Me, upon having discovered I misheard "Core Set" as "Corset" and am not getting a sl*tty shinobi in my card game:

I just found out about Magic the Gathering Foundations and THANK YOU, WOTC.

Last year I got the 2023 Starter Kit to get my husband to learn at least the basics so that we could maybe buy a random preconstructed deck every now and then and play some games.

Well, I mean... the decks were certainly cool, but they weren't at all for people willing to learn how to play and get into the game, in my opinion. Maybe for people wanting to get back into the game, definitely not "the best way to learn to play" as it says on the box.

For someone who has at least played the game a dozen times and understands the basics, the decks are not that hard to grasp, but for someone who is diving into the game and the cards for the first time, especially if they're not into this kind of nerdy exactly-worded card games, "Sarkhan, Soul Aflame" is just a chunk of text. "Goddric, Cloaked Reveler" is so flavorful and cool, but it's a wall of text you have to read and reread and keep track of just to understand what he does. "Silverback Elder"? So awesome, but again, requires reading, understanding and remembering. It's supposed to be fun and they're already trying to understand phases, types of cards, combat damage and basic keywords; if you add so many chunks of text, the fun is nowhere to be seen.

Now I don't want to get too excited, but I look at what this Foundations seem to be aiming for and I can't help but smile. "Llanowar Elves", ok, taps for mana to play cards sooner. "Omniscience"? Oh, so expensive, but now I don't have to tap lands to play cards, cool. "Nine-Lives Familiar", so much text... ah, you put eight counters on it, those are its lives, and every time it dies it comes back with one less counter.

I mean, I don't think new players are stupid, but there are a lot of people out there who think the cards are cool but the game is hard. Explaining or trying to understand all the basics but also Backup, Convoke, Celebration, Unearth, Skulk... Yeah, it's not going to work.

I'm so looking forward this Foundations thing, thanks, Wizards :)

Maro’s Foundations Teaser

Before previews for Foundations officially begin, I thought it would be fun to do another of my Duelist-style teasers where I give tiny hints of things to come. Note that I’m only giving you partial information.  

 First up, here are some things you can expect:  

• The five iconic creatures each show up on multiple cards

• Two monocolor reprints, each of a different color, that together win you the game.

• Some creature tokens in this set: 1/1 white Rabbit, 2/1 blue Ninja, 3/3 Green Raccoon, 4/4 red Dragon, and a copy that’s a Nightmare

• A character from one of our most popular online Magic stories returns

• An 8/12 creature with ward 4

• A creature with seven evergreen keywords

• A Magic Invitational winner’s card gets reprinted (and no, not the most powerful one)

• Counters in the set: +1/+1, bait, fellowship, incubation, loyalty, revival, soul, stash, and stun

• A card that’s in the top 10 cards I sign gets reprinted

• More deciduous mechanics get used in this set than any previous (non-Time Spiral block) premier set

 Next, here are some rules text that will be showing up on cards:  

• “This spell costs {1} less to cast for each Cat you control.”

• “You can’t lose the game and your opponents can’t win the game.”

• “target instant or sorcery card in your graveyard gains flashback until end of turn.”

• “Creatures you control get +10/+10”

• “A deck can have any number of cards named”

• “Then exile all other Nightmare tokens you control.”

• “Whenever you draw your second card each turn, create a token that’s a copy of this creature.”

• “Double the number of each kind of counter”

• “You may pay {B} rather than pay this spell’s mana cost if there are thirteen or more creatures on the battlefield.”

• “Draw a card for each different mana value among nonland permanents you control.”

Something that amuses me between knitters and crocheters is this... almost humble nature each craft has about the other. I couldn't imagine how one would knit, and I know some of the basics - and yet, I have met so many knitters who say crochet is impossible, and yet I find it to be so simple. Types that have gone 10-14 years without print are Silver (Worldwake - Khans of Tarkir)

Types that have gone 15-19 years without print are Gold (Betrayers of Kamigawa - Zendikar)

Types that have gone 20+ years without print are Cadaverrific (older then Champions of Kamigawa)

Other than the reprint of a Planechase plane card, Foundations is the first time "Shenmeng" has been printed on a card. It used to be known as The Plane of Mountains and Seas and is where Mu Yanling and Jiang Yanngu (and Mowu!) are from.

i hate the varric twist so much because you’re really telling me that rook never offhandly referred to varric in the present tense at all?? that rook just straight up believed varric was alive and in the lighthouse but acted like varric didn’t exist?

also it makes harding seem like she barely cared about varric. she’s known him for ten years, you’d think she’d be more messy from his death and also not act like he’s never existed

remember when i said “consider if asks you send me are just posts that could stand on their own and don’t require my input at all” and also “it’s annoying to send me unsolicited veilguard criticism about something i wasn’t even talking about as if i, a stranger who happens to like the game, have to personally deal with being an anonymous outlet for all your problems with it”? this is like the textbook example of that if anyone was wondering
