues with anxiety surrounding performing, but he's returned again and again. He's even been a mentor on the Spanish version of the Voice Kids.
Like Rosa the year before Operación Triunfo launched a hugely successful star onto the Spanish music scene who not only had popularity but longevity as well. A minor miracle.

Emoción a raudales.

I can create soulless slaves loyal only to my wishes.” Sign me up for some of the XX-34 stuff! Join this episode’s Grue-Crew – Chad Hunt and Jeff Mohr along with guest Chris Peters – as they discuss Dr. Satán (1966), a fun Mexican horror mashup.

Chris Peters joins Chad and Jeff for this police procedural/occult horror. Or is it a spy-gadget, science fiction flick? In this Mexican horror film, you have your mad doctor creating zombies and talking face-to-face with King Devil, a gang of counterfeiters, Interpol agents hunting said counterfeiters, assorted James Bond-type gadgets, a blonde bombshell serving as a liaison between the doctor and the counterfeiters, a woman agent shooting the hell out of a gun, and a plan for world domination. This is a surprisingly fun flick with good acting, a complicated, but well told, story with pathos, strong female characters, and the devil hisownself. Thanks go to former Grue Crew member, Whitney Collazo for picking this episode’s movie!
At the time of this writing, Dr. Satán is available to stream from YouTube.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by Joseph Perry (a founding member of the Classic Grue Crew), is Curse of the Crimson Altar (1968), aka The Crimson Cult, featuring Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, Barbara Steele, Michael Gough, and H. P. Lovecraft (sort of) in a Tigon production!
