A group of journalists held a public appeal yesterday for an end to Israel’s siege of the northern Gaza Strip, where practically no food aid has entered since October 2023. People in the north are living and dying in famine due to the complete blockade by the IOF.
To make matters worse, most mainstream media outlets are ignoring the plight of north Gaza, as the journalists and other people remaining in the north are predominantly Arabic-speaking. The north of Gaza is starving in silence.
Instagram user faridaek has been kind enough to repost the appeal with English subtitles added. This is a significant undertaking that we greatly appreciate, and we ask everyone with an Instagram account to share the video.
The journalist speaking is Islam Bader. He and his colleagues are making this appeal on behalf of the people of northern Gaza. The journalists present include Abed Alqadr Sabbah, Mahmoud Al-Awadia, Momin Abu Owda, Mahmoud Sabbah, Mahmoud El-Shareef, Anas Al-Sharif, Islam Bader, Mohammed Ahmed, and Fadi Al-Whidi, among others. The subtitles read
From the north of the Gaza Strip, we, as journalists still stationed here in the north stand today driven by our ethical responsibility and national duty as a voice for all those who remain steadfast in Gaza and its north who are being subjected to a policy of extermination and a policy of starvation which is no less than extermination. The markets have been emptied of all essentials, and there is no flour available except in rare instances. The occupation does not allow aid to enter, maintaining its obstinate siege against our people and our families. We are of this people, and today we speak for Palestinians, for the besieged and for those denied life’s essentials. The most basic necessities have now become extremely rare in Gaza.
Therefore, we issue this call as a final warning, about a severe famine that is unprecedented on a global scale and impacting all facets of life, particularly children, individuals with chronic conditions and society’s most vulnerable groups. We hold the Israeli occupation and the international community especially the United States responsible for this starvation because it is happening in front of the eyes and ears of the entire world without any concrete action [on the ground] to stop it. The occupation’s claims of aid delivery are deceptive and unfounded. In reality, nothing has entered the north of the Gaza Strip.
Therefore, this final call, on behalf of all these people, on behalf of our fellow journalists, on behalf of our families and on behalf of Palestinians and the displaced in the north of the Gaza Strip is for the world to uphold its responsibility. North Gaza is starving, and this famine must be stopped.

[TASK 139: JORDAN]
In celebration of Arab American Heritage Month, here’s a masterlist below compiled of over 350+ Jordanian faceclaims categorised by gender with their occupation and ethnicity denoted if there was a reliable source. If you want an extra challenge use random.org to pick a random number! Of course everything listed below are just suggestions and you can pick whichever character or whichever project you desire.
Any questions can be sent here and all tutorials have been linked below the cut for ease of access! REMEMBER to tag your resources with #TASKSWEEKLY and we will reblog them onto the main! This task can be tagged with whatever you want but if you want us to see it please be sure that our tag is the first five tags, @ mention us or send us a messaging linking us to your post!
THE TASK - scroll down for FC’s!
STEP 1: Decide on a FC you wish to create resources for! You can always do more than one but who are you starting with? There are links to masterlists you can use in order to find them and if you want help, just send us a message and we can pick one for you at random!
STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNG’s, fancasts, alternative FC’s - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didn’t use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.
THINGS YOU CAN MAKE FOR THIS TASK -  examples are linked!
Stumped for ideas? Maybe make a masterlist or graphic of your favourite faceclaims. A masterlist of names. Plot ideas or screencaps from a music video preformed by an artist. Masterlist of quotes and lyrics that can be used for starters, thread titles or tags. Guides on culture and customs.

Hope for dementia sufferers as blood pressure drug appears to combat disease
Tumblr media
British scientists have raised hopes for vascular dementia sufferers after discovering that a drug used to treat high blood pressure could be used to combat the disease.
Researchers at the University of Manchester say amlodipine could be repurposed to slow the incurable condition after testing its efficacy on mice.
Vascular dementia is caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, which ultimately kills brain cells and can be a result of the narrowing and blockage of small blood vessels in the brain. Its link to high blood pressure has long been the subject of research.
This was the first time the effects of a range of blood-pressure medication on these damaged arteries were tested.
The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, found that mice treated with amlodipine had better blood flow to more active areas of the brain.
Researchers found the drug allowed their arteries to widen, leading to increased oxygen flow to affected parts of the brain.
Amlodipine was found to restore the activity of a special protein known as Kir2.1, which is present in cells lining the blood vessels and protects the brain from the harmful effects of high blood pressure.
The team aims to run clinical trials in humans. If successful, it would be the first approved drug to help the condition that affects millions of people worldwide.
Prof Metin Avkiran, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said the study was “a vital step forward towards finding new ways of stopping vascular dementia from progressing”.
Dr Adam Greenstein, clinical senior lecturer in cardiovascular sciences at the University of Manchester, who led the research team, said the way vascular dementia develops has “remained a mystery until now”.
“Patients are presenting with symptoms of vascular dementia earlier than ever before, and with further research we could potentially offer those patients hope to prevent the progression of this life-changing disease.”

Trump plan to move U.S. embassy to Jerusalem angers Middle East Christians
By Loveday Morris, Washington Post, December 13, 2017
JERUSALEM--Some of the festive cheer was missing this weekend at a public Christmas tree lighting near the site where Christians believe an angel proclaimed Christ’s birth to local shepherds.
“Our oppressors have decided to deprive us from the joy of Christmas,” Patriarch Michel Sabbah, the former archbishop and Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, told the crowd in the town of Beit Sahour in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. “Mr. Trump told us clearly Jerusalem is not yours.”
The Trump administration’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move the U.S. Embassy there has provoked widespread opposition among Christians across the Middle East. When Vice President Pence arrives next week on a trip touted as a chance to check on the region’s persecuted Christians, he will be facing an awkward backlash.
The pope of the Egyptian Coptic Church, who leads the largest Christian denomination in the Middle East, has called off a scheduled meeting with Pence in Cairo. The Chaldean Church in Iraq warned this week that the White House move on Jerusalem risks sparking regional violence and extremism and demanded that the Trump administration respect U.N. resolutions on the city.
In the West Bank city of Bethlehem, which is about 12 percent Christian and is a scheduled stop on Pence’s tour, religious leaders turned off the city’s Christmas tree lights last week to protest the White House announcement.
On Sunday, demonstrators staged a sit-in outside the Church of the Nativity, built on the site thought to be the birthplace of Jesus. “We will not receive Mr. Pence here,” said Saleh Bandak, a Bethlehem-born Christian politician who attended Sunday’s protest.
While the news has been badly received among Christian communities in the Middle East, the move was in part a political gesture aimed at Christians: white evangelical voters, who backed Trump overwhelmingly in last year’s presidential election. American evangelical Christians--who believe that the right of the Jews to Jerusalem is enshrined in the Bible and that their presence there will usher in Judgment Day--were a powerful lobbying force behind the decision.
Palestinian Christians complain that Christian evangelicals’ support of Israel doesn’t take into consideration the rights and needs of Christians in the homeland of their religion.
“This is where it all started,” said the Rev. Mitri Raheb, a Lutheran pastor in Bethlehem. “The Bible originated in Palestine, not in the Bible Belt, but people in the Bible Belt read the Bible in a way that really makes our lives difficult.”
Trump received about 80 percent of the evangelical vote, according to exit polls, more than any other recent Republican presidential candidate.
His campaign had recognized the importance of the evangelical vote by picking Pence, then Indiana governor, as Trump’s running mate. A self-described Catholic evangelical, Pence helped energize and turn out that constituency.
The White House recognition of Jerusalem went ahead despite warnings from Pope Francis; the archbishop of Canterbury, who heads the Church of England and is a leader for Anglicans worldwide; and the heads and patriarchs of various churches in Jerusalem. Egypt’s Coptic Church said the decision had disregarded the feelings of millions of Arabs.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has canceled his meeting with the vice president following the decision, making it unclear whether Pence will still visit Bethlehem on a tour that was meant to include Jerusalem, the West Bank and Egypt. A spokeswoman for Pence said she could not share details of changes to his schedule at this time.
The White House has repeatedly said it is seeking to better protect Christians in the Middle East. Christians are estimated to make up less than 2 percent of the Palestinian population in the West Bank, Jerusalem and Gaza, a shrinking but influential minority. Most are Greek Orthodox, but they also include Catholics, Lutherans and Anglicans. The evangelical community is a tiny minority.
“When they talk about Christian minorities in danger, they talk about Iraq and other regions where ISIS is the threat,” Raheb said, referring to Islamic State militants. “They never, ever address the issue of Palestinian Christians under Israeli occupation.”
Pence has been a longtime proponent of the embassy move and hinted at Trump’s decision in a speech the week before the announcement. In a video message to Republicans in Israel in October, Pence described Jerusalem as “the eternal, undivided capital of the Jewish people.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that only Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem can ensure freedom of access to the city’s holy sites, sacred to Jews, Christian and Muslims. Jews were expelled from Jerusalem’s Old City in the 1948 Arab-Israeli war and synagogues were ransacked and destroyed. During that same war, many Palestinian Christians fled or were expelled from areas now under Israeli control; like other displaced Palestinians, they are denied the right to return.
In reaction to Trump’s announcement, Netanyahu said there would be “no change whatsoever” to the status quo of the holy sites.
Raheb notes that there is no freedom of access to Jerusalem for Christian and Muslim men under 55 and women under 50 living in the West Bank, who both need to obtain a permit to visit.
“Our mere existence as Christians here is inconvenient as it means this conflict can’t be framed as a religious war between Jews and Muslims,” said Raheb. “It’s not about religion. It’s a political conflict over land and resources.”
The Rev. Jamal Khader, the parish priest for a Catholic congregation of 500 families in the West Bank city of Ramallah, said he fears that the White House will inflame sectarianism between Christians and Muslims and give extremists an excuse to attack Christians. In making the White House announcement in front of a Christmas tree, Trump framed it as a declaration by the Christian West aimed at the Muslim world, Khader said.
“We are trying to convince people, especially Christians, to avoid violence,” he said. “But I’m worried. How can I convince young people to react in a nonviolent way?”
Trump said his announcement didn’t mean the United States was taking a position on whether Israel ultimately had sovereignty over all of Jerusalem, but Palestinians were not reassured.
“Of course everyone is upset about it. This is a political issue,” said Theophilos III, the patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church in Jerusalem, which he called “a city for the whole world, two people and three religions.”
But evangelical Trump supporters have gushed with praise for the decision. “We and the millions of Christians we represent will never forget your courageous act,” Christians United for Israel said in a full-page ad in The Washington Post on Sunday thanking Trump.

Smart buses to make traveling easier for Lahoris
Tumblr media
An Egyptian bus-hailing service named Swvl has launched in Lahore, which provides affordable and comfortable buses for daily commute. It is similar to the coaches and buses which run in the city, but instead of a first-come-first-serve system, the booking has to be made online. The company currently has a fleet of air-conditioned 13-seater Hiaces and 21-seater buses. It has hired both full-time and part-time drivers who are paid on a per-ride basis. The rates are charged according to the distance, starting from Rs50 for a 25km ride. There’s no surge pricing which means that the rates are fixed and don’t change in rush hours. The payment option is cash, but an online payment option will be introduced soon too. Swvl was founded by three young Egyptian entrepreneurs: Mostafa Kandil, the CEO, Mahmoud Nouh, the COO and Ahmed Sabbah, the CTO. “Our target market consists of young individuals who value comfort and reliability while being financially prudent,” General Manager Shahzeb Memon told SAMAA Digital. “These boys and girls are always on the go and want a new-age, efficient mode of travel,” he said. Memon explained that the service is not just targeting previous ride-hailing users but creating options for a large chunk of the Pakistani population who could previously not afford to use ride-hailing services. When asked how Swvl aims to make its place in the market, Memon said, “We offer a transport service at a price cheaper than rickshaws, cars, taxis or other ride-hailing services”. How can you book a ride? The process is simple. All you have to do is download the app from Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store. You can explore the existing routes or enter your pickup and drop-off locations. The app shows the estimated walking time to the pickup station, where the bus will pick you at a designated time. The bus will drop you off at your selected drop-off station after which you have to walk towards your final destination point. A live tracking option is available, through which you can see the location of the booked vehicle and reach your chosen pickup point on time. Swvl operates at the following routes in Lahore: Askari 11 – DHA – Main Blvd – China Chowk Askari 11 – DHA – Bahria Town PKLI DHA Phase 6 – Ferozepur Road DHA Phase 6- Johar Town- Valencia Shad Bagh – GT Road – Shalimar Link Road- Ferozpur Road Wapda Town- Faisal Town- Gulberg- Jail Road Jallo- Mughalpura Underpass- Mall Road Underpass – Thokar Niaz Baig Shalimar Link Road – Canal Road – Multan Road – Bahria Town They plan to have a presence across Lahore with curated travel options for their customers. The service will expand to Karachi by the end of the year. The company aims to offer quality customer service and maximum number of routes. As they have already made their mark in Kenya and Egypt, they believe their expansion to Pakistan would be a success. “Our reputation across Egypt and Kenya speaks volumes about how we have become an integral part of the daily lives of people,” Memon remarked. He believes that Swvl’s strength lies in the technology platform and localized consumer service and experiences. Read the full article

Journalists Mahmoud Sabbah and Abed Alqadr Sabbah report from a small medical facility in Jabaliya. The facility is surrounded by bombardment and shrapnel continues to cause damage to the structure. You can see that the bombing is so close that the air from the explosions makes the plastic wrap over the broken windows flutter. Both report that the attacks have never been this intense, and the situation right now is very dangerous and uncertain.

do you know who is in this photo from november? are they still alive? where can i follow them?
Tumblr media
As far as I know, they are all still alive. From left to right: Fadi Al-Whidi, Hossam Shabat, Mohammed Saber Arab, Mahmoud Abusalama, Mahmoud Al-Sharif (I think), Anas Al-Sharif, Abdullah Obead (no longer in the north), Abood Abusalama (I think), Mahmoud Sabbah (I think), Momin Abu Owda, Mohammed Ahmed, Mahmoud Al-Awadia, Hamza Hammad (seriously injured but still alive as far as I know), unknown, Ahmed Hamdan (I think).
They all have Instagram accounts, which I will link soon. In the mean time, I will put the known individuals’ names in the tags so you can search our posts and find links to their accounts. Tomorrow or the day after I will edit this post and add direct links.
Any corrections or additions are welcome

At Khalifa School in the previous post, journalist Mahmoud Sabbah documents the return of the people of Gaza to the area, with some displaced people using the remains of the school as a shelter. They have carried with them damaged solar panels that were originally on a home or business, but have been repaired. They have been hooked up to batteries, and can now power small devices. The people of Gaza will always rebuild. Always.

A few hours ago, journalist Mahmoud Sabbah documented the detonation of flare bombs over Jabaliya. Flare bombs are used to illuminate an area for reconnaissance, so that the sender of the flare can get information about a spot, often to launch an attack. In Gaza, every time these flares appear, a bombing campaign follows soon after, with ground attacks often accompanying.
Tumblr media
Now, multiple sources report increased bombardment of and near Jabaliya. Shukri Filfil and Shadi Mahmoud report constant shelling, while Tamer Al-Najjar reports almost being killed by sniper fire.
