Fluffcember Day 07: Candied Almonds
Fandom: Digimon Tamers
Characters: Ruki, Rumiko & Renamon
Genre: Family Fluff
Length: 832 words

“Kaa-san,” Ruki groaned, as her mother leaned onto her.
This had been a bad idea from the start. It had been, really. University allowed for Ruki to miss a weak, but accompanying her mother to Germany? Bad idea. Real bad. Taking Renamon along was the only thing preventing her from being driven to insanity.
“Oh, c'mon, Ruki-chan,” her mother lulled and once more tried to pin those stupid moose antlers made from fabric onto her. “You're gonna look soooo cute.”
“I do not like looking cute,” Ruki replied and caught her mother’s hands. She turned around to where Renamon was hiding in a tree, just as her partner tended to do. Right now, she wished for nothing more than a little help. Especially as – technically speaking – Digimon were no longer a secret. So really, Renamon could help her.
“I'm just saying.” Her mother had taken a bit too kindly to the German Glühwein, having drunken three cups of the beverage. Hence it was no big surprise she was tipsy. Ruki just wished that her mother's manager had come along or something.
The Germans did not pay them any mind. Especially not in this city, where Japanese people made up a sizable chunk of the population.
“Ruki,” her mother urged. “Don't be like this.”
“Kaa-san.” She took that stupid hairband out of her mother's hands. It was stupid, really. All of it was.
“I'm just sa'ing. Since you moved out, we barely ever do something together…”
For a moment Ruki was tempted to reply, that they had not done a terrible lot together before. After all her mother's work had made her travel the world with Ruki mostly being raised by her grandmother. But then again, she really often did not visit homes for a week or two in row since she had started university.
Great. Her mother's guilt tripping worked. Still. What difference did it make? Nobody knew her here. “Fine,” she groaned. “But you'll stay off the Glühwein for the rest of the evening.”
“Sure.” Her mother grinned at her in a way that did not befit a model at all. She patted Ruki's cheek, before breathing in the cold winter air. “You wanna look for something for Kaa-san?” Apparently, her mind had now moved on to her own mother. “Or maybe for your boyfriend?”
Ruki sighed. She might as well. Thus, she allowed her mother to drag her across the Christmas Market, that was so much bigger than the one in Tokyo. Something that seemed even more unbelievable to her, considering that apparently in Germany even small towns had their own Christmas markets.
Still, she could not help but smile as her mother tried to talk some store owner into giving her a discount on a pretty glass lantern, she was planning to buy for Ruki's grandmother.
At times it really felt more like Rumiko was Ruki's older sister, really. And Ruki knew her mother had still been in high school, when she had been born, so maybe it was not a big surprise. She just hated that at times she felt like the one adult in the room, when she spent time with her.
***
By the time they reached their hotel near the main train station, Ruki felt as she would do at the end of a day spent exploring the digital world. They had bought gifts. Lots and lots of gifts. What had started reasonable – with the lantern for Ruki's grandmother and a set of chocolates for Ryou had quickly escalated, as Rumiko had insisted on buying something for the other Tamers as well.
At least she was spent when they returned to the hotel, with Ruki bringing her to bed, where her mother promptly collapsed into a peaceful sleep. Their hotel room was a fancy one – no wonder with her mother's budget – one that even featured a balcony overlooking the city.
It had started snowing on their way back, the clouds covering up the reflection of the digital world in the sky.
With a long sigh Ruki leaned against the balcony's balustrade when Renamon finally appeared beside her.
“I could've used your help, you know?” Ruki muttered without looking at her partner.
She could hear the amusement from Renamon's reply, though. “You've handled yourself well enough.”
Ruki looked back into the room. “I don't get her, you know? I never have.”
“I know,” Renamon said. She looked at the sleeping woman as well. “But I think that all you have to understand is, that she cares about you, but does not know how to express it.”
“Probably,” Ruki admitted. She was still wearing her winter coat. Without further comment she gripped into the pocket and pulled out the paper bag she had acquired before, handing it to Renamon.
“What is it?” the Digimon asked, as Ruki only smiled.
“Candied almonds. I thought you might like them.”
There was a faint smile on Renamon's face, as she opened the bag and took out a single almond. “Thank you.”

Rumiko: Cute huh
Rumiko: Made me think of you
Ruki: ...
(Later)
Ruki: I just got bocchi’d by my own mom.
Takato: Oh there’s no coming back from this one.
Ryou: Surprised you came back to tell everyone how badly you got bocchi’d.

I always found it strange that Jenrya and Shiuchon's mom, Lee Mayumi, has an official maiden name yet the other Tamers' moms only has their husbands' surname:
Takato: Matsuda Takehiro and Matsuda Yoshie
Ruki: Makino Rumiko (Ruki's grandma's surname is Hata)
Juri: Katou Hajime and Katou Shizue
Hirokazu: Shiota Hirofumi and Shiota Takako
Kenta: Kitagawa Shunsuke and Kitagawa Akemi
Jenrya: Lee Jan'yuu and Lee (Yanase) Mayumi
No other moms in Tamers are provided a maiden name except Mayumi, which is strange if you think about it.
But then I learned something awhile back about Chinese and maiden names. Chinese women don't take their husbands' surnames, they keep theirs and only their children inherit their fathers' name.
I felt stupid because of course naming culture is different across the world, I grew up in a culture that doesn't even make use of surnames, why was I surprised xp
But anywho, Mayumi is Japanese. As such it's only natural she'd still take her husband's surname, Lee, but due to cross-cultural reasons, she still has the option to keep her maiden name which she may or may not have done had she and the rest of her family lived in China
Tl;dr
Cross-cultural marriage leads to a fictional Japanese woman having an official maiden name while the rest of her fellow moms don't

But seriously tho, if Ruki's mom and dad are divorced, then why is her name still Makino Rumiko? In this essay I will-

So I have a question or two on Ruki. First of Is her relationship with her mother good or has it degraded. Has Ruki ever tried a full mohawk and not a faux-hawk?
Well, by the end of Tamers it's clear that Rumiko accepts her little punk daughter and reinforcing this by giving her the new shirt with the full heart and she herself getting a matching one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we have the Message In The Packet CD drama in which Ruki says how her relationship with both Rumiko and Seiko (grandma) got better, not perfect but it's definitely better and I quote: "I’ve been getting along pretty well with Grandma… and Mom… It’s still kinda strange though. It’s not that I don’t like it… I think…" so I imagine that she's more open with them.
And lastly, we have the 2018 CD drama where (I, personally think) something goes off track: Ruki mentions that by her university years, Rumiko forced her into modeling. This make me feel as if Rumiko was regressed to that times when she made Ruki participate in modeling sessions (and use clothes she clearly hates) as if what happened in the D-Reaper arc didn't happened at all.
It is now that in order for me to not feel bad about it, I'd like to think that Ruki accepted to be a model to save some good money (to later spend it on bikes (ง ื▿ ื)ว) and well, maybe Rumiko made sure for those sessions to not include dresses or something Ruki might feel uncomfortable wearing, maybe some unisex clothes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but these are just my own speculations as in the CD drama, Ruki just mentions that she got easily bored being a model and went for Freestyle Motocross instead.
So to resume: is hard to tell how her relationship with Rumiko might be during her adult years if we consider the 2018 CD drama, but if we stop at the Message In The Packet then for sure they will have a good relationship.
And about the mohawk, it's hard to tell since we basically didn't got any information about how the Tamers look by 2018, we just know what they've been doing and that they are 28 years old but honestly, I personally can't picture her getting a mohawk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but who knows.

Question. What's more poignant, Ruki in a loveless marriage (to a guy) or Ruki being alone because the trauma of what happened in Tamer's? Cause I feel that if I just went, nope, to her character growth shown in the series it misses the point a bit.
Okay
So
I don’t think you follow my main so you may not have known this
But the topic of obviously gay women entering loveless marriages with men happens to be HUGELY relevant to the present goings-on in one of my other current obsessions (it has a zestful flavor), so this question is tugging at my heartstrings in JUST the right way
So if that was by accident, or even if it was on purpose, kudos
Anyway, to answer your question, I definitely think Ruki being in a loveless marriage to a guy is by far the most poignant scenario. Perhaps made even moreso by the likelihood of the scenario. The Hata family (Ruki’s mother’s maiden name) is clearly a wealthy one, and likely has been for generations (I’m basing this assumption on the size and style of their home), and it’s not uncommon for wealthy families to have arranged marriages in order to keep the family fortune among the already-established. Now, there are clues that Rumiko went against her family’s (or perhaps just her father’s) wishes for her, and that Seiko chose to support her in this. Thus, the scenario I’m imagining is that another wealthy family is looking to marry their son into wealth and turn to the Makino family. Neither Rumiko nor Seiko are interested, but Ruki, despondent and directionless, agrees to it, simply because no other path has yet presented itself.
And then I cry myself to sleep thinking about the long-term implications of this situation and rewatch Episode 39 for the billionth time.

Ruki: We have too much heart merch.
Ruki: Stop making heart merch!
Ruki: Or else...?
Rumiko: Listen, Ruki, I'm not going to fight you on this. I just know deep in my heart that we do now and always will need more heart merch.
Rumiko: As the sole provider of heart merch in this household, I understand this better than anyone.

~Ruki: sometimes she still says "C'mon Ruki, this dress suits you so well!", but she understands that I don't like those wimpy things. And I started to accept how she really is.
~Ryou: The Makino's women aren't so beautiful? All of them--
