Reasons why Microsoft Office slows down
Microsoft Office can end up running slowly because of one, or even all, of the following:
Office files get corrupted and the application runs slowly as a result.
A buildup of temporary files can cause a slowdown.
Microsoft Office has not been updated. Updates can speed up the application.
Documents that have DOC or DOCM extensions might be storing macros, which can lead to delays when opening documents.
Lack of hardware resources on the device.
Uninstall and re-install Microsoft Office
As detailed in this article, one of the best methods to speed up Microsoft Office is to reinstall it, a process which will overwrite corrupted elements and/or replace any missing files. Fully deleting the app is important to create a fresh environment for the reinstallation.

Manually delete temporary files

Microsoft and friends crash us again...
In the late 90's when we started to see a large rise in MS Office macro viruses I wrote an article (whilst running the APAC Norton AntVirus RD facility) warning about the dangers of a monoculture.
I suggested, in fact said, that if we came to rely on Microsoft products to the exclusion of all others we'd run into serious problems when we became fully reliant on technology.
This has come true, in fact it's been true for at least ten years as the incumbent vendors competitors have been squeezed out of business.
It's the job of governments to protect a countries infrastructure, we will never sell our roads and railways to the overseas owned private sector (well I hope not) so why have they 'sold' the information super highway as we used to call it.
Lack of regulation and protection in the market and a failure to understand how the global Information age works is now today causing chaos across the UK.
Luckily, well no by good planning, non of my business interests or the car club rely on Microsoft products; we've always had a diversified IT strategy.
