Victoria Duchess of Kent
Artist: George Hayter (British, 1792–1871)
Title: Victoria, Duchess of Kent (1786-1861)
Genre: Portrait
Date: 1835
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Royal Collection Trust
Description
Victoria, Duchess of Kent, was Princess Victoria's mother. She is depicted wearing a formal day dress with a shawl and feathered hat, and with a spaniel, possibly Dash, running beside her. Sittings took place in the early months of 1834, and the painting was presented to the Princess 'though not quite ready' on her fifteenth birthday. On 23 April 1836 she wrote in her Journal 'My full-length portrait of Mamma done by George Hayter has been hung up in my study and looks so well. It is so like & is so beautifully painted.'
The artist made a number of changes (pentimenti) such as the outline of the feather in the hat, which was originally larger, and the outline of the left shoulder and the shawl over the left arm, which originally projected further.

Portrait of Elizabeth, Lady Webster
Artist: Louis Gauffier (French, 1762–1801)
Title: Portrait of Elizabeth, Lady Webster, Later Lady Holland, in a White Dress with her Spaniel Pierrot
Date: circa 1795
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Private Collection
Portrait of Lady Webster
Gauffier painted the present portrait, one of the most compelling likenesses of his Florentine period, two years after he had settled in the Arno City. Elizabeth Vassall, successively Lady Webster and Lady Holland (1771-1845), was the only child of Richard Vassall, who owned extensive estates in Jamaica. In 1786 she married Sir Geoffrey Webster, Bt. of Battle Abbey (1748-1800). In June 1791 Lady Webster left England for Paris. She subsequently travelled extensively, accompanied at times by her husband, briefly visiting Florence in June 1793. She returned to the city on 8 January 1794, leaving some five weeks later for Rome and Naples, but was back in Florence in June, remaining in Tuscany for over a year. Her marriage, never happy, broke down irretrievably in 1795, and Henry Richard Fox, 3rd Lord Holland, whom she met on his Grand Tour in January 1794, was widely known to be her lover: following the birth of their son and her divorce in 1796, they married in July 1797. Lady Holland was to become one of the most forceful women of her generation, and it was due in large measure to her personality that Holland House had so central a place in political and intellectual life until her husband's death in 1840.

Again, for my game on Saturday Afternoons, I am doing portraits for important NPCs. Artemis herself, is an important NPC for the party. She finds herself as a bit of a supplier of Jobs for them, and she got them into The No Man's - a city build out of ancient ruins and a last chance settlement for Thieves, Murderers, and all other sorts of criminals that the rest of the major city states of The World That Remains' wont take.
Artemis herself is a sky-pirate, and a captain at that, running a group of pirates named The Contemporaries. Her group of pirates fights against the winged nobility of the shattered world and tries to make a less than legal attempt to bring about changes in society regarding classism. As much as her intentions in this are good, she is still a criminal - stealing, raiding, and killing from nobleman's elite guarded ships if she feels she needs to.
Some people of the party are more wary of her - even if she hasn't done anything to them, others trust her maybe a little too much having only spoken to her a handful of times, so it is definitely an interesting dynamic between the whole group. She's also found out during the last session that the party at the very least believes that they are on a mission to save the world, whether she believes that's true or not she knows that they do believe it. There still are several things about Artemis herself that the party hasn't learned yet, and I look forward to them learning more about their piratical employer.
Its still fun to remember that originally she was my character for a crime based Dungeons and Dragons game, too. I liked her so much that I knew I would have to bring her back at some point. :3
