Just some food headcanons that have been "stewing" in my head for our Friendly Neighborhood Wholesoome Sidekick!

-As an Earth Realm Protector, Tomas had been billeted by different hosts from all over our world during various missions that take place in different parts of the world.

-Tomas is always appreciative of homecooked meals prepared by his billet hosts because he understands that it takes valuable resources, time and effort, especially if it is evident that the billet family is poor. There’s nothing more delicious than a homecooked meal made with love.

-He eats a lot of vegetables and loves them! Tomas appreciates vegetables prepared in different ways: salads, roasted vegetables, pureed as a soup, battered and fried, as snacks, you name it. Authentic Mexican tortillas and nachos with a lot of salsa with juicy chunks of tomatoes, bring on the vitamin C!

-Tomas also eats a lot of fruits, his favourite ones being apples, oranges, grapes, stone fruits, pineapple, mangoes, and any fruits that are both sweet and tart, especially if crunchy. He doesn’t mind bananas, melons, berries and local fruits from different countries and will eat them when offered.

-Tomas doesn’t mind smoothies, but doesn’t normally consume this, since they weren’t available during his time in the Lin Kuei, and currently in the Shirai Ryu.

-Tomas’ favorite thing to eat is stew. It reminds him of his childhood days as a hunter, as his mother often cooked stews for him and his sister. Got a pot roast in the slow cooker, he’s game! Make sure that there are a ton of veggies in that Crockpot, and he’ll appreciate that. Happen to have a large Dutch oven of Osso Bucco in the oven, he’s inwardly drooling and counting the minutes until he can get his mitts on a bowlful of that tender beef shank on top of creamy polenta and topped with gremolata! Got some chicken or pork adobo and rice, he’ll take seconds! Got a big bowl of Caldo de Res (yes, I know it’s a soup), it’s gone in no time. In a mood for some comfort food, he’ll gladly accept a bowl of scouse made with lamb. Got butter chicken on coconut rice, yes, please! :D

-If a billet host can or is well off, Tomas loves being treated to different restaurants. If a billet host has recommendations and is enthusiastic to take him to a popular spot, Tomas is always happy and appreciative to go with. From a popular hole-in-a-wall noodle shop to a lively gastropub on a game night to a Michelin Star restaurant in an upscale part of downtown, he loves being exposed to different culinary experiences. Tomas always has a great time bonding with his billet families this way, and they always enjoy hearing about his stories and adventures.

-Tomas won’t eat anything that isn’t well-cooked or under cooked, not out of rudeness but for his own safety. If there is anything that is pungent in a bad way, he’ll try it once in small quantities, but that’s it. If an animal that is being butchered is illegally acquired and slaughtered in an inhumane way, Tomas wants nothing to do with it.

-It only takes only a few occurrences for Tomas to learn to have a sack of snacks or MRE’s, courtesy of Johnny Cage’s connection with the US army.

-Just because Tomas must keep a certain physique doesn’t mean that he can’t enjoy any foods and beverages that are “less” healthy. Having been to different parts of the world has made him acquainted to the popular fun foods. If he’s in Canada, he must have some poutine with those squeaky cheese curds! If he’s in the Southern US, bring on the fried chicken with biscuits and gravy! If he’s in a Southeast Asian country, the street food offers a ton of options: try the fish balls on sticks, various fresh seafood cooked fresh, and shaved ice desserts, to name a few! If he’s in the Middle East or in the Balkan region, Baklava is a must!

-Tomas can generally hold his liquor and knows his limits. His alcoholic beverage of choice is beer, specifically the beloved pilsner. It must be the Czech in him or the fact that men can generally metabolize alcohol faster, or both, that he’s able to put away a lot of beer. In fact, Tomas is one of the few that can out drink most of the Earth Realm protectors.

-If Tomas is offered wine or Prosecco with some dinners, he will accept 2-3 glasses. He rarely drinks hard liquor, but if with a culture where it is customary and polite to accept a drink from a billet host, he will. He’s had quite a few tequila shots in his life.

-At one point, Tomas had been curious about Jello Shots at one point. Tomas enjoys them if he’s with younger members of billet families that offer them, especially when he can enjoy the more adventurous drinks like Sex on a Beach, Long Island, AMF (Ooof!), Ceasar, and other creative concoctions with no names. Tomas has also taken a liking to Baileys, by itself or in hot chocolate.

-Tomas has a sweet tooth. Ice cream, gelato, and popsicles are consumed in large quantities. He likes mini fruit tarts and cakes in general, especially Japanese sponge cakes with strawberries and light whipped icing. Anything matcha will always be welcomed, be it as tea, in cakes, ice creams, and anything creatively sweet.

-Tomas loves chocolate bars and protein bars. He also loves cookies and Nutella on fresh bannock. Have options of snacks in a basket, and that completes his billeting experience with you :D

How many of the indigenous people native to their home are they going to support, especially if they decide to go the route of Hamas in this current day and age? Most likely, none because then that would be a war real to them. They wouldn’t be able to act as a wannabe proxy that thrives on guilting people for having thoughts that don’t revolve around this war 100% of the time. They want so badly to live by “an eye for an eye” rules until it’s their eye on the line.

Why when Russia invaded Ukraine everyone said it’s Putin’s fault yet now they can’t separate the Israeli government from the people? Despite many Israelis not even liking the current Prime Minister. (We know the answer. There’s Jews involved.)

Instead of actually listening to the people suffering directly from this war and encouraging actual solutions, they’re online telling Palestinians, who are starving and dying of malnutrition, to not eat the humanitarian aid because it’s “expired.” (MREs don’t expire. The have either packing or inspection dates and only an inspector can declare them not fit for consumption.)

They’re online yelling at Jews for wanting their family back after October 7. They’re even online posting, whether knowingly or not, “from river to sea” like that’s not directly spouting hate speech claimed by Hamas.

Both the leaders of the Gazan Strip and The Israeli government have done some horrible things in this war, but they latch onto to any accusation about Israel, whether true or false, like the South Park song “Blame Canada.”

So, today I reblogged someone with "Jewish" as part of their user name, and I did not add anything to their post. This person was saying "You can be Pro-Israel AND Pro-Palestine because it's about human beings, not little dolls for you to play with." And, I thought this was a very succient way to explain the issue.

Literally not five minutes later, someone reblogged my reblog to argue that it isn't antisemitic to be against Israel because Israel is on land that should belong to Palestine.

Keep in mind: The person I reblogged from was NOT saying a fucking thing except that Israel and Palestine both have a right to exist. In fact, I have made at least a few posts from this here blog making the exact same point. That both countries have a right to exist.

But no one's ever tried to ride my ass on me saying that.

And yet, I reblog a person who clearly identifies as Jewish, and suddenly, oh, someone's got THOUGHTS. Antisemitic thoughts. Because the actual OP said Israel and Palestine have a right to exist, and this person turned it into "You're fine with Israel occupying territory that isn't theirs" which is literally NOT what was being said.

I blocked the person instantly because that's what I do when bigots show up in my feed. I wish I hadn't though. I wish I'd paused just long enough to reblog and point out how fucking antisemitic it is to see "Israel has a right to exist" and immediately turn it into how Israel as an idea and a country are untrustworthy and dangerous.

But I didn't. And OP turned off their reblogs, so I can't reblog the post and add this to it. But I'm adding it here. Because if you see someone say "Israel has a right to exist" and someone else immediately go into a whole little rant about how no, it doesn't, one of these people is a fucking bigot. And it's the fucker who said Israel shouldn't be allowed to exist.

Food concepts #1 - Vintage 1945 military ration

In the past few years, I have realised how important dining experiences actually are and how many of them have I not tried out yet - there's food trucks, fine dining, pre-prepared store bought meals, home cooking and many more. However, there also tend to be new trends emerging in the past few years. One of the more interesting ones are liquified meal replacements (Soylent, Mana) and MREs. I've find the former quite interesting, although I still object the whole idea of drinking a bottle of what tastes like mixed oats instead of eating food in its solid form. I guess it's the feeling of completeness and I am also pretty sure that body absorbs more macronutrients from eating actual solid food as opposed to drinking it.

Anyways, about two months ago, I started watching a youtube MRE channel called 'Steve1989MREInfo' - a guy from Florida who reviews and tastes both new (fresh) and old MREs. Now for those who don't know, MRE stands for 'meal ready to eat'; a self-contained and pre-packaged field ration primarily used by military troops. For the sake of clarity, I will use the term 'field ration' and 'MRE' interchangeably, although I understand the slight difference between the two. MRE's became kind of a phenomenon, especially on youtube where many youtubers, whatever their content is, haeve decided to try out an MRE and eat it on camera. I honestly enjoy watching these and I am glad to have found Steve and his videos, as he opens some very interesting rations (I have put his channel on the bottom of this post)

I have first ordered an old MRE, a Canadian Navy Survival Ration from 1945 and I certainly don't plan on ever eating it, not because I would be scared, but because I don't ever want to open the box and I plan on keeping it just for display. I've then decided to order an MRE that I can actually eat and ordered a US MRE, that I will write about later.

I have ordered this ration about a month ago for $50 from the US after watching most of Steve's youtube videos. I was fascinated by how well the food is preserved and that some of it is actually edible. What is however both amazing and quite depressive about this ration is that for many, it was probably the last meal.

According to Steve, many returning soldiers described this ration as awful. I reckon that being hungry and only having milk tablets is enough of a reason for that. However, I find it awesome that W. Clark Ltd. and many other ration producers managed to fit such a large amount of calories into such a small box, while keeping the variety interesting. I unfortunately do not have the exact calorie count for the individual components (for some reason, they decided to not print it on the packagings) but my guess would be anything around 600 to 900 kcal. That in general doesn't sound as much; I for example could definitely not function on a day to day basis with just under 1000 kcal a day. It is, however, important to note that given it is a navy survival ration, it was probably designated to be eaten on a life raft, where you wouldn't burn as many calories as you would by walking/running or doing any other physical activity.

Also, the most common rule with these tiny survival rations was to not eat anything for the first 24 hours to give your stomach some time to shrink, which in return would make the soldier less hungry after eating the portion he himself has rationed. Now this is where it gets interesting and what I've wondered a lot about: how does one ration the portions without actually knowing when someone will actually arrive or pass by to rescue him. Well, given that I've established the calorie count to be around 600-900 kcal (I've tried to count calories of some existing similar tablets and biscuits, but it could of course be wrong), I can imagine surviving on as low as around 200-300 kcal a day, meaning that this could last me for 2-3 days. I understand that people can apparently survive without food for around 3 weeks but I also know that I wouldn't be able to resist eating at least a bit of it, knowing that it would make my time starving to death in the middle of the ocean way easier.

As stated earlier, I will most likely never open it for the sake of just displaying it, but I am happy someone on the internet did so (actually many people have opened it and eaten it on the youtube). Given that a yellow metal box got me excited this much, I can't wait to try an actual and fresh MRE soon.

The parish next to us has power, but since we are right ON the parish line, we don’t. (The parish we are in has a floodgate that they close. if you live behind the gate, and they close it, you cannot leave. They do that so the rest of the parish doesn’t flood. We thankfully live on the other side of the gate. Right next to it. lol) But since the other side flooded, 5/6 feet btw, we won’t have power until they are good. BUT I am enternally grateful that there are people from all over coming to help us. We have power companies from CANADA who came down! The only bad part about it is the workers who did come…they have to sleep in their trucks because there’s no where to stay..it’s so heartbreaking and i wish i could help them all. I hope they can get it soon, I want them to be able to go home and sleep in their bed, in their ac.

i'm nonbinary and people keep asking me about the gender neutral form of sir/ma'am and i don't know how to answer them because i don't know about any gender neutral honorifics ? do they exist ? if so , what are they ?

An honorific is a title that is placed before a person’s name either to explain their rank, role, marital status, or assumed gender. You may also know your honorific under the term “suffix”. There are multiple honorifics and titles for individuals which are gender neutral linguistically. The most common honorific is the term ‘Mx.’ [said like ‘mix’]. The x acts as a wild card, taking the usual title format of Mr and Ms, and putting in an x to remove the gender in the title. This honorific has been legally recognized by several businesses, countries, and other associations but is primarily only seen on actual paperwork in the U.K. as of this moment. Places such as Canada, Washington, California, and Oregon will likely eventually follow as they all also work towards legal recognition of nonbinary trans people. However, we are still a good ways away from ‘Mx’ being listed as an option everywhere.(Much less other nonbinary honorifics!) Other honorifics include: Ind., Rev., Dr., M., Misc., Mre., Msr., Myr., Pr., or Mn..

The binary-gendered honorifics we currently use are ‘Mr.’, ‘Mrs.’, ‘Ms.’, or ‘Miss’. ‘Miss’ is often used in a similar way to ‘Ma’am’ despite doubling as an honorific, and ‘Mister’ is often used in a way similar to ‘Sir’ even though ‘Ma’am’ and ‘Sir’ are not honorifics. There is linguistic precedent to using a word that doubles as an honorific in ways similar to ‘Ma’am’ or ‘Sir’. This is why — although it is far from perfect — I believe the best and most recognized solution to this question for the time being is to use the honorific ‘Mx’ in this fashion as well. I had to think about this question for nearly a month to reach what I really believe linguistically felt the most right, as well as what would the community for the most part agree upon and be comfortable with, and this is what I believe the solution to be.
