Bangladeshi Protesters in Maldives Face Arrest, Deportation
Government Should Respect Migrant Workers’ Right to Peaceful Protest
Maldivian authorities say they plan to arrest and deport Bangladeshi nationals involved in organizing a peaceful protest in the southern atoll of G.Dh. Thinadhoo.
The July 25 protest was held, like many others across the region, after a recent crackdown by security forces on student protests in Bangladesh, with more than 200 people killed and thousands injured in the clashes that followed.
Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan accused the protesters of breaching a visa condition prohibiting migrants from engaging in any “political activities.” This condition violates the right to peaceful assembly under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which the Maldives is a party. The Human Rights Committee, the international expert body that provides authoritative interpretations of the covenant, has stated: “Everyone has the right of peaceful assembly: citizens and non-citizens alike,” including foreign nationals, documented and undocumented migrants, and asylum seekers.
Rights groups have called on the Maldives’ government to revoke the decision to arrest and deport Bangladeshi nationals involved in the protest and “uphold constitutional and international human rights conventions.”
The Maldives has the highest proportion of foreign migrant laborers in South Asia, primarily from Bangladesh and India, including tens of thousands of undocumented migrants. Migrant workers in the Maldives face a range of entrenched abuses from employers, including deceptive recruitment practices, wage theft, passport confiscation, unsafe living and working conditions, and excessive work demands, which may amount to forced labor and violate domestic and international law.

coz nah I had the WEIRDEST DREAM EVER. So I’m in school and for some reason the Chainsaw murderer is on the loose, right so I’m in class and my class teacher is the same, the students are all the same, HECK even the seating arrangement is the same. So I’m eyeing my crush coz eye candy baby and the teacher catches me staring and asks me about it so I say there’s a giant dead bug on his table and THERE WAS and then the lights went out and the teacher asked me and my crush to make charts for the classroom about the map of India and then we were arguing with the teacher that a survey and a map are different because one of them was green??? Then the Murderer Alarm TM goes off and he and I are partners to protect each other so we grab our bags and run but he’s teamed up with his friends and abandons me. then the scene shifts to my suburban house in the town and my school bus is standing there and I get in I see my best friend @kaiserkisser just sitting there with MY CLASSMATES? chatting away then she gets up and murders everyone in sight except for me then I find my crush/ safety partner and then we run away and fall into Maldivian waters? and swam into a stilt house and were adopted by an old lady

Recent pursuits of knowledge - Mid June
Recently I've fallen into the typical academic rabbit hole where one thing leads to another and suddenly both your hands are full of more and more things to learn.
By a chance occurrence, a random google search led me to find a Maldivian scientific journal. Since my male audacity (I'm a girl, btw) has long convinced me that I'm in fact capable of anything and everything, I decided I would do a little research and try to publish it in the little time I have before I start medical school. (Which, by the way, is already less than 2 months.)
As it goes, dominoes fell, one by one. First I thought of doing a small study on medicinal herbs of the nation. Something along the lines of testing the effectiveness of 'Dhivehi beys'. However, a little voice in the back of my head would not stop whispering in my ear, begging me to try doing one about dreams. At this point in time, I had no idea what exactly I was looking for. I presented this barely-thought-out plan to my dear friend. She was on board, and she also shared that she also thought dreams were a lot more interesting of a subject than medicinal herbs.
So with a theme in mind, I began looking into past research and well established theories on our subject of study. I learnt quite a few interesting things about Bion's dream theory. Unfortunately, in the midst of preparing our google doc, something else caught my eye. Having shared the google doc containing everything I had found at that point with my friend, I decided to start learning the programming language R. I told myself it would prove to be useful in our study. (For reference, I had begun this adventure at around 10 PM, it was now 2 AM.)
Having learnt all the fundamentals and syntax of the language, I finally went to sleep at 4 AM. Next morning, I slept in. However, as soon as I woke up, I did some more reading on dreams and updates our shared google doc. After begging my friend to please read the damn document, I started working on R again.
For the next few days, I did not do any more reading on dreams. I have since forgotten about the matter if I'm being completely honest. On the other hand, I had found it much more interesting to tinker with R, trying out the different graphical features R had to offer.
You would think I stuck with perfecting R, and would have learnt it to some degree by now, but you could not possibly be more wrong because I am plagued by my interest in way too many things. A jack of all trades, a master of none. I am a museum of abandoned hobbies. R did not escape this cruel fate, because as luck would have it, I soon rediscovered my love for python.
I downloaded python and pygame. It was as if I had reconnected with an old friend.
I am contemplating on whether I should mention my brief encounter with html and css. Some of the very first languages I learnt. I started a simple and goal-less project website as I waited for python to install. It seems useless to mention as this only lasted 5 minutes - or maybe even less.
Today, it's been a week since all of this has occurred. And today, I have no interest in any of these. Which is why I painted today. I am a museum of abandoned hobbies, and sometimes I revisit my old friends.

Although teachers adopt various approaches in their teaching to improve the language skills of the students, reticent behaviour of the students in speaking lessons often frustrates teachers. Hence, the present study aims to investigate the factors contributing to the reticent behaviour of students in ESL classrooms, strategies used by Maldivian students to cope with speaking anxiety and how teachers attempt to alleviate the problem of reticence in ESL classroom. To fulfill this aim, the present paper addresses the following questions 1 what do Maldivian students and teachers notice as the factors contributing the reticence in speaking in ESL classrooms 2 What strategies do Maldivian learners use to cope with speaking anxiety 3 What strategies do Maldivian teachers adopt to effectively cope with student’s reticent behaviour of speaking in ESL class The data was taken from seven participants four teachers and three students through face to face interview. Further, classroom observations was done to gain more information about the behviour being studied. The research findings showed that different social psychological factors, fluency factors and cognitive factors make the learners to be reticent in ESL classroom. Furthermore, students employ various strategies, such as avoidance strategy, seeking help from friends, using mother tongue, writing and rehearsing what they want to say in order to cope with the problem of reticence. The findings also showed that teachers attempt to alleviate the problem by altering the teaching methods and building a stress free classroom environment for the students. Surprisingly, the results showed that teachers give less importance to speaking skill as it not tested in exam. Therefore, it is recommended to include speaking in when Maldivian students do IGCSE exam.

Maldives twitter last week #1
Here are some interesting things Maldivians talked about on twitter last week. A long term collection could be very useful for reflection and analysis.
1. @reallynattu creates satirical voting app
Since this has leaked and people got a glimpse of this super duper top secret extremely sensitive totally legit app we've been working on. So releasing #VoteApp for public use. Tweet your features to add to this. iOS: https://t.co/yZYEepIJ3i Android: https://t.co/8W1jtkTwpz pic.twitter.com/EGbczx12rw
— Nattu (@reallynattu) March 7, 2018
An English translation:
The top text reads "Voteapp". Next to it is a drop down menu that says "Presidential election".
Below that the title says "Candidates". Below this the same portrait of current president Abdulla Yameen is displayed five times in a row, giving the voter a wide range of candidates to vote for.
Below this is the presidents full name, "Yameen Abdul Gayoom". The president doesn't use this version in his campaigning or current activities perhaps to distant himself from his brother Maumoon. Next to this the text reads "The driving force behind the progress that the Maldives is experiencing".
After this is a section where the voter decides what kind of reward they want for voting. They are given a choice of money (from well wishers), employment (a coordinator position), or a flat from Hulhumale'. In the mockup the voter has chosen money, and the options for collecting it (deposit, cheque, or a letter delivered to your residence) are below. As the voter has selected the first option, a field to enter their account number and reward amount sits next to the Bank of Maldives and Maldives Islamic Bank logos.
At the very bottom the text reads "press to vote", with the subtext "I swear to god that I won't change my vote". The word used for "my" is "alhugandu", a relic of the Maldivian caste system, which is the self depreciating word one must use for oneself when talking to someone who demands respect; whether it be your elders, a teacher, or certain dictators. The literal translation of "alhu" is slave.
2. @paperclippenny and @legacyofpain attend mandatory marriage classes

A word for genitals in Dhivehi is "ladhuvethi gunavan", literally "shameful organ".
I'm pretending I'm watching a play. This is a haunting one man show about a man who has given up on life and is clutching on to religion because otherwise his life has no meaning. #marriageclass

If you use the #OccupySaiHotaa and search here you will notice it’s becoming the norm and people are going to Sai Hotaa’s on a daily basis, I myself went tonight with my sisters tonight itself to participate in it and to show my support. It’s already their 2nd time

4. Some men aren't too happy about it
Feminism is beautiful. But why occupy sai hotaa? Why not propose separate sai hotas for women? Men need the privacy to talk the "men talk" at saihota. Likewise, women. Issue-based agendas would facilitate women empowerment instead of trying to create a resemblance of men & women

Peeing in a bottle: Man’s greatest achievement? This is the best that Salafi propagandist Siru “Arts” could come up with to mock the #OccupySaiHotaa movement.
The black text on top reads: "This year the women's groups went to the tea houses next year (they'll go) fishing"
The red bottom text reads: “Next year - trying to pee into a thola bottle far away without utilising any devices”
On the bottom left the silhouette peeing is labeled "men" and the female rage comic face is lablled "women".
Today I've learned a lot. Thanks all who opposed nicely. This needs to move forward. At the same, time addressing other related issues are important. I've already decided to join the #OccupySaiHotaa movement. #twitterlessons

5. Maldives celebrates International Women's Day 2018
When I first started out as a design student, some of my first design idols were female Maldivian designers. Fast forward to 3+ years of working and I've met more female designers than male. Here's an attempt at documenting our female designers. Feel free to add on.#IWD2018

Just got called a "feminazi". Because I've this weird belief that women's bodies are their own business. It's radical, I know. That's why they liken me & my kind to nazis, because believing in female self-determination is roughly equivalent to genocide. 🙄

This #InternationalWomensDay let’s not forget LGBTIQA Dhivehi women who do not have the privilege of being visible, let alone freedom to be. We exist. Claims of intersectional allegiance fall short of true solidarity when our existence is not acknowledged. #ALLWomen

6. Maldives telecom company Dhiraagu gives police full access to opposition activist @Thayyib's SIM
Dhiraagu finally admits they gave police access to @Thayyib’s SIM. Even if it was to honour a court order, why did @Dhiraagu not have the basic courtesy to inform the service recipient of this action? Why did it keep issuing vague statements denying the accusation? https://t.co/G5PfGFW1rV

There was no lawful purpose. Since @Dhiraagu gave @PoliceMv the means to impersonate @thayyib they aided in the commission of a crime: identity fraud. A cloned SIM's real use is not to intercept messages, but to appear to others as the real one, i.e. to commit identity fraud. pic.twitter.com/PF06AOeNLO
— Maumoon Hameed (@maanhameed) March 8, 2018
A sad day, but I see NO other option than to quit @Dhiraagu after 19 years. I wonder why @dhiraagu did NOT appeal like @Apple did on maintaining customers’ trust & their integrity.. Especially knowing the Corruption Index Level of our State.@Mirshan :(@OoredooMaldives :)
— Ashraf Ayu (@Ashraf_Ayu) March 8, 2018
What @Dhiraagu did was a crime of the same magnitude as issuing an ID Card/Passport bearing @thayyib‘s photo & particulars for someone else to impersonate him. What an institutionalized criminal activity!#SIMcloningCompany pic.twitter.com/1fWj6GyEh6

India set to evacuate more nationals from Wuhan this week in IAF’s aircraft - india news
India will carry out a third round of evacuation of its remaining nationals later this week from Wuhan, the central Chinese city at the epicentre of the escalating coronavirus (covid-19) outbreak which has claimed .The Indian embassy on Monday reached out to the remaining Indians in Wuhan and in the province of Hubei, informing them about the evacuation plan. They will be pulled out from the city when the special Indian air force (IAF) aircraft flies back after bringing medical supplies for the provincial government to fight the outbreak.India has already evacuated 647 Indians (along with seven Maldivians) from Wuhan earlier this month in two Air India flights.Around 110 Indians remain in and around Wuhan; At least 10 among them were not able to make it among the initial two batches of the evacuated as they were either running temperatures or their body temperatures were fluctuating.External affairs minister S Jaishankar had recently told Parliament that around 80 Indian students remain in Wuhan.“The government of India will be sending a consignment of medical supplies on board a relief flight to Wuhan later this week to aid and assist China its efforts against the covid-19 epidemic,” the embassy said in a message circulated among the remaining Indians through social media.”“On its return, the flight will have some limited capacity to take on board Indian nationals wishing to return to India from Wuhan/Hubei province,” the message said.“Many Indian nationals currently in Wuhan/Hubei province and wishing to return to India have already been in touch with @EOI Beijing in the past two weeks,” the message said.“We urge also Indian nationals from Wuhan/Hubei who intend to avail this flight for India and have not yet contacted @EOI Beijing to urgently call our hotlines or send email before 1900 hours today,” the Indian embassy message added. The evacuated Indians will have to go through a 14-day quarantine to screen them for the deadly pathogen.Several countries have so far pulled out their nationals from WuhanNepal on Sunday evacuated 175 of its nationals from the Chinese city of Wuhan.Among the other countries to have evacuated citizens from the province and the city are the US, Japan, South Korea, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.Pakistan remains a notable exception despite the fact that hundreds of Pakistani students remain stranded in Wuhan. An NPR report quoted Pakistani students as saying that they will not be evacuated because of “political reasons” – Beijing and Islamabad are very close allies and call themselves “iron brothers”.Pakistani students feel that Islamabad doesn’t want to embarrass China by evacuating its nationals from Wuhan.India had offered to evacuate citizens from other South Asian countries in the first two flights. Only Maldives had taken up the offer. Read the full article

Yesterday was the first day of med school. Safe to say I'm overwhelmed. I do definitely feel that there are sufficient support systems in place to help us reach our full potential. I do really love that we really need to strive for perfection here because otherwise we risk everything. I have a really bad headache at the moment, probably from dehydration. Its very hot out here. One thing I am not enjoying is the lack of WiFi at my accommodation. Also the fact that the library does not open until 9 am and closes early at 9 pm. Even the study area at my accommodation does not open until very late. On the bright side that study area does stay open until midnight. I should drink some water. Bye guys!

[In homophobic Maldives, LES boxer ventures to kiss his girlfriend] British woman boxer April Hunter has mentioned on the social media that homosexuality is strictly prohibited in Maldives. She said: "Anyway, this is our opinion (for homophobia). "She then posted pictures of her and her girlfriend hugging and kissing while on holiday in the Maldives last month. Hunter, a 24-year-old former student of the Football Academy, has participated in two professional games and won both after switching to boxing. According to the Sun, Hunter shared a kiss photo before leaving the Maldives, and then deleted the photo because relatives and friends worried about her safety. She re-uploaded the photos when she returned to the UK, but has now been deleted again. Maldivian law fines same-sex acts, fines 8 years in prison or 100 lashes, and the country ’s extremist groups have harassed and threatened people who publicly support LGBT via the Internet.#lgbtq🌈 #lgbts #lgbt #lgbta #lgbti #lgbtsupporter #lgbtcommunity #lgbt💛💙💙🏳️🌈💗 https://www.instagram.com/p/B8Ke0HelYOF/?igshid=1duv5ebyjtt1f
