Greetings, beautiful MFMM fandom,

Thank you again to everyone who participated in this month's flashfic challenge, both as prompters, writers, and cheerleaders.

The challenge was such a success we're already toying with the idea of planning another one later this year, but we want to get the timing right so it works for as many people as possible.

The months we're looking at are September and October, trying to hit that sweet spot between summer plans (for the Northern hemisphere) and NaNoWriMo.

But... do we do it shortly before NaNo as a kind of warm-up exercise (for those who want to do both), or would people rather have a break in between? And then there's whumptober, which also takes up time for a lot of fic writers...

Basically, we can't decide which works better, so we decided that since Tumblr let's you do that now, we should just ask you, the possible participants.

So...

Voting in this poll doesn't mean you've signed up for anything at all, there's zero commitment involved here. This is just us asking you to help us decide what would be the best time to flash.

It began, as far too many disasters did, with the arrival of An Aunt. In this case with the indomitable termagant that was Aunt Genna Frey, née Lannister, who arrived at Jaime’s King’s Landing townhouse for their luncheon in a tizzy and an enormous fur coat.

(Technically the next is a set of drabbles from the MFMM Flashfic challenge, but there's no 'first lines' in those really)

Nobody in Melbourne is quite indelicate enough to ask why Rosie Sanderson has moved into the small house near the university, or why she shares it with a doctor who lectures there.

the road back home again - Game of Thrones, Jaime/Brienne, 27K

The Longclaw Tavern hadn’t changed. The same sawdust floors, the same shitty beer and the shelf of high quality whiskey thick with dust. Beside the bar mirror was a faded sign advertising the sourtoe cocktail, ‘the first and only in Westeros’. Jaime swilled his beer around his mouth, studied the weirwood bar heavy with water stains and pockmarks from decades of visitors to the tavern where the wilderness began.

She meets Addam over a sickbed. King's Landing is halfway to rubble when she arrives, and Jaime is halfway to death, and there's a man she's never met standing guard over them both.

Gravel crunches under the wheels of the phaeton as Jaime turns up the long driveway that leads to Baratheon Hall. Thick trees and red sunset skies give the journey the sense of another world, far removed from the bustle of King’s Landing, the march of progress. Old gas lamps spot the long length of the drive—to use electric would be crude, Cersei insists, but Jaime suspects she enjoys the power of sending them to be lit and extinguished at her will, the power to make Robert’s late night returns as difficult as possible in his drunken state.

There is much to do in the rebuilding of Winterfell, the buildings and its people both, and the war to the south still lingers; the Dragon Queen wishes to mobilise her forces and Lady Sansa does not, and it feels hours are wasted every day by their barbed insults and verbal clashes, a subtler warfare than swords and maces but just as deadly. It is that and only that which makes the people look warily out the windows as dusk falls far too early, as the wind begin to blow, bringing with it a driving snow that makes every moving shadow beyond Winterfell’s walls too reminiscent of— It is only the unease of the unknown, that is all. Still, when Brienne returns late to her quarters to find a supper of soup and fresh bread warming over the fire and Jaime in her bed…. Sometimes she is not certain that she did not die after all, and this is her reward.

Though it is summer, there is a chill in the night air that drives Brienne to sit before the fire in the Evenstar’s rooms. Her rooms. It still feels half a dream, the title; a life she had imagined abandoned when she had sailed from the island and had fallen upon her when she had not expected it. She is grateful that she need not bear it alone, for Jaime had followed her south and then into a sept, declaring what she had long known: she was his and he was hers, and together they would face the challenges to come.

Fuck loyalty. She stands there, glorious in her fury, stalwart in her declaration. Fuck loyalty. Like it is a simple request, like his loyalty is not the only virtue he has left. He might fuck his sister and try to kill a boy, he might kill a king to stop him from using wildfire and stand by when a queen does. He might be callous and sharp and rude, but he is loyal. And it means nothing to her, angry and righteous as she is, and worse still it reminds him that it is only a virtue if he is loyal to those who deserve it.

Miss Fisher’s Year of Quotes 2018

It came down to a roll of the dice, but it looks like the challenge for 2018 will be QUOTE prompts. The first step of which is soliciting quotes to use. This will work the same as last year:

You have from TODAY until DECEMBER1ST to send me quotes you would like people to use as prompts. These can be anything--a famous quote, a line of dialogue, a snippet of poetry or song lyrics. I will gently encourage you to look towards ones that can be interpreted different ways, but it’s ultimately up to you. You can submit via DM (here or on Slack), replying to this post, or reblogging this post with your quotes. PLEASE try to tag @missfisherchallenges so I don’t miss any!

Once all the quotes are submitted, twelve will be drawn at random. Then, at the start of each month in 2018, a new quote will be posted as a prompt and an ao3 collection opened up; you will have that month to create your fan work and share it. Remember, for 2018 we are encouraging any form of participation, not just fanfic! Maybe you’re an artist, or a vid-maker, or someone who enjoys writing meta thoughts on the topic. There are no rules for participating, except to have fun!

I wrote this fic in around two hours, from the tags used in the tumblr post about the flashfic challenge (read it to learn more) as an example of what the prompt-tags can look like: “Why Is This Happening?? // Domesticity // Also Cats Can Talk Now” 

So this is a fast, fun romp, a reminder of the flashfic challenge, and a test of the format we will use February 25th. I haven’t written fic in ages, so it was really fun!

The Flashfic Challenge is back!

Poor Phryne has had a bit of a shock, she just received word that the MFMM Flashfic Challenge is back!

That’s right, people of the internet, please make a note in your diaries because on 25 February 2023 we will be doing another Flashfic Challenge and we really want you all to join in.

It’s been so long since we did this, and we know that this absolutely amazing fandom has grown since the last time so let’s explain really quickly (Well, actually this does go on a bit and we’re very sorry.):

The flashfic challenge is a writing prompt challenge where members of the fandom provide prompts and then fics are written based on those prompts. Which seems simple enough, but that’s not really how we roll, so there’s more:

Fic writers only have 2 hours from when they receive their prompts until they must have posted their fics on AO3. (Which explains why Phryne looks so worried.)

Because the fandom is spread all over the globe, we run 4 heats so we hopefully have one at a time of day that works for most people:

Time slot 1: 10am GMT / 2am PST / 5am EST / 11am CET / 9pm AEDT Time slot 2: 4pm GMT / 8am PST / 11am EST / 5pm CET / 3am AEDT (Sunday) Time slot 3: 10pm GMT / 2pm PST / 5pm EST / 11pm CET / 9am AEDT (Sunday) Time slot 4: 4am GMT (Sunday) / 8pm PST / 11pm EST / 5am CET (Sunday) / 3am AEDT (Sunday)

Prompts are submitted by members of the fandom - you don’t need to submit prompts in order to write, and you aren’t excluded from writing if you do submit some. You can do one or the other or both. (Yes, it is also okay to just submit prompts.) We then divvy up the prompts so we have a reasonable amount for each heat and then prompt lists are published when each heat begins.

There are 2 ways to receive the prompts: You can follow this blog, where they’ll be posted when the heat begins, or you can sign up to receive the prompts for whatever heats you want by email. Signing up for prompt emails does NOT mean you’re obligated to write anything, it just means you’ll receive the prompts and what happens next is 100% your business. If you want the prompts by email, just send a message to mfmmflashchallenge@gmail.com no later than February 22nd and let us know which heat(s) you’d like us to email you and that’s it.

Each heat has its own collection on AO3 where writers can publish their fics, and those collections all close when their respective heats end, so after the two hours are over. Because writing can be stressful and sometimes it takes longer or life gets in the way mid-heat, we also have a flash free collection where any fics that are completed later can be published. That collection will not close at any point and can be added to whenever you want.

Each flashfic challenge has a theme for the prompts and this time the theme is AO3 tags. That means anything you could imagine being a tag on AO3, so either a warning label, a descriptive tag, or a more random freeform tag. Anything goes and feel free to get creative! We’re asking for these tags in sets of three, so for example: “Why Is This Happening?? // Domesticity // Also Cats Can Talk Now” Writers can of course add as many of their own tags to their fics as they want, all we ask is that you use all three tags in the set you choose, and that they apply to your fic in some way.

We’d love it if you send us your prompts no later than February 20th by emailing mfmmflashchallenge@gmail.com. (And you can send as many sets as you’d like!)

Hopefully that’s it - the only rule that’s left is: Have fun! It’s fine if your version of fun is the traditional writer’s agony, obviously! (And we’re not thinking of anyone in particular as we type that. At all.)

Oh, yes, and the most important rule of all: It doesn’t matter if you’re new to the fandom or new to ficcing, or if you just arrived here and you don’t know anyone yet, or you used to hang out here but haven’t been back for ages. Everyone is welcome and we’d LOVE for you to join us in this madness! Submit prompts, write fic, and (hopefully) READ fic.

Phrack: Time Travel AU, please? :)

Ok so, I actually wrote a time traveler AU for the last FlashFic challenge -  Jack to the Future - and I kinda love it and miiiiiight continue it in the future (ahem) so I’m going to cheat a little here and give you some of my headcanons about its continuation instead.

WARNING - HERE BE SPOILERS FOR THE STORY LINKED TO ABOVE IF YOU HAVEN’T READ IT YET AND CARE ABOUT THAT SORT OF THING!

1. Despite some immediate and powerful chemistry, Phryne and Jack initially chafe against each other professionally — she wants to just jump in and start saving everybody, while Jack urges patience and strategy. It takes them a long time to reach a compromise and a working rapport, and Phryne is arrested at least once more before they do.

2. It is not their shared history (future?) that causes Phryne to fall in love with Jack, but rather coming to realize that he is a man so committed to helping people that, stranded in the past with knowledge enough to retire comfortably, he chose instead to become a police officer, the only position in 1918 he felt would allow him to really do that.

3. Once they begin a romantic relationship, they are both all in.

4. There is a really heartbreaking (to me) conversation, late at night in bed, where Jack tells Phryne about what happened to all the Variables that travelled back with him.

5. They both fly to Europe in 1929 to start tagging people before WWII.

6. Neither of them ever get back to the future.
