Maharaj: 10 Steps that Made Rape Seem Sacred
I watched with great interest the film Maharaj on Netflix. It is, no doubt, a controversial film, not because people tried to ban it, but because it portrays a shocking story based on true events. Spoilers begin here. The plot in short: Karsan (played by Junaid Khan) is a social reformer who is engaged to the innocent and beautiful Kishori (Shalini Pandey). They live in a community that is ruled…

maharaj as a movie is so weird because it touches upon the issues that india very much faced and still faces, but then it deflects any actual commentary by laying the fault with the baba and the common libel speech about how this IS a systemic problem and someone will come to be the bad guy again, but like....
i dont really know how to explain it properly. like it brushes over the actual reasons in a way i wish it didnt. but also i understand why they might not have done it because at this point india is so religiously polarised that going deeper into how hinduism was is and will always been an exploitative slave system is like a career suicide. and maybe mob lynching

THE WAR IS ON!
~ Nisargadatta Maharaj
Questioner:
The war is on!
What is your attitude to it?
•• Nisargadatta Maharaj:
In some place or other, in some form or other, the war is always 'on'. Was there a time when there was no war?
Some say it is the will of God.
Some say it is God's play.
It is another way of saying that wars are inevitable, and nobody is responsible.
Questioner:
But what is your attitude?
•• Nisargadatta Maharaj:
Why impose attitudes on me?
I have no attitude to call my own!
Questioner:
Surely somebody is responsible for this horrible and senseless carnage.
Why do people kill each other so readily?
•• Nisargadatta Maharaj:
Search for the culprit within.
The ideas of 'me' and 'mine', are at the root of all conflict.
Be free of them, and you will be out of conflict.
Questioner:
What of it, that I am out of conflict?
... It will not affect the war.
If I am the cause of war, I am ready to be destroyed. Yet, it stands to reason that the disappearance of a thousand like me, will not stop wars.
They did not start with my birth, nor will end with my death. I am not responsible. Who is?
•• Nisargadatta Maharaj:
Strife and struggle are a part of existence.
Why don't you inquire who is responsible for existence?
Questioner:
Why do you say that existence and conflict are inseparable? Can there be no existence without strife? I need not fight other, to be myself!
•• Nisargadatta Maharaj:
You fight others all the time for your survival, as a separate body-mind – a particular name and form.
To live, you must destroy!
From the moment you were conceived, you started a war with your environment – a merciless war of mutual extermination, until death sets you free!
Questioner:
My question remains unanswered.
You are merely describing what I know – life and its sorrows.
But who is responsible, you do not say!?
When I press you, you throw the blame on God, or karma, or on my own greed and fear – which merely invites further questions.
... Give me the final answer!
•• Nisargadatta Maharaj:
The final answer is this: nothing IS!
All is a momentary appearance in the field of the Universal Consciousness; continuity as 'Name and Form', is a mental formation only, easy to dispel.
Questioner:
I am asking about the immediate,
The transitory, the appearance.
Here is a picture of a child killed by soldiers. It is a fact staring at you. You cannot deny it.
... Now, who is responsible for the death of the child?
•• Nisargadatta Maharaj:
Nobody, and everybody!
The world is what it contains, and each thing affects all others.
.We all kill the child and we all die with it!
Every event has innumerable causes, and produces numberless effects. It is useless to keep accounts – nothing is traceable!
Questioner:
Your people speak of karma and retribution!
•• Nisargadatta Maharaj:
It is merely a gross approximation;
... In reality we are all creators and creatures of each other, causing and bearing each other's burden.
Questioner:
So, the innocent suffers for the guilty?
•• Nisargadatta Maharaj:
In our ignorance – we are innocent;
In our actions – we are guilty!
We sin without knowing, and suffer without understanding.
Our only hope: to stop, to look, to understand, and to get out of the traps of memory.
For memory feeds imagination, and imagination generates desire, and fear.
Questioner: Why do I imagine at all?!
•• Nisargadatta Maharaj:
The light of Consciousness passes through the film of memory, and throws pictures on your brain.
Because of the deficient, and disordered state of your brain, what you perceive is distorted and colored by feelings, of like and dislike.
Make your thinking orderly, and free from emotional overtones, and you will see people and things as they are, with clarity and charity.
'The witness' of birth, life and death, is one and the same. It is the witness of pain, and of love.
For while the existence in limitation and separation is sorrowful – we love it!
We love it – and hate it, at the same time!
We fight, we kill, we destroy life and property, and yet we are affectionate, and self-sacrificing.
We nurse the child tenderly, and orphan it too.
Our life is full of contradictions!
Yet we cling to it!
This clinging, is at the root of everything.
... Still, it is entirely superficial.
We hold on to something or somebody, with all our might, and next moment we forget it; like a child that shapes its mud-pies, and abandons them, light-heatedly.
Touch them – and it will scream with anger, divert the child, and he forgets them.
For our life is now, and the love of it, is now!
We love variety, the play of pain and pleasure, we are fascinated by contrasts. For this we need the opposites, and their apparent separation.
We enjoy them for a time, and then get tired and crave for the peace and silence of pure being.
... The cosmic heart beats ceaselessly.
... I am the witness, and the heart too!
Questioner:
I can see 'the picture', but who is 'the painter'?
... Who is responsible for the terrible, and yet adorable experience?!
•• Nisargadatta Maharaj:
The painter is in the picture!
You separate 'the painter' from 'the picture', and look for him.
... Don't separate and don't put false questions!
Things are as they are, and nobody – in particular, is responsible. The idea of personal responsibility comes from the illusion of agency: 'Somebody must have done it, somebody is responsible'.
Society, as it is now – with its framework of laws and customs, is based on the idea of separate, and responsible personality,
but this is not the only form that a society can take.
There may be other forms, where the sense of separation is weak, and responsibility diffused.

𝐀𝐆𝐀𝐑 𝐓𝐔𝐌 𝐒𝐀𝐀𝐓𝐇 𝐇𝐎 | ʀᴀɴᴀ ɴᴀɪᴅᴜ
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ᴘᴀɪʀɪɴɢ : Rana Naidu x Fem!Oc
ғᴀɴᴅᴏᴍ : Rana Naidu
ʟᴇɴɢᴛʜ : 2.2k
ᴄᴏɴᴛᴀɪɴs : Rana is a mess, him breaking down, mentions of sexual assault, he cries pretty bad, he gets sick too, blood, hurt/comfort.
sᴜᴍᴍᴀʀʏ : 𝐈𝐍 𝐖𝐇𝐈𝐂𝐇 one person he needs the most comes back at the most important time.
ᴍᴀsᴛᴇʀʟɪs
__________________
Rana Naidu was an anomaly, a very strong headed and extremely smart anomaly. He was one of a kind man, always practical, seems to know the solution to everything, a fixer in true sense.
To people, celebrities, his kids, his brothers, even his father, he was this sorted person who knew how to solve everything for everyone.
It was not after he grew up or since his teens no, he was like this since the age of say ten. He knew what to say to Jaffa when he repeatedly asked for daddy and Naga was nowhere to be seen, or what would comfort Tej when he cried about their dying mother.
He always knew what to tell his drunk father, who has come home at ungodly hours, so he doesn't cause much of a ruckus and wakes up everyone.
He knew what to do when Jaffa went through all the shit, what would convince, which person so they let him slip in the film world. He knew what to do when a woman was murdered in front of him.
That's why he was who he was, the problem solver, the fixer. The one solution to every problem.
Was that the reality? Not quite.
Rana Naidu was a fucking mess, emotionally unstable, extremely violent and traumatized man. His mind was a mess of endless thoughts and ninety hundred ninety-nine out of thousand of them were either negative or memories he wanted to scratch out of his brain forever.
Memories that made him physically sick, scared him, made him anxious, enraged him, made him so berserk all at the same time.
He was constantly in a battle with himself to conquer these vulnerabilities and barely making it every morning but making it and that was why he was seen as a strong man.
A man who was a pillar of strength for his brother, a trying and good father to his kids, a guaranteed solution to the elites and a deadly thorn in his father's side.
But there was one person, just one person, for whom he was just Rana. A guy they met in the street, late at night and who had sat down and talked to their drunk self and that person was his wife.
Ishika Rathore Naidu. A woman of many talents and many faces and jobs, the most beautiful of spectacle in love with a disaster like him.
She was simple, very simple. She was a great wife and a wonderful mother, a gentle soul who made his house home.
At the same time she was very different. She was a martial arts expert, a sharp shooter who never missed, a brutal force beside him who wasn't afraid to help him hammer a problem to straighten the creases it was causing.
But most importantly she was his strength, his balance, his remaining sanity, the little normalcy he desperately clinged to, a safe place he hid in.
So when he received the call of Vjayawada Maharaj was in Tej's studio, she was the first thought as feet was snatched from beneath his feet.
For more than a minute there was nothing but a blank noise ringing in his ears and his first instinct was to steady himself mentally before Tej told him about Jaffa had ended up shooting the man, who was slowly dying from the shot wound and he immediately speaks in the phone that he would be there before hanging up.
On his way he decides to call Sirini.
“Sirini, is she back yet??”
He asked his feet pressing down on the escalator, he could feel the uneasiness settling in but this was not the time, Jaffa was probably panicking a lot more than him and Tej would die under the weight of his own morals if he was late.
“Not yet but she will be in town in a few hours.”
The reply makes Rana curse, banging his hand on the bluetooth panel of his car, hanging up the call. He reaches the studio in record time pushing the doors open to come face to face with a conflicted Tej and a blood covered Jaffa.
Looking at the man brings back unpleasant memories, the way Vjayawada Maharaj looked at him made him recall a shit ton of nonsense and it drove him insane.
He paced around the room, the bleeding man now shifted to lie on the sofa while he was having an argument with Tej who wanted to save the man.
Seriously his brother was beyond his understanding, knowing after what type of man he was he wanted to save him for a damn promise. Not to mention the constant pleas of the man to let him go, to help him sounded too familiar to comfort and Rana could feel his stomach churning.
He was about to say something way harsher than he ever had to Tej when he saw it, Vijayawada caressing Jaffa's head and just by the look he could tell the feel of the touch, the hair on his nape standing up as his feet carried him towards the man, blinded by the rage.
Rana punched him at least five times, right in the face, it was like having a black out yet having the feeling of finally letting go before Tej managed to pull him off the man.
He wanted to murder the man, his slow death felt like it was stiching a deep cut running through him. Rana wanted to strangle the man to death but going near him felt like a punch to his gut and it immediately made him take a step back
His thoughts were cutt of when his phone repeatedly vibrated in his pocket and he took it out to see what was so important.
“Yeah-”
Rana wasn't even able to look who's phone he answered when he heard the sirens followed by Maharaj speaking to his older brother.
“I knew you would save me Tej, I knew you would.”
He hangs up the call, looking at his brother.
“You called the ambulance? Tej really?”
Rana tried his best to sound normal and not like he was irked even if it was. Damn his brother and his naive morals or whatever. He tries to calm himself down while Tej speaks about saving the life and whatever before he spoke.
“Look Tej, hear me out, if we take him to a hospital it will cause an issue. I have contacts in a nursing home, I will take him there myself but you have to send this ambulance back.”
He continues when his brother doesn't seem really convinced.
“Don't worry, this is what I do for a living. I will take care of this, you have to send them off.”
Tej nods in agreement before going to answer the door while he gets Jaffa and Arjun to hold down Vjayawada who starts thrashing immediately. What a persistent man.
It took a little acting and some money but Tej managed to send off the ambulance before coming back to Vijayawada almost crying, how amusing.
“Why did you send them back Tej!? I thought you were helping me!?”
“Don't start a scene, Rana is taking you to a nursing home himself.”
The speed at which the old man turns his way makes him question why he didn't snap his neck then and there but the look in those eyes tell him everything.
Tej doesn't know, neither does Jaffa. Arjun was out of the question from the beginning. No one in the room except for him and the asshole knew that consequences of his actions were coming to tear off his throat.
“You just sentenced me to death, you think he will save me? He of all people. He will kill me Tej he will kill me. That's why he had you send those people away, to watch me die with his own eyes.”
Tej sighs straightening up and he does feel a tiny bit for lying to his brother but oh well.
“After what I did to him, he would never spare my life-”
“Hey hey whatever are you talking about?”
That one exchange between his brother and the dying man brings all eyes on him and he steps back to pace back and forth, refusing to meet any questioning gazes.
Damn it damn it damn it all.
“So you didn't tell them anything?”
“SHUT THE FUCK UP.”
The way his throat closes immediately after that yell makes him realise how not okay he was but he would die before he let it show on his face.
“I have loved you Rana from the very beginning!!”
God not this nonsense again, he closes his eyes trying to focus on keeping his breathing normal while the man yaps bullshit.
“I loved you purely, no matter what anyone-”
One shot rings through the room and then it's silent, it gives Rana a breath of oxygen that seems to be cutting off from his system.
“He did it to you too?”
He doesn't reply to Jaffa, choosing to walk out of the studio, his brain was relapsing. Going back into memories he hated the most as his car's engine roared in sync with the thunder before he stepped on the gas.
Each time he gets a vision of that horrible day, his grip tightens on the steering wheel until his knuckles are white. He could feel that crooked touch all over him and it was making him sick.
He could feel the nausea rising closer and closer to his throat, his chest tightening with every second and his throat drying up.
Maybe it was this sickness or his foggy mind or simply the heavy rain that made him miss the car stopping in the middle of the road, missing it just by an inch when he hit the brakes he was ready to shoot the person but his resolve breaks when a familiar comes into view.
He steps out of the car, looking at the woman sitting in the driver seat, her feet resting on the road while the other was against the open door as she lit up a cigarette.
“Srini has been calling you to tell I am back, why weren't you answering, I was worr-”
Ishika cuts herself off when she looks up to come face to face with her husband standing in the downpour. She drops her cigarette and strides towards him without a care, her hands reaching to cup his face with utmost care and it breaks something in him.
He doesn't hear what she says, doesn't realise when he starts crying or when he drops to his knees. He just clings to her and sobs like no tomorrow.
Years of pain and hurt coming out in gut wrenching cries as the one man everyone depended upon crumbles right in arms of the person he loved the most.
It takes her fifteen minutes to calm him down enough to move, settling him in the car wasn't that tough, she turns on the head and slips in the driver seat, shooting a quick message to Laura to get Rana's car before she drives off.
Entering the home was the tricky part, the kids were asleep and Rana was out of it, delicately she guided him upstairs were the man slumped on the bed but refused to let go of her.
“Rana hey, what's wrong? What happened?”
Maybe the question wasn't right because not only did it make him suddenly very aware and frantic but also sent him rushing to the bathroom before she heard the vomiting sounds.
Worried for him but also wanting to give him space she stands by the door and calls Tej, when the private number isn't picked up she calls the land line which thankfully was answered.
“Hello?”
The voice was shaky and not very familiar, Arjun.
“What happened with Rana?”
Her voice cleared that she wanted answers, which she gets as the boy narrates whatever took place. She curses herself before the sound of the shower hits her ear and she hangs up.
“Rana…RANA!!”
She calls out entering the unlocked bathroom to only find her husband under the shower, soaking his already wet to the bones self in the cold shower.
“What are you- Rana- come here.”
She turned off the shower before pulling him out, it was scary how easy it was to physically move him. Coming face to face she noticed his face flushing up, pressing her palm against his forehead confirmed that he indeed had a fever.
Ishika took a breath before gently guiding him out of his clothes, coaxing him to wipe himself down before helping him with his sweats.
By the time his head hit the pillow he was panting softly, breathing through his mouth but also almost asleep. She goes to stand up and was immediately pulled back, the look in his eyes was of someone scared, scared to be alone.
“I am not going anywhere but I can't get the bed wet with my clothes can I? I am just going to change and join you okay?”
She softly coaxed him to lay back down, his death grip loosening on her arm. Changing in record time, he turns up the heat of the room when she notices him shivering a little.
Ishika takes her place beside him, choosing to sit by his head just in case she pulls up the blanket to cover his bare chest and gently caresses his hair.
“It's okay Rana, go to sleep. I got you. It will be alright.”
That was the last thing that he heard before he fell asleep to the rhythm of a hand running through his hair.
The problems were to be dealt with tomorrow, for now Rana Naidu, was a broken sick man trying to find a night of peaceful sleep in his home, beside his wife.

Solveig (She/Her) by @spellinwaiting
Why Should Your OC Win?
her life is so fucking hard she needs to win something just once
What is Your OC Like?
solveig is my tes oblivion oc and she has just SO many problems. imagine being severely mentally ill in a medieval fantasy setting with no access to proper mental health care. one time someone tried to mug her but then realized she had nothing and they felt so bad for her and the whole state she was in the mugger was like 'ok you need help' and became her friend. shes blessed to have an orc wife who loves her no matter how many times she sprints off into the woods in the midst of a manic episode. what else? she has a horse named 'horse' because she couldnt come up with anything better. she wants to be a heroic knight but is far better at killing people than saving them. her solution to most of her problems is to lie face down on the floor motionless for a while (also the picture is done by my friend whose url is @symbie not by me, i hope thats alright, also i put that here cause i didnt know where else to)
Chandra Maharaj (She/Her) by @dreamypyon
Why Should Your OC Win?
She's so stupid and mean. she's just a huge mean pathetic jerk i love her. i think she's extremely horrendous because of how much of a jerk she can be.
What is Your OC Like?
Chandra is a gloomy debby downer who doesn't have many friends and claims to prefer it that way. Despite this she gets roped into the tragedy of everyone wants to be her friend anyways, because like how can anyone not want a bunch of friends to party with. the protagonist Valerie thinks she's just shy and could be won over with enough love and snuggles, but chandra is actually just mean. She likes horror films and trashy romance novels, and garbage josei manga and werewolves, her hobby is fixing computers and selling parts for extra cash

Raayan- I have high hopes (thank you tamil cinema)
I have for some time lost hope in telugu cinema improving in diversity of tropes and performances but with recent stars and movies I have been brought back
Gam gam ganesha, prasanna vadanam, Hi nanna (kinda iffy for some reason but diverse storyline), and Hanuman
And I am waiting to see Kalki 2829 AD which I think will be definitely a big game changer given its dystopian setting something Indian cinema hasn't really approached a lot before especially on this kind of budget.
I've been limited to telugu movies for a long time because language barrier but due to subtitles and Telugu dubs my options have increased recently I watched the hindi movie Maharaj on Netflix in telugu which I really loved despite people claiming its hinduphobic while the movie is based on a real case and the movie claims yet again how hindu practices aren't bad but people misusing them is then again not a lot of people have comprehension or actually watched the movie and jump the train on any movie that slightly criticizes the religion or even raises just a few questions
*cough* *cough*
"Hindi movie PK starring Amir Khan"
I've watched a few good tamil cinemas when I was younger I didn't watch a lot of Dhanush movies because of the language barrier the only one I saw maybe was Maari 1 and 2 because it was dubbed in telugu but now I've grown to watch a lot more realizing he has a lot of diverse scripts and am so glad this man exists I need to binge his movies over the summer.
So I was listening to telugu songs on youtube when I came across this one called
"Peechu Mithaya"- telugu version
It's from the upcoming movie Raayan and oh my god just seeing this lyric video made me want to pay anything for this movie to come out right now and watch it.
Not only is the music beautiful ( i can listen to this for hours I don't know how I found this gem but I did and I'm grateful)
But the visuals and implications we are given is something I am screaming for.
PLUS SIZED ACTORS ON SCREEN HAVING AN ACTUAL LOVE STORY!!!!
Indian cinema has a lot of colorism especially to heroines especially from what I've seen in telugu movies. And they have to fit this perfect bod I've never seen a heroine be remotely big or a bit chubby even if it would show off their curves thats how the industry is and that saddens me.
But then we get this song and we see Aparna Balamurali who is first of all a plus sized character in the film with a dark complexion not milky white now tamil fans may be used to this but for me being born in Telugu cinema this is a jackpot especially when I have to really dig for inclusive films. The only cinema I've watched which supported a plus sized heroine having a love story is "Size Zero" starring anushka shetty an Iconic queen but I honestly have not seen any other films having a plus sized heroine or at least side heroine as a plus sized character with actual depth where we see her love story or ability to get happiness I think there was one Allari Naresh film but I don't remember it well.
edit: Totally forgot HanuMan existed which is also a good representation even though the mc's sister dies she was empowered and was on the brink of marriage so love that
In the Lyric Video "Peechu Mithaya"
We see an unconventional girl (Aparna Balamurali) who doesn't fit the beauty standards end up with an average/ attractive character (sundeep kishan) or at least have a romantic relationship in the songs visuals and a healthy one so far.
I am primarily gonna be watching this movie for them seeing the side hero carrying the plus sized side heroine brought me joy knowing that it would give hope to other women who aren't the conventional beauty standard or plus sized that they can be loved and have a love story like them that they aren't too heavy and the right guy will do anything to make them feel appreciated.
Look at the way he carries her and looks lovingly into her eyes!!!!!!

And there's just something about seeing this man looking so utterly in love with a girl who thinks she won't be good enough because of her physical appearance or other insecurities and he wants to prove her desperately wrong that makes me go feral.

Do you see what I mean!?!?!?
And I don't know if they will even delve into that kinda trope in the movie but I really wish they will since its something women especially women who've not been exposed to that kind of concept in their media want. Keep in mind we don't even have a trailer for this movie yet so pure speculations
And there's just so many cute clips like-
Nudging each other playfully!?!?!?

Having a couple argument/ confrontation!?!?!?
Tumblr media
Riding on a bike together?!?!?!?

*cues internal screaming montage*
I love LOVE especially something so simple yet beautiful we need this more than Pushpa bribing Srivalli with money for kisses and putting his hand in inappropriate places without her consent. Or men just stalking in general and normalizing it????
Now I know that this couple might not even play a big part in the movie maybe one of the characters dies yadayada but knowing that scenes like this exist in the movie and that we'll have an entire song dedicated to THEM just quells my heart.
Dhanush sir thank you for this 4 minute montage that ignited my hope in Indian cinema and is making me want to delve into tamil cinema even more
