NORFOLK, Va. – Maury High School junior Kaiden London believes an entire course on the contributions and culture of Black people would be beneficial for everyone.

“I think it’s important to know,” London said. “It’s also part of my background.”

An elective course in the works for high school students on African American Studies, however, is now under scrutiny by the state of Virginia. Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-Va.) has called on state education leaders to review the AP course after concerns over the curriculum.

“Calling a review on it is just nonsense because to me, it just feels like he’s trying to erase our history,” said Norfolk City Public Schools parent Ashley Harris.

Youngkin’s office said his administration wants to make sure the curriculum falls in line with his state policy dealing with race.

In a statement, Youngkin’s spokeswoman, Macaulay Porter said, "After numerous reports about draft course content, the governor asked the Education Secretariat to review the College Board’s proposed AP African American Studies course as it pertains to Executive Order 1."

That order bans “inherently divisive concepts” including critical race theory (CRT) in all schools.

The Virginia NAACP education chair and others in the civil rights group are angered by the move.

“We see the erasure of Black history in any school – public or private but especially public schools – as an affront,” said Virginia NAACP Education Chair Dr. Amy Tillerson-Brown.

The Virginia NAACP said the governor’s call to review the AP course is an attempt to erase certain parts of history and Democracy, adding doing that can be dangerous.

“We see it as anti-Democratic,” Tillerson-Brown said. “When you only give one point of view, then you don’t allow people to choose and to think critically about the history that is our American history.”

Ashley Harris,whose daughter is a junior at Maury High School believes the AP African American Studies course should include all aspects of history even the painful parts.

“It’s still part of our history in this country so trying to take that away from the knowledge of the children is not a good thing because it’s almost like it’s one sided,” Harris said.

The state review comes after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis questioned the course’s curriculum.

Last month, the College Board, which drafted the curriculum, said it was accused of “downgrading” some historical topics, including the Black Lives Matter movement.

Gov. Youngkin does not have the authority to ban the AP course. The governor’s office said it’s the local school districts not the Department of Education that decides what AP courses they want to teach.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) has asked his education secretary for a review of the Advance Placement (AP) African American studies course that has made headlines since it was rejected in Florida by the administration of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).

The AP African American course will be reviewed to ensure it complies with Youngkin’s Executive Order 1 that he signed at the beginning of 2022, according to a spokesperson.

“After numerous reports about draft course content, the governor asked the Education Secretariat to review the College Board’s proposed AP African American Studies course as it pertains to Executive Order 1,” spokesperson Macaulay Porter said in a statement to The Hill on Thursday.

The executive order under which Youngkin wants the course reviewed bans critical race theory — an academic framework about systemic racism in American institutions that is used at collegiate levels and has become a catch-all political buzzword for race-related discussion in classrooms — in Virginia and aims to “end the use of inherently divisive concepts.”

It is unknown whether the results of this review could impact if the course is available in Virginia schools.

The involvement of state governments in whether an AP course can be offered in schools varies by state. In Virginia, local schools decide what AP courses are on tap.

Youngkin’s review comes a month after DeSantis attacked the College Board and the AP class, with his administration saying the course had “no educational value.”

the new season of ahs is just SO good, worth waiting for 2 years! ughhhh i’m so hyped.. also sad coz i don’t have anyone to talk about it T___T none of my friends watches it.... 

i love double feature so far for its themes on artistic blocks and longing for greatness and doing anything for it. finn wittrock is amazing as ever. so is lily rabe. sarah paulson’s character is both sad and comedic (in a dark way) and she’s does great job but it didn’t surprise anyone lol :D also LOOOVE macaulay culkin, he should be new regular. (or is this last season???) frances conroy & evan peters... they both have interesting roles (i wanna be like belle noir in my sixties). i really wait to see more about the characters of adina porter, billie lourd and denis o’hare.

i guess alma is going to be the most psychopathic chacter of red tide...

Me watching Red Tide:

Okay, this is really good.

The fact that the show decided to take it into the meta level makes this even more good.

This season is legit terrifying! While I love Hotel (given there's a lot of similiraties), I think so far Red Tide has portrayed a better metaphor for addiction than Hotel did.

And the cinematography! It's so good. The environnements, the shots, the lightning. Okay, Murphy and Falchuk you got me excited.

I really wonder what Death Valley is going to be like is going to be like. Is it gonna be a story inside the story ? To make even more meta than it already is ?
