Desmond sneaks around snickering to himself, this is gonna be the funniest prank ever. He can't wait to see the birthday girl's face.

Somehow he'd find her when she wasn't paying attention and behind her on a desk, he'd place a Buchimaru doll and a small cake decorated to look like the panda before sneaking out. "Enjoy your special day." It says on the card.

Makoto briefly stepped outside the student council room for a moment, only to conclude a rather lengthy financial discussion pertaining to Shujin's student fundraisers. Lack of sales among each grade meant a lack of funds for the school's extracurricular clubs and sports' team necessities. It didn't make any logical sense in Makoto's mindset, which led to her current dispute allowing the school, itself, to increase their investment in the matter. Slowly but surely she made progress. Not as fast or as immediate as she liked, but patience and passion remained on her side.

The more she pushed, the more chances the school staff would succumb to her demands. It was for the betterment of the school's student body, after all.

After politely seeing the teachers off, the brunette returned to the room and found herself a colorful display of sweet celebrations. And matching gifts to go with it! A small Buchimaru keychain plush sat next to a Buchimaru-themed cake, dressed and iced exactly like the little mascot panda. The card read a simple, sweet message but with no name to put with the birthday presentation, she felt a smidge sad. "Not many know about my birthday...except for..."

Her friends. The Thieves.

A little surprise from her leader, perhaps? Or something delicately chosen by Ann considering the blonde's sweet tooth knew no bounds? It remained a mystery, but not one needing to be solved. Makoto knew this was meant to be enjoyed. Just for her. “Well...maybe I'll leave a bit of cake behind just in case my 'mystery gifter' wants to participate in the festivities."

(人◕ω◕) Sprites, smut, bday art... On top of games that came out within the last couple months that I splurged on - Fate Stay Night (Switch port), Famicom Detective Club's third installment, and of course...

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection released just a couple of weeks ago~ \(人◕ω◕)/ I cannot convey how long I've waited for the sequel of AAI to release out here in the west. You know how back in the day Danganronpa had a fan translation before it got an official dub in the west a couple years later? ... Yes? No? Well, that's because Spike Chunsoft didn't procrastinate like hell. Some people remember the fan translation, and some fans don't. I remember cuz of Let's Players like Pharaoh2091 and Nicob. However, AAI2 has been out in Japan for... how many years now? Oh yes. 13. Yes, 13 years. (人◕ω◕)*** Us international fans relied on a much cherished fan translation that gave us the redemption of the Ace Attorney Investigation series we so desperately needed (Turnabout Ablaze dragged!!! It was good enough til the Yatagarasu reveal, then it fizzled out. (人◕ω◕)***). I played the fan translation myself, for all the bugs it wound up giving my comp back in the day. (人◕ω◕) But I could never get it to be portable as it was intended to be.

... Well, it finally got an official dub. And while I'm grateful to have it in my hands, the "official" names are... well... (人◕ω◕) ... Let's just say it's like Herlock Sholmes for me. I block out the "official" names, myself. The fan dub names are much more... charming, shall we say. But at the end of the day, that's just my preference. If any of you guys loved the official names, I'm happy for you. (人◕ω◕) As for me... 'Tis shall always be Ray Shields, Sebastian Debeste, Blaise Debeste, Sirhan Dogen, Justine Courtney, and Simon Keyes for me. ... And all the other fan dubs, of course. (人◕ω◕) I'm not salty. Not at all. ... I won't even talk about the Objection voices. (人◕ω◕)**.........

Anyway. (人◕ω◕) This has been a good year so far. The games have rolled in for me, I got plenty of new art to lavish my ships with. Here is just a foretaste of the things to come. Praise Vergil-chan for his wondrous work~ \(人◕ω◕)/

"Buchimaru-kun!" Makoto beamed as she reached out and took the small little panda from her friend. "Thank you, Des, I assume you asked the others about this?" Or maybe he just saw her phone strap. Either way, she appreciated the gift.

Makoto was waiting quietly by the school gates, as instructed. No one else interested him other than Aigis, despite waving at any classmates who knew him from their class. Hands clasped together, the minutes counted down and her voice entered his eardrums, so to speak, making him turn around and smile at her. She was so elated over... his activation day as she stated, and he hadn't completely forgotten it either. It didn't seem relevant since this was a normal weekday for everyone else.

"My... birthday? I see. In that case, thank you, Aigis-san. May I open it?" How curious. His hand moved to open the box by unwrapping the bow and looking at its contents. A peculiar and quite beautiful bow tie, much like the one he was wearing, was in his field of vision. Scanning it, he found that it was made with the best materials given to a human tailor. "It is very flattering... do you think it will improve my human attire?" She must have reached that conclusion. She was smart, after all.

Without further ado, he took it out and replaced it with the one he was wearing. "I will cherish it always." His smile widened as a light red color appeared on his cheeks. "This route you have suggested is rather unusual, however... I will go anywhere with you, Aigis-san. The beach is ideal for this perfect sunny weather. I predict that it will last until the evening. No signs of clouds can be detected in the sky or a chance of rain. Let's go, shall we?"

He offered his hand to her after closing the box shut with his old tie inside. This was a far more pleasant day than he had predicted... with her.

Mornings always felt like a rush, but Sae managed to prepare a healthy yet filling birthday breakfast for Makoto. A fresh fruit bowl topped with yogurt, freshly squeezed orange juice, and rolled omelets. Something simple, and not so time-consuming.

"Morning." She greeted the younger sibling with a small wave, multitasking on her own morning responsibilities before slipping on her shoes. "I'll be home late tonight, so feel free to grab dinner without me. I left you a few yen on the counter. Consider it a birthday meal on me." With all said and done, the elder sister slipped out the door without a second thought. Twenty minutes from now, the subway lines would stop running morning rush hours.

Usually, Makoto's morning routine went like this: She'd get up at 5:45am, wash her face and brush her teeth quickly, make breakfast and her lunch, eat, get dressed, fix her hair, and she'd be out the door by 7:30am. Sae was always long gone by the time Makoto was finished making breakfast, rushing out the door with little more than a "Have a good day." But today - with it being her birthday - she had decided to sleep in just a little longer than usual. She could buy a yakisoba bun at school for lunch.

She was surprised to see Sae was still here, running late but here nonetheless. "Good Morning, Sis," she replied, before glancing at the small pile of cash on the counter. "Oh... Thank you. Have a good day!"

She already had plans to go out for dinner with a couple of her friends, but the gesture was appreciated. She offered her sister a small wave and smile as she left.

"Maybe she really does care, after all," she muttered to herself.

[Happy birthday Queen!! For Makoto]

He'd been on quite the journey to get this for her. In typical fashion, what was supposed to be a simple trip to Akihabara to pick up a rare find, turned into a high speed chase as a few thugs had robbed the joint of anything they could grab.

Thankfully, after about an hour of chasing and fighting, he'd been able to recover the gift completely unscathed, and soon met up with her to make the exchange.

"Makoto! Hey!!"

He jogged up to her on the street, looking a bit more disheveled from the chaos he'd endured to get here, with a small box under his arm. A box which contained a talking Buchimaru plush, released during the show's heyday.

"Sorry, I... didn't have time to wrap it-" he admitted with a slight wince. "You wouldn't believe the day I've had-"

Not that he was complaining, mind you. When it came to his friends, he'd do damn near anything to make them happy.

He gently handed her the box, a soft smile on his face.

"Happy Birthday, Makoto."

Things were different now. A good kind of different, one in which the brunette welcomed without hesitation. Changes always happened whether it was an expected circumstance or it suddenly threw itself upon a person's shoulders without forewarning. In some cases, those unforeseen events made out to be the best for an individual. A wake-up call, as many coined it. Some may not be consciously aware of their state of being, or believe they need a drastic reconsideration of their life's choices, but it was a option available for everyone's use. Anyone could restart.

It was a life-saving moment for Makoto's situation. Without the assistance of the Thieves, and Aaron's compassionate nature, her situation would be vastly divergent of the current state of affairs she found herself experiencing. No friends, no reconnection with her older sister, no bright future for her, either. She wouldn't even be receiving a plethora of birthday messages from her friends too! She wouldn't even have friends...

That's not a mindset to mull over for too long. Presently, the brunette patiently waited for Aaron's arrival, no doubt expecting he may be joined by one or two of their friends as a small surprise reveal. That or he dragged her somewhere privately to hand over a birthday gift. Just for her to see. The warm, spring weather felt rejuvenating while she sat crossed leg on a nearby bench. He didn't forget, did he? Could something be holding him up? Subway traffic shouldn't be much trouble at this time of day however...

...there wasn't any further need for worry, expect for the unkempt black hair and crooked glasses on the approaching boy's face. "...hey, I was about to call you. Everything alright?" She attempted to question him further, but it seemed like Aaron knew just how to calm the girl's growing anxieties.

A Buchimaru plush, but a very special one. A squeeze-and-talk Buchimaru. Rare, and almost impossible to find nowadays.

"Y-Y-You found...the My Talking Friend, Buchimaru?! Around here!?" Her hands immediately grabbed the panda squishing his mid-section and listening to a clear, crisp voice reverberate beneath the soft texture. "It even sounds brand new!! Like...like you got it straight out of the box!!" Another addition to her growing collection! Her smile widened to its fullest extent. She even let out a soft squeal pushing his stomach several more times. It was a perfect gift!! But...

...wasn't she acting a little too excited? Or too giddy? That's embarrassing...

"...in, uh...any case..." Makoto returned to a more poised, proper stance with the bear held in both arms. "...this is...very considerate of you, Aaron. I'll make sure to take extra care of him." Since it came from him.

I’m having a mix of heartfelt sadness and some sense of anger (towards a certain company) right now

I know I’m mainly a Precure fan over here but I started my journey into the Japanese language, anime and manga when I first picked up and rented that Sailor Moon S DVD at a local hobby shop.

As I was watching the Region 1 DVD, I made a decision to try to watch it in another language because the old Pioneer DVD had both English and Japanese. I, a wee little depressed year 9 student was blown away by the voice acting from the Sailor Moon Japanese voice cast that I decided to look them up on the internet and find out the women behind these iconic characters.

What I realised was these women were not only around both my parents’ ages. They were in other anime that I literally grew up in, watching their anime in English. I decided to watch some of my childhood anime in those languages, just to hear how they performed. Spoiler alert: They we’re amazing.

And that’s how I started my journey into pursuing learning the Japanese language all the way to University where I graduated with a degree in that field.

The Sailor Moon Japanese voice cast were like those aunties (yes I am Asian) or older sisters (depending on the region) that you never knew but you connected with them through the anime that you have watched over the years. You watch them grow older seeing their public photos on news sites and social media through the events they attended, as you, yourself grows older.

The fact that we lost one of them in the 8th of September 2024 will be one of the most heartbreaking things to find out for me and a lot of people this year. Coincidently the shock announcement came on the birthday of one of the beloved Sailor Senshi makes it even more tragic.

Emi Shinohara was an fantastic seiyuu/voice actress. She worked in a lot of people’s childhood shows, many of us would have known her for her role as the ever reliable, ever strong Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter in the 90s anime of Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon (90s Sailor Moon for short). Others would have known her for Kaho Mizuki from Cardcaptor Sakura or if you’re old, B-Ko from Project A-Ko. However the majority of people (anime normies) would have mostly known her as the voice of Kushina Uzumaki from the Naruto Shippuden anime.

Her later years in life would really reflect on her roles she would later have with the aforementioned Kushina. A lot of younger seiyuu would have known her in Fafner (I hear that anime a lot on Twitter through some of the seiyuu involved and I know the character designer for Gundam Seed worked on the designs).

Probably the roles that really stood out for me personally asides her roles in Sailor Moon and CCS, would be an obscure 2007 anime called Claymore. That anime was one of those that the unfortunate case of “manga was still ongoing while the anime was airing situation”. However props to the casting staff involved in this anime because they brought in a chunk lot of veteran seiyuu that would get to show off their years of experience into this one single 24 episode anime. Emi Shinohara was no exception to this! She voiced the ax-crazy, hella insane, ultra mega bitch Ophelia and oh boy it was a ride and an experience to listen to her voice from the beginning right to the death of her character. I personally would recommend watching this anime for the voice acting in there, not for the anime itself because of its situation at the time.

Her music prowess was no joke either. Of the original 5 seiyuu of the Sailor Moon cast, she was definitely the most experienced and you can clearly experience it though the Moon Revenge live for a Christmas event that happened 31 years ago. She has released her own albums during the 90s as well and 100% she slayed on every character song that came to her during her active years in the 90s

I really cannot believe that Emi Shinohara has left us. The Sailor Moon community is definitely in mourning right now for this iconic voice actress. Our heart goes to her husband, Tokusatsu actor Hiroshi Watari and their only son who made a heartfelt and saddening message to Shinohara’s own personal Twitter account.

And our hearts also go towards the remaining 4 seiyuu of the original Sailor Moon voice cast, who out of the two who have social media, are currently in a state of devastation and sadness to have lost a fellow cast mate who they have worked and truly bonded together on the 5 years of Sailor Moon’s airtime from 1992-1997.

In particular fellow cast mate Rica Fukami who she considered Emi Shinohara as her twin, having being born on the same year, month and day. To the point they even have their own duo name together back in the 90s as Funky Twins, where they last year held a 3 day fan live together. Who would have thought that this would be the only time they would be together for such a special occasion. Let’s not forget the constant amazing and interesting quote tweets interactions between the two of them since Shinohara started her Twitter account a few years back from the constant birthday congratulations, to recently finding a hidden Sailor Moon treasure while Rica Fukami was in the middle of decluttering. The fact that we will never get this kind of interaction ever again is heartbreaking but it will live on through the past interactions that they have shared together.

I will briefly mention my anger towards Toei for losing this once in a lifetime opportunity to reunite the original 5 Sailor Moon voice cast for the 30th anniversary of the franchise. The fact that their last public reunion together was for a DVD commemoration in Akihabara, late 2009 has given me this sense of anger, frustration and sadness inside me that I will never forgive them for. And we will never have an opportunity like this ever again.

With that part out of my head. I will now leave this insanely long message with a single part of a message that Emi Shinohara’s son has written in that post on Twitter, “the name ‘Emi Shinohara’ will continue to live on as long as people remember her voice and the roles that she has portrayed”

Thank you Mrs Emi Shinohara for the past nearly 40 years of service to the anime and voice acting industry. We, the fans, will never forget you and we definitely will look back to the voices and songs that you have given us over the years. Rest in Peace. 🕊️💚
