nobody:
absolutely nobody:
me: so the kragdu break up in vol 2 literally happened because kraglin's the stepdad who always felt like he had to compete with the kid and he was just sick of it and he has a really interesting fraught but loving relationship with peter that's sort of fatherly and sort of weird-uncle-y, where they both really care about each other but struggle to define it. whereas yondu laid eyes on that kid and was like. full momma-duck mode. I am a parent now. I am going to do an absolutely AWFUL job of this because I have processed precisely 0 of my trauma and I think hitting a kid to teach him how to fight and keeping him in fear by threatening to eat him at every opportunity is what Good Pirate Parenting looks like because hey, it's better than selling your baby into slavery, right!!!! :DDDD and the two of them are trying to keep this fragile sack of human (or... potentially...... HALF GOD) flesh alive and THE FUCK AWAY from his Evil Child-Murdering Sperm Donor while pretending they just fucking kidnapped him on. a literal whim. for the funsies (and to stop him chasing down the truth, but where Yondu 'babytalks as a really weird power move' Udonta's involved, let's be honest.... it's mostly for the funsies). All while babysitting their ultraviolent gang of leather-clad space-biker-pirates who will MUTINY AND SLAUGHTER ALL OF THEM if they show Peter any overt affection or favouritism. meanwhile Peter LITERALLY JUST LOST HIS MOM and was KIDNAPPED UNDER EXTREMELY TRAUMATIC CIRCUMSTANCES FROM HIS HOME PLANET AND HIS WHOLE FAMILY. Sure, he's an excited and adventurous kid by nature who loooooves space and exploring new worlds (what kid DOESN'T want to be a space pirate???) but the realities of Ravagering are rough and bloody even if they're sometimes fun. He's desperately trying to keep hold of the little boy his mom loved, the boy who got beat up by the bullies at the river trying to protect a helpless little frog. Trying to preserve something of her - of himself - through a lifeline of seventies/eighties bops. And against all the odds, IT WORKS! Peter finally flies the nest, goes his own way and gets his own crew, and hasn't absorbed that cycle of abuse!! he is a GOOD DAD to groot!!!! he is.... recovering from alcoholism and a WHOLE lot of grief, but in the end, he comes home to Earth, changed in so many ways, some for the worse but most for the better -
my beloved followers, living in 2024, with no idea what I'm talking about: okay

Tess didn't like seeing her mother that way, scared but trying to hide it, her thin shoulders curled in as she cried quietly into Yondu's chest, his arms around her and that face Tess knew was the one he wore when he was worried, anxious or scared.
She didn't like seeing him like that, not when she was used to him being the strongest person in the world in her eyes.
Sometimes Momma yelled, but it wasn't angry, it was tearful, she would put her hands up into her hair and cry about some kind of mistake she had made and Yondu would be right there telling her it wasn't true, then she was sob louder and cover her face, crying to him that she should have kept Peter away, but from who, Tess wasn't sure. Daddy didn't yell, at least not at Momma, and if he did he always looked shocked afterwards and she looked sad, but not for herself, Tess and Tala always hated it, Peter just would go quiet while Kraglin would try to pull them into the other room away from it, getting Peter to turn up his music loud until they were finished.
Tess knew something bad was getting worse, she just didn't know what.
She heard the echo of footsteps and quickly ducked behind the wall, knowing she probably shouldn't be listening and watching in on her parents, but she did worry about them, too.
"I saw you, kiddo." She winced at Martinex's calm voice. "come on out."
She slowly edged out and stood in front of her uncle, not sure if she should try and lie or not. Momma always told her to tell the truth when it was something like this.
He looked over and saw her parents a little bit away in the other room, and understanding flashed over his features before he reached down to scoop her up. "You spying?" he asked, but gave a little smirk to ease her.
"I... I didn't really wanna... I just, I dont like when Daddy's like that."
"Like what?"
"Like he's worryin' about something. He thinks something bad is gonna happen."
"Why would you say that?"
"I heard him tell Momma... he thinks someones gonna come for Peter, and then for me, and Tals and Krag... and that they'll hurt you and everyone else."
"Really shouldn't listen in on your dad, Tessie..."
"Im sorry."
"Its alright, just...lets try to let your parents have their conversations in private."
"But is it true? is someone really gonna hurt us?"
"No. No ones gonna hurt you."
"But why does Daddy tell you to take care of us and Momma if something happens to him?"
"How often are you hiding around the corner?"
She bit her lip. "Sorry."
He sighed and made a mental note to make sure these talks happened where they were sure not even Peter or the twins could find a way in. "Thats grown up stuff, and one day you'll understand, but I need you to trust your dad, and your mom and try not to worry about it. You guys are safe and your parents, and everyone else is gonna keep it that way."
She nodded, and he shifted her to his side. "Lets just promise no more spying, ok?"
"yeah."
"Good. Lets let them do what they need to work this out and find your siblings."
she grabbed onto the sleeve of his shoulder and put her chin over it, watching behind, she did believe they would do everything to protect her and her siblings, but that was also what scared her.

So all the feels from the movie and new flood of people...here's Peter sharing his music with his favorite space parent (just don't tell Yondu). Kraglin found a double head set that worked with Peter's Walkman, after all, if it keeps his baby happy then why not? It's not like Yondu isn't

Battle Slaves (1)
Warnings: language, violence and injury, slavery, death,
Yondu x reader
"You don't know nothin'." Aleta Ogord wasn't used to insubordination. She had come to know the Kree battle slave as one who would obey her, would help her lead, and would have the ability to talk sense into the most wayward of plans and people. She barely recognised the anger in xir eyes now, as xie stood before her, rage lacing through xir very blood.
"What'd ya say ta me?" Aleta Ogord didn't waste time with formality. It wasn't required in the Ravagers. Her First Mate folded xir arms and raised xir head again.
"Ya don' known nothin' 'bout Yondu Udonta." Xie turned on xir heel, not even looking back at xir Captain or Stakar when xie paused. "You two think ya know wha' he did. Think ya know why 'e did it. But if ya think 'e willingly delivered a child to 'er death, 'er suffering, 'er enslavement? Ya don't know nothin' 'bout Yondu Udonta." Xie was gone before her Captain could even think to reply, and all Aleta could do was thank God that xie had waited until they were alone to speak. She pushed Stakar's gun down as the ex-slave disappeared down the hall.
"Don't even think 'bout shootin' ma First Mate." Stakar huffed, but tucked his gun back into his belt anyway.
"Dabria." Xir comm blinked to life in the hallway, and xie flicked it on.
"Kraglin. Have ya got the Terran kid?" The comm crackled, distantly, and Kraglin's confirmation rustled through. "Good. He's our responsibility now. I'm sorry I'm not with ya but I've an allegiance to ma Captain and ma crew. I'd never betray that, even in the smallest way. Just know that I'll always be here for the boy if 'e needs it, and for y'all. I'll do anything I can to convince them of ya innocence, but i's goin' ta be long an' difficult."
"Thank ya, Dabria." Xir door slid open as xir touch found the biomesh pad, and xie sank down onto the bed.
"Take care of 'im, Kraglin. An' the boy. An' ya self. A crew is a family an' don't ya ever let 'em forget that." Xie silenced xir comm and lowered xir head into xir hands. Ravagers didn't cry. Kree battle slaves didn't cry. Xie'd not cried since xie'd been a child, xie didn't even remember how to. So xie kicked an offending jacket across the room, just as the door swung open again.
"Captain." Xie was on xir feet immediately, arm thumping to xir chest, as Aleta deflected the jacket.
"Dabria. Sit." She strolled in, as much in command of herself as her ship, and seated herself in the ragged armchair in the corner. "I know this is hard for ya, an' I canna express 'nuff gratitude for ya loyalty. I canna imagine having to choose between Stakar and my crew. But sometimes we have ta accept tha' the ones we love are wrong."
"I know 'e were wrong, bu' can ya honestly tell me that you an' Stakar ha' never made mistakes? Never broken the code?" Aleta frowned at the floor, her eyes glossed into reminiscence.
"Of course we've. But we don' deal in children. I thought you an' Yondu of all people would know why." Knife to heart. "Special' after Lila." And twist.
"P'raps, but I thought you an' Stakar woulda known why either of us would scoop up a child from the streets wi'out a pause ta deliver 'er to 'er father." The anger Dabria wanted to be in xir voice dissipated when Aleta's hand came down, gently, onto xir knee.
"But why'd 'e agree to the second job?" Aleta was begging xem for an explanation, just like xie begged Yondu.
"'Cause Ego gave it out wit' a gun ta Kraglin's head." And he hasn't handed the boy over. Because the boy wasn't safe on Terra anymore, even once Kraglin was safe. Because Ego knew exactly where he was, and if Yondu didn't take him, someone else would. Aleta sighed, shaking her head.
"I'm sorry, Ria, but they knew what they w're doin'." Yondu's issue was that he had too much heart, even for his brain. Xie smiled, sadly, as xir Captain stood.
"His crew ain't ma responsibility, Cap," xie answered, nodding, making Aleta pause in the doorway. "Yondu mighta been wrong, but I ain't gonna forgive Stakar for this. I know where I stand and why, but ma loyalty to ma crew an' Captain's somethin' tha'll no' waver."
Screaming echoed through xir comm, as it crackled to life, and xie jumped, tightening xir grip on the steering controls.
"The hell's 'appenin'?" It was a child. Lila flashed through xir mind, and disappeared.
"'e won't stop screamin'!" Yondu's voice burst through the comm, as his face popped up in a hologram. "I ain't done nuffin' an' he's convinced I'm gonna eat 'im!"
"Ah, fuck's sake, put tha kid on." The screaming grew louder as a wild-eyed, terrified child appeared in the image. "Hey, sweetie, wha's ya name?" Xir voice was calm, was quiet, just like it had been for Lila. The screaming stopped, but the tears didn't.
"Peter," the boy offered, looking up at xem. "Quill."
"Nice ta meetcha, Peter," xie soothed, kindly, "I'm Ria. S'that blue ass scarin' ya?" Xie could feel Yondu huffing at xem across the galaxy, but Peter nodded, the movement almost imperceptible.
"Said he was gonna eat me." The little box Peter clutched to his chest shifted as the boy shook, but Dabria just smiled.
"Y'ain't gotta worry 'bout tha', Peter." Xir grin widened, displaying a row of jagged but white teeth, only a few silver caps, but one was missing from the top right. "Yondu knows he'll answer ta me fa tha'." Peter giggled, quietly, his tears drying.
"Where 'r you?" he asked, poking a finger at the hologram.
"I'm on anov'a ship," xie answered, happily. "Now, ya lie down an' go ta sleep, kid. Ya've go' a lotta learn t'morrow."
"Will Momma sing me a lullaby?" Peter murmured, sleepily, the hologram shaking as he scrambled into a laying position, still clutching the box to his chest. Not a single word was said, on either side of the connection. Xie hadn't sung to anyone since the Kree dragged xem from xir home planet. The home planet whose name xie hadn't even known until xir appearance had rippled into a new one, and Aleta had breathed out "Skrull". But the song xie knew. Could only hope xir voice would sound alright.
"Not. One. Word." The boy's breathing had evened out, and he seemed to have slipped off, as xie finished, cutting off her comm. Yondu's breathy chuckle was the last thing xie heard.
"Was that the Terran child?" Xie'd heard Aleta enter – xie knew the footsteps of xir crew like the back of xir hand.
"Yes, Cap'n." Xie wouldn't lie to xir Captain. Couldn't. Had no reason to.
"I thought Yondu had already delivered him to Ego." The Captain's voice was cold, and Dabria didn't dare turn to face her.
"Yondu isn't delivering him to Ego. He only took the boy off Terra so that Ego wouldn't know where he was anymore." Xie turned this time, as Aleta sighed, sinking into her seat in the centre of the bridge. Why didn't he say that? Aleta's question didn't even have to leave her mouth before Dabria knew what it would be. The woman practically raised xem, they could almost read each other's minds.
"I don't recall him being given a chance to speak. He couldn't tell the trial that when his mouth was still gagged in the courtroom." Because of Stakar. Xie wouldn't say that. Aleta knows it's there without it touching the air.
"Yondu still took the jobs, and nothing will change that. But perhaps, one day, he can become a Ravager again. Until then, Dabria, your relationship with him, his crew, and the Terran boy will be yours to manage alone." You know not to let it interfere with your crew, don't you, child? Aleta didn't need to say it for Dabria to know what that meant. It was xir's alone, and if it got in the way of xir duties then xir position would no longer be xir's.
"Yes Cap'n."

More ragtag-messy-random big bro Kraglin headcanons, all set in the time Peter was little –
-          Peter latched onto Kraglin right from the start, and the Ravagers weren’t really sure if it was because Kraglin looked a bit like a Terran himself, or because he was one of the few who didn’t chime in on Captain’s “we’re gonna eat the Terran”-joke, but whatever the reason, Kraglin basically had a second shadow from the day on they picked Peter up.
 -          Kraglin really tried to pretend that the boy’s jumpiness and homesickness annoyed him, but he couldn’t really bring himself to be only annoyed, so he tried to take Peter’s mind away from it with sleight of hands or various adventure stories he came up with himself.
 -          After noticing how much Peter cared for his Walkman, Kraglin was the first one to go after one idiot who tried to snatch the device for himself. After coming back with a blue eye, he demanded to know – annoyed and pissed – why the thing was so important to Peter. All anger dissipates when he hears about Peter’s dead Momma, though, and he awkwardly pats the boy’s head because he can’t think of anything else to do
 -          Kraglin was the only one out of the Ravagers who didn’t hear Peter’s music through the ship's speakers when he heard it for the first time. He, alongside Yondu, was allowed to use Peter’s Walkman and headphones, even though he never understood how he got that honor.
-          Peter developed the habit of climbing up Kraglin’s lanky frame whenever he could, since the older was so strong he barely even registered the featherweight that the baby Terran was, and because Peter liked to feel tall and important up there on Kraglin’s shoulder
  -          Whenever Kraglin was working on something in silence, it was very likely that Peter would pop up over his shoulder and watch with big eyes and many questions “What are you doing?”, “What is it for?” or “Lemme try?!”
-          While it’s a common thing that the Ravagers sleep in puppy piles to share warmth in the cold of space, Peter would very often find a way to slip into Kraglin’s make-shift “bed” and cuddle close. When they were flying through a space storm and Kraglin was helping Yondu, Peter would either hide under Kraglin’s blanket or Kraglin would shoo him towards Captain’s room – “Ye know the code fer the door, Pete” – so that Peter had a safe place to stay.
-          Peter may have been a trouble maker and pull pranks on whoever angered him in any kind of way and everyone knew it, but what people didn’t expect was that Kraglin was Peter’s partner in crime more often than not, either because he chose to be or because Peter somehow sweet-talked him into it. Taserface doesn’t know till this very day who glued his pillow to his face with extra sticky glue, even though he had a notion that Kraglin’s dry comment “’S an improvement” and Peter’s hysterical cackling could be a hint.
 -          Peter liked to think that he helped with Kraglin’s physical training and exercises, for example by sitting on the older’s back while Kraglin was doing pushups and counting for him. Kraglin liked to complain about it, but he never removed Peter.
-          It was common that shit went down and Yondu looked at the both of them and asked “Who?” and both Kraglin and Peter point at each other like “His fault.” Yondu wasn’t even surprised about it anymore at one point.

Finding You, i
title subject to change. just needed something to post!
Summary: A long time ago, you lost a brother. Well, a step-brother. Nearly 30 years later, he shows up again. Turns out he’s...kind of famous now.
A/N: Getting through the first 100 pages of writing this took longer than I expected. With Arrow and Flame, I had a straight trajectory for the plot but with this I’m kind of going with curveballs as they come at me. Hopefully that turns out for the best! So far it’s kind of a slow burn and there is basically no Kraglin in this chapter and I apologize for that! He comes in soon though :D
Tags: (Let me know if you want to be tagged!) @fandommemporiumm, who suggested I try my hand at some Kraglin stuff :D
Words: 3,567
~~~
You watched New York fall on television. Your dad sat beside you the whole time, gasping whenever the big green guy leapt into the air. Your heart skipped a beat whenever Captain America brandished his shield, or when that small archer guy shot out at something. What was he even doing there, you wondered? Wasn’t he a human? No armor, no super serum, no gamma radiation...he just had a bow and a bunch of explosive arrows, and he was fighting among and against literal gods.
You watched as alien Elves, like something straight outta Tolkein or something, took Greenwich, ripping the city apart like it was made of puddy. That Norse God, the blond one, was back, but a lot of the footage was shaky and grainy. Then there was that Robot thing, made by Tony Stark that...wanted to kill Tony Stark, then The Winter Soldier ordeal and the rise of Hydra...that really didn't seem to be much of a rise at all, thanks to Captain America. Of course you watched the press conference about the Sokovia Accords. Everything was jumbled - it was one disaster after the next, one hero after another. So much death, destruction, and doom.
In Missouri, the fear ran deep. People were scared of things they didn't understand. Bomb shelters popped up, but now they were called Extraterrestrial Hindrance Locations, as if steel walls could keep out another Chitauri army.
But you? You had bigger things to deal with. Your dad passed before the Sokovia Accords came into play. The house, which was actually his late wife’s, was paid off but required a lot of upkeep. And it was lonely. So you stopped watching the news and dove into movies and sitcoms for a while, trying to keep yourself together while the world around you seemed to be falling apart.
And then Thanos came. You tried not to watch the streams and reports, but his power spread far and wide. Evacuations were put in order. People were dying, and whole cities fell. You couldn't tear yourself away, not even as you watched those brave heroes rush to try to save the world. Again. They’d somehow recruited more heroes, ones from far reaches of the Galaxy, people you’d never seen the likes of before.
But there was one. He had his mother's eyes, her smile. You didn't know it at first, as he gave some stupid interview or another. But then he used the name she’d given him, the name she died with just passed her tongue.
“I’m Star-Lord, Guardian of the Galaxy.”
Star-Lord.
You couldn't believe what you were seeing, what you heard. He was so grown up, but his face...it looked just like her. Before the tumor, before her incurable sickness took hold of all the light…and before her boy disappeared into the night.
“He went to space,” you said, kneeling off the couch. You went to the TV and reached out to touch his face. But he was on a screen, thousands of miles away, straight off of a harrowing fight. You knew they’d been lucky to get out alive.
You needed to get in touch with him. Somehow. You tried calling the local police, but they couldn't do anything from Missouri. You tried getting a ticket out to New York, where that interview had taken place, but you couldn't afford airfare. You thought about driving out there, but you'd never been to New York before. You didn't t know where he was or how to find him.
A few days after you saw him on TV, you realized how unrealistic your hope had been. Maybe it was just a coincidence - the galaxy had to be a lot bigger than that, right? That little boy was gone. He couldn't be a spaceman like his momma always insisted his daddy was.
But damn, he looked so much like her.
You remembered Meredith Quill so clearly. She married your dad a few months before they found the tumor, before the headaches and the nosebleeds started, before she stopped eating regularly, before the aggressive chemo took her hair and her energy. She was so kind. So beautiful. She was like sunshine.
But she was gone, and so was your dad and Peter, the little boy you’d grown so fond of before he’d disappeared. You prayed for years, hoping he was alive and healthy wherever he was. No one in Missouri saw him after Meredith died, and one by one, you watched her family leave or pass, and then your own.
You weren’t tied to the house and it’s high cost of upkeep, but it was where you’d grown up. It was where, weeks after the interview with Star-Lord, there was a knock on the door. It was more like slamming, and it woke you from a peaceful nap. You wondered how long the person had been knocking for them to be so savage about it as you headed downstairs, pulling on a green sweater on the way.
They slammed again and you furrowed your brows and called, “I’m comin’!” before skipping the rest of the way to the door.
You couldn’t believe your eyes. There he was. Star-Lord. “You,” you said, your eyes going wide, your mouth going wider.
“Hi,” he said tentatively, raising his eyebrows.
This close, he looked exactly like her. She always said he looked like his daddy, but Meredith was wrong. Beside the facial hair, he was her twin. There was no way you’d been wrong, and you were sure of it now.
“Peter,” you sighed.
He squished one eye into a questioning look and said, “Uh...do I know you?”
You looked him over, not even pretending to be subtle. You hadn’t seen this kid in almost thirty years. He was wearing clothes similar to what you remembered from the interview; red leather, a shirt with writing in some language you didn’t recognize, dark pants, and scuffed boots that looked too heavy to walk in.
“Peter Quill,” you said, finding his eyes searching yours for answers. “I haven’t seen you in...almost twenty-eight years.”
He watched you carefully, moving his hands from his back pocket to his waist. “And you are?” he asked.
“You don’t remember me,” you said, more a statement than a question. You looked down at your ratty lay-around jeans and the sweater you’d just thrown on. You knew you looked nothing like you had that night. It didn’t surprise you at all that he didn’t remember. “I know I ain’t a twelve-year-old girl anymore, but you really don’t remember?”
You caught his eyes again, but they showed no sign of recognition. You sighed and moved out of the way of the door. “Why don’t you come in?”
“A strange lady’s living in my mom’s ol’ house, knows my name, and wants me to willingly step into what can only be a trap,” he said. Then he shrugged and came in.
You shut the door and went to the couch by the TV. “It’s funny. I recognized you right away,” you said, sitting with one leg crossed over the other. You bent forward, put your elbow on your knee, and rested your chin on your palm. “You look just like her. ‘Course I never met your daddy to know what he looks like.”
“You knew my mom?” he asked, suspicion flooding his face again. He stood across the small living room, keeping his fists close to his sides.
“Well she was married to my dad, so...yeah.”
A few things happened with his expression then. First his eyebrows relaxed, and he looked confused. Then his lids widened and his mouth dropped in realization. Finally, his lips formed an ‘o’ as he said, “Ooh...No way.”
“Now you remember me?” you asked.
“(Y/N)?” he asked. “You live here?” He looked around the house, inspecting each corner quickly as he turned in a circle. “This was my mom’s house, though. Shouldn’t it’ve gone to my grandpa’er something?” he asked.
You shrugged. “It did. And he left it to my dad, who left it to me.”
“So...Robert’s not here, then?” he asked.
You dropped your gaze from him and let yourself feel a small pang of grief for your dad. You licked your lips as it passed and shook your head. “He passed a couple years ago,” you said.
When you looked at Peter, his shoulders dropped, and his face was strained. But it was familiar, and that was comforting.
“I’m so sorry,” he said.
You nodded. “He had a long life. A good life. Mostly.” You cleared your throat and stood, pausing in uncertainty for a moment. You had so many questions for Peter, but suddenly you didn’t want to ask them. What if he left you, just like everyone else, when you were done? And why was he here in the first place? He was a national hero - and an intergalactic one, if you followed the stories correctly. He must’ve had somewhere else to be, and he hadn’t come back to his mother’s house in almost thirty years, so why now?
Instead of asking anything, you walked towards the kitchen. “Want anything to drink? I’ve got Sweet Tea, lemonade, a couple’a cans of Coke.”
“I haven’t had Sweet Tea in so long,” you heard him say softly.
You smiled, mostly to yourself as you got a glass out of one of the cabinets. You grabbed ice from the freezer, dropped it into the glass, the filled it with tea. You didn’t bother pouring one for yourself. You had too many things on your mind to worry about drinking.
Peter was on the couch, in your spot, when you came back into the room. You handed him the glass, which he thanked you for, and sat on the cushion next to his.
“I saw you on TV,” you told him.
He nodded and chugged the tea until the glass was half-empty.
“So you’re a hero now?” you asked.
He held the glass against one leg and kept nodding. “Yeah, I guess I am,” he said with a smug smile.
“The news kept sayin’ your team was the only one that knew how to come close to winnin’ against that purple guy,” you said. “Thanos, right?”
More nodding. “Gamora and Nebula know’em better than anyone in the galaxy, I bet.”
“Gamora - she’s the green one with the nice hair, right?” you asked.
He tried to hide a smile at the mention of her name, it looked like. He pulled his lips to one side of his face, then the other, then settled on taking a sip of tea while he continued to nod. So much nodding, you thought. He mumbled an mhm behind the ice.
“And the rest of your team?” you asked. “How’d they end up here?” You wanted to ask him how he had ended up here, and you hoped this would be your way in.
He shrugged. “Last couple’a years’ve been kinda weird,” he said. “Touched one too many infinity stones, if ya’know what I’m saying.”
You didn’t. Not literally, anyway. You’d heard about the infinity stones, of course. Thanos had them or he was after them or something. You thought one of the stones was the blue orb in the Norse God’s brother’s staff… The hero connections could be made later, you thought.
“Peter,” you said, scratching your thumb with your forefinger. “What happened that night?”
You thought he almost shut down. His eyes went as blank as his face, and his hand became so loose around the glass that it nearly tipped over and spilled the rest of his tea all over the carpet. He caught it just in time, then sat up straight and looked you square in the eye again.
“I don’t know if you’ll believe me,” he said quietly.
You rose your brows. “I watched you fight an intergalactic tyrant with magical stones a few weeks ago,” you said. “Before that, I watched a man who makes robots for a living almost get killed by a robot he created and gave sentience. Before that, the same man was almost killed for selling killing machines. I’ve seen a lot more than you’d think.”
He blinked a few times at you, then finished off his tea and placed the glass on the coffee table in front of you. “I’ve been gone a long time,” he said.
You nodded. “My dad and I looked for you for years. Even after the police gave up, we tried everything we could to track you down but you just...evaporated or something. You were gone.”
“I was...I was abducted,” he said. He waited for you to say something, but you didn’t. “My dad paid a space pirate to pick me up and bring me to him so he could test out my ability to conduct his ethereal power in an effort to spread himself all over the galaxy.”
You felt your face drain of comprehension, just as your head did. “What?” you asked.
“Told you you wouldn’t believe me,” he said.
“One thing at a time, please.”
He sighed. “Fine. The night my mom… The night she passed, I was taken into space. There’s this group of pirates out there called Ravagers. One of’em was gettin’ paid by my dad to pick up his kids throughout the galaxy. He was usin’em, just like he was usin’ their other parents.”
Despite what you’d said and despite what you’d seen on TV, you could hardly believe what you were hearing. But you had to. The look on Peter’s face was too serious to laugh at. “And he was usin’ you to do...what exactly?” you asked, your face twisting in question.
“He had this plan. Eternity, he called it. His essence would’ve spread everywhere, eating anything in its path until everything was him.”
“I guess that explains what happened to the Dairy Queen down the road,” you mumbled.
He paused, laughed, and nodded. “I always loved that place,” he said.
“You did. I remember.” You smiled at him, remembering the scrawny red-haired kid you’d taken to the Dairy Queen on multiple occasions. Now it was still in a state of disrepair, but the owners of the franchise were optimistic they’d get it back up and running within the year. “But you were saying?” you asked.
“Yeah. Turns out my dad made of pure light was kind of a jackass,” he said. “He let me believe he wanted to be my dad, like I still had some part of my mom out there with me if I had him.”
You got the feeling that this was the first time he was saying this out loud. Something in his face showed you how scared of his own words he was. You looked at his empty glass and stood again. He grabbed your wrist gently and shook his head.
“I’m okay,” he whispered.
You didn’t know if he meant personally, or with the tea. Either way, he wasn’t letting you go, so you put the glass back on the table and resumed your place next to him.
“I can’t believe you’re here,” he said.
You laughed. “I can’t believe you’re here, Peter Quill.”
He smiled at you, a charming smile not entirely unlike what you remembered Meredith’s smile looking like. “Hard to believe your little step-brother’s a Spaceman, ain’t it?” he asked.
“Maybe a bit,” you said. “Your momma always liked her Spacemen, though. Do you think she knew about your dad?”
With a shrug he said, “Doubtful. Dude was charming as hell.”
You nodded, and a silence fell over you for a few minutes. You looked out the front windows of the house as dark clouds started to roll in. For a split second, you worried Thanos had come here, that the weather was a sign of sure destruction. Peter’s presence didn’t help that theory. But within two minutes, it started to pour outside, and you knew it was just a southern afternoon shower.
“Hey Peter,” you asked before turning your attention back to him. He gave another mhm, and you asked, “Not that I mind seein’ you after all these years, but what’re you doin’ here?”
“I was in the area,” he said. When you leaned your head to one shoulder and blinked at him, he laughed. “Comparatively, of course.”
“You haven’t been back to Earth in almost thirty years?” you asked. “At all?”
He popped his lips once, immediately eliciting a memory from somewhere in the back of your mind. Peter was at the library with you, popping away until the old librarian came over to shush him. Then he said, “Not even once.”
“So, what?” you asked. “You’ve just been...out in the cosmos bein’ a space pirate’er something all that time?”
He shrugged. “Most of it. Some of it I was a scared kid for, you know,” he said. “The last couple’a years I’ve been a Guardian of the Galaxy. That’s what they call us out there.” He nodded toward the roof, but you knew what he meant. Then his expression was proud and cocky as he wiggled his eyebrows. “Why? Thinkin’ you got a pretty cool step-brother?”
You smiled, shrugging as if his story was nothing. “Could’ve had worse, I guess.”
You shared laughter then, pure and unapologetic, and you remembered what it felt like to have family around. It’d been too long, and even if Peter was a stranger now, he was the closest thing you had left to family.
When you’d calmed, he sighed and crossed one leg, resting his ankle on the other knee. His voice was small, almost a whisper as he said, “After Thanos fell, Tony Stark’s friend Pepper offered transport to...wherever. Our ship got hit pretty hard, so we’re grounded for a lil’ bit. I asked to come out here...just to see…”
The rain came down hard. He turned to the window and let himself get caught in the mesmerizing sounds, the way the tall grass outside blew in the wind. Surely he had to have seen so many more grand things out in Space, you thought. A little mid-day storm on Earth couldn’t be anything compared to the life he’d lived. And yet, he was silent and fixated, and so you let him be.
Eventually, he turned back to you slowly. “You look good,” he said. “What’ve you been doin’ while I’ve been gone?”
You chuckled softly, shaking your head. “Nothin’ compared to you, Spaceman.”
“It’s Star-Lord.”
“Right,” you said, nodding with a smug smile.
He nudged your arm with two fingers gently. “Really. I wanna hear about Terra since I left.”
“Terra?” you asked. “That’s what y’all call Earth in Space?”
He nodded, but gestured for you to go on.
You rolled your eyes and shook your head. You told him, “They cancelled Knight Rider. Then rebooted it, like, seven years ago. It sucked.”
“I guess Hasselhoff wasn’t in it?” he asked.
You shook your head. “He was in the Spongebob Movie, though,” you said.
“What the hell is that?” he asked.
You laughed, and then you couldn’t stop. “It’s the worst movie ever,” you said, still laughing. “No, actually it’s not. It’s about a sea sponge and his best friend, who’s a starfish and...you know, I don’t actually remember the plot of the movie.”
His eyebrows rose. “What about Alyssa Milano?” he asked.
You shrugged. “She was on a show about witches in the 90’s. I liked it,” you said. “Now she mostly does commercials for UNICEF and Atkins.”
“I don’t know what those are,” he said.
“They’re not that important. She does commercials.”
“How’s Stevie Nicks?” he asked.
“As lovely and ethereal as ever,” you said.
His eyes widened. “Really? After all this time?”
You nodded, got up, and went to the cabinet by the TV. You kept a stack of albums in there, including The Dance, Fleetwood Mac’s live album from 1997. You pulled it out, handed it to him and said, “And that’s not even the most recent picture of her. But more or less, she looks like that.”
“Jesus,” he whispered. “Lindsey and Mick look awful!”
You shrugged. “You asked about Stevie,” you said. He handed the album back to you, and you stashed it away once more.
“So what’s...new music like?” he asked. “ELO have anything new?”
“Yeah, but it’s not as good. And it’s not popular now,” you said. You looked through the stack of albums and pulled out one that you listened to whenever you needed to feel something.
“I think this woman’s just a lil’ younger than you, Peter, but she’s great. One of the most talented people to have ever lived.” You handed him the album, and he examined it.
“This just says Lemonade.”
You groaned and shook your head. “That’s the album title, Spaceman. Her name’s Beyoncé, and she’s...she may as well be a superhero, if I’m bein’ totally honest.”
He turned the album over, then turned it back and handed it to you. “You got somewhere to play it?” he asked.
You smiled and turned to your stereo, which sat on a small shelf above the television. It was an old piece of machinery, but it still worked, and you took good care of it. You turned it on, slipped the CD in, and watched as Peter Quill consumed Beyoncé for the first time.
Oooh! Yondu/Meredith, haunted.
Brilliant suggestion, and I now have my “haunted” square filled! Also posted on AO3: Rage and Glory.
Yondu didn’t remember, after, when or how he first noticed her. It was a thing that happened slowly, over a number of years, as the Terran boy grew from a scrawny child with a mop of tousled reddish hair, to an equally scrawny adolescent, gangly with oversized hands and feet, in the way of half-grown humanoids the galaxy over.
He didn’t figure out who or what she was, until awhile later. He didn’t notice if she came on board with the boy.
But she was there … somehow. A glimpse of blonde hair, out of the corner of his eye, whisking around a corner. A fragment of song, one of Quill’s Terran songs, hummed in a woman’s sweet voice. A scent of vanilla perfume.
She didn’t like him. He found his things rearranged, thought at first the boys were messing with him. Felt a slap, more than once, that made him turn his head, though it didn’t really hurt and the sting faded in seconds – after he knocked the kid flat in their fight training, after he sent the boy out for his first time pickpocketing solo.
Found wires pulled out on his M-ship one time, dangling from under the console. He crouched to look at it, sorting through possibilities, keeping his face still. Could be he had a wannabe mutineer on board, somebody who thought knocking off the cap'n would be a ticket to an instant promotion rather than an arrow through the throat.
Could be it had to do with the bruise he’d left on the boy’s cheekbone two days ago, after Quill backtalked once too often and wouldn’t do what he was told. Couldn’t be having that shit on his ship. This wasn’t a nursery school on Xandar; this here was a mercenary ship.
Now the bruise was fading to browns and yellows, standing out on Quill’s abnormally pale skin. The kid had slunk around the Eclector for the last two days, doing his chores sullenly but obediently, and the only words Yondu’d gotten out of him was “Yes, Cap'n” and “No, Cap'n”.
It shouldn’t have left the bitter taste that it did in the back of his throat, a taste that was all too much like the stink of the slave pens.
And now this. He cupped the wires in his hand. Wondered, for a moment, if the boy could’ve tried to have his revenge, if the boy really hated him that much.
But ... no. Murder wasn't Peter's style. Kid was soft; never really had it in him.
“You know, I could'a had the kid with me right now,” he said quietly to empty air. “Could'a taken him out with me, distracted by his chatter, didn’t even bother to check the equipment. You want that?”
The air was silent and oddly heavy.
“Look,” Yondu said to that strange, heavy silence. “I know you hate me. Ain’t given you no reason to love me, I guess. It do any good if I ask you what you want?”
With a suddenness that made him flinch, the M-ship’s speakers began to play music. It wasn’t loud, but he recognized it. Early on, when it started to get obvious how much the kid relied on his music to calm him down, Yondu had cloned both his music holders – the one he always played, and the one in the box his mommy gave him, which was a simple matter of scanning it through the wrapping – just in case anything ever happened to either of them.
The speakers were playing “Bring It On Home.”
He laughed softly to himself, with a bitterly ironic edge to it.
“Yeah, you wanna go home. ‘Course you do.” He bowed his head over the torn-out wiring, piecing it back together with his fingertips – a delicacy, he thought, that his hands were capable of, but he hadn’t shown much of that to the kid, or anyone else.
“Don’t we all,” he said absently as he worked. “Kid wants to go home too. Never shuts up about it. An’ you prob'ly want me to take him to that no-good daddy of his, but you know what? Ain’t gonna do it. Every last one of them other kids is dead. You want your kid’s bones thrown on the pile, let’s just take ‘im there.”
The sting was half expected, like a whip lowered in anticipated punishment, except this only hurt for seconds across the side of his face. Right where he’d hit Peter. Like he had any doubt what all of this was about.
“Don’t believe me?” he asked, smiling grimly as he twisted two wires together. Wasn’t a pretty patch job, but it’d do. He’d have Kraglin come up later and solder it proper, say the ship got banged up on a job and he’d just now noticed. “There’s a pile of bones, little kid bones. Saw it with my own eyes. I know I’m an asshole, ma'am, but I hate to break it to you – your kid’s daddy is a bigger one.”
The music had faded out as he was talking until he could no longer hear it. Yondu went ahead and finished putting his ship back together, closed the panel, and stood up, dusting off his hands.
“Guess I could do better,” he said to the air, and wondered if he was imagining the heavy feeling, as if the ship itself was listening to him. “Could do a lot of things better. Guess I ain’t really done none of it right. But –” He stopped there, swallowing the explanation – the justification – before it left his mouth. He didn’t know how to do this, didn’t even want to do this, but it wasn’t like he could say that to the kid’s dead momma. He did have a little scrap of decency or two. Enough to stop his tongue.
“So maybe I could try a little bit harder,” he told the silence. “An’ maybe you stop bein’ a hazard by tryin’ to get me killed. Looks like we all stuck with each other here, you an’ me an’ the kid, so you think you can do that?”
No answer, of course. Was probably talking to empty air and his own guilty conscience.
***
He took the boy out the next day, in his very own personal ship (checked over thoroughly by Kraglin beforehand, not that Yondu told him why), and let Quill take the controls, talked him through a full landing in atmosphere.
It was the first time he’d seen Quill’s grin in two days, quick and bright, eyes sparkling above the incriminating colors on his cheek.
‘Course, when they got back to the ship, he went into his quarters to find his pillow dunked in the crapper.
“Right, yeah, I get it,” he said, pulling it out and shaking it off. “It don’t make up for it, an’ you know what? I know that. I ain’t stupid. An’ I wasn’t lyin’ to you about the kid’s piece of shit dad, any more than I was lyin’ about the rest of it.”
He went down a little while later to the storage deck where the boy slept, away from the rest of the crew, in what was technically a storage locker with a lock-strip Yondu had given him to shut the door an’ keep out the riff-raff. These days the boy didn’t lock the door much, and it was open tonight, given Yondu a glimpse of a ginger mop of hair and a scrawny shape curled up under a pile of blankets and furs.
Somewhere, a woman was singing very quietly, and Yondu saw the boy’s shoulders relax.
“… I’m high on believingThat you’re in love with me.”
He sat down outside the locker, his back against the wall, and quietly went through his end-of-day routine with his weapons – checked the arrow, made sure the knives were clean and sharp and accessible, that the little blaster up his sleeve was fully charged and in good working order – and all the while, listened to the woman sing.
She didn’t seem to mind him being there. Or at least if she did, she didn’t make him leave.
Yondu-Week
we kidnap and ravage and don’t give a hoot
The life of Captain Yondu Udonta.
Day Two: A Pirate’s Life || 554 Words || Character Study, Backstory, Routine
A day in Yondu’s life usually goes like this:
He wakes up, likely hungover and sore from the night before, with most of his clothes missing and a first mate attached to him to the hip like a damn tentacled creature, and gets up to start his day.
Yondu will then eat his damn breakfast, Kraglin at his side complaining about being rudely awoken by being kicked out of the bed as if he had any rights to whine, and goes to sit on his Captain chair where he spends most of his time at discussing whatever important business there is.
Sometimes he will nap, sometimes he will kill a guy or two or five.
Overall it’s all very boring.
When he’s finally hungry again he’ll eat whatever disgusting grub their cook made and hope it ain’t breathing still as he downs it with booze.
He has two usual breaks every day where he sneaks into whatever corner they can find with Kraglin for some alone time and a warm mouth, and then he’s back at the chair. They plan heists, discuss future jobs and who will get a visit from them next.
Hours later and he will be done with it all, declare it an early night - is that even the correct term if it isn’t night, and he does it everyday? - and goes to get drunk with his most trusted mates. He will drink, he will laugh, play poker and maybe even break into a fight. Then he and Kraglin will find each other and fall into bed together and it starts all over again.
Some days it will go differently, when they have a job to do and shit to steal.
Those days Yondu will team up his most competent men together with the most replaceable to deal in contraband or break somewhere to steal something shiny only to hold it hostage until they’re paid more than agreed before, and after the gig they’ll party in Contraxia until the third sun goes up and they’re kicked out of the bot-brothel - laughing, shitfaced and satisfied.
But in the end, deep down, it’s all the same.
And he loves every single second of it. He’s a Ravager, captain of his own fleet and owner of his own destiny.
He can do whatever he wants.
So what, pray and tell, Yondu is doing sitting next to a crying Terran while could could very much be doing something else entirely - his first mate, for example, or would it be the other way today? - he doesn’t know.
Yondu looks at the kid, the snotty red-head human boy who’s terrified of them all and won’t let go of his music crying for his momma and to go home for cicles now, and sighs.
He can’t give the kid to Ego, not after he found out what he did to the others, not after he failed them all. Thinking he was doin’ them some good and getting paid on the side when he was none better than his own parents who sold him. But he also can’t give him back to Terra where Ego knows where to find him. The little one was his responsibility now, his screw-up to fix.
It’s not sentimentalism, he tells himself. It’s an honor thing.
Yondu gives him his best smile.
“Hey boy, wanna go on a space adventure?”
Im here for werewolf Peter
I feel v strongly about werewolf peter quill. And i was browsing @itsallavengers wonderful blog. So i guess i love the gotg gamd extra hard now no biggie
Like his momma never got to tell petes dad bf he fucked off, so yondu wasnt prepared to have a howling terran pup aboard the ship -what the flarkin hELL
and petes dealin with the loss of his pack, either thru distance or because his momma was the only wolf in the family. And he also finds out that werewolves are completely a human disease and he bites at the crew and none of them turn.
He never tells yondu that hes contagious. But he also finds himself bonding w the cranky old fart anyway. Making him and some other ravagers Pack so he can feel a bond thrumming btw them. The others dont give any indication of noticing, which just pushes him further into feeling isolated, but sometimes Yondu scratches his nose and squints at him whenever peters tryin to hide something.
(He’ll recognize this later much much later as a total Dad move, but with that arrow controller of his…)
He tells himself its not a real packbond, that he just bonded w his captors as a defence mechanism. But u cant just bond w ppl ur around all willy nilly. There has to be something there to draw u together.
(Its how he knows somethings wrong, all the way on ego. He feels many of those early old bonds snap. One by one until only the guardians and Yondu and Kraglin are left. )
Bravery
Yondu is hanging out on Earth and meets an adorable, little girl named Violet. Ao3 link.
Yondu was used to people staring, especially children. Children were curious about the world, and when they saw something different from what they knew, they were naturally interested. So he didn’t mind that the small girl was staring at him. She had been staring at him since they had come into the diner. She must have been feeling bold because she got up from her seat and walked over to the table where Yondu was sitting with Kraglin. Walking closer, she continued taking him all in. Suddenly, she reached out and touched his skin. He merely smiled, letting her run her hand over his arm. “Does your mommy know you colored yourself blue?” She asked, running her fingers over his arm. Yondu had to chuckle. This was another reason he liked children. They were so innocent and also very honest. He was probably the first alien she had ever seen before. “No sweetie,” He smiled at her. “I was born this way.” The little girl looked up at him. She had a pair of big, round brown eyes that were filled with wonder. Her black hair was in two big pigtails and she had lovely dark skin. Clasped tightly in her hands was a rag doll with red hair. Honestly, she was just precious. “Wow! I wish I was born pink or orange or maybe red!” The girl said. Kraglin chuckled. The two of them had seen the little girl a few times. They were sitting in a diner, waiting for the rain to stop. This little girl was always in the restaurant, usually sitting at the bar with a coloring book. But today, she had gotten up the courage to talk to the two of them. Feeling even braver, the young girl sat next to Yondu in the booth. “My name is Violet!” She said and then held up her doll. “This is my Raggedy Ann doll. Say hi Raggedy!” Violet held up the doll’s hand and made her wave. It was the most precious thing Yondu had seen. “It’s a pleasure to meet you ladies,” Yondu grinned. “My name is Yondu.” “Yondu? That’s a funny name, but I like it.” Violet smiled sweetly. “This fella here is my first mate Kraglin.” “A first mate? What’s that?” “Well, you see darling, I’m a captain. Kraglin is my second-in-command.” “Are you a pirate?” Violet asked excitedly. “Like Captain Jack Sparrow or Blackbeard?” “Don’t know who they are. Are they cool?” “Yeah,” Violet played with one of her pigtails. “But they aren’t blue. Oh, are you like the Hulk?When he gets angry, he turns green and big! Are you sad? Is that your power?” “No sweetie. Like I said, I was born this way. I come from a planet called Centauri. We’re born blue.” “You’re an alien! Cool! What about Mr. Kraglin? Are you an alien too?” Violet looked at Kraglin hopefully. “Yeah, I sure am.” Kraglin smiled. “Violet? Oh sweetheart, don’t bother the nice men.” A woman wearing a yellow dress and white apron came over to the table. It was obvious she was Violet’s mother. They had the same skin and gorgeous hair. Yondu had recognized her. The woman was a waitress here. What was her name? It started with a C. Violet waved to her mother. The woman looked exhausted. No, not exhausted. The Terran female looked like she was ready to fall over at any given time. There were bags under her eyes, and Yondu could tell she had been on her feet for a long time. But despite this, she was smiling at the two aliens. Out of curiosity or because she had to be polite? He really couldn’t tell. “Mommy, I made new friends!” Violet said proudly. “I’m so sorry,” The woman smiled at Yondu weakly. “I don’t have a babysitter, so she has to come with me to work and–” “Oh don’t apologize. Violet is a delight, ain’t she Kraglin?” Kraglin nodded. “Is this your momma Violet?” “Yeah,” Violet nodded. “Should have figured. She’s as pretty as you,” Yondu looked back at the other woman. “It’s no biggy. She’s not bothering us.” “Are you sure?” “Positive Miss,” Yondu looked at her nametag. “Cora. Violet, I’ve got a story for you. Do you know the human who calls himself Star Lord?” “Yeah! He’s a hero and a–a—garden of the galaxy.” “A guardian of the galaxy,” Yondu chuckled. “Well, would you believe me if I told you that I taught him everything he knows?” “No way!” “Yes, way. See, when he was little, he was on my ship, and I taught him how to shoot a laser.” Cora smiled as Yondu began the story. Yondu glanced up at her and winked at her. Cora’s smile grew, and she headed back to work. For hours, Yondu told Violet tales about his life as a Ravager. Intently, the little girl listened, holding her doll and staring at Yondu with her bright eyes. She hung on every word, only stopping him to ask questions. She had a lot to ask for the two aliens. For instance, she wanted to know where they went to the bathroom, what they ate and if they had My Little Ponies in space. “Violet, it’s time to head on home.” “Can’t I stay here and talk with Mr. Yondu and Mr. Kraglin?” She asked hopefully. “No sweetheart. It’s late, we have to go home,” Cora said. “But if they come back tomorrow, you can talk to them then.” “Awwww,” Violet pouted. “I wish I could stay.” “Listen to yer mama Violet,” Yondu grinned. “You need your sleep. And in the morning, when you come with your mama, we’ll be here. You can even bring some of your ponies to show us.” “Okay! I’ll bring all my ponies, and I’ll introduce you to them!” Violet smiled as she got up from the table. “Night Yondu! Night Kraglin!”
Yondu and Kraglin waved goodbye to the young girl. “Cute kid.” Kraglin smiled. “Yeah. Goddamn adorable.”
Yondu and Kraglin went to the same diner every single day for weeks. Violet was thrilled. She was overjoyed at someone to talk to. It also seemed to be a big relief to Cora. The poor woman was overworked by the looks of it, and on top of it all, she had a daughter to raise. Yondu had no problem keeping an eye on Violet. In fact, he made his visits much more interesting. “This is Rainbow Dash, she’s a pegasus!” Violet held up the blue horse. “She’s super fast and has rainbow hair! And this is Fluttershy! She’s also a pegasus, but she’s shy and likes to talk to animals.” “Huh. Rainbow Dosh and Flutterwhy?” Yondu asked. “No!” Violet giggled. “Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy!” “Ah, you’re right,” Yondu hit himself on the head playfully. “I’m so silly!” “What’s this horsey’s name?” Kraglin pointed to a white one. “That’s Rarity! She’s a unicorn, and she’s fashionable!” Violet explained. “Spike has a crush on her. Spike’s a dragon, but he’s Twilight’s best friend.” “You sure know a lot about ponies,” Kraglin picked up another one. “You wanna learn to ride them one day?” “Yeah,” Violet said. “I want a pony one day, but I have to wait because Mommy doesn’t have enough money for a pony. She works really hard, but most of that money goes to stuff like bills and school. I wish I didn’t have to go. School is boring, and it’s filled with smelly boys.” “Boys can indeed be smelly,” Yondu mused. “Violet, where’s your daddy at?” “I don’t like my Daddy. He’s a buttface!” Violet declared. “A buttface? Well, that isn’t nice.” Kraglin said. “Yeah but he’s not a nice person,” Violet continued. “Daddies are supposed to be kind to their wives and their daughters, but my daddy isn’t. He yelled at Mommy, pulled her hair, pushed her down and he even hit her. So I hit him back.” “You defended your mother,” Yondu grinned slightly. “You sure are brave!” “Am I?” Violet asked. “Like you?” “I think you’re braver than I am sugar,” Yondu patted her head. “Now, let’s get back to your ponies.” For a while, things were fine. Cora slowly became more comfortable about Yondu and Kraglin. On good days, she’d slip them a slice of free pie. She would even talk to them, explaining about how she was trying to go back to college, some Earth invention. Cora was studying to be a nurse. Working at the dinner was just a means to an end. Yondu had jokingly suggested she become a Ravager, making her laugh. Violet said she wouldn’t mind living in a spaceship as long as she could bring her ponies. There were times where Violet would fall asleep on Yondu’s lap, and he would carefully pick her up to take her to Cora’s car. Violet would talk and talk, not wanting to stop even if she was tired. Yondu could always tell when the young girl was ready to collapse. But she would talk until she closed her eyes and slumped over against him. Kraglin teased Yondu about being a big softie, but the first mate adored the little girl as much as Yondu did. Kraglin let Violet paint his nails, commenting on how talented she was. It was a charmed life. Until one day. “Violet?” Cora looked behind the counter. “Violet? Honey, where are you?” Yondu watched as Cora searched for her daughter. Violet hadn’t been waiting for him and Kraglin, so he already knew something was up. Cora looked more frazzled than usual. Her eyes searched the diner, her face filled with dread. Yondu glanced at Kraglin before approaching Cora. “Miss Cora, is everything alright?” He asked. “Oh, Yondu! Have you seen Violet? I can’t find her!” Cora began. “She was sitting over there in that booth, but when I came back from the kitchen, she was gone!” “Did you try checking the bathroom?” Yondu suggested. “I didn’t! That’s a good idea!” Cora gave him a weak smile before heading to the bathroom. “Boss?” “Yeah, I know. I think she’s just in the can. She’ll be–”
A scream caused Yondu to jump slightly. Both he and Kraglin ran to the bathroom. Cora was on her knees, rocking back and forth. She was holding something. Yondu joined her, holding her. She looked at him, tears running down her face. The item in her hand was Violet’s Raggedy Ann doll. The head had been torn off. “He took her,” Cora said between cries. “Oh my god, he took my baby.” “Miss Cora, can you use your words?” “He found us! My ex-husband! He found out where I worked and he took Violet! Oh god, what will he do to her? What if he—” “Now, now, now,” Yondu stopped her. “Listen, there is no need to get yourself worked up. Me and Kraglin will take care of this for you. We’ll get Violet back. You just tell me his name, and I’ll find him. I promise.” “No, I can’t ask you to do that.” “You’re not asking,” Yondu helped her up. “You go sit down, and we’ll deal with your nasty ex. Alright?”
“Come out from under the bed Violet.”
“NO!” Violet was scrunched up beneath the bed in the hotel room. In one hand, she was clutching a pair of scissors she had found in one of the drawers. Despite her father’s kind face, she knew it was dumb to trust him. Already, he had hit her. Her lip was busted thanks to him. Glaring at him, she tightened her grip on the scissors. It was the only way she could defend herself. Her father had already slapped her, and her face still stung from his hand. “Sweetie, please.” “Don’t call me sweetie!” She growled. “Honey, I”m trying very hard to be sweet,” He reached towards her. “Don’t you want to be a family again?” “Not with you!” Violet spat. “You hurt mommy! You said you were going to get better and you lied! I hate you and wish you would just die!” Her father’s eyes turned dark. For a second, Violet was scared. But she remembered that Yondu had called her brave. She was just like him. Her father reached again, trying to get to her but then there was a knock at the door. “Go away please!” Her father called. Another knock came, this one louder and more forceful. Growling, her father got up. Violet waited a second before scooting closer towards the edge of the bed. Then was a loud boom as the door was opened and Violet heard a familiar voice. “Yondu?” She asked. Feet appeared in the room. Violet was silent until she saw Yondu’s face. Smiling, she crawled out from under the bed. She dropped the scissors as she wrapped her arms around the alien’s neck. Yondu picked her up, holding her tightly. Violet sniffled a bit, but she didn’t want to cry. Brave people didn’t cry. She wasn’t really sad. If anything, she was happy that someone had come to save her. Yondu looked at her. “Are you alright?” He asked, looking at her lip. Violet nodded. Yondu went into the other room. Kraglin had a strange weapon pointed at Violet’s father. He looked over to Violet who hid her face in the crook of Yondu’s neck. She didn’t want to look at her terrible, awful good for nothing dad. Instead, she just clung to Yondu for dear life. “Where are you taking my daughter?” Yondu placed Violet down. She shivered and a tear rolled down her face, but Kraglin quickly picked her up. Like with Yondu, she clung to the other alien. Yondu opened up his jacket. With a sharp whistle, his famous Yaka arrow floated to his side. Violet watched the silver weapon hover in the air. Her father wasn’t as impressed as she was. Instead, he was giving Yondu a death glare. “You can’t have my Violet, and you can’t have my Cora!” Her father shouted. Another whistle and the arrow pierced her father’s hand. He shouted out in pain as Yondu grabbed the other by the neck. “Listen to me and listen to me well asshole,” Yondu’s voice was low. ‘If I ever hear about you bothering this sweet, little angel or her mama, I will tear your asshole out through your nose. You’ll never see them again, got it?” “They’re mine.” Was all Violet’s father got out. There was another whistle. Violet watched as her father screamed in agony as Yondu’s arrow went through his hand. She closed her eyes, not wanting to see the blood. She heard the screams, and she could deal with that. She couldn’t deal with the blood. “You do not own them. You will never own them. Heed my warning, or you’re a dead man. Let’s go Kraglin.”
Violet woke up, but she wasn’t in her bedroom. Instead, she had woken up in a hospital room. Her Raggedy Ann doll was in bed next to her. Someone had sewn her head back onto her body. Violet pulled it closer to her, smiling. Sitting in the chair across from her was her mother who was asleep. But Violet didn’t see Yondu or Kraglin. She stood up and looked around the room. She found a note on the bedside table along with a box wrapped in pink wrapping paper. Violet’s name was on the letter, so she opened it. Dear Violet, Me and Kraglin went to make sure your papa doesn’t come back to bother you and your ma. You did a really brave thing, standing up to him and I’m pretty proud of you. You’re the bravest person I know. I have some business to attend too, but I promise you that we’ll be back. There is something in the box for your mama. It’s in an envelope. Take care of your new friend and be good to your mama. Yondu Violet was confused, but she opened up the box. She smiled when she saw a brand new Princess Celestia doll. Then, she reached in and took out of the envelope. Her curiosity got the better of her, and she looked inside it. It was filled with money. A lot of money. Smiling, she closed the envelope and went to find her mother. Yondu was her favorite hero, Violet decided. And when he got back, she was going to show him all her new ponies.
Kids. Crew. Family?
Yondu turns kids into cargo.
The first one didn’t have a name.
The first one didn’t have a name.
He wasn’t interested. He wanted as little contact as possible with the thing. Sure, it was a kid, and they were bringing her to her father, but Yondu preferred the distance. He felt a slight turmoil in his stomach about turning a kid into cargo.
But he was being paid enough to sustain his crew for 4 months, and he honestly couldn’t say no. Especially since Tullk had been complaining about the lack of updated medical gear in their Medbay. He needed to do this, for the sake of the crew. And of course, the kid would get family, right? Whoever this Ego guy was, he seemed shifty, but heart might just be in the right place. And after he’d told Yondu of the sickness that plagued the rest of her family… Yondu couldn’t leave the child without anyone to take care of ‘em, right?
She had two horns on each side of her forehead, bright orange skin, and eyes that had turned Taserface into a blushing mess. Nah, best keep his distance from this kid. After all, it was only two days of travel.
Don’t get attached.
The second one didn’t have a name either.
Ego had stumbled in his explanation, rambled on about having many loves spread across the galaxy, turning red in the face and Yondu had only rolled his eyes. Sure, he could bring the new kid if he wasn’t being treated right by his momma. It was one of the rare stealth missions his faction came across, as half the house was secured with alarms and those tiny larvae creatures that slowly dissolved your skin right off ya face. Yondu had whistled slow and steady that night, grabbed the kid quickly and then gotten rid of it as soon as he could. Kid turned into cargo once more. Ego seemed to have literal stars in his eyes as the new kid was brought in.
Yondu wanted to inquire about the other kid, the girl, but figured he wasn’t being paid to care.
He left the planet with enough Units to pay for two new generators and enough spare parts to last them at least a year.
Third one was nameless.
Another boy, this one switching names and identities as quick as his shapeshifting allowed him. Had a troubled life, orphan, turned to petty crimes and getting away with it for the moment. But Ego was worried for his kid’s safety and Yondu had agreed again.
Ego could set the kid straight, sure. One less bounty for Yondu to hunt later, if the kid could manage to last long enough to get a wanted poster printed with his ever-changing face and name.
The third boy was a slippery one, and managed to elude them for almost 2 weeks before being pinned down at an orphanage handing out stolen socks and tattered books. Yondu had grabbed the kid, delivered the prize to Ego, and donated what he could to the dilapidated building that masqueraded as a government facility for orphans.
Anonymous of course.
Better they have a roof over their heads than…
Yondu pushed the planet out of his thoughts as soon as Ego called him to collect number four.
The fourth one was another boy.
Mute, rarely gesturing or called attention to himself. Which would explain why it looked like a strong wind would snap the little twig in half if he wasn’t careful. Yondu had stocked up well on supplies for the kitchen before leaving the planet, and sure enough, little by little, supplies disappeared and the boy’s healthy green glow returned. His crew ate well on that trip too, and it was only made better by the fact that Ego paid double for this one. Yondu wasn’t about to say no to Units, but a small voice in the back of his skull started talking after that delivery.
The fifth one was a firecracker of a girl, eyes lighting up at the mention of a planet basically to herself and her brothers and sisters, and father, of course. She had grinned a toothy grin, fangs dipping well past her chin and Yondu received a clap on the back for coming to get her. He’d smiled; she was a good kid, if a little greedy. But Yondu didn’t judge, because damn it, that would be hypocritical.
She’s practically leaped off the ship, shooting a wink at Taserface before touching the ground and running off. A beep on the comm suggested a transfer of Units, but Yondu didn’t pay attention to the amount this time. Ego had said that of course, there might be more, but so far he just wanted to thank Yondu for everything he’d done for the happiness of his family. For allowing him the chance to become a father, a better parent than what the world could otherwise offer to these kids.
Yondu had shrugged him off. It was just business.
The eighth one made him realize that maybe fatherhood wasn’t really something Yondu would accelerate at. The girl, around 7 years old, screamed tirelessly, but no matter how many of trinkets Yondu left lying around, she would lose interest within seconds and the drama started all over, with more snot and salty tears.
Tullk had been appointed unofficial nanny several months ago. Around the time they realized that they needed someone to get the kids food and water, and bathroom visits. Tullk had grumbled, but Cap’n’s words were final, and since Yondu didn’t fancy playing nursemaid…
Not even Tullk could get the kid to stop screaming. In the end, Yondu had isolated the room almost completely, deciding that if the kid didn’t want anything to do with them, then they might as well not bother. They build a latch to allow for food plates and water to slide inside, and installed a small but functioning bathroom in the room as well.
The screaming didn’t stop ringing in his head until several weeks later.
In between picking up Ego’s kids, Yondu’s crew mostly collected bounties, be it on people or possessions. Ego’s salary kept them afloat most of the year, but they still slept in a huge pile on the floor with blankets that got thinner and thinner, and at this point it wasn’t because they couldn’t expand to make separate quarters, but Yondu liked to be able to keep an eye on his crew.
He supposed he felt a little like Ego; he liked to keep those closest to him within reach.
Yondu wasn’t exactly parent material, but he had those he considered… something more profound than friends. He had his crew. His- Family seemed right, but also wrong. Yondu liked to keep distance, but he needed the control. And if he couldn’t have family, then he could have his Crew.
The 15th kid had a name.
Che’lok.
He’d been a tall, stubborn, blue skinned kid with half his teeth missing and only wearing what would amount to half a pair of pants and dirt enough for two. He’d looked up from the ground as Yondu had approached, and simply started crying. Yondu frowned and kneeled down, “Hey, kiddo.”
“Just kill me.”
Something cold and spiky had made its way down Yondu’s spine, “What’s that, kid?”
“I don’t want to fight. Just kill me, please?”
The tears had spilled hot and heavy over the boy’s cheeks and for a split second Yondu had seen himself and he knew that now he was fucked. “What’s your name kid?”
“Why?”
“Gotta write something on ya tombstone, right?”
The boy inhaled sharply and more tears fell.
Okay, maybe not the best approach, but a solid effort.
Yondu coughed, “There’s a guy called Ego looking for ya, kid. What’s your name?”
“Che’lok.”
“I’m Yondu. This guy Ego, he told me to find his kid. He’s talking ‘bout you.”
The boy shook his head, “I don’t have a dad, he- he- gone.”
“Ego wants to take ya in, boy. Ya got about a dozen brothers and sisters waiting too,” Yondu said wth a nod. The boy lifted his head slowly and Yondu flashed his crooked teeth, “I’ll take ya to ‘em, come on!”
The kid got to his feet and passed out as soon as he was shown his bunk in the cargo room.
Yondu had kept watch until food arrived, and left as the kid started to ask more questions.
Don’t get attached.
The kid had a family waiting for him, don’t screw it up, Yondu.
Che’lok was greeted by a woman with antennae that Yondu didn’t know, but Ego had been right behind her, encouraging the boy to follow to the main house. Yondu watched the boy go. “You take good care of ‘em, right Ego?”
“I surely try my best,” Ego smiled, eyes crinkling and he looked across the expansive garden. Yondu had been explained that the planet and Ego were critically connected somehow, but honestly he’d forgotten the details. All he remembered was that it was part of the reason Ego couldn’t look for these kids himself. He had to stay near the planet.
“What about the new girl? Who’s she?”
“An orphan. Great empathic abilities, but I’m afraid her potential is slightly hindered since her interactions are limited here,” Ego said, appearing saddened.
Yondu’s brow twitched, “You got about a dozen kids running around here, and you’re telling me her interactions are limited?”
Ego’s face hardened and he looked to the ground, “Actually… I…”
Yondu held his breath.
“Most of the kids have gone their own ways since you brought them to me. Some of them, as you know, were old enough to make their own path soon after I got them. Not many have chosen to stay, at least not after they reach that age,” Ego breathed it all out at once, sniffling a little and shit-
Yondu took a step back, “Sorry to hear that, um… Call me if you find another?”
It didn’t take long before Ego called for them again.
Yondu tried to increase the distance. He started sending his men out to find the kids instead of going himself. It was easier to reduce the kids to cargo if you never had to even lay eyes on them.
After number 21, Yondu had said to Ego that he needed to lay low for a while, to not contact him until Yondu reached out first. The crew hadn’t questioned it, only Tullk and Jef shot him inquiring looks but Yondu elected to ignore them.
Less than 5 months later they found Kraglin.
A-Chilitarian, 19 years old, with something to prove, and Yondu had grinned his customary toothy grin and said, “Bring it, kiddo!” He thoroughly ignored the few calls he got from Ego during the next 4 months, instead focusing on this one kid he had on board now, this possible permanent member of his crew.
So far so good, the kid wasn’t stumbling or fumbling and somehow the kid had also wormed himself into the hearts of the crewmembers. Yondu wasn’t sure how, but he knew they were all in agreement when Kraglin was pronounced First Mate mere months after first boarding the ship. The position wasn’t a demanding one, since Yondu had never bothered with actually having a First Mate. But Kraglin soon proved himself indispensable in the new position, covering ground where Yondu couldn’t, keeping tabs on the lists that Yondu got headaches from.
“Kraglin!”
“Yes, sir?”
“What do you think of this one?”
Kraglin had examined the tiny oddity Yondu held out. It was complete with pink gems and looking vaguely similar to an avian creature of some sort. The Broker didn’t say a word as Kraglin made a face. Yondu grinned, “That means I’m taking it.”
Kraglin had that overbearing look in his eyes, “Another for the collection, sir?”
“I’m filling out the entire thing, you know?”
“Sure, sir.”
Yondu chuckled, and less than an hour later, the pink ornament had taken place at the helm beside the purple, four legged creature with the single horn protruding from it’s forehead. “Kraglin!” he called.
“Yes, sir?”
“Excellent choice. Fits right in,” he sniggered.
Another two weeks of silence followed.
He was sure that Ego had had other ships find his kids. Yondu just knows. And the thought fucking terrifies him a little. Because shit, now he’s lost that control. Before, it was about money, sure, but he also knew how many kids Ego had taken in thus far. With who knows how many ships, there was no telling just how many… Had Yondu always just been one amongst many? If so, how many? Dozens? Hundreds? Thousands? What on earth was Ego…
“I found another Yondu, this one only about 7 jumps from your current location,” Ego said merrily.
Yondu skipped asking how Ego knows their exact location, and indulged, “Oh yeah? Boy or girl?”
Ego looked down at what Yondu assumed was a console, “Young boy. Mother is on the verge of succumbing to a fatal illness and his grandfather, his only living relative, is not fit for taking care of him.”
“Where are we going?”
“Terra.”
“Okay, hey, Ego, I’ve been meaning to ask, but that, uh… That Che’lok kid from a few years back? He still around?” he prodded lightly, keeping his tone casual. “Would love to just see him for a second or two. See how he’s holding up,” he added with a thin grin.
Ego sighed and for the first time, Yondu heard the impatience, “Yondu, I… That one unfortunaly became very ill few weeks after you brought him to me. I’m afraid he’s passed on.”
It didn’t sit right with Yondu and it wasn’t hard to fucking see that Ego was withholding something.
“Is there something you’re not telling me? What did he contract? Something infectious?” he asked, feigning concern for the briefest of moments.
Ego smiled, teeth and malice, and Yondu swallowed.
“Nothing you should worry yourself about. These kids… Not all of them connect to the planet as well as they should. But at least I could give those that perished a good home before they passed.”
Yondu feels his legs shake a little, “You’re helping them though, right? Figuring out how to stop it from happening, right?”
“Yondu, the planet’s me. I can’t change who I am, and I can’t exactly change the whole planet for these kids, now can I?” Ego asked, sparkle gone from his eyes.
“How about that screaming girl? The one who wouldn’t shut up? She around?” Yondu continued.
Ego’s face grew wearier, “She too, unfortunately-“
“Then the firecracker gal with the big fangs? What about her?”
Ego’s smile dropped completely, “It pains me to speak of, so I would appreciate no further questions for now, Yondu. Please, get me the Terran boy, and I’ll pay you double.”
The transmission ended and Yondu set his course.
“We going Cap’n?” Kraglin eyed him from the side.
Yondu got comfortable in his chair and nodded, “I’ll be damned if I let more of these kids anywhere near that wacko. Something's wrong. Don't know what, but whatever it is, it ain't right. Last job, this one. We'll find him somewhere else in the galaxy to go. Don’t matter where, as long as Ego can’t get ‘im. And then we’re done. Back to bounty huntin’ and trading.”
“Aye aye, Cap’n.”
And Yondu had taken one look at those red-rimmed blue eyes of the Terran boy, before asking the most important question, “What’s your name, kiddo?”
The kid clung to a square device with orange things attached by a black wire, “P-Pe-Peter Quill.”
“Peter.”
Couldn’t very well dump him someplace random, Ego would have more ships, more people out looking.
No choice then, “Get comfy, Petey, you’re gonna be bunking with us for a while.”
Cretaeam belua ex Terra
Chapter 1 The End of one Story is the Beginning of another
Meredith coughed, shivering slightly. She glanced over at the makeshift nest beside her, gazing sadly at the tiny form laying within. Her only son, Peter, lay there, unmoving save for his shallow but steady breaths. She ran a thin hand over his small stomach, feeling the ribs that were becoming way too obvious. They stuck out like roots just lightly buried in dirt. She needed to feed him more, or feed him something better, but neither were an option right now. Her baby boy, her precious Star Lord, only 3 years old, would unfortunately probably not make it to his next birthday, unless she somehow managed to miraculously beat the horrid disease wracking her body.
But she knew that wouldn't happen. She could feel it. It crawled through her, destroying anything in its path. It was only a matter of time before her strength gave out, leaving her son alone, destined to a slow death. It made tears well up in her eyes just thinking about it. If only they'd been human, she could have found someone to care for Peter.
'If only they'd been human...'
Meredith pushed herself up, wandering slowly deeper into the cave they were living in. A pile of books sat near a small candle. Laying down, she coughed before reaching for a book near the bottom of the pile. She flipped through its worn pages, looking for a certain page. She paused upon finding, thinking about what she was doing. If she did this, she would be sapped of all her strength, and Peter would finally have to face the inevitable, that she would be gone, and he would be alone. But if she didn't do this, Peter would be alone anyways with no chance of being cared for. At least this way, he would have a fighting chance at having a life.
Summoning her remaining strength, Meredith hauled the heavy book up off the ground and walked over to Peter's bed. Gently, she shook him awake.
"Peter. Peter sweetie wake up." She whispered, fighting back another rib cage rattling cough.
Peter stirred slowly, his thin, bat-like wings stretching out as he roused from slumber. The small, white spots that Meredith always thought looked like stars were just barely visible in the dim light. His large blue eyes blinked owlishly at her.
"Momma? Waah?" He groaned quietly, rubbing his eyes.
"Get up sweetheart, I need to tell you something. Something very important."
Peter sat up at that, trying desperately to rub the sleep from his eyes. He crawled over and flopped into his mother's lap. Meredith smiled and stroked his downy soft hair.
"Do you remember that talk we had? The one where I told you that I wouldn't always be here to take care of you?"
Peter nodded slowly, his face beginning to show mild distress.
"Well... that time has come. But there's something I need to do first, and I need you to promise me something."
Her son's eyes were leaking tears now. He let out a sob and buried his face into his mothers' stomach, not nearly awake or emotionally stable to deal with the information he was being given. He didn't know much, but he knew what his mother's words meant. It meant she would be leaving him alone. Forever.
His mother let him cry. After all, how do you tell a child who has just learned that he is going to lose the only loving figure he's ever known to stop crying?
"Momma, please don't go!" Peter sobbed, his voice shaking. Meredith pet her son's hair, tears dripping down her face.
"Shhh. Hush my child. It'll be okay. I'm going to make sure you aren't left alone." She whispered, before placing her palm flat on Peter's head. His eyes flashed white for a moment, before he collapsed onto her. She could hear bones crack as the spell worked its way through her son's body, changing his appearance. Meredith fell back onto the cave floor, her strength gone. Slowly, she reached over and grabbed her unconscious son's hand, feeling, and smelling, slick blood. She squeezed it gently, before moving to the back of the cave and laying down, closing her eyes for the last time.
Yondu stepped of his M-Ship, breathing in the damp night air. It was chilly out, so his breath was visible as he strode through the grassy field. He had been given some coordinates as to the boy's general location was, although they seemed rather odd. The coordinates led to a thick, dark forest, filled with tall evergreens. It was dark enough that Yondu had trouble seeing where he was going, cursing a few times along the way when he stubbed his toe or tripped. How did a Terran live in this mess? It was all brambles and branches.
Yondu paused as a familiar, iron tinged scent struck his nose. He flicked open the holster of his arrow just in case things got bad. He crept closer to the entrance of a cave, but paused when he saw what was in front of him. It was a small child, small enough that Yondu instinctively looked around for other Terrans. But he found none, only a thin, crumpled heap next to the boy's unconscious form. Blood surrounded the child, seeping through his clothes and staining the ground. Yondu closed the distance and knelt down, searching for a pulse. He found one, strong and quick despite the child's appearance. As gently as he could, Yondu picked the boy up, and let out a surprised curse when he felt how light the child was. Had his mother been starving the kid? Where was his mother?
Looking beyond where the child had been laying, Yondu could see a still, crumpled form that reeked of blood and sickness. Not a single wisp of movement could be sensed from her form. Yondu didn't bother going over to check her pulse. He slid a small satchel off of his shoulder and packed a few items into it. Some blankets, a book on Terran biology he found near the back of the cave, and finally, a small contraption that the child had on his person. A sort of headpiece attached to some kind if electronic.
Readjusting the sleeping child in his arms as gently as he could, he began to walk back to his M-Ship. But before he could reach the tree line, a low growl sounded out. Tensing, he spun on one foot to look behind him. 3 pairs of glowing green eyes stared straight at Yondu from the shadows of the forest. No, not at him, but at the kid in his arms. More growls began to rumble out, and large, clawed paws began to appear from the shadows. Yondu narrowed his eyes and pursed his lips, ready to whistle a tune that would send his Yaka arrow straight through these beasts' hearts, when the growling stopped. The creatures backed away as their eyes widened. They disappeared from sight moments later. Yondu cocked his head slightly. It wasn't unusual for animals to be afraid of his arrow, but he had never seen anyone who didn't know him personally recognize what his whistle meant.
Shaking it off, Yondu made his way back through the forest and to his ship. The ship activated its tractor beam, and within seconds he was back on the main part of the ship, near the pilot's chairs. Kraglin was sleeping soundly in the co-pilot chair. Yondu smacked the Xandarian on the back of the head as he passed. Kraglin snorted and blinked, glancing over at the Captain. He sucked in a breath when he saw the small thing clinging to Yondu's coat.
"Cap'n! Is that the cargo?!" He exclaimed, his eyebrows shooting up to his hairline.
"Yeah. You got a problem wit that Kraglin?" Yondu asked, starting up the engines.
"No, but Cap'n... he's so little." Kraglin said quietly.
"You going soft on me Krags?" The Captain growled.
Kraglin shook his head, but he kept sneaking glances at the sleeping boy the whole trip back to the Eclector. When they arrived, some of the crew had come to greet them.
Horuz cocked an eye at the sight of his captain holding a small bundle of clothing tucked up against his chest. It was only when the bundle move did he realise what Yondu was holding.
Now, being small and underfed was nothing new when it came to Ego's children, but Horuz could not remember the last time he had seen a child look so... skeletal. The child looked barely alive, breaths coming in slow and shallow, and exiting with a soft wheeze. He showed no signs of stirring as Yondu handed the child to his first mate, nor when Kraglin clumsily readjusted him in his arms. So, it came as a surprise when the child bolted awake when Yondu placed the translator onto his head.
The Terran froze, seemingly paralyzed by fear. Wide, fearful eyes darted around at the strange new people. He was shaking now, completely overwhelmed by all the new sights and faces, not to mention the complete lack of familiar faces. Horuz felt sorry for the young boy, most children they had picked up had been at least 3 years older than... Peter, was it? He couldn't quite remember exactly what the file had said, only that his mother had fallen ill, and that the child's name was Peter.
Skyyar, a particularly nasty V'tyana, sniffed at the child. Peter, deciding that Kraglin was a far more comforting presence than Skyyar, whimpered and hid his face in the Ravager's jacket, curling up into an even smaller ball.
"Hrmmm. Thisss one sssmellsss of weaknessesss. Perhapssss we should jussst eat him inssstead." The green, snake-like creature hissed, sticking out his forked tongue. Yondu growled.
"You say that EVERY DAMN TIME SKYYAR! For the last time, we DON'T eat cargo!" The captain snapped. The reptilian humanoid bowed his head, but flicked his gaze back towards Peter, discreetly wetting the scales around his mouth.
Yondu turned his attention to the boy curled into his first mate's chest, placing a hand on the quaking child's back. Peter flinched and his gaze snapped to Yondu, his pupils like pinpricks as he stared at the Captain. The child had begun to silently sob, fear gripping his heart in it's crushing grip.
"Easy there Petey. Skyyar's jus' bee'n a as-er, jerk. Ain't nobody gonna eat ch'a." He soothed. Yondu was tempted to threaten to eat the boy himself, but he had a feeling, with how young and truly afraid Peter was, that doing so could only end very, very badly. He glared at the rest of the present crew. "And can I trust that my crew can make that a well-known fact?" He asked, already knowing the answer, but looking for confirmation anyways.
Horuz and the other crewmates nodded immediately, while Skyyar hesitated, only briefly, before nodding as well. Kraglin narrowed his eyes at the V'tyana but said nothing. Instead, he jerked his head towards the ceiling. Yondu nodded and handed him the satchel. Kraglin slid it onto his shoulder and headed further into the Elector, missing the hungry eyes that followed the child in his arms.
“This isn’t the course to Ego’s---”
“Don’t mention that sack of shits name to me if’n you like your eyes in your head,” Yondu snarled in his first mate’s direction making him shut up instantly.
“Sides, the boy ain’t for Ego, already told ya we don’t deal with him anymore after he double crossed me with Tali.”
“Can I ask who the boy is for then, cap’n? You haven’t set any course for him yet.”
“I was paid quite the bundle by his momma actually,” Yondu lied easily not like his first mate was smart enough to catch him in it, “Half a million to just take him in, so I did. Don’t know what I am gonna do with him from there or why the woman thought she could trust me but she did. Soo we might as well make the welp useful.”
“Useful?” Horuz snarled walking into the once empty room making his worthless first mate jump at the man’s presence, “How the hell ya gonna make a baby useful?”
“I’ve been sayin’ it since ya set course for Terra cap’n, you already have the money, just drop him off, let him be someone else’s problem. One baby ya picked up is good enough.”
Yondu glared at Horuz as the man walked straight for the computer screens, easily shoving the first mate over enough to get a good view on where they were headed.
“We are headed into dead space,” Horuz scowled loudly looking at the direction the captain was heading them into, “There ain’t nothing for miles, nothing but dead planets.”
“That would be the point,” was Yondu’s only response.
“Ya being soft for the cabin boy again?” Horuz continued not caring if he was stepping onto thin ice, each word cracking the captain’s patience a little bit more, “That boy ain’t fit to be a ravenger but ya take us so far away from civilized society just ta----“
The arrow was inches from the man’s face now.
“Don’t push yer luck, ya ain’t useful enough to me to regret killing.”
“Whether I want cabin boy to crash another M Ship or not will be my decision,” he hissed into the man’s face, his first mate ducking back into his work to avoid the confrontation, “And if’n y’all don’t agree…”
The first mate’s eyes widened as the arrow shot towards him then back toward Horuz who was holding his hands up in defeat, not wanting to risk it. Excellent pilot and mechanic he may be but he wasn’t that good to save him from the arrow.
“Everything is set in order once more,” he said directly to his first mate.  The young Xandarian looked like he was about to wet himself as he nodded, brushing his long ratty black hair behind his ear.
“Aye captain, the course is set and everything is going smoothly, so you shouldn’t be needed, sir…”
The first mate was young and stupid, only getting the job after the crew had thrown him in front of Yondu after he asked who would stand as his first mate after the last three in a row had been killed. The job was cursed and no one wanted it, Yondu had to make due with incompetent and stupid if he wanted anyone to take charge beside him.
Lord help me, Yondu thought to himself shaking his head seeing the first mate already messing up his coordinates he had just set as he nervously pounded his hand into the control panel. It didn’t matter, there was nothing in dead space but unoccupied planets ravished by the kree empire years ago. Perfect place to stay low away from an angry celestial he had just denied his next victim and not a bad place to start training his wards.
Plenty of old mines, temples and abandoned cities in dead space to loot for anyone brave enough to set foot on them.
He was gonna make ravagers out of them yet, maybe then he would actually have some useful members of his crew….
Before exiting the room he stopped and looked straight into Horuz’s eyes daring the man to test his patience more but he was already backing off and putting his hands up in defeat.
“Best be getting used to the babies, because they aren’t going anywhere until I say so.”
---
Whatever Yondu was expecting when he approached the cell, it wasn’t what he saw. Peter was out of his hiding place for the first time in days, curled against Kraglin who was leaning against the cot, head tilted back in what looked like a painful position and snoring.
Both boys sleeping soundly. Peter curled against Kraglin and Kraglin’s hand resting in the boys dirty hair.
The was the first real look he had gotten of the child in days, he had bruises on his arm that were healing but still fresh from when his crew had grabbed him, his cloths were wrinkled and dusty.
None of the crew was clean exactly but they were genuinely cleaner than this. He would need a cleaning to ward off any unwanted sickness soon.
For now, he let the boys sleep. Kraglin was proving to be the most useful one on this whole damn ship at only fifteen. He knew he let that kid stay for a reason, he never let him down or bad mouthed him like the rest of these good for nothings.
Yondu made to leave but saw Peter shifting on Kraglin’s lap, a loud yawn blowing onto Kraglin’s face making the older boy groan in his sleep but he didn’t try to move. Peter was rubbing his eyes with the back of his hand, oblivious to Yondu’s presence.
Yondu cleared his throat after several minutes of just watched the boy scrub at his eyes and pop his neck followed by every finger. Yondu really didn’t have all day for the boy to get done doing whatever he was doing.
Peter’s back tensed and he paused popping his pinky, head turning towards Yondu. His expression went from nervous to determined in a matter of seconds. The boy taking a few deep breaths before scrambling to his feet and standing tall in front of Yondu on the other side of the bars, his fists tight and shaking at his side holding his fears.
“I want to be a ravager.”
That Yondu didn’t expect, he just stared at the boy trying to stand proudly before him but Yondu saw the quakes making there way through him, he saw the deep breath he took when Yondu continued to not respond.
“That ain’t yer decision, boy.”
Peter didn’t seem to want to relent on his new choice.
“Whoever is paying for me, I’ll offer triple.”
Yondu didn’t know whether to laugh or feel sorry seeing that look of pure terror at what this may imply in the future for him but the boy seemed to have his mind made up, he was dead set on being a part of his crew it seemed.
“What if I told ya I don’t want a snot nosed brat in my crew?”
“You let Kraglin join…”
Yondu did laugh at that one, this boy was something else.
“What if the only way of joining my crew, hypothetically speakin’, was to let my crew rip each limb off, one by one and let them eat those limbs to satisfy their thirst for Terran meat?”
Peter’s eyes were wide and he was shaking but he only tightened his fists more and stared Yondu straight in the eyes as he said firmly.
“I been through worse.”
“Yer a piece of work ya know that?” Yondu said shaking his head staring the little boy square in the eyes, “Ya spend three entire days hiding and now ya want to stay here for what could be the rest of your life. You may be damning yourself to unspeakable torture and ya still want it.”
“Ya don’t even want to ask why we picked yer skinny ass up in the first place?”
Peter grinded his teeth against his lip for a minute before whispering.
“My mom told me my daddy was from space…”he began but stopped trying to find the right words, “It must have had something to do with him.”
“And ya don’t want us to take ya to this hypothetical daddy, why?”
“Because I hate him…”
Yondu didn’t quite know how to respond to that one and felt whatever he would say to this traumatized child would be walking on thin ice. But he would give it to the kid, he was an excellent judge of character, Ego wasn’t someone worthy of love after what he had done to his children.
But, maybe Yondu himself wasn’t worthy of this boy’s undying trust either since he had helped kill five of this boy’s siblings.
“He left mom to die and let us suffer…” he whispered tears beginning to fall again as his fists tightened, “He didn’t deserve mom’s love, no one did.”
“Do you even know anything about yer daddy? Momma ever talk about him? Anything?”
“ Not much but….I hate him,” he hissed out through a whimper shaking harder but standing his ground turning his angry, tear stained eyes up towards Yondu again, “And I don’t want to see him. I want freedom.”
Yondu didn’t respond to the boy feeling pity for him again watching the bravado fade and him sink to the floor openly crying. His loud sobs woke Kraglin up who was next to him in an instant, hovering next to him looking at the captain desperately, begging him to tell him what to do.
“Take the rest of the day off,” he said directly to Kraglin, “Stay in here with the boy, I’ll send someone with food later.”
Kraglin nodded running his fingers through Peter’s hair, letting the boy collapse on him sobbing.
“I’ll consider your offer boy,” he said before turning away not knowing how to handle this. The boy didn’t need to make an offer. Yondu had his heart set on making him apart of his crew long before Ego could fully remember his name and slip him his money, but handling a traumatized kid without messing him up more was something he needed to figure out before he told the boy the good news.
Battle Slaves (3)
Warnings: language, violence and injury, slavery, death,
Yondu x reader
The Vesta was already halfway across space before Rocket even touched the comm. Because when you accidentally spark a mutiny against the Captain you'd never stop being loyal to, who do you call except the one First Mate who's even more loyal than you? Tullk was still screaming mutiny when they pulled him aboard, every possible death spinning from his tongue. Oblo still had faith in his Captain. Horuz hadn't said a word. Jignt. Pjrq. Frilna. Altih. Klo. Jokls. The trail of bodies swept from space, half-frosted but still breathing.
"Welcome to the Vesta, boys." Aleta wasn't sure who's shock was the best to see. "Get yerselves cleaned up, we got yer idiot Terran ta save."
"Wit' all due disrespect, Stakar," Dabria was growling into the comm, as xie forced the ship to a faster pace, "Y'ain't ma Cap'n an' ya never will be. If I hear —"
"Stakar, darlin'," Aleta interrupted, with a warning glare, flicking the comm line over to her chair. "S'there an' issue?"
"Why're y'all followin' tha traitor's ship'n pickin' up wha' he discards?" Stakar demanded, irritably. "Udonta w're cast out fa a reason, no' jus' fer tha heck of it."
"Well, certainly seemed tae be jus' fa the heck of't," Dabria muttered, before Aleta's response was cut off by the nearby explosions ricocheting through the Eclector. A smaller carrier ship emerged from beneath it, pulling away just as the whole thing imploded.
"Yondu? Kraglin?" Dabria was immediately on the comm, trying to hear anything through the disturbed, crackling quiet.
"Presen' an' accoun'ed for," Yondu confirmed, bitterly. "But we're tha only ones."
"The others are over 'ere, love, don' worry 'bout them," xie assured him, ushering the loyal Ravagers into the hologram's range.
"I didn't know you had a lady, old man." The laughing voice which joined Yondu's over the comm was accompanied by a dark, fuzzy face, with a small tree creature on its shoulder.
"Betcha di'n't know Peter had a secon' Momma neither," Yondu answered, rolling his eyes, "I may know you, boy, but you've yet ta know me." The creature burst into raucous laughter, as Groot grumbled on his shoulder.
"Care ta introduce ya friends?" Aleta asked, joining the holographic image with a lazy flick of a switch.
"Rocket and Groot," Yondu told her, pointing at the raccoon and the tree in turn, "Part o' Peter's new boy band."
"Ah, yes, the Guardians of the Galaxy," Aleta smiled, amused, "Quite poetic. Last ones got 'emselves killed, though."
"Yea, an' these ones are 'boutta if we don' get ta Ego soon," Yondu replied, the comm image flickering. "Enough chatter, lets scram." The image disappeared with a soft putter, and Dabria rolled xir eyes, but couldn't help xir smile, standing up and resting a hand on Oblo's shoulder.
"Thank you." The weight of xir entire universe whispered through those words. "Now get yerselves down tae the med bay! C'mon!" Xie grabbed Oblo and Tullk by the collars, shoving them in front of xem, and ushering the group off the bridge. Aleta shook her head, smiling fondly at the younger First Mate.
Dumping the frost-bitten Ravagers at the med centre on Insa V had taken longer than expected, after they'd had to attach a ventilator to Oblo to keep him breathing after he'd collapsed. He had been surprisingly easy to carry, though. By the time they were back on board, Rocket's voice was already crackling over the comm.
"Stakar Ogord. Ravagers of every clan. Yondu Udonta is below us, currently, fighting Ego with the man who became his son, Terran Peter Quill." Dabria was already sprinting to the hangar, sweeping the ventilator along with her. "That planet will explode in 4 minutes, and the two of them have one space suit and one jet pack. This is your last chance to right your wrongs against him." Four minutes. Xir M ship was fast, but they were at least seven minutes away. As xie started the engine, Aleta's voice crackled over the comm.
"We're going into light speed. Arrival at Ego in one jump, three minutes." Xie breathed out, heavily, as the ship jolted forwards. "Hangar door opening now." Dabria shot from the door, catapulted forward at extra speed by the sudden stop the ship made from their jump. Couldn't see them. Couldn't see them. The planet splintered below xem.
"Vesta. Come in Vesta." Rocket's voice again. "Are they in your sights?" A ripple of movement below xem, shooting upwards from the explosion. Blue and red.
"I got 'em!" Dabria's voice cracked, relief flooding into it, as xie snatched the two men from the vacuum. Xie released the controls, racing backwards. Peter was sobbing, clinging to Yondu's frozen form.
"Peter! Peter! Hey!" Xie pried him away from the Centauri, placing the ventilator over Yondu's mouth and enabling it. "Peter, I need you tae pass me t' heatin' pads an' insulators from t' cupboard, a'right?" Peter nodded, dazedly, scrambling to his feet and reaching for the cupboard doors. Xie rolled Yondu onto his side lifting the ventilator for a moment to place a firm thump on his broad, blue back, before Quill returned with the heating pads.
"Start activating them, we want them on his chest, head, and neck. We can deal with his extremities once he's breathing again."
"Quill! Quill!" Rocket was screaming into the comm. "Old man's gal! The hell is going on?" Xie ignored the noise, massaging the heat pads into Yondu's ice-blistered chest and back.
"Will one of ya answer the bloody comm?" Peter reached for xir comm, pulling it from xir wrist and flicking it on.
"Jeez, Rocket," he breathed, laughter in his voice, fear, "Didn't know y'were so emotional. We're fine, an' 'er name's Ria." Dabria's voice crippled beside him, as xie pummelled the heat pads into Yondu's stubborn body, pushing and pushing, watching some of the ice burns dissipate and still waiting for the chest to start moving.
"Come on ya stubborn asshole!" Xie was all but screaming, pumping at his chest, not even noticing the shaking of the M ship as they were pulled back into a hangar. "Don't ya bloody dare die on me, ya blue bastard!" Aleta wrapped her arms around the screaming girl, whispering, soothing into xir long, purple hair.
"Shh, shh, I gotcha." The medic brushed past them, two of the Ravagers carrying Yondu out, as Dabria struggled to reach him. Peter couldn't move, couldn't speak, not even registering Rocket barking questions about the screaming into the comm. Dabria slowed, breath returning to xir body, screams fading. Still no tears. Xie didn't even know how to cry. Had never had the chance to learn. Xie could do nothing more than wrap Peter into xir arms, and let him cry for both of them.
"I'm so sorry, Peter."
