The Manga Shelf: KINDERGARTEN WARS and The Struggle to be Loved
Today on The Manga Shelf, a new shonen title, the struggle to transcend your influences, and the root cause of it all.
The Manga Shelf is a column where I go over whatever I’ve been reading recently in the world of manga. Ongoing or complete, good or bad. These articles contain spoilers. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. His codename is “Spade”, real name unknown and unknowable. He’s an assassin, a stalker in the shadows and a kiss of death to the unwary. He will kill anyone, anywhere, for the right…

After catching up with One Piece last month, I took the time to finally dig into a lot of currently running series from Shonen Jump/MangaPlus I’ve missed out on these past few years (Beyond starting & dropping JJK & Demon Slayer). Excited that returning has enlightened me on some real gems like Dandadan, Sakamoto Days, Choujun X, Ron Kamonohashi - Deranged Detective, Cipher Academy, Skeleton Double, Magilumiere, Ichinose Family & Fabricant 100.
Fabricant 100 in particular has been intriguing me for just how much it gives me vibes of FMA, Hellsing & Claymore shot through with a bit of D. Gray-man. The character of No. 100 is just so interesting as a deuteragonist for her hidden ruthless nature (thinking of an incredible moment with No. 100 simply sitting in a chair that gave me a chill lol) & which causes her partner Ashibi to contemplate what he’s willing to tolerate for his goal & the manga’s overall themes about the worth of self-sacrifice & the limits of trust.
I’m honestly really digging the overall output of the post-Chainsawman Jump manga which I think has influenced several creators to push the appealing oddity & embrace the darker or more mature aspects they want to include in their stories & editors eagerly accepting it. Maybe it’s just my own false perception due to having not read a lot of what’s come & gone through Jump for the last 4 decades 😄
Aside from OP, JOJOLANDS & Chainsawman obviously: Fabricant 100, Dandadan, Magilumiere, Choujin X, Sakamoto Days & Ron Kamonohashi are my personal Top 6 picks of current/recent Jump series (which I’ve read so far of course) & highly recommend at least the first 5 chapters of each for anyone interested in something new!

Mangaplus-
Saikyo no Uta "Rugby Rumble" seems like a fun series but the fact that an AI company's involved with it...feels icky :/
looks like after the awful lettering debacle in the first chapter they got someone to fix it but there are still words literally hitting the edge of some of the panels or speech bubbles.
I hope people continue to complain about it in the comments bc if people are gonna be paying for the newly overhauled service they deserve good quality content not AI crap.

Where can I read and request manga?
My mission with my tumblr is to help you find official resources to consume manga; doing it these ways will help the mangaka who work to bring you content and it encourages English publishers to bring over more series.
Check under the cut for legal websites, apps and retailers with detailed information. At the bottom you'll find surveys and ways to contact publishers with requests.
You can use regular retailers to buy digital and print: Amazon/Kindle, Kobo, Barnes and Noble, Bookwalker, Google Play, Apple Books, Nook
There are apps available for buying volumes, chapters, using ticket systems to access free content, or with subscriptions.
Mangamo - $4.99/mo for 200+ titles; titles available for purchases with in-app library
Viz manga - $1.99/mo; titles available to purchase with in-app library (carries titles from Viz, but not their SJ series)
Shonen Jump - $2.99/mo; titles available to purchase with in-app library (carries specifically SJ titles, which are often popular shounen)
Comikey - uses a key system; ability to read for free with ads and patience
Kmanga - app maintained by Kodansha; chapters are often available to read for free through a ticket system and able to purchase
Kodansha - a website where you can create a free reading account. They offer 3 free chapters on all their manga, occasionally feature several free volumes, and run sales on their content somewhat regularly.
MangaPlus - $1.99 or $4.99 for a subscription; will allow a free read of their simulpub series.
MangaPlaza - 7 day free trial; $6.99/mo; [info incoming, seems to have more mature licenses]
INKR - 3 ways to access content; free, coins & 'Extra Membership'. Extra can cost $4.99/mo or $44.99/year and gives you access to content, extra savings and "free ink" that can be traded for their coin system. (Used to be Manga Rock and that was a fun read from them)
MangaPlanet - $1.99/week -> $47.99/year depending on which tier you pay for.
MangaUP - 1 month free trial, $4.99/mo; you can browse their 'vault' to see if things you like are included
Renta! - point system; 1 point = 1 cent; regular bonus points for higher purchases
Mangacat - [currently researching; seems to allow people to independently upload and set prices for viewing; people can also do translations for work. Acts as somewhat of a 'by fans for fans' site. Coin system where 20 coins=1$ with no discounts for larger purchases]
Irodori Comics - hosts 18+, specializes in doujinshi, more info incoming
ComiXology - $4.99/month; a service through amazon that allows you access to comics, manga and graphic novels. Specifically boasts {2400} manga titles.
Animeplanet - has a library of completely free comics and anime through partnerships; seems to host less manga styled comics but free is free.
Manta, Comicle, Webtoon, Tappytoon, Tapas, WebComics, Bilibili will be looked into but they host mostly webtoon style comics
Seven seas has a (mostly) monthly survey that is linked on their homepage at all times. {They will pull from any publisher, including digital only simulpubs}
If you have a bookwalker account, I found a Google doc that you fill out requests and they send them to publishers.
To send suggestions to Viz, use this survey that is listed through their Contact Us page (you select the "Series Suggestion" and will be redirected) {they mostly pull from shogakukan and shueisha titles}
To send suggestions to Kodansha, go to their contact us page and there are 2 useful drop downs; suggest reprints and suggest series, suggest series is also useful to request a print of anything they've licensed digital only. {They pull almost exclusively from Kodansha Japan}
TokyoPop has a discord server where they look at your suggestions in the channel #licensesuggestion
If you are able, in any way, support official English releases. It shows it is a lucrative business decision to continue the manga. Nothing is worse than starting something and being unable to finish it because it stopped getting translated and published.
I will update this post as needed, enjoy your manga! ♡

Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you like fantasy, action, drama, and dragons, lots and lots of dragons, don't be afraid of giving the series a try!
The premise follows two young kids reborn in a magical world, one being a boy who was turned into a dragon with the ability to heal wounds with his flames, and the other a girl who was turned into a knight that can control the energy of the trees in order to create weapons.
Each character will have it's point of view told throughout the story with one set in the past and another in the present.
The only thing connecting the two to each other is the dragon emperor, the biggest authority of its race who also happens to be the boy's new father, and the girl's mortal enemy!

The Coolest Boy Is the Depressed One - You and I Are Polar Opposites
Tumblr media
A new romantic-comedy manga focused on total attraction of the opposite kind has gotten the attention of manga fans over the world. Kocha Agasawa’s You and I Are Polar Opposites focuses on a very outgoing girl named Suzuki who decides to date a very introverted boy named Tani, despite whatever flak they’ll get from their school peers. While the main couple gets really good development, there’s one character that I found to be the most relatable in terms of how people struggle navigating new relationships.
The character I’m talking about is a young man named Taira, who is depressed over how relationships work. Taira first appears in Chapter 4 when he finds out Tani and Suzuki are dating. He doesn’t get they’re dating and has his suspicions because he believes there’s a social pyramid, where people flaunt their relationships to gain status. Taira does confront Suzuki about Tani and Suzuki says that Tani’s cool because he stays true to himself. Taira then reflects about himself in a depressing manner and says he’s been stuck in the social pyramid he complained about.
While Tani is an introvert like Taira, he doesn’t compare himself to others like the latter does. Taira has bashed himself many times even while criticizing others.
One thing that stuck out to me about Taira is his acceptance of himself over why he’s not able to date anyone. He’s a bit envious of Tani and Suzuki’s relationship because they each formed their identities without shame. I remember a time back in high school where I saw a couple just like Tani and Suzuki. The guy looked very nerdy while the girl looked like one of the popular types. I wouldn’t say I was jealous, but I always wondered about myself. Maybe I did have an identity or was trying to form one, but the social hierarchy in my school made me want to fit in with a group of people that I didn’t necessarily belong with. I wanted to be one of the cool kids while being myself when that wasn’t possible. So I think I saw a bit of myself in Taira.
Taira genuinely cares about other people who stay true to themselves due to his own experiences failing at social relationships. He’s just often trapped in his own head. What I love is that Taira’s inner thoughts are always on display in blunt fashion. A lot of teenagers and young adults have felt pressure in how to be close to people they want to be around or avoiding other people as needed.
What I like even more is that Taira has friends who are willing to past his insecurities and provide outside perspectives as needed. When Taira thinks about what makes Tani and Yamada great guys while reminiscing about a personal relationship failure, he stumbles into Suzuki and Tani. Both of them decide to join him to the convenience store where he works. Taira decides to ask why Suzuki wants to hang around someone like himself and Suzuki says that it’s more fun with Taira around. Taira actually shows a smile on his face after her response.
Taira later shows how his values are starting to form as he tries to tell a girl friend (and potential love interest), Azuma, to stand up for herself. The two ran into a bunch of old classmates, some of which dated Azuma and dumped her nonchalantly. Azuma plays it off, but Taira said she deserves so much better and that she should yell back at her exes for dumping her. Azuma is surprised by Taira’s words and realized that she could’ve been more angry. The cutest thing happens when Taira apologizes to Azuma the next day for assuming way too many things about her and giving her unsolicited advice. Azuma didn’t mind the advice, but lets it slide.
When I think about my days (and frankly, most teenagers and young adults) dealing with depression, I look back and realized that I didn’t have many values growing up. I just went with the flow of things. When things got heavy, I didn’t know what to do and just cried. Like Taira, I still act disgruntled about people at times. But after being around a bunch of people who make me laugh/cry all while staying true to themselves (even if they make me sigh) and enjoy being around me, I think to myself, “I finally am starting to gain some kind of identity that I want to develop.”
Having core values is so important and they’re a huge buffer in protecting against depression. Sure, some of them will lead to hardship, but you welcome the challenges they bring because you really care. When I look at Taira, he reminds of someone who’s somewhat going through a personal case of ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy). Taira welcomes everything into his head, is self-aware of his thought process, and learning how to define his values through his good and bad experiences with those around him.
I just hope that more depressed youth who genuinely care about others discover this manga and smile with this beautiful face.
