With this past Tuesday being Jay-Z's birthday (Happy Belated HOV Day to all who celebrate 💎), I figured no time is better than this week to chat about my choice to make J's Magna Carta Holy Grail album "Hidden Figures"'s running musical inspiration .

.

The idea came to me when "Holy Grail" happened to pop on while I started drafting my first blog post for the series where, in a raw emotional state - as I tried to figure out how I was going to put my views and experiences about my Seattle existence into words - my longing yet conflicted feelings were underscored by the early lyrics of the song:

"...And, baby, it's amazin' I'm in this maze with you I just can't crack your code One day, you're screamin' you love me loud The next day, you're so cold One day, you're here (Yeah), one day, you're there (Yeah) One day, you care (Yeah), you're so unfair "

.

The words seemed to sing what I felt about living as a transplant in this city where it seemed I just couldn't find my way into it; I couldn't find where I belonged. And when I felt like I may have, the feeling wouldn't seem to stick or last.

But as the song continued, I found myself encouraged - as I am at every listen - by Jay's second verse where, after reflecting on the things that drive him crazy about the position he's found himself in thanks to fame, he steps out of the frustration to remind himself how far he's come and who he is despite those things following him:

"Why you mad? Take the good with the bad Or throw the baby out with that bath water You're still alive, still that nigga Nigga, you survived, still gettin' bigger"

.

The song seemed to ride the same emotional waves I found myself on as I looked to explain how "Hidden Figures" came to be: Confusion, hurt, disappointment...but then reflection, resolve and eventually emboldened acceptance and a doubling down on who I know I am. Despite the tougher feelings I found myself working through as I sought to talk about the project and what its concept was born from, I had to remember that - even in the face of those feelings - I've learned so much about myself, my values, what genuine relationships mean to me and have accomplished many things I could be proud of in this city...

Originally I only planned to introduce the first figure set with "Holy Grail", but as I continued listening to the album while I typed away, I heard more and more themes that reflected the things I wanted the piece to speak to: Being a Black figure existing under the White Gaze ("Oceans", "F.U.T.W", "Somewhereinamerica"), knowing my worth ("Picasso Baby", "fuckwithmeyouknowigotit")...each figure had its own theme so it only made sense for each figure to be presented with its own theme song.

Along with the album speaking to similar themes to Hidden Figures, it also seemed fitting that one of my most art-for-art's-sake works would be paired with what, I think, is one of the most artistic of Jay-Z's projects at the time MCHG was released (a view not everyone shares but, you know....). As a long time fan, the musical arrangements, the deep lyrics but also the quintessential rap boast tracks, the cover artwork, even Jay-Z's performance of Picasso Baby at the Pace Gallery - the album felt art house, a capsule of Jay being seen through a curated rap lens. And in the same vein, Hidden Figures is a capsule of all the feelings I've had as a transplant in Seattle delivered through a traditional Fine Art lens: No character or story to watch unfold - just a concept and (hopefully) moving and simple yet evocative shapes in a open space with something to say - a further engaging with and appreciation for the art form.

Magna Carta Holy Grail spoke what I didn't have the words to say and said everything I left out of the words I did have. And I guess at the same time, in a way, my use of the album is also my own little lover letter to and celebration of one of my favorite lyricists and rappers of all time whose music has held a place of honor in my life for a long time.

It's been 10 years and I still think of how they set Macklemore up with that Grammy win that year. The Heist was a good ass project and I'm running it back rn but putting that white man against Jay Z, Kanye, Drake, and Kendrick wasn't even fair.

Literally had him competing against Magna Carta Holy Grail (which is already unfair I mean look at the fucking tracklist lmao), Yeezus, Nothing Was The Same, AND good kid, m.A.A.d city.

It was stacked as hell I wouldn't even want the Grammy but I do wonder how things would've been different if they didn't give him the Grammy and throw him into the culture vulture category when The Heist is a fire ass storytelling album confronting themes like addiction, sobriety and alcoholism, poverty, inclusion, all kinda shit and each song is immersive like Ryan Lewis was in the studio with Macklemore going CRAZY on the horns, those background vocals, the beat selection itself is crazy idk how his mind even decided on some of those sounds or knew how to build the worlds he did with them. Ima always love the use of live instruments but pair that with someone tryna to chase their purpose to literally save their life, ima always be a fan.

If we ignore the existence of Thrift Shop, it's a no skip project 😭

One of my favorite songs

I am not sure exactly when I was introduced to this song, but it has had a chokehold on me ever since I found it. The song makes me feel a way that few others do. It makes me feel rich and important.

Jay-z de son vrai nom Shawn Corey Carter, est l'un des rappeurs les plus reconnus de la scène du rap américain. Il voit le jour le 4 décembre 1969 �� New York.Il va grandir avec ses trois frères et sa sœur dans les bas-fonds new yorkais. Son père ayant déserté le foyer conjugal, sa mère va élever seule ses cinq enfants. Toute la famille vit dans la pauvreté et à l’adolescence le jeune garçon se lance dans le trafic de drogue afin de survivre. Lors de ses années au collège il va rencontrer de futurs rappeurs : AZ, Notorious B.I.G. Mais à 20 ans, il décide de tour arrêter pour se lancer dans la musique. Grâce à l’aide de Notorious B.I.G et de Puff Daddy, il se lance dans la musique. Il fonde, en 1996, avec Damon Dash sa société de production : Roc-A-Fella. La même année il sort son premier opus Reasonable Doubt, qui cartonne aussi bien auprès du public que des critiques musicales. Il va même être certifié disque de platine. Son disque suivant : In my Lifetime vol 1 est réalisé après l’assassinat de son ami Notorious B.I.G et Jay Z y dévoile son enfance difficile. C’est le premier d’une trilogie : Hard Knock Life (1998) et Life and Times of S.Carter (1999). Le volume 2 est un énorme succès et lui permet de remporter son premier Grammy Award. C’est le début d’une longue réussite pour le rappeur. Chaque sortie d’album est un événement et il accumule les prix et les ventes. Mais surprise, en 2003, il annonce que The Black Album est son dernier disque et qu’il se retire de la scène. En 2005, son label est racheté par Def Jam et il est nommé président de la nouvelle entité. Finalement il quitte sa retraite musicale et sort en novembre 2006 : Kingdom Come et c’est un nouveau succès. Par la suite il quitte Def Jam et fonde Roc Nation, son nouveau label et produit ses albums suivants. Magna Carta Holy Grail son dernier album sort en 2013. Tout au long de sa carrière, il a reçu de nombreux prix. Parallèlement à sa carrière musicale, Jay Z est à la tête d’un empire financier colossal. Il investit dans dans la musique, le monde de la nuit, le sport, la mode. Il est copropriétaire d’une équipe de basket, propriétaire de la chaîne de restaurant 40/40 et a investi dans une marque de champagne… Le magazine Forbes le classe régulièrement dans les rappeurs les plus riches. Jay Z épouse Beyonc�� en avril 2008, après six ans d’amour. Le couple donne naissance à leur fille Blue Ivy le 7 janvier 2012. Le 1er février 2017, Beyoncé annonce sur son compte Instagram être enceinte de jumeaux. Le 12 juin 2017, elle donne naissance à ses jumeaux, un garçon et une fille : Rumi et Sir. Homme d'affaires accompli, Jay-Z a monté sa propre ligne de vêtements, Rocawear. Il est aussi copropriétaire d’une équipe de basket. En 2013, il fait la Une du "Time Magazine" qui le cite comme l’une des 100 personnes les plus influentes du monde.
