Enabling magnetostrictive strain-sensitivity synergy in polycrystalline Fe₈₁Ga₁₉ alloys
Magnetostrictive Fe-Ga alloys with low temperature dependence, high permeability, and good mechanical properties have gained increasing attraction among various magnetostrictive materials. In particular, polycrystalline Fe-Ga alloys exhibit wide potential in applications such as sensors, actuators and implants owing to their structural variety and low production costs. Nevertheless, polycrystalline Fe-Ga alloys are limited by a tradeoff between large magnetostrictive strain and high sensitivity due to their inverse relationships with magnetic anisotropy. This prompts swift actions to overcome the bottleneck between magnetostrictive strain and sensitivity for wider range of applications. The magnetostrictive strain of Fe-Ga alloys is closely associated with the grain and domain structures, while the essence of magnetostrictive sensitivity lies in the ease for the motion of magnetic domains during the magnetization process. This process is subjected to various factors, including domain structure, dislocation density and grain boundary.

might make a knitting sideblog.... thinking about making a knitting sideblog......
#it would mostly be for organizational stuff and also because i feel the need to share everything with the internet.#but also like. i kinda wanna document my progress and mostly just. in this period of my knitting like track how many yarn balls i get rid o#like i have wayyy to much acrylic yarn and it's making me a lil crazy#cuz i wanna start so many projects but i know that acrylic is not really the best material#and im not even talking about in a sustainability way (yes its bad but so is wool. and cotton and linen and every other fabric)#because every fabric takes resources to produce and manufacture and there are ways to be unethical and unsustainable in all steps#of the process#but moreso i think it's kinda uncomfy and suffocating and it pills and is an absolute magnet for cat hair and i havent made a garment#with it but idt it would be great next to skin.#also im moving#so i need to get rid of stuff. anyways yeah i think im gonna make a knitting sideblog

*vibrating* I had too much fun at the surrealist costume party that I’m too excited to sleep so I started a project lol
This is an adorable stationery box I got as part of a zine earlier this year!!! The print is so cute it was the only piece of merch I got bc I loved it so much
But!! as cute as it is, it’s still a mass-manufactured paper box and there are a number of places where I think it could be improved
first, the square on the case (distance between tray and edge of case) is massive, like a whole 1/4 inch or something and I really dislike the size of it. It’s a little wonkily assembled, and the interior construction of the tray isn’t very elegant.
The ribbon is such a lovely idea, but it’s inconvenient and cumbersome to use. the box already has a magnetic closure, but it’s a little weak.
I don’t have a lot of thoughts so far besides: remove the tray, convert the ribbon closure to something else, maybe a bone clasp or a snap or honestly maybe just remove the ribbons and let it just be the magnets whatever the point is the ribbon has to go
Luckily the adhesive in the outer corners pops off fairly easily with a little pressure, and the inner parts are also pretty easy to detach, though they require a bit more force
Flattened with adhesive removed from the case! (I’ve folded the tabs back so they don’t accidentally stick to anything)
Now I have to think some more before I act so it’s bedtime, but here are the Thoughts so far
1. Tray flaps are adhered underneath the print which is essentially one long paste down across the case. In raking light, you can kind of see that it extends in about maybe half an inch? I am thinking of how to remove the flaps while keeping the thank you message and zine name. you can also see where removing the adhesive has warped and bubbled the paper. this is fine I expected it and am planning on removing the paste down on those areas anyways and replacing them with new material. I’d like to remove the part of the flap under the paste down too tbh because it’ll be unnecessary bulk. To keep the message visible, there are a few possibilities: a) I’m lucky and the whole paste down is easily removed without damaging it and I can just reuse it as a paste down! Yay! b) I can’t remove it without ruining it, so I just cut around it and build a window into the bottom of the inner tray (kind of insane and jobby, but I’ll do it if I have no other options lol) c) I say fuck it and cover it with the inner tray
2. How can I remove the ribbon and replace it with something that still complements the design? As it is, there are just slits cut in the board and the ribbon has been fed through and adhered under the paste down as well. The ribbon is quite wide, which isn’t my favorite. Thinking about creating a decorative bow which hides a snap closure.
ok those are the main Thoughts and now it’s past 3am and I’m getting pretty sleepy
good night! Absurdist costume party was great!!

djdjdjdjf I forgot to actually post this last night so anyways hi good morning

Hello! In the interest of keeping everyone up-to-date with the production of the zine, here’s the latest newsletter update. As always, if you wish to subscribe to our newsletter, please email [email protected] so we can put your email down!
✧─── ・ 。゚★: *.✦ .* :★. ───✧
We apologize for the delay in our communication! Between messaging manufacturers for quotes, managing 50 contributors and making sure we still answer our three social media, email and personal accounts, it's been a busy time for us. The mods and I hope this is a good update for everyone!
PRODUCTION UPDATES:
★ All merch and packaging material has been ordered and is on its way to our shipping and fulfillment mod, Yurei! Pictures of all merch items will be posted to our social media as they come in!
★In addition to the items in each bundle, all physical orders will include holographic stickers with our cover artist @Cosmosully's shaker charm design! This was budgeted out as a thank you for everyone's support and patience with our project.
★Because our order quantities for some items (books, stickers, and sheets) are close to a whole number (300), extras have been ordered in order to receive a bulk quantity discount. This means there MAY be a few leftover sales (10 or less stock of each item). This would be after fulfillment is complete.
★Aya, our head mod, is currently working on pressing the holographic magnets for all Early Bird, Half and Full Bundle orders by hand. It will be either these or the prints that we show first!
★The PDF of the zine is on its final revision and will be completed within a few days. After this, the printing of the zine books will begin. The final page count of the zine is 174 pages, which is significantly higher than what we marketed and estimated for the zine (which was 130+). Several of our contributors provided more artwork and writing for the project than what they came on to do initially, which was added to the book.
✧─── ・ 。゚★: *.✦ .* :★. ───✧
Many of you have reached out about shipping! As soon as we get all items, they will be shipped out accordingly. Our estimate for shipping completion is December, but some books may not arrive at your doorstep until January.
We know this is, again, not what our initial time frame was for the project. The mods and I are working as fast as we can, but we do all have lives outside of the zine. All of the mods are either in their final year of college, or are graduates with full-time jobs and shops to manage. We felt that rather than rush the book and merch out, we should focus on making sure they are works of art that both our contributors and fans of the series can look back on with fondness and take pride in having. You paid a lot to make this project happen, and therefore only the best work we can create should arrive at your doorstep! This is a passion project that we all want to see be successful, so we apologize for any inconvenience the change in schedule causes.
As always, feel free to reach out to us with any concerns or questions! Ask us anything. We want to be as transparent as possible, every question is a good question! And be sure to check out our contributor list if you haven't already, which can be found on our BigCartel and Carrd pages.
FAQ
Q: So wait, how does this work?
A: The only item we currently have in house are the magnets, as they are hand pressed, printed, and foiled by our head moderator. All other items are designed by our contributors and manufactured, then get shipped to our shipping moderator to be packaged into bundles.
Q: Oh gosh, I need to change my address now!
A: No worries, we will actually send an address confirmation email a week before we actually ship the items! Also, all physical orders come with USPS tracking; this way, there is no concern on where the package will go. This includes international orders!
Q: When will we receive the PDF?
A: PDFs will be emailed out in the same email as the address confirmation, or shortly after :)
✧─── ・ 。゚★: *.✦ .* :★. ───✧
That concludes this issue of MOTHER POWER! Stay tuned for our next issue, which is scheduled to be released later this month.
As always, fuzzy pickles!

scpbot output 2024/09/22 "A cassette recorder that only records «L'Internationale» onto tapes, regardless of input."
Item #: SCP-XXXX
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-XXXX is to be stored in a standard anomalous item locker at Site-19. The locker must be lined with soundproof material to prevent accidental audio leakage. Personnel handling SCP-XXXX must wear noise-cancelling headphones to minimize exposure to its effects.
Testing of SCP-XXXX requires Level 2 clearance and must be conducted in a soundproof chamber. All recorded tapes produced by SCP-XXXX are to be catalogued and stored separately in a secure archive. Personnel exposed to SCP-XXXX's output for more than 30 cumulative minutes must undergo psychological evaluation.
Description: SCP-XXXX is a Panasonic RQ-2102 cassette recorder, manufactured in 1982. When activated, SCP-XXXX records only the socialist anthem "L'Internationale" onto any inserted cassette tape, regardless of input audio or lack thereof. The recording is always in the original French language version, performed by a male chorus with orchestral accompaniment.
The anomalous properties of SCP-XXXX persist even when its expected power source (four AA batteries) is removed. However, the device ceases to function if the battery compartment is physically separated from the main body, suggesting an unknown internal power mechanism.
Attempts to modify or disassemble SCP-XXXX have been unsuccessful. When any component is removed or altered, it spontaneously reverts to its original state within 2-5 seconds. This "reset" occurs without any observable energy discharge or physical movement.
Exposure to SCP-XXXX's output has not been observed to cause any direct anomalous effects on human subjects. Initial reports of ideological influence were determined to be the result of confirmation bias in early testing protocols. Subsequent double-blind studies have shown no statistically significant changes in political views among test subjects.
The origin of SCP-XXXX remains unknown. It was recovered from a second-hand electronics store in ██████, France, following reports of customer complaints about "defective" recorders. Investigation into its manufacturing history and provenance is ongoing.
Addendum XXXX-1: On ██/██/20██, during a routine inspection, SCP-XXXX spontaneously activated and played "L'Internationale" at 115 decibels for exactly 3 minutes and 47 seconds before returning to its dormant state. This incident occurred precisely 100 years after the adoption of "L'Internationale" as the official anthem of the Soviet Union. The significance of this timing, if any, is under investigation.
The tapes produced by SCP-XXXX exhibit no anomalous properties themselves and can be played on non-anomalous devices without incident. Spectral analysis of the recordings shows them to be identical in every instance, down to the microscopic level of tape magnetization.

Tomtoc Navigator-T61 Rolltop Backpack 20L Review
I Recently ordered a backpack after years of using shoulder bags. I still like my briefcase/shoulder bags for client meetings or office scenarios, but they’re just not convenient for travel or out in the field work. I didn’t need a backpack specifically for cameras because I use a Sony point/shoot camera and/or a small Sony camcorder, so no extra lenses or flashes are needed to be packed. But, I definitely need something that can protect my MacBook and other gear/necessaries.
That’s when I discovered @tomtocbags a relatively newer designer/manufacturer of laptop sleeves/bags/backpacks and gear cases. I really like the modern and sleek designs of their offerings. I also like their sustainability features: Manufactured with at least 50% recycled materials, manufactured at facilities that protects the rights and health of workers, and made with chemicals safer for people and the environment. They seem to be going for the market taken up by more expensive bag manufacturers like Timbuk2. Tomtoc was a refreshing and pleasant finding.
What I like about this backpack:
Modern, sleek, sustainable, and durable design.
Ample room for gear, clothes, and other necessities. Especially when rolled all the way up. Nice padded protective pockets for both a laptop and tablet, and slots for additional gear/tech.
Water resistant materials and waterproofed front pocket and back access zippers.
Expandable side pockets that can easily accommodate larger water bottles.
Quick access back zipper for laptop/tablet pockets, luggage strap on back, and a nice key hook/strap inside front side pocket.
Comfortable back padding and padded shoulder straps (no sternum strap, which I don't mind) with three carabiner loops on each side.
Price points that are much less than what companies like Timbuk2, Stubble&Co, and Wandrd are charging.
My wishlist for Tomtoc:
Side mount/compression straps to secure a longer umbrella, taller water bottle/thermos, and/or tripod would be nice. The backpack does have two top loops on both sides of bag that a carabiner paracord (see 1st above photo) or something like a Think Tank Photo Disguise Strap could be attached to.
I would have liked the inner lining to be orange, bright yellow, or lime green for visibility when searching for things inside.
I would have liked the bag to be a little larger at least aesthetically. I’m taller/larger (6’ 1” over 200lbs) so when not fully rolled up it looks a little small on me. Not an issue when the backpacks fully packed and rolled up (expands from 17 to 20L) though. However, I can see the size being a benefit when traveling by plane or when getting around in a city environment.
Though not that big of a deal, waterproofing the top and front side zippers like the front pocket and back access ones would be a smart move going forward.
Along with the carabiner loops, I wouldn't mind seeing a D ring on one of the shoulder straps in the future. But, nothing that a carabiner paracord (see 2nd above photo) wouldn't solve.
Final thoughts:
The Tomtoc 17-20L Navigator Roll Top Laptop Backpack definitely strikes a nice balance between great quality and affordability, making it one of the best minimalist roll top backpacks available at this price range. Not only is it constructed with durable materials, but the inside is ample enough for clothes and gear perfect for both short leisure and business trips, and also daily commutes and onsite work. Definitely recommend this backpack. Looking forward to checking out more of their products.
Update: I attached an 8Link Quick Release Magnetic Sternum Strap. Helps when I’m carrying more than usual and especially while traveling/away.

Mighty radio bursts linked to massive galaxies
Results from Caltech's Deep Synoptic Array-110 provide new clues about how magnetars form
Since their discovery in 2007, fast radio bursts—extremely energetic pulses of radio-frequency light—have lit up the sky repeatedly, leading astronomers on a chase to uncover their origins. Currently, confirmed fast radio bursts, or FRBs, number in the hundreds, and scientists have assembled mounting evidence for what triggers them: highly magnetized neutron stars known as magnetars (neutron stars are a type of dead star). One key piece of evidence came when a magnetar erupted in our own galaxy and several observatories, including Caltech's STARE2 (Survey for Transient Astronomical Radio Emission 2) project, caught the action in real time.
Now, reporting in the journal Nature, Caltech-led researchers have uncovered where FRBs are more likely to occur in the universe—massive star-forming galaxies rather than low-mass ones. This finding has, in turn, led to new ideas about how magnetars themselves form. Specifically, the work suggests that these exotic dead stars, whose magnetic fields are 100 trillion times stronger than Earth's, often form when two stars merge and later blow up in a supernova. Previously, it was unclear whether magnetars form in this way, from the explosion of two merged stars, or whether they might form when a single star explodes.
"The immense power output of magnetars makes them some of the most fascinating and extreme objects in the universe," says Kritti Sharma, lead author of the new study and a graduate student working with Vikram Ravi, an assistant professor of astronomy at Caltech. "Very little is known about what causes the formation of magnetars upon the death of massive stars. Our work helps to answer this question."
The project began with a search for FRBs using the Deep Synoptic Array-110 (DSA-110), a Caltech project funded by the National Science Foundation and based at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory near Bishop, California. To date, the sprawling radio array has detected and localized 70 FRBs to their specific galaxy of origin (only 23 other FRBs have been localized by other telescopes). In the current study, the researchers analyzed 30 of these localized FRBs.
"DSA-110 has more than doubled the number of FRBs with known host galaxies," says Ravi. "This is what we built the array to do."
Although FRBs are known to occur in galaxies that are actively forming stars, the team, to its surprise, found that the FRBs tend to occur more often in massive star-forming galaxies than low-mass star-forming galaxies. This alone was interesting because the astronomers had previously thought that FRBs were going off in all types of active galaxies.
With this new information, the team started to ponder what the results revealed about FRBs. Massive galaxies tend to be metal-rich because the metals in our universe—elements that are manufactured by stars—take time to build up over the course of cosmic history. The fact that FRBs are more common in these metal-rich galaxies implies that the source of FRBs, magnetars, are also more common to these types of galaxies.
Stars that are rich in metals—which in astronomical terms means elements heavier than hydrogen and helium—tend to grow larger than other stars. "Over time, as galaxies grow, successive generations of stars enrich galaxies with metals as they evolve and die," Ravi says.
What is more, massive stars that explode in supernovae and can become magnetars are more commonly found in pairs. In fact, 84 percent of massive stars are binaries. So, when one massive star in a binary is puffed up due to extra metal content, its excess material gets yanked over to its partner star, which facilitates the ultimate merger of the two stars. These merged stars would have a greater combined magnetic field than that of a single star.
"A star with more metal content puffs up, drives mass transfer, culminating in a merger, thus forming an even more massive star with a total magnetic field greater than what the individual star would have had," Sharma explains.
In summary, since FRBs are preferentially observed in massive and metal-rich star-forming galaxies, then magnetars (which are thought to trigger FRBs) are probably also forming in metal-rich environments conducive to the merging of two stars. The results therefore hint that magnetars across the universe originate from the remnants of stellar mergers.
In the future, the team hopes to hunt down more FRBs and their places of origin using DSA-110, and eventually the DSA-2000, an even bigger radio array planned to be built in the Nevada desert and completed in 2028.
"This result is a milestone for the whole DSA team. A lot of the authors on this paper helped build the DSA-110," Ravi says. "And the fact that the DSA-110 is so good at localizing FRBs bodes well for the success of DSA-2000."
IMAGE ; This photo montage shows the antennas of the Deep Synoptic Array-110, which are used to discover and pinpoint the locations of fast radio bursts (FRBs). Above the antennas are images of some of the FRB host galaxies as they appear on the sky. The galaxies are remarkably large, challenging models that describe FRB sources. Credit Annie Mejia/Caltech

Using additive manufacturing to detect counterfeit parts
Ensuring manufactured goods and components have not been copied and replaced illegally by counterfeited goods is a high-priority concern of the manufacturing and defense industries in the U.S. and around the world.
A potential solution would hold wide-reaching impacts and implications in various areas ranging from enhancing biomedical implants to protecting national defense assets.
Texas A&M University researchers have developed a method of imprinting a hidden magnetic tag, encoded with authentication information, within manufactured hardware during the part fabrication process. The revolutionary process holds the potential to expose counterfeit goods more easily by replacing physical tags—such as barcodes or quick response (QR) codes—with these hidden magnetic tags, which serve as permanent and unique identifiers.
The project, titled "Embedded Information in Additively Manufactured Metals via Composition Gradients for Anti-Counterfeiting and Supply Chain Traceability," is a faculty partner project supported by the SecureAmerica Institute. It includes researchers from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the J. Mike Walker '66 Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M.
