I do need to sit down today and draft a new budget even though it scares me. I need to be realistic about it too. I really don't enjoy budgeting. Neither me nor wifey are especially gifted with it, and it makes us both anxious and avoidant, so it's really unfortunate.
Definitely one of the tasks for the personal assistant chart once I can afford one.
#for any one wondering:#i have an ongoing understanding with my wife that should our finances ever allow it there are two services i want to hire out#household maintenance care and the phone call/mail/email/bills bermuda triangle of disaster#between the two of we are so fucking bad at these things but they are so essential to basic functioning#that it genuinely harms us when we fuck up#so for now we keep chugging along#lots of radical acceptance and self compassion and executive functioning support strategies to try and keep the plates spinning#but some day theoretically we'll have the money to pay a freelancer to come in and spend 1-2 hours a couple of days per week#just.....helping us deal with some of this stuff#i'd pay them very well#i'm thinking something like $100/day for maybe 2 hours work?#i just want someone who will sort and respond to my mail for me and schedule my appts/log them in my calendar and shoot me a text about it#someone who washes all the dishes down to baseline once a week and helps me do organizational planning/reworking once a month#not big stuff by any means but life changing to me#especially if their role is largely body doubling with me while I do other cleaning/organizing tasks so double the work can get done#anyway its purely hypothetical now and for a long time to come but i keep track of what tasks we may need help with#so i can prioritize and understand how many hours of support we would really need each week

Good Intentions Part Twenty-Seven
The fallout from Silco's most recent stunt sends shockwaves through the Haven... but not as much as his latest attempt to ensnare you.

The fallout from Silco’s stunt kept the Haven occupied for almost a month.
Not only had he leaked Shimmer into the streets, he had ordered his distributors to offer it at one-third the usual price. Anyone who wasn’t fully recovered had been unable to refuse an offer like that, and the patient relapses you’d seen in the neighborhood had numbered in the triple digits.
The only thing that had kept you going was that the neighborhood had poured out support for the Haven. Jazper and Ronid had come by with two additional doctors, hired temporarily to help assist with the recovery efforts. The other members of the Undercity Innovation Committee had donated other things: enough food to support the Haven without sparing volunteers for kitchen duty, free electrical and maintenance work, help writing grant proposals, and some extra donation money.
Even people who had nothing to do with governing the Undercity had reached out to support the Haven, doing everything from clearing rubble from the entrance to guarding the building at night.
It was humbling, and you worked around the clock to take care of everyone who had chosen to keep fighting their addiction.
Fortunately for both the Haven and the struggles of its patients, Silco’s Shimmer sale seemed to have been an isolated incident. The dealers had been pulled from the area and no one had seen them since that fateful night. It didn’t speed the recovery of the people who had been impacted, but it helped reduce the number of people who came in needing help.
An unexpected downside to Silco’s new, self-imposed business limitations was that he was doing his best to start communicating with you again.
Every day, you found a letter waiting outside of your door. More often than not, you found a different letter waiting on your desk at the end of the day. You had briefly started avoiding your office, but the envelopes appeared on your pillow.
No matter how many people you asked, no one admitted to delivering letters for Silco. Clearly, he had someone at the Haven who was willing to do some work on his behalf. The problem was that you had no idea how to figure out who it was. There were more unfamiliar faces in the Haven than familiar ones, these days, and it wasn’t as if you could start turning people away on suspicion that they were working for the head Chem Baron himself.
You suspected that Silco wanted to meet. It was only a suspicion, since you refused to read any of the letters. You didn’t know who was delivering them, so it wasn’t as if you could send them back to him unopened to make your point. You settled for burning them, leaving enough for whoever was sneaking into your office to see that you had never opened a single envelope.
But at last, the number of patients began to dwindle. Having beaten their Shimmer addictions back for the moment, people left the Haven. Some of them came back to work with other patients or to volunteer on a more permanent basis. That helped, but you were still relieved when the number of patients from the surprise Shimmer release returned to the single digits.
The day your borrowed doctors left the Haven was the day you finally relaxed. The remainder of the patients were in the final stages of their withdrawal and actively working toward recovery. Things were wrapping up nicely, but there was also the benefit of having fewer people in the Haven who could be delivering Silco’s letters.
And yes, you did feel bad about counting that as a benefit.
You stopped by your office that night, tired almost beyond reason. Perhaps that was the reason you were filled with near-rage at the sight of the envelope on your desk.
You snatched it up from the desk, but your hands refused to obey your commands from there. Instead of flinging it into the fireplace, they ripped it open and pulled the page free. Silco’s angular writing was difficult to read in the shivering light of the fire, but you managed.
My dearest philanthropist,
I would say that I have given up all hope of you reading my letters, but I know two things: firstly, that you are insatiably curious. If you were not, I believe our association would not have lasted nearly so long as it has.
Secondly, and more importantly, you know that I would not reach out idly. Surely you know me well enough by now to suspect that I would make an offer.
Of course, you would have recognized far earlier than this that I was interested in bargaining with you, but it has been reported to me that you have yet to open a single one of my letters.
Before I propose any further deals, I will assume you are still upset about your lost opportunity to work for Piltover. Have you not yet realized that I acted as I did as a favor to you? Piltover has never worked toward any ends that did not benefit them directly. It is likely that they would have positioned you as a scapegoat when their task force failed… and it would have.
In any case, you would have lost your reputation in the Undercity as surely as you believe it has suffered across the river. The recovery of a reputation in Zaun is a far longer and more arduous process than it is in Piltover.
I find myself rambling in this letter, and I blame you. With no guarantee of when you will finally open one of my messages, I am forced to write from somewhere softer than my mind. Perhaps not my heart, but somewhere nearer its vicinity than I am accustomed.
Allow me to make my offer before this letter grows still longer: come to The Last Drop. I want to discuss terms with you face-to-face. For my end of the deal, I will vow to keep Shimmer from ever entering the Haven’s neighborhood again. You can decide what you are willing to give in exchange.
I hope to see you soon, sweetheart.
- Silco
You stared at the page long after you had finished reading. You didn’t trust Silco’s offer - not in the slightest. But if there was a chance you could keep Shimmer off of the streets permanently, wouldn’t you be far more foolish not to look into it?
That was what had gotten you into this mess, and the one before it, and the one before that, but what was your alternative? If there was any hope you could help someone, how could you refuse to take the risk? Even if you were the one who would suffer if that hope turned out to be false.
You didn’t burn the envelope. Not because you were tired, or feeling sentimental. If you were going to show up at The Last Drop, you were going to make sure Silco knew you were coming. Whoever was leaving the envelopes had clearly told him that they were going unread. With any luck, they would report back to him that you had read this one.
Silco would know what it meant.
You slept soundly that night, dreams held at bay for the first time in well over a week. The plan had been formulated, and there was nothing left to do until the following day.
Just after ten the next morning, you left the Haven. Okkan had wanted to come with you, but you had assured him and Fletcher that you were fine. Yi was sleeping after her late guard shift; she would have been much more difficult to convince.
The Lanes were quiet, as they always were in the morning. In the weak midmorning light, you could almost consider them peaceful. Fortunately, you also weren’t stupid, so you kept your guard up to avoid any enterprising and motivated pickpockets deciding to practice their craft first-thing in the morning.
The door to The Last Drop was unlocked, and you let yourself in without a fuss. If the unlocked door hadn’t convinced you that Silco knew you were coming, the sight of the main bar would have.
The mismatched tables and chairs that typically filled the space in front of the bar had been cleared away. Instead, there was a small table draped with a white tablecloth and topped with a small flower arrangement. Chairs sat on either side of the table, angled so that neither had its back to the main door.
“Good morning,” Silco greeted, walking around the bar.
He looked incredibly… domestic. His sleeves were rolled up so he could carry a silver tray with a cover on it. You watched dumbly as he set the tray on the table, worried for a moment that it would hold a severed head or something equally horrifying, but he removed the cover to reveal breakfast.
The plates, both bearing your favorite breakfast - when had he found that out? - were placed in front of either seat, while a smaller dish of pastries ended up beside the flowers. Silco tucked the tray and the cover behind the bar and rejoined you.
“Do not worry,” he told you with a smile. “I remember that you do not trust the food I offer you. You choose your preferred seat and I will gladly sample everything first so you know it is trustworthy.”
You frowned for a moment, wracking your mind for what he could be talking about. At last, a shadowy memory appeared, one in which you were waiting for your first meeting with Silco. You hadn’t touched the food he had sent out for you. Apparently, he was determined that the same thing wouldn’t happen again.
You took a seat, watching as Silco sat opposite you. He cut a bite of food, checking to be sure that you were watching him.
“You don’t need to do that,” you told him quietly. He paused, eyes searching your face intently. “If you were going to kill me, you would just kill me. Poison isn’t really your style.”
Silco’s smile faded. “I would prefer that you trust me because I have proven myself trustworthy, but I suppose that is a point well-made. Poison has never been a favorite tool of mine, and never one I would deploy against you.”
You hummed skeptically and took a bite of your breakfast without further comment.
“If I may,” Silco said, breaking the silence that had fallen between the two of you, “what drove you to open one of my letters?”
You pondered the question, taking a sip of water before offering your answer. “I’m not really sure. Maybe I just hoped you had something worthwhile to say.”
Silco’s polite smile turned to something sharper. “And I assume, from your presence here, that you were satisfied?”
The way he purred ‘satisfied’ wreaked havoc on your body, not least because your psyche had decided that now was the perfect time to play back all of the hyper-realistic dreams you’d had about him over the past month.
With any luck, none of that was showing on your face. “Maybe I’m just curious to see what price you plan to ask in exchange for keeping Shimmer off of the streets.”
Silco’s face grew serious once more. “I meant what I wrote. You name what you are willing to give for it.”
“Last time, you had a specific price in mind,” you remarked, half-hoping for another smirk.
Silco didn’t take the bait. “I mean for this to be a negotiation, one taking place between two equal parties. You name your offer and I will decide if it is fair.”
A distinct throb between your thighs let you know that your libido would be thrilled to make the same deal as you had last time. Your brain warned that it was a bad idea, but that voice was growing steadily quieter under the flood of lust surging through your body.
It would be easier, you realized, if Silco just wanted your body. If you could narrow down what he wanted to something as simple and limited as the option to fuck you a few times a month.
But in the light of your newly realized feelings, you couldn't ignore that he hadn't done that. Silco hadn't given any hint of what he might want from you, but he also hadn't limited you to making offers based on physical pleasure.
It was so much worse. You would rather keep yourself from having any hope at all rather than risk everything for the slim possibility that he felt a shadow of what you did.
You set your fork down, taking a deep breath to steady yourself. You had come here for a purpose - to keep Shimmer away from the Haven. It didn't matter if doing that meant denying yourself. You were used to that. The important thing was helping people. That was all that had ever been important.
“If we want this to be a business discussion, maybe we should go to your office,” you suggested. Silco watched you blankly, and you expanded, “I've seen you do quite a bit of business and none of it ever happened in an empty bar.”
“Would you care to finish your breakfast first?” Silco asked.
Your stomach was right with nerves, with fear that you wouldn't be able to come to an agreement with him. Even the few bites you had taken were sitting heavily.
You shook your head. “Not unless you need the time to finish yours.”
Silco stood immediately. “Unnecessary. Follow me.”
You were amused despite yourself as you followed Silco to his office. It wasn't as if you hadn't been there before - you knew the way. But if he wanted to lead, there was something more to it. Maybe he just wanted to prove that he was willing to have you at his back.
Silco’s office was precisely the same as it had been the last time you were there. The desk spoke of the messy mind and busy life of someone doing his best to rule a city. The wicked-looking lance he used for his eye was kept carefully behind the desk, but it was softened slightly by the neon doodles on the handle. The furniture was just as austere as ever, though it was less intimidating when you could vividly remember every time you had been sprawled naked across each surface.
Somehow, it felt like home, and that made your stomach tighten reflexively with nerves.
Silco sat behind his desk, motioning for you to sit across from him. When you did, he folded his hands on the desk’s surface, fixing you with a mismatched stare. “If you prefer to get straight to business, let us do so. What are you willing to give me in exchange for the Haven’s neighborhood remaining free of Shimmer?”
You smiled mirthlessly. “I have nothing you want.”
“I wouldn’t go that far, my dear,” Silco said, openly admiring you.
The exchange was familiar, a faint echo of the conversation that had started you both on this path. There was a gleam in Silco’s eyes, a fond reminiscence that made you want to smile at him in earnest.
But you gathered your willpower and shook your head. “We can’t make that deal again, remember? When you came to the Haven last month, you said that was the only chance to resume our original deal. I turned you down.”
“I could be persuaded to make an exception.”
You arched a brow. “Really? This would be the first time I’ve ever seen it. Why?”
“I miss you,” he admitted openly. When you frowned, he leaned toward you. “No lies or manipulations - I have missed you. I have felt your absence every day since we ended our meetings.”
“You missed me, so you released Shimmer outside of the Haven?” you asked, wincing at the open hurt in your voice. “You missed me so badly that the only thing you could do was try to destroy everything I’ve worked toward for the past few years of my life?”
“I had to-” Silco broke off with a rueful laugh. “I had to give you a reason to come back to me.”
You gaped. “So you-?”
Silco raised his hand, cutting off your protestations. “No, pet, let me say this. I need to, and I need you to listen. And if you still hate me afterward, I will let you live in peace. No more Shimmer and no more contact with me, I give you my word.”
After a moment of consideration, you sat back in your chair and motioned for him to continue.
With a deep breath, he did. “I know you have no need for me. Everything I provided for you, you are well capable of getting for yourself. You have managed without my security team, you found support for your Haven that has nothing to do with my donations, and you stood against Shimmer sales in the area. You have built a fine enterprise. I- I have nothing to offer you anymore.”
“So I had to resort to underhanded dealings.” Silco shook his head with a rueful little smile. “Perhaps you do not realize how well the Haven withstood my Shimmer. I pulled my dealers, but they were far less profitable than I had expected. I would have withdrawn them regardless. I did regret my actions, but they were born of desperation. You wouldn’t agree to a new deal, and I realized how capable you are even without assistance from me. ”
Silco pressed his hands against the desk’s surface, making grim eye contact with you. “I hoped that I could push you into answering me. More than that, I hoped to force you into making another deal with me, into seeing that you could not survive down here without my protection. I was wrong. You have made a place for yourself here and - more importantly - you have found a way to care for the people of Zaun. I see what you have done to change and shape their lives and it has forced me to accept what I have known for months: I am yours.”
The kind thing would be to say something in reply to that revelation. You wanted to, but it was so far from anything you had expected him to say that you couldn’t do anything but gape at him. Silco’s gaze stayed trained on your face, but there was a tightness around his eyes and mouth that spoke of nervousness.
“If-” You broke off to clear your throat, trying to make your voice sound less waveringly uncertain. “If you aren’t being sincere, please don’t say that. Don’t joke about it or use it to manipulate me. Please.”
“Manipulate you?” Silco repeated, sounding irritated. “Pet, you don’t seem to understand that I have done the very opposite. I have given you the keys to everything I can offer. I have given you the simplest possible way to manipulate me.”
“I wouldn’t,” you assured him instantly. He lifted a brow and you repeated, “I wouldn’t.”
“And why wouldn’t you?” he asked. “You could everything you wanted without being required to give anything in return-”
“Because I care about you, Silco,” you snapped.
Immediately afterward, a deathly silence fell in the office and you leapt to your feet. There was nothing to do but leave after that.
You didn’t make it even halfway to the door before Silco caught your arm, holding you steady as he stared down into your face.
“If you are being insincere, please don’t say that.” You might have thought he was mocking you if he hadn’t looked so terribly concerned.
“Silco, why would I possibly lie about that?” you asked. “If you’re right and you’ve given me everything, why would I lie about my feelings? To not use the keys you gave me?”
“You-” It wasn’t often that you saw Silco thrown off his game, but he seemed to struggle to find the right words. “You love me?”
Strictly speaking, neither of you had said anything about love. But in the privacy of your thoughts, you had realized weeks ago that your feelings for Silco had run deeper than you had ever assumed. There was no other reason you would still care about him after everything he had done.
Besides, you had already come this far.
“Yes.”
Silco was studying you with the stunned, slightly suspicious look of a mad scientist watching a successful experiment and you were starting to think this entire meeting had been a mistake.
“Maybe we should-”
Your suggestion was left forever unfinished as Silco kissed you suddenly, deeply, and with such fierceness that it took your breath away. When your lungs were screaming, you pushed him away. He didn’t go far, staying close enough that you could feel his rapid breathing across your kiss-swollen lips.
“Feels like we should talk about this.”
Silco chuckled against your neck. “I can think of several more productive ways we could spend our time…”
Everything in your body voiced a sudden and vehement opinion that Silco was right, and that sounded like a much better idea. You lifted your face for another kiss and Silco was quick to indulge you.
The next few minutes were a bit of a blur. There was kissing and touching and the marvelous scent of Silco - how could you have missed one person so much? - and when it was over, you were lying naked on his bed. Silco was finishing stripping off his own clothes, eyes already devouring you with a predatory eagerness that probably should have scared you.
When he was as bare as you, Silco joined you on the bed. He was on top of you almost immediately, kissing every bit of skin he could reach and exploring the rest with his wandering hands. You arched against him, fighting for as much contact as possible. It was like your body was drinking him in, soaking up everything you had been missing out on since your deal had been on pause.
Silco’s fingers were even more dextrous than you remembered, plying your flesh and molding you still closer. If there was a breath of space between you, it was only so that he could sneak a touch into that same spot. You felt like you were on fire, but it only drove you to kiss him with more desperation.
When you couldn’t stand it anymore, you reached down and took his length in a firm grip. The heat of him throbbed in your hand and Silco’s natural eye went heavy-lidded. He leaned forward to press another kiss to your lips, pulling away just far enough to whisper, “Missed you, pet.”
It reminded you so strongly of the vivid dreams you had experienced that you nipped his lip to see if he would react like a real person. If you were dreaming again, you would be incredibly disappointed…
Silco pulled back with a garbled curse before plundering your mouth, delivering a wicked pinch to your hip at the same time. He took full advantage of your gasp to deepen the kiss even further.
Without any clear thought or plan, you tightened your legs around his narrow hips and rolled, forcing him to the mattress while you straddled him from above. Your hands moved back down to his cock, teasing the head of it against the throbbing point of your clit.
Silco bared his chipped teeth up at you. “You’re killing me, lovely.”
“Can’t- mmmm… Can’t help it,” you babbled. “Feel so good…”
You bucked mindlessly on top of him until both of you were thoroughly slicked up and aching, but you couldn’t tear yourself away from the sensation long enough to line yourself up with him.
That horrible, shining thread of tension broke for both of you at the same moment. Silco’s eyes narrowed and his fingers dug into your hips, lifting just as you planted your feet to do the same.
Despite your best joint efforts, you weren’t properly aligned and the two of you slid against each other awkwardly. Silco growled while you let out what could only be termed a whine, but the frustration seemed to sharpen your concentration. The second time you tried to impale yourself on him, your breath caught at the feeling of his head notched against your entrance.
Then you were lowering yourself and Silco was thrusting upward and he slid home with a teeth-rattling slam. If there was anyone else in The Last Drop, they would have heard your cry. It bounced off the high ceiling, echoing back to you in a cacophony of ecstasy that only drove you and Silco higher.
If you had thought grinding against Silco felt wonderful, it was nothing compared to the tremendous depth of pleasure you felt at having him so deeply inside of you. All you could do was lift and lower, fucking yourself on him as Silco’s hands took some of your weight and tried to speed your movements.
The slap of flesh meeting flesh was loud in the room, almost drowning out the shaking breaths that you and Silco were panting. His thumb found your clit, drawing a quick circle before he pressed down against the sensitive nerve cluster. It made you tighten desperately around him and Silco swore vividly.
Of course, that didn’t stop him from repeating the torment.
“I’m going- going to-” Your voice was far beyond breathy. It was almost reedy with the effort it was taking to stave off your impending orgasm.
Silco groaned, loud and hoarse. “Been dreaming about the way you feel when you come around my cock. Come for me, darling. Show me everything I’ve been missing.”
As if he had some sort of direct line into your nerves, the muscles of your core started to flutter and spasm, constricting around him like you were going to collapse in on yourself.
That was more true than you realized. If there was ever a person in your life who felt like a black hole, it was Silco. Mysterious and fascinating and utterly unknowable. It was a strange series of thoughts to have during an orgasm, but your mind was locked into it by that point. Silco was such an outsized presence in your life, and to think that he loved you… well, it was almost beyond what your mind could comprehend.
Then your mind went fuzzy and you didn’t have to worry about comprehending anything anymore. All that was left was pleasure and heat and the feeling of Silco fucking upward into you with every bit of force he could muster. He buried himself deep as he came, spreading more heat through your core and dripping out to smear between you.
When your shaking thighs refused to hold you up any longer, you collapsed forward and onto his chest. Silco held you there, arms tight around you as you both caught your breath, then rolled you gently to one side so he could curl himself against your back.
“I cannot believe you exist,” he murmured, tracing a tickling line over your temple. “And the idea that you love me… it is impossible.”
You smiled despite yourself. “I feel the same way about you loving me.”
He kissed your fingertips, humming softly as he folded your hand into his.
Eventually, the flood of hormones receded enough for you to think clearly. “Silco? What does this-? Do we-? What, exactly, does this change?”
Silco chuckled softly, and you felt the warmth of it against the nape of your neck. “As much or little as you’d like, pet. The Haven will be under my protection, but I can be as subtle about it as you’d like. And there will be no Shimmer in the neighborhood.”
You thought that over for a while. The idea of Silco having a hand in the Haven again made you a little uncomfortable, but more for appearance’s sake than any real concern. And the majority of people had already proven that their morals were performative - you were horrible and the Haven was worthless… until they needed something.
In the end, you relaxed against Silco. “This city isn’t going to know what hit it.”
Silco laughed - a genuine, happy sound totally unlike the sardonic smirks you usually saw from him. “Too true, my little philanthropist. You and I united will be a force unlike anything they’ve ever seen.”
“I have a few ideas on where to start,” you confided, eyelids drooping with weariness.
“I do, as well,” Silco agreed. “In fact, I’ve already begun the preparations for our final push for freedom.”
You hummed, nearly asleep already. Silco pressed a kiss to the curve of your shoulder and you stirred yourself back to wakefulness. “Hmm? You have a final push worked out?”
“Of course.” Silco sounded affectionately amused, as if it was adorable that you thought he would do anything without planning it fully. “I’ve hired a scientist to work out the details. He tells me the final product will take a few years to develop, but we have the time. We can continue our improvements to Zaun until then.”
You were fully awake by that point, frowning blankly at the far wall. “Wait…” With some effort, you wiggled around until you were facing Silco directly. “You’ve hired someone to work on… what? What is this product? Sounds like you already have some things set in stone.”
“Not quite, darling,” Silco assured you. “Just putting some pieces in place. I’ll still need to work out the final plan. In fact, I would welcome your help with that.”
“Okay, but say I want some of the details now,” you pushed. “What product are you having developed?”
He sighed, rolling back on the pillow to stare up at the ceiling. “Very well, since you are so interested… It is a compound, similar to Shimmer in some ways, but not addictive. Not in the slightest.”
Your hum was distinctly skeptical. “But what does it do?”
“It mimics the increased adrenaline and reduced pain reception of the user,” Silco explained. “The adrenaline allows the user to push their body past many natural limits. They will accomplish incredible things.”
You tensed, fighting the urge to sit upright. “So it turns people into super soldiers. But what about after the effects have subsided? Are there negative health impacts? And even if it isn’t chemically addictive, people can become obsessed with feeling like they have that kind of power.”
“It isn’t addictive because the user rarely survives,” Silco said, finally looking at you once more. You flinched, and he cupped your cheek. “This is precisely why I wished to spare you the details. You have a the ideals of a dreamer, despite your willingness to fight for a good cause.”
“You’re planning to have people take a drug that will probably kill them.” You shook your head slowly. “What cause could be worth that? Scaring Piltover?”
“No, I have no use for frightening them,” Silco said, grimacing. “They are fearful enough already. My soldiers would be dispensed to fight off guards, infiltrate the city, and clear the way to the Piltover Council.”
“And-” Your pulse was thundering so hard that your voice shook with it. “And when you get to the Council?”
“I kill them all, of course.”
You gaped at that, horrified by the casual ease of his answer. Silco seemed oblivious to your feelings, kissing and nipping along the sensitive skin of your throat.
“Silco, you can’t do that,” you said, gently pushing him away.
He blinked at you, the beginnings of irritation growing on his face. “And why, precisely, can I not?”
“Because you can’t take Piltover by force!”
“No, I cannot,” Silco agreed, a sly smile growing on his face. “Not yet, at least. But the initial trials are more than promising.”
“This isn’t an option,” you argued. “You’ll do even more harm if you come in by attacking the Council and using drugged soldiers as your muscle.”
A muscle ticced in Silco’s jaw, and you changed your tone to a logical one instead. “Think of it this way: if you take the city by force, you’ll hold it for a while. You’re clever and you have the ability to draw followers. But if you present yourself as a powerful enemy, the people will combine forces to fight against you. They will always see you as an invader to repel. You’ll never manage to quell the resistance to Zaun.”
“Have you already forgotten that I’ll have an army powered by one of the most potent substances ever developed in this city?” Silco asked archly.
“You’ll have a single-use army,” you countered. “And as more and more of them sacrifice themselves for this war, you’ll have fewer and fewer supporters willing to fight for you.”
“Then I’ll make it so they have no choice but to fight for me,” Silco bit out.
You furrowed your brows, studying him more intensely than you had since you first met. There was nothing but resolve in his expression, and you knew without further questioning that you wouldn’t change his mind. He was going to destroy Piltover - and, in doing so, he would destroy any hope for the nation of Zaun.
With a sigh, you tossed back the covers he had tucked over you and made to rise from the bed.
Silco caught at your wrist, pinning it to the mattress. “Where are you going?”
“I’m not going to convince you to change your plan, and you’re not going to convince me that it’s a good idea.” You smiled sadly at him. “It seems we’ve finally found something we cannot agree on.”
You tugged a little harder at your wrist, but Silco held firm. “But you love me and I love you. You’ve admitted as much.”
“I do love you,” you agreed. “But that doesn’t mean I can support you in this. Whatever concessions you were going to make for the Haven, consider them either paid for or unaccepted. I think it would be best if we don’t meet up again.”
The cool slither against your skin was followed by two distinct clicks. You turned slowly, both knowing and dreading what you would see when you did: Silco had handcuffed you to one of the rings embedded in his headboard.
“Silco, take this off of me.” You managed to keep your voice even despite the panic rising in your chest.
“No.”
You couldn’t help but pull against the metal encircling your wrist. It did nothing but make you feel more trapped. “Silco!”
“No,” he snapped again, voice harsh enough to make you stop struggling momentarily. “I lost you once. I don't intend to be so careless as to allow it to happen a second time.”
“Silco,” you pleaded, striving for a less confrontational tone. “This is insane. I can't just stay locked in your room.”
“We love each other,” he reminded you, buttoning his pants. “Everything else will work out in time.”
And then he left, slipping shirtless into his office. You tugged fruitlessly at the handcuffs and tried to keep your breathing steady.

Author's Note - They were SO CLOSE to a happy ending. But Silco will always be Silco and our dear reader just can't handle some of his more pragmatic plots.
We're in the final stretch now, friends! Only a few more chapters until the end of this story.
Thank you for reading! If I can ask a favor, I haven't had the chance to watch any of Arcane Season Two yet, so if you choose to review (thank you!), please try to avoid including any spoilers. I can tell from my tumblr notifications on this story that Silco must be in S2, but I'm trying not to know how much or in what capacity. I'll try to be caught up by the time I post the next chapter.
I'll see you soon!

You may wonder what this whole Awesome Coffee Club thing is all about. Today I was reminded what it’s all about:
In 2019, the unpaid intern who runs this tumblr account visited Sierra Leone’s Kono District. Kono is the among the most impoverished communities in the world due to a long history of enslavement, colonialism, and civil war. A decade ago, Kono’s healthcare system was in a state of collapse--clinics had no running water or electricity or paid staff, and inconsistent supplies of medications and other necessities.
As a result, Kono was the epicenter of the global maternal mortality crisis: One out of every seventeen women could expect to die in childbirth. Over 10% of children died before the age of five.
Beginning in 2014, Partners in Health began working with Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health to bring change. This started with the basics at the region’s hospital, Koidu Government Hospital: running water, 24-hour electricity, and hiring nurses, community healthworkers, cooks, facilities management staff, and so much more.
At the time, KGH’s maternity ward had a dirt floor. Many people were dying for want of an emergency C-section or a blood transfusion. By 2019, this was getting better--two functioning operating rooms were able to perform C-sections, and a blood bank could address postpartum hemorrhaging. But it was still inadequate, and maternal and child mortality were horrifyingly routine.
To address the crisis, PIH Sierra Leone directors Jon Lascher and Dr. Baillor Barrie wanted to build a world-class maternal and child health center that could save thousands of lives yearly while also serving as a teaching hospital to train the next generation of Sierra Leonean healthcare workers. They told us they needed $25,000,000 to break ground, and would probably eventually need another $25,000,000 to support the hospital’s operation over its first few years.
I am, as unpaid interns go, doing quite well, but not THAT well. So our family committed what we could and asked others to join us, and within two years, we passed that $25,000,000 goal. Together, we’ve now raised close to $40,000,000.
Today, I visited the site of the Maternal Center of Excellence, the first wards of which will hopefully open next year. Nearly all of the construction team are from Kono, and 65% of them are women--they work as welders, engineers, planners, laborers, and so much more. You see three of them above. I had the privilege of talking with them about this project. The young woman to the right, Success, told me that her dream is to work for the hospital her whole life, helping to maintain and support it. One of the other women told me, “We are passionate about this work because it is the future of our country. And we know that we and our friends will someday give birth here.” I am so proud that our projects support their training and livelihood, and so grateful to have them as colleagues in this work.
The hospital--which will include over 100 maternal beds, a NICU, and enough operating suites to perform over 10 emergency C-sections per day, will also require ongoing funding for staff, stuff, systems, maintenance, and more. Our hope is that open-ended projects like the Awesome Coffee Club and Awesome Socks Club can help provide that funding, although the most efficient way to support this project is to donate directly!
So that’s why this tumblr, and the awesome coffee club, exists. World-class maternal and infant healthcare is coming to Kono, a wonderful and too long impoverished by colonialism and extractive capitalism. It is only a first step. There is so long to go. But what a first step.

Has the Brooklyn Bridge ever undergone significant renovations?
The Brooklyn Bridge, an iconic symbol of New York City, stands as a testament to engineering brilliance and architectural marvel. Since its completion in 1883, the bridge has played a crucial role in connecting the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, witnessing the evolution of the cityscape over the decades. In its long and storied history, the Brooklyn Bridge has indeed undergone significant renovations to ensure its structural integrity and adapt to the changing needs of a bustling metropolis.
Initial Construction:
Designed by renowned engineer John A. Roebling and completed by his son Washington Roebling, the Brooklyn Bridge was a groundbreaking feat of engineering in its time. However, even with its sturdy construction, the bridge needed to adapt to the increasing demands of a rapidly growing city.
Early Renovations:
In the early 20th century, several renovations were undertaken to enhance the bridge's stability and accommodate the ever-increasing vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The original wooden walkway was replaced with a more durable concrete surface, and the bridge's cables and support structures were reinforced to meet modern safety standards.
Mid-20th Century Upgrades:
As the mid-20th century dawned, the Brooklyn Bridge faced another wave of renovations. The emergence of automobiles as a dominant mode of transportation prompted the need for wider lanes and reinforced roadways. The bridge's signature Gothic towers underwent meticulous restoration to preserve their historic charm while ensuring they could withstand the test of time.
1980s Rehabilitation:
In the 1980s, the Brooklyn Bridge underwent a comprehensive rehabilitation project to address the effects of wear and tear from decades of heavy use and exposure to the elements. The project included the replacement of deteriorating stones, repainting of the bridge's steel components, and the installation of modern lighting to enhance visibility and safety.
Post-9/11 Precautions:
In the aftermath of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the Brooklyn Bridge, like many other landmarks, became a focus of heightened security measures. The city implemented additional safety features, including surveillance systems and increased police presence, to safeguard this critical piece of infrastructure.
Contemporary Maintenance:
Even in the 21st century, ongoing maintenance is crucial to preserving the Brooklyn Bridge for future generations. Regular inspections, repairs, and technological upgrades ensure that the bridge continues to serve as a vital transportation link while retaining its iconic status.
Conclusion:
The Brooklyn Bridge stands not only as a physical link between boroughs but also as a symbol of resilience and adaptability. Over the years, the bridge has undergone significant renovations to keep pace with the evolving needs of a dynamic city. From its initial construction in the 19th century to the comprehensive rehabilitation efforts of the 1980s and the ongoing maintenance in the present day, the Brooklyn Bridge remains a testament to the commitment of New Yorkers to preserve their heritage and ensure the safety of this architectural masterpiece.

Need Some Help (Edited 4/21/2024)
Hey guys, it's been a while huh? I really didn't want to do this but right now I have no choice. My grandmother needs some supplies right now and normally, her kids would've been able to send some budget for it but well... There's been some issues with them on their side so they can't send the budget.
I would've been willing to pay for her as I always did in the past when the budget they sent wasn't enough but right now I made a pretty big purchase for an upgrade to equipment that I need for work so I'm running low on funds too.
Any amount would really, REALLY help.
I'm linking my ko-fi on here since that would be the easiest way to help me. I'll also put under readmore screenshots of the items that my grandmother needs. It's not all of it but they're what's really important to her daily life.
Edit:
Hey gamers this is still ongoing as of today 4/21/2023. Any bit of help really really helps. Her kids are still having some issues as of now and since I'm the one left behind to like. Assist her, I've been trying my best to make up for some of her purchases as best as I could. We need some budget for her maintenance medicines since that's what's really keeping her good in her very old age (she's 96 years old going on 97 next month). We had to buy her another set of diapers because she kept ripping up the ones we got her at the start of the month (those were about 20 packs and she really ripped into them because of... Well, boredom).
Current:
$60/700

"Research into trans medicine has been manipulated"
The Sources
A recent Economist* article has described how the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) has manipulated research into trans medicine. The article is reproduced here in full by the Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine (SEGM). The SEGM also discusses the topic in their discussion on how "WPATH Influence Undermines WHO’s Transgender Guidelines"
*For those who care: The Economist is rated as "least biased" and "highly factual" by Media Bias/Fact Check. While it has varied over time, they currently tend to be preferred by a left-leaning audience.
The Situation
Essentially, unsealed court documents have shown WPATH first commissioned research into trans medicine from Johns Hopkins University (for the "development" of their guidelines) and then prevented the researchers from publishing this research. (Among other ethical violations including undue influence over manuscript contents and requiring researchers to (illegitimately) claim independence from WPATH.)
Presumably their suppression and manipulation of the research occurred because the conclusions reached by the researchers did not meet advance their desired opinions.
This is extraordinarily unethical from a scientific, medical, and political perspective. Strong objections from the researchers involved were documented, but ultimately failed to prevent the limitation of academic freedom and maintenance of scientific integrity. Aside from this, their actions have deprived their own community (trans individuals) from potentially vital information about their medical treatments.
So, the next time someone asks for "proof" that the current standards of trans medicine are not evidence based and may, in fact, be harmful: reply with these sources documenting the unscientific, unethical suppression of such proof. (And, while you're at it, remind them that the burden of proof is on intervention, not the lack of intervention.)
Choice Quotes from the Sources
From the reproduced Economist article:
From early on in the contract negotiations, WPATH expressed a desire to control the results of the Hopkins team’s work.
Ms Robinson [the research director] saw this as an attempt to exert undue influence over what was supposed to be an independent process.
But an email in October 2020 from WPATH figures, including its incoming president at the time, ... made clear what sort of science WPATH did (and did not) want published. Research must be “thoroughly scrutinised and reviewed to ensure that publication does not negatively affect the provision of transgender health care in the broadest sense,” it stated.
[The WPATH president has] been named to a World Health Organisation advisory board tasked with developing best practices for transgender medicine
Another document recently unsealed shows that Rachel Levine, a trans woman who is assistant secretary for health, succeeded in pressing wpath to remove minimum ages for the treatment of children from its 2022 standards of care.
From the extended discussion by the SEGM:
The court documents reveal that WPATH leadership was "caught on the wrong foot" when two systematic reviews of evidence regarding endocrine interventions, ... did not provide the kind of support that WPATH was hoping to see. Consequently, WPATH leadership, ... took action to prevent the evidence evaluation team from making public the offending systematic reviews.
The court documents also reveal that WPATH subsequently instituted a new approval policy to ensure that only favorable evidence reviews could be published by researchers engaged in evaluating the evidence: (... WPATH had to approve the conclusions. ... WPATH had ongoing content control over the content of the planned publication. ... WPATH had the final document control.)
The authors were also required to insert into the article a statement that asserted its independence from WPATH, effectively denying that WPATH interference had taken place. [Imagine a drug company exerting this much influence over research into their a drug, and then demanding the researchers lie about this influence.]
[The Baker 2012 review] was the only review to survive WPATH’s approval process, despite "dozens" of reviews being completed by the Johns Hopkins team, as the court documents reveal. [Meaning dozens were suppressed, presumably for unfavorable conclusions.]
The Baker review has an alarming number of irregularities, which bear the marks of WPATH interference, and which deserve a separate spotlight. Here, we will only note that the review's conclusions ... are explicitly contradicted by the actual systematic review findings, which found only "low" and "insufficient" evidence.
The suppressed evidence regarding hormones interventions for all age groups raises questions about what basis WHO is using for its presumption that hormones should be widely available to all adults who seek them [This is of particular concern since several influential members of WPATH - including its president - have been appointed to the WHO board developing clinical guidelines]

From the initial concept to the final launch, this service provides an array of offerings, including website service, responsive web design, and custom design services. Whether you’re a startup seeking to establish your brand or an established enterprise aiming to enhance your online presence, understanding the elements of full service web design is essential.
Full service web design
Full service web design encompasses all aspects of creating a website, from initial conceptualization to ongoing maintenance. This approach ensures that every detail is carefully considered to meet the specific needs of a business or individual. With a team of experienced designers and developers, full service web design offers a seamless experience that integrates aesthetics, functionality, and user experience.
One of the key advantages of opting for a full service web design is the cohesion of the website elements. Since all parts of the project are managed by a single team, there is less chance for miscommunication or inconsistency in design. This results in a more polished final product that reflects the brand’s identity while providing an engaging experience for visitors.
Additionally, full service web design allows for customized solutions tailored to unique requirements. Whether you need an e-commerce platform, a portfolio site, or a blog, a full service provider will offer dedicated support and expert advice throughout the entire process, ensuring your vision comes to life exactly as you imagined.
Website service
In today's digital landscape, website service is essential for businesses to thrive and maintain an online presence. A well-structured website serves as a powerful tool that encourages customer engagement and drives sales. By investing in a comprehensive website service, businesses can ensure that their website not only looks great but also functions seamlessly across all devices.
A key aspect of website service is the ability to optimize for search engines. By implementing SEO best practices, businesses can enhance their visibility and attract more organic traffic. This is where a reliable website service provider plays a crucial role, as they possess the expertise and techniques necessary to elevate your search engine rankings.
Furthermore, ongoing support and maintenance are vital components of a reliable website service. As technology evolves and user needs change, having a team that can promptly address issues or updates will keep your website relevant and effective in reaching target audiences. This ongoing relationship is instrumental in achieving long-term success in the digital realm.
Responsive web design
Responsive web design is an essential aspect of modern web development that ensures a seamless user experience across a variety of devices. With the increasing use of smartphones and tablets, having a website that adapts to different screen sizes is not just a luxury but a necessity.
The core principle of responsive web design is fluidity. This means that the layout of your website adjusts dynamically based on the screen width, ensuring that content remains accessible and visually appealing regardless of the device used. This approach improves usability and can significantly boost conversion rates.
Incorporating responsive web design techniques involves using flexible grids, images, and CSS media queries. These elements work together to create a layout that responds gracefully to changes in screen size, making your website not only functional but also competitive in the digital marketplace.
Custom design services
In today's digital landscape, custom design services have emerged as a vital component of creating a strong online presence. Businesses understand that a one-size-fits-all approach does not cater to their unique needs and branding. Therefore, opting for custom design services allows them to differentiate themselves in a crowded market.
These services offer tailored solutions that resonate with a company's specifics, from colors to typography and layout. By leveraging custom design services, businesses can ensure that their websites not only reflect their brand identity but also provide an intuitive user experience. This is crucial for keeping visitors engaged and encouraging them to take the desired actions.
Investing in custom design services ultimately contributes to better customer satisfaction and improved conversion rates. With a website designed specifically for their target audience, businesses can more effectively communicate their message and achieve their goals. This bespoke approach is invaluable in today's competitive environment.

Masterlist
Before to start... thank you for your support and likes, and please remember English is not my first language, so be kind!
Thanks @vase-of-lilies for the banner
The following day, you start your shift at 6 A.M. It's freezing. People come in with gloves, hats, thick scarves and snow boots.
"It's going to be a tough shift." says Helen, one of your few close friends "I lit the fire, but it seems to be a wiring problem." she adds with a snort, while you turn on the various equipments, detach the arm of the coffee machine, and you start cleaning and maintenance everything.
"Don't worry. Surely things will improve in a while," you say in a vain attempt to think positive and think that everything can't ever be all bad.
"A large coffee." says one of the first customers. You quickly prepare everything and serve it.
"A cappuccino." says someone else.
"A coffee with vodka." you're practically spinning like a top.
It's almost 7 A. M. and you find yourself yawning, tired. Maybe due to your hard shift and the night spent thinking about those sweet dark eyes and that face that somehow bewitched you.
"Didn' sleep?" asks a voice while you're yawning that forces you to cover your mouth and eye-popping.
It's Joel.
A gnns-like response comes out of your mouth that makes him smile.
"What are you doing here?" you ask him. It's an obvious question considering you are in a coffee shop.
"I'd like a coffee." he replies shrugging his shoulders.
Only then, you look at him more carefully, his dark curly hair messed up as if he just run his hand through his hair, he is wearing a dark jacket and dark pants.
"Comin' right up." you say running behind the counter, your hands trembling.
"So, you work here?" he asks sitting on a stool on the other side of the counter.
"Yes." you reply, looking at the coffee grinder into which you drop the mixture.
You feel his eyes follow you every step of the way, and you feel uncomfortable for the first time. It's something practically every customer does, but if it's Joel, well it's different. It's not the first time he does, he did it yesterday in class too, but it's different here in your workplace. It's as if he's entered a personal sphere of you, and allowing him to look inside makes you feel like violated.
You shake your head, it's just a job and he's just a customer you're making coffee, nothing more.
Helen looks first at you and then at him, then back at you with a complicit and amused look and serves breakfast to another customer.
"Nice place." he says looking around "Are croissants fresh?" he asks you.
"Given the temperature they'll be frozen!" you exclaim smiling looking in his direction and making him chuckle.
"Good one!" he agrees "Actually, it's freezing here." he adds looking around.
"The heating system isn't working properly today!" interjects Helen.
Joel looks at her with raised eyebrows, then his eyes wander over her and you "Just today or even past few days?" he asks as he gets up from his stool.
"It's … at least three days," you say shrugging your shoulders.
"And you work here in a freezer!" he bursts out shaking his head "When you call someone to fix it?! You'll catch a pneumonia, girls," he adds.
"It's okay, we're not kids," you reply using an offended tone.
"Where's the boiler? I'll take a look." says Joel looking around.
"Don't worry, you don't have to." you say, at the same time Helen says, "Over there, behin' the door."
Joel thanks her and walks away, you shoot your friend a disapproving look "What?" she asks.
"Why did you tell him to do that?"
"Is there anything you want to tell me?" she asks you, crossing her arms and raising an eyebrow. You hate when she assumes that pose.
"He's my music teacher, okay?" you tell her looking to the door where Joel walked in.
"He looks like someone who knows what's up," she says.
You nod, pursing your lips.
"And he's very handsome too," she adds.
"Stop it!" you claim, widening your eyes.
"Are you jealous?" she asks giving you a little nudge.
"What? No. He's not my type." you reply, although you realize you can't tell or be absolutely certain.
"That's everyone's type." she winks at you, "If I introduced him to Gina, she would probably give him a blowjob by now."
"Ssshhh!" you shut her "Not now and not here. It bothers me when you talk openly about these things!"
Helen laughs winking at you "Go and see if your non-type needs help or a hand."
You glare at her before stepping out from behind the counter and going to see.
"May I come in?" you say softly, opening the door; Joel is right back there. His gaze is so absorbed that he gives you an almost stern look, but then in a few seconds he gives you a gentle and sweet look "How's it going? Can you figure it out?"
He gives you a little smile and replies, "This is a small part of my job. You know, among other things, I like to carve wood and make small sculptures. I think you watched 'em." you nod, remembering about those small wood carvings reproducing animals.
"Is there anything you're not good at?" you ask smiling at him and making him smile.
"There are many things I can't do."
"Give me an example."
"The way you prepared coffee, the best I can do is to put in a waffle."
You smile, shaking your head, "It's very simple instead. You'd learn immediately with a little practice."
He smiles again to turn his attention back to the boiler, you see him intent on tightening the bolts with a tool that you never seen the point or its specific name. You watch his big hands and feel a strange sensation to think about how they can be so gentle playing a guitar and so strong fixing a boiler.
"That's it! Everything should work now, go turn it on." you do it immediately "Good and now let's have breakfast!" he exclaims "Ah, wait a minute where is the bathroom? I need to wash my hands." he says.
You point to a door on the left so he can use the bathroom.
You, meanwhile, return behind the counter; two more customers have arrived who fortunately want a coffee only and leave.
After a while, Joel returns with a huge smile and sits on the same stool as before.
"Before you mentioned about the croissants," he says, "What's today's flavor?"
"Cream croissant, croissant with apricot, cherry cornetti, chocolate croissant, simple croissant. If I may suggest, I recommend a honey cornetto, it's heavenly." you say with a smile.
He smiles looking in your eyes, "Have you tried it? From the look on your face I'd say so."
You get close placing your forearms on the counter so you can be very close to him "Well, I can tell you, I stole it once and that was my lunch. It was the best thing about that day."
Only then, you realize you got too close, swallowing hard, you're mesmerized by those melted chocolate eyes.
"All right. Let's go with Honey cornetto." he says without breaking eye contact with you "Two."
You smile back at him, returning his gaze and moving away from him to take the croissants "You eat 'em now?"
"No, thank you. Could ya put 'em in a bag?" he asks you.
You just nod with a little smile.
"When are you going to dip his fingers in your honey jar?" Helen asks you in an ear making your eyes roll.
"Helen!" you exclaim, pushing her.
"Thank God he was boring! I'd like someone like him would teach me something every day," she says glancing at Joel.
"Helen, stop it! And then lower your voice, don't make a bad impression!" you exclaim in shock.
"I'm making these appreciations, not you!" she retorts with a complicit smile "Besides, judging by the way you've approached and the way he's staring at you dumbfounded…my guess is there's something going on!"
"Stop it!" you exclaim, turning away from her and approaching Joel.
"Tonight you tell us everything," she adds as a threat.
You look back at her and slip out something like I kill you, she smiles naively and goes back to work.
When you look at Joel, you realize he is watching you with curiosity "Are you okay? Did your friend say too much?"
Gotcha.
"Yes." you immediately try to change the topic giving him the croissants "She's like that, so what - what are we going to do later?" you ask him.
"What did she tell you that was so special to make you blush like that?" he persists.
"Um, no, nothing. You'd laugh, maybe," you answer evasively.
"About you? I don't think so." he says without looking away from you and grabbing the bag you are handing him "Go ahead!"
You widen your eyes "Um…" if it's possible you blush even more "no, it's nothing. Um, I was just falling before with some coffee and croissants, that's all." you say without sharing a look.
You're absolutely sure he didn't believe your answer, but he decides not to ask more questions.
So much better!
When you leave the bar at the end of your shift, you find Joel's SUV outside. He honks his horn and you pull up, open the door, and immediately you are greeted by the hot air conditioning in the cabin and that warm smile that has been accompanying your days recently.
"Hi." you say as you relax into the seat.
"Hi." he says and then pulls off his gloves and leans toward you and, in a gesture that surprises you greatly, takes your hands in his. His hands are so big that yours feel like a child's by comparison. His are so warm, so….
You almost feel like you're coming short of that feeling, that warmth, and not just physical; something warms inside you. Something unfamiliar that makes your heart flutter once again.
"Good thing, I can feel you've been warm," he comments, smiling at you and making you smile.
"Yes, well a guy came today. He wanted to have breakfast, but then he had the goodness to fix the boiler!" you exclaim jokingly about the episode.
"Oh yeah?" he asks you "Do I know him?" he adds mockingly, turning away from you.
"Um, I think so, you know," you say "He's a good man, confident, witty, smart."
"He seems like a clever guy." he remarks, releasing the hand brake and putting on the right-hand blinker.
"Yes. Although he does everything to seem obnoxious," you tease him.
"So, I must know him, we'll get along fine!" he exclaims, smiling and turning his gaze toward you.
See him so relaxed and happy warms your heart.
You share a serene and happy look, a look that makes your stomach clench in a so new and so unique feeling.
"Besides, if he goes to that place, he definitely drinks the best coffee in town!" he exclaims, making you blush.
"It's due to the mixture, it's not me," you whisper, lowering your gaze.
He calls your name and you look up meeting his eyes "Never look down. You're a good kid, you're sweet, you're polite, you lack nothing to be less than others." he reminds you making you feel special for a moment, you who have always been like a fish out of water, out of place, partly because of your manly nature and partly because of how your mother treats you. You always thought that no one appreciates you beyond your dullness.
You smile at him, "Thank you."
He smiles "And then I like your sweetness mixed with the will to fight all the time." he says reaching out a hand to your face and caressing your cheek with the back of his hand in a very sweet gesture.
"You're perfect just the way you're." he tells you, making you widen your eyes in wonder. You are almost shocked by his words.
"I don't… I don't know what to say."
And it's true, you don't know what to say. What do you say when someone - someone like him - tells you that you're perfect just the way you are?
He smiles at you, "Don't say anything."
You don't really know why your eyes rest on his lips, they're so perfect, they're -- you've never wanted a kiss like in that moment. You've already kissed or, rather, been kissed a couple of times at school, but the feeling wasn't as good or romantic as you would have liked or hoped, and most of all maybe the two boys weren't people you'd want to kiss as much as you'd want to kiss Joel Miller right now.
A horn honks not so far from you breaking that flow of thoughts and bringing Jack back to your mind.
You'd like to know Jack, you feel there may be a connection with him, but at the same time you want to know Joel and you enjoy his company.
You remain almost silent on the road to his house, or at least you think you are going there, you just give each other long silent glances.
You don't know how it's possible, but between the you of you it's growing a singular and curious relationship in such a short time, it's so natural, so willing. You feel as if you're crossed by unexpected and unfamiliar shocks that shake and shock you at the same time. Joel is this shock, his warm dark eyes, his hypnotic gaze, his smile or even just that little grin that ripples one corner of his mouth creating those extremely sexy wrinkles.
You never thought you'd look at wrinkles as something sexy in a man. But as you've had occasion to think several times these days, Joel is an exception.
"Can I ask you something?" he says breaking the silence.
"Sure." you answer, looking at him.
"Why did you treat me that way when we first met?"
You remember the feeling you got at first sight, a fine - looking man, dark eyes, grim look at first and then curious, hands on hips, but most of all the way he talked to you, sharply and most of all he hurt your feelings.
"Hear those words like get back to your bubble or hurry back to Mommy … they … kind of shook me up, that is. No one had ever spoken to me like that, no one had hurt me like that in that tone," you answer him.
"And did I?" he asks you.
"Yes." you decide to be honest. It hurt you. "That's why I used that tone with you." you see him nod "Do you still think I'm a little thing that just shuts up and keeps quiet?"
He looks at you with a half-smile "'m I wrong or I called you pretty little thing, ain't I?"
You look away and observe the landscape outside, realizing you left the town "Where are we going?"
"Into the woods." he replies, you look at him with curiosity "I'm still the big bad wolf." he adds laughing and making you shake your head with a half-smile.
Maybe you shouldn't trust him. Your mother always told you not to trust strangers, never to accept anything from them, never to get in the car with any of them.
With Joel it's different, too. A bad person wouldn't fixed the boiler, wouldn't waited for your mother to pick you up, wouldn't said those nice words to you like he did.
You don't know much about it, but you know you can trust him.
"Scared?" he asks, looking at you briefly and then looking back toward the road.
You shake your head "No, curious."
He smiles, you are sure he is smiling. You, on the other hand, observe the road covered - and getting covered - with snow.
It's true. With him, you are not afraid.
You are agitated, yes, but it is an agitation different from fear and worry. It is something new that you have never experienced, but that you intend to discover, and you can only do so if you are next to him.
"Aren't you afraid to drive in this weather?" you ask him sincerely curious.
"I've driven in hail, with sheets of ice on the road, no one has ever stopped me," he answers you with the wink of someone who knows better.
You swallow.
Why do you get the feeling he's not just talking about the weather?
You breathe deeply.
"I need to give you a few more lessons, I guess." he says causing you to turn suddenly in his direction "I was talking about driving lessons." he clarifies probably noticing your shocked look.
You swallow again.
You feel like an idiot.
Now he'll have bad thoughts about you, he'll start to think you're just a stupid, inexperienced, useless little girl.
"Okay." you just say.
"Don't." he says pressing very slightly on the brake pedal.
"What?"
"Don't think badly of you." he replies in an obvious tone as if he can reads your mind even though you didn't expose your thoughts "You'll learn. Everyone does. Why shouldn't ya?"
He told you a lot of things since you met, all beautiful things that warm your heart and soul. How strange life is! Until a few days ago you believed your whole life would always unfold with a precise, regular cadence and that nothing would ever interrupt that predetermined flow. Then, Joel arrived and with him so many words, so many special situations, so many looks you never received before.
You're sure, he's just nice, maybe he's like that with everyone. After all, you don't know anything about him!
The car stops.
You are in front of a very small cabin in the woods with a sloping roof and a chimney. You get out with a giant smile forgetting about ice and indeed, as soon as you put your feet outside of the car you slip sideways.
"Are you hurt?" asks Joel coming toward you putting your hands and helping you up.
You don't know if your knee hurts more or your already weak ego.
"No." you reply, but a grimace appears on your face immediately unveiling you.
"Doesn't look like that to me." he says looking at your legs "Stop here, 'm going to open it." he says moving away.
"I'm good, don't worry," you tell him, but after a half step, your face winces into another grimace of pain.
You hear him open the door then he turns around "You're such a stubborn little thing!" he exclaims.
He makes to duck, but you block him by placing your hands on his forearms "What are you doing?"
"I'm taking you inside." he replies and without adding anything else, he lifts you up in his arms and with great strides you go inside. His grip is firm, holding you by the shoulders and popliteal cord. Your heart speeds up.
It lays you on what you feel is a chair. You see nothing, everything is dark. You see only the light coming through the door. You hear him open the windows and the light invades the interior, which, judging by the smell, had not been opened in several years. All the furniture and armchairs are covered with more or less large sheets, there is even one on the floor not far from you, and you sense that the chair on which you now stand was also covered. You see him walk over to the door and close it.
"I'm sorry for the mess, but…" you see him looking around and see him intent on removing the sheets, you notice small knick-knacks and also some pictures "it's been a long time since I've been here." he approaches you "How do ya feel?" he kneels before you laying a hand on your knee.
"Well, it hurts a little," you answer him with a small grimace on your face "I'm sorry."
"Don't even joke!" he says gently taking your chin between thumb and forefinger with his other hand "It happens." he adds and then lets your chin out of his grip "You helped me come here and…" he looks around swallowing "well, thank you."
You look at him quizzically "I didn't do anything. You drove all the way here, you brought me here. I…didn't…"
He whispers and looks you in the eyes "Okay, maybe I need to explain… this was my parents' house and for a while I lived with…" he lowers his gaze taking a deep breath "since it happened, I haven't… I never came back here and I moved to the town." you nod as if you understood, actually you didn't understand much. Something bothers him, and you think it probably has something to do with the little girl in the picture or the woman who broke his heart. You don't tell him, however, that you know about who you think is his daughter, he might get furious and maybe throw you out of that cabin and with your knee in that condition you'd have trouble walking.
"What's bothering you?" you ask him, looking into his eyes.
He looks down, he's about to say something, but then he thinks better of it, you see him swallow and tighten his grip slightly on your knee. It doesn't hurt, but it makes you feel odd, an unfamiliar tingling.
"Time." he replies, "Have you ever had that, in spite of everything, time is running ahead of you and all you can do is go on, in spite of everything? Even if your heart and soul are broken, time, things go on anyway." he says taking a sad expression "I don't think I can accept it."
You let him talk by listening to him and trying to tell him what you can tell, you don't know what exactly happened and you don't want to upset him even more.
"If you want to talk, I'm listening," you tell him, stroking his hair in a spontaneous gesture. He looks at you and you stay like that, speechless, maybe he's bothered by the gesture, maybe he liked it, you can't understand his look. You stop immediately that pat not knowing if it bothered him or not, "I'm sorry if I off…" your words are interrupted as Joel comes dangerously close to your face, his forehead against your.
You raise an eyebrow, heart in your throat.
What's going on?
Your mouth is dry, you swallow vacuum.
You're in a complete silence that he can probably hear the beat of your heart, it beats fast, very fast. You're so inexperienced that you don't know what the next move is, well if you'd have a clear situation, you'd waited for a kiss from him, but you don't known him, you know nothing about each other.
He knows about you that you are a young woman caged by an apprehensive mother, and you about him that he's a very lonely man, but with a big heart. Is that enough?
Of course not.
But then why do you yearn for contact with his lips?
You're sure, if you'd had more experience, he would have kissed you already and…?
Oh, watch your thoughts, please!
Weren't you the one who wanted to meet the boy in the bar?
Then why are you thinking about Joel and would you like to kiss him?
Suddenly a flash of lightning, followed by a very violent clap of thunder that rattles the glass of the cabin, rips through that oh-so-perfect-yes, perfect-moment. You retreat and he does the same. You look toward the window, he gets up and goes to the window, you see him looking out, laying his hands on his hips, sighing heavily, and you see him shake his head.
Is he also thinking about how many strange moments are being created between you in such a short time?
The rain becomes torrential, then ends up as hail and finally snow. Joel looks outside several times, while you are lying on the double bed with your leg stretched out, ice packs and your head resting on the pillow. You would like to make yourself useful, but Joel has ordered you not to move. You hope with all your heart that you will soon be able to return home. You fear that your mother might return and not find you.
"I have bad news," Joel says at the door.
"What?"
"We're stuck." you swallow "I don't mind your company, but…"
"Did you try to-" you're about to say throwing yourself out of bed "AH!" you exclaim in pain.
"Stop!" he exclaims as he enters the room and comes toward you "You certainly for the time being better not rest your leg or walk on it! I'll take care of you." a warm feeling spreads in your chest "For the night I'll sleep on the couch and you here…"
"No way, your house, your bed."
"A lady always sleeps in the bed." you swallow "Seriously, I sleep over there."
"That couch can't hold me, how will it hold you?" you ask him sincerely concerned.
"Then I'll sleep on the floor, a safe sleeping bag is there somewhere," he says looking around and opening the closets. He picks up a thick red and green wool blanket and is about to leave the room, you stop him.
"Joel, I mean it. I'll sleep over there. Please don't make me feel like a burden." you say getting up anyway feeling a great pain in your knee.
He sighs heavily, shakes his head and comes toward you again "You are not a burden. You're a beautiful girl, you're so sweet, you're -- " you look into each other's eyes for a long time.
Why doesn't he speak?
What is he thinking about?
He looks away, "Nothing, um, never mind. Don't move, just lie back down. I'll get you more ice."
"If you open the door you'll find some fresh!" you exclaim.
He turns to you with a small smile, a smile you return with an amused air, then walks away.
Only then do you find yourself swallowing hard and realizing your heart is pounding. Is it not that you are beginning to like your music teacher?

The 8 Principles of mecha or: "How mecha is something?"
So a lot of people bicker over "what a mecha" or "what a mech" is.
In cooperation with some friends who are amateur mechanical designers over Discord beginning in 2016, I put together a robust functional definition which can even tell you "how mecha" something is by modelling "mecha-ness" as a spectrum.
Subject to change, via ongoing discussion and refinement in communicative terminology. This communicates the terms of mecha in the sense of a pure vehicle, rather than the artistic expression or cultural notion of "mecha" which I believe are very different things from what is described here.
The 8 principles of mecha
1. Principle of vector The system must be designed around omni-directional movement and be able to fire at objects which are not in boresight. 2. Principle of mobility The primary equipment mounts must support movement in some way, such as varying the centre-mass of the body via posture or allowing a platform to right itself if it falls. Secondary weapon mounts do not need to meet this requirement. 3. Principle of affordance The platform must be able to climb to platforms and ledges which have an interior gap at the point of classical accordance which is greater than one length of the platform's body. 4.Principle of centre The platform must support the dynamic repositioning of its centre mass through large moving elements. 5. Principle of duplex The fire control system of the platform must be capable of both firing based on cued tracking information, or along a given vector relative to the platform's forward 180 degrees. 6. Principle of regime If armed and guidance is available, it should also be equally effective against ground or air targets via sensor fusion and situational data synthesis through the use of situational intelligence software systems. 7. Principle of landings The platform must be able to endure a landing at 30% of its terminal velocity and be able to continue mission duties conventionally. 8. Principle of support Although not a strict must, the platform should support a variety of non-combat duties such as engineering, construction and maintenance tasks essential in the establishment of a forward operating base with only minor changes to its loadout.
Try it on any vehicle you like, and you'll get a quantized estimation of "how mecha" it is, with appropriate weighting and bias.
By treating them with a functional spectrum, we can make deeper insights into exactly how we define mecha, and even infer new shapes, forms and layouts which previously aren't well addressed or solved for in the genre.
You'll be shocked how many non-mecha have mecha like aspects, and how un-mecha some mecha actually are.

Updated B-52 electronic warfare suite will be tested in flight in 2024
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/29/2024 - 10:36 in Military
Flying through the skies since the 1950s, the B-52 Stratofortress is a U.S. Air Force (USAF) workhorse and a lasting symbol of American military power. The eight-engine giant has unique capabilities unparalleled to any other American warplane - which is why, after more than 70 years of service, it continues to play a vital role in the defense and national security strategy of the U.S. And thanks to a collaboration between L3Harris and USAF, this iconic aircraft is prepared to remain ready for the mission against highly sophisticated emerging threats in the coming decades.
Under a 10-year contract worth $947 million granted in 2021, L3Harris is upgrading and improving the AN/ALQ-172 electronic war self-protection system (EW), which protects the B-52 and air crews from a wide range of electronic threats. Our current work is based on decades of experience in providing critical technology as a Manufacturer of Original Equipment of the AN/ALQ-172 systems for the B-52 fleet. And combined with other ongoing modernization efforts, these updates will increase the relevance and reliability of the B-52 by the 2050s.

"Our opponents continue to evolve, facing advanced and far-reaching threats that challenge our ability to operate in contested environments," says Robert "Trip" Raymond, USAF's Program Leader for EW Technology Development at L3Harris. "It is essential that we provide our B-52 crew with the necessary tools to keep the B-52 relevant, lethal and survivable as the backbone of the strategic bomber force of the United States."
The effort of modernization and support - ALQ-172 Maintenance and Reliability System (MARS) - intends to do exactly that, increasing the average time between failures due to its modular design, while further improving the performance, maintenance capacity and reliability of the system. Thanks to an integrated and improved radio frequency system, crews will be able to simultaneously combat multiple radar threats that interfere with aircraft operations. And by replacing analog systems with more economical software solutions, USAF will be able to reduce the size of B-52 crews from 5 to 4. This frees up resources for additional mission-critical activities.
Ultimately, the updates will further help USAF in its Global Attack Mission and strengthen the effectiveness of the B-52 in modern warfare, while making future upgrades cheaper and easier.
"We are implementing affordable solutions that not only reduce costs, but also provide crews with more advanced protection against the most sophisticated threats detected by radar," said Jimmy Mercado, Program Director at L3Harris. "All this results in a more modern, efficient and effective aircraft, ready to dominate the future struggle."
USAF plans to conduct a test flight with the new electronic warfare capabilities of the B-52 in 2024.
