Tony’s Childhood. Part 1: Identifying facts

In the MCU, Tony sometimes acts like a kid. There is a reason behind every behavior, so I wondered what it was like for him when he was a real kid.

So, the questions of the day: what do we know about Tony's childhood? Did he have one? And, most importantly, how did it affect him?

Let’s first list what we know from the movies:

At age 4 Tony built his first circuit board (IM1)

At age 6 built his first engine (IM1)

Was sent to a boarding school by Howard (IM2)

Cracked the Pentagon’s firewall in high school on a dare (AoU)

Had a nanny until the age of 14 (IM3)

Went to college at 14 (IM1)

Built Dum-E and U when he was there (IM1)

At 17 graduated summa cum laude from MIT (IM1)

Continued his education until his parents’ death (CW)

Tony’s genius gave him two things: the brain and the pain. And by the pain, I mean that instead of interacting and bonding with his parents, enjoying life, playing, having fun, making friends, taking care of pets, and all the other things children do to gradually prepare for adulthood and grow up "healthy", he got this list of achievements. That doesn’t make a person normal.

Parents

We know his relationship with Howard was complicated. Howard loved him in his own way. He had too many things to do to be a good father: SI, S.H.I.E.L.D., scientific projects, trying to build a better future with clean energy, etc. All good, except when you want your child to love you back. Especially if in the tiny amount of time you spend with him, you don’t show him any signs of affection.

What do we know about Maria? Her name, what she looked like, that she played the piano, and died at Winter Soldier’s hand on Dec 16, 1991. That’s it. She didn’t spend much time with Tony either. Remember, he even had a nanny, instead of a mother. Tony's words about her showed that he loved her, but he didn't talk much about her. Because she wasn’t present in his life enough. Why? Because…

School

Howard sent Tony to a boarding school.

Here’s in the S.H.I.E.L.D.s file we have this information about the school:

“Phillips Academy, Andover, MA 1977-1984”

This means he was there from age 7 to 14. Howard sent him to a boarding school when he was SEVEN.

Phillips Academy Andover serves grades 9-12 only (it is a college preparatory school). Thus, either this is a mistake by the creators of the film/file, or Tony, due to his genius, became an exception. Since the early age he was already at school was also mentioned in IM2 tie-in comics, and in Earth-616 that was also 7, we can mark 1977-1984 as valid.

Think about it again: Tony was sent to boarding school in another state when he was 7 years old. He spent another 7 years there, alone, among high school-aged teenagers. No parents around, no peers.

For example, even Hogwarts accepts 11-year-old children, and they live with their peers. Now imagine Harry Potter, at the age of 7, is thrown into a dorm with 7th-year students and locked there. Doesn’t make a person normal either, does it?

Nannies and Jarvis

Since Tony was at the boarding school, there are two options for how he could have a nanny (mentioned in IM3) and spend time with Edwin Jarvis:

1) He was at the boarding school with a nanny. There is almost no possibility that the nanny was Edwin Jarvis because Jarvis was Howard’s butler and had other responsibilities.

2) He had a nanny at home in the summer and during short school breaks. In this case, his parents couldn’t even give him this little of their precious time.

In any case, he could only see Jarvis at home, a few months a year at most.

Note: There is a date error in IM3, stating Tony was 14 in 1983. This is clearly an error and we can omit this detail.

Bullying

Remember this dialog between Tony and Harley in IM3?

0:45:15 – Harley asks him how he knew he was being bullied at school. Tony doesn't answer. He gives him a non-lethal flash thing to "discourage bullying."

We see that Tony knew exactly what was going on with Harley at school. Because that’s exactly what happened to him there. Harley reminded him of himself. Brilliant kid with no friends and practically no parents. He was bullied by 9th-12th graders.

If he had a nanny with him at the school, that probably made things even worse. He would be bullied because he has a nanny, and despite he has one to look after him.

Hamilton

look. You don’t need to like Hamilton but you have to appreciate the hidden double meanings. Here are some of them:

-We fought with him-this one is an obvious one, Lafayette and mulligan/Jefferson and Madison. This line can be interpreted in two ways. One, Lafayette and mulligan fought together with Hamilton. They fought with him. Jefferson and Madison, they fought against him, they fought with him as well. But in an entirely different way.

-Me, I died for him-Lauren’s and Phillip. Two people that Hamilton loved and cared for. Lauren’s died in South Carolina, but before that, he duelled Charles Lee for Hamilton. Lauren’s risked a bullet for Hamilton, a man he loved and respected. Phillip took a bullet to preserve his father’s honour. He fought eacker knowing that he might not make it out alive. When he was dying, his first concern was making sure his father was proud of him.

-Me, I loved him-this is sung by all three of the schuyler sisters. Separately, but together. Eliza and Angelica each loved Hamilton privately and separately. Peggy/Maria. Peggy loved Hamilton as a brother in law and a friend. Maria, on the other hand loved Hamilton. She did not want to betray him. Remember, she was a victim. Only 26 and looking after her child. James Reynolds was abusive. Maria truly loved Hamilton, if only secretly.

Royal Hat Appreciation (356/∞)

So I'm a fan of Hamilton but not of its treatment of women generally. The fact that Maria was only included as much as she needed to be for Hamilton's side of the story and the most sympathy she gets is Eliza referring to her pretty neutrally isn't great, but it really shocks me that her divorce from her abusive husband wasn't given so much as a throwaway line, especially considering that Burr was her divorce lawyer. A major character was involved in her getting free from her abusive husband and that still wasn't enough for that event to be mentioned anywhere in Hamilton. Even if Burr wasn't involved it's still very weird and honestly upsetting to me that this woman who is being abused is introduced, used only to fuel the male main character's arc and subsequently the impact it has on those around him, and then dropped from the plot without even a blink and you miss it reference to her divorce from her abusive husband.

The audience is apparently expected to be concerned about what's going on with Hamilton when the question of Maria's fate has been left completely up in the air. If I didn't know already that Maria was able to escape that relationship I would be completely preoccupied with what happened to her and not care at all about anything else because none of it matters in comparison. Obviously I feel a lot of sympathy for Eliza and Angelica and I do care about their suffering in the wake of Hamilton's mistakes, but if I didn't know what happened to Maria I probably wouldn't be able to care very much because 'my bitchass husband/brother in law had an affair and then publicized it' is a much smaller problem than 'I am actively being abused and one of the men who took advantage of me published a pamphlet about it.'

Also lmao @ Theodosia Sr.'s death only being mentioned tangentially through Burr trying to justify his murder of Hamilton by saying that he can't let him make an orphan out of his (21 year old) daughter. I wanted to end off this post by saying something like 'Maria x Burr ftw' but that feels out of place now somehow. I still ship them tbh. He helped her get a divorce from her abusive husband and then killed another guy who took advantage of her, it's a pretty good ship.

So I was at the dentist today and while waiting for my turn my mind started brainstorming out of nowhere and then bam. i made a note full of characters that i think would fit the roles of the characters from sonic.

What was bugging me though was the fact pablo could basically fit all roles of sonic, shadow, and silver. kiesha would make a good sonic as well as jocinda 😭 now im stuck between these three and what fits them better (if anyone could help that be awesome ty💗)

For the rest is just me lowballing it but I think some of these make sense.. for the random ones like the babylon rogues to me it'd just be funny for reese, stephanie and mikey having the worse communication together

1730 Tea Party at Lord Harrington's by C. Phillips detail (Yale Center for British Art, Yale University - New Haven, Connecticut, USA). Probably from Wikimedia; fixed spots with Pshop 1247X1623. There are many caps and veils, square necklines, and laced bodices with revers. But full-blown panniers are not to be seen.

1730 Marquise de Gueydan as Flora by Nicolas de Largillière (Musée Granee - Aix-en-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France).
