One of the brighter members of the Virgo Cluster, M58 is a barred spiral galaxy. In other words, it is a spiral galaxy, but instead of a spherical bulge at its center, it has a bar-shaped structure at its center. About two-thirds of all spiral galaxies in the local universe have bars, including (perhaps) our own Milky Way.

This relies on "the Tyranids are running from something" being true buuuut hewwego

The Tyranids are the fused biomass of an entire galactic population fleeing an unknown threat that was deleting whole swaths of spacetime from their galaxy. With no way to stop, predict, or even understand the threat, they pooled their resources and became the Hive Mind, storing every person's personality and memories in a massive collective consciousness redundantly backed up across an enormous fleet of hive ships. Biotech was the preferred technology of a few of the spacefaring species of this original galaxy, and the meeting of leaders in response to the vanishing stars settled on a biotech escape system because it could self-repair, refuel with just about any resource imaginable, adapt to unforeseen but mundane challenges, pull new societies into the hive to save them from The Vanishing, and conserve every molecule of resource they get their tendrils on. They scoured their entire home galaxy of every last scrap of biomass and got the FUCK outta Dodge.

Their end goal is to consume everyone and everything in the Laniakea Supercluster, book it across the Local Void to Perseus-Pisces, begin reseeding every ecosystem and civilization they ate in an inversion of their planetary consumption processes, and hope like hell The Vanishing can't travel those kinds of distances.

The big canonical Hive Fleets' intelligence is comprised almost wholly of military tactics, science, a little bit of diplomacy, and the primary objective of the Hive, while the greater Hive Mind lurks just outside the galaxy because they absolutely cannot afford the risk of losing data on the cultures, ecosystems, and people's actual minds to battle. Communication with Milky Way locals has failed utterly, unfortunately, so the Hive must use force in order to consume and record the peoples of the Milky Way.

There are a number of things in 40k lore that the known canonical Tyranids have avoided eating (the Ymgarl Genestealers, the toxic sludge remnants of Hesp, etc.). There are specialist fleets that are designed to reclaim and reabsorb otherwise-hazardous biomass, but these fleets cannot be deployed until military resistance throughout the galaxy has been crushed and total consumption is assured. Some of these specialist fleets might also be better at communicating with the locals, but alas, multiple galaxies' worth of people are backed up in massive spacefaring brains, and it is ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE that this particular biomass remain as unharmed as possible. Specialist fleets are on standby until resistance has been dealt with.

They are consistently frustrated with the Imperium's totalitarian enforcement of its laws and faith, because they're dimly aware that the Emperor wants to advance humanity's evolution into something psychically independent from the Warp. The Tyranids already are, and would gladly offer it to them post-reseeding if they would just put their damn bolters down!

Alright Warhammer fans, what's that one theory you've come up with? That one you need a tinfoil hat, several cans of energy drinks and an extremely loose view of the lore to come up with?

My big one is piggybacking off of the idea that the Tyranids are a creation of the Old Ones. But it goes a step further.

Basically, the theory goes that a handful of Old Ones survived The War in Heaven and it's aftermath and are the main controllers of the Hive Mind. Their psychic powers were supposed to be OP as fuck so I figure them putting their minds together, metaphorically and literally, could allow them some level of great control over the Tyranids.

My reasoning behind this theory is that the Old Ones fled to another far-away Galaxy and created the Tyranids specifically as one big recycling force specially designed to combat the main threats of the Milky Way to create a clean slate for the Old Ones to work with.

Shadow in the Warp to suppress Warp Entities and Eldar, Consumption of Biomass to slow down and negate Krork population growth and the literal Million, Billion, Trillion, Quadrillions of Nids to fight the Necrons because they're also extremely OP and a War of Attrition is your best bet to win.

Of course, there are massive holes to poke in this theory. "How did the Old Ones move around unnoticed without the Webway and attracting Daemons? How did they acquire enough biomass in a relatively short amount of time to create the whole Tyranid force? The Nids exhibit X, Y, Z traits that imply they're not being controlled like this at all." This is just a fun but stupid theory I like to think about sometimes.

I found an oldie desktop tower in the garage from when I was in like . Idk some point in middleschool?

I had to track it down a little but it's a "Lenovo ThinkCentre Desktop Intel M58" or, at least, the case/shell is. A couple of parts must've been refurbished when I bought it but carbon dating says it's from 2008 and probably refurbished circa 2014 when I got it from walmart.

WHAT a PRETTY BIRD, as a kid I didn't value some of this enough but I'm glad young honk was anal about preserving hardware. It's got a disk tray (in the year of 2024), 2tb storage, and 8gb ram. This thing is going to make an amazing media centre. It wasn't properly booting at first but I think that's due to windows crapping out.

Fun fact, when I got it, it didn't have a licensed version of windows despite saying "comes with win10" on the order. I was going to change it to a linux distro but it's funny that now I HAVE to.

Expect me to spend time with this instead of art for while.

AITA for killing a man in front of an audience because he was the owner of a death ring? (And for wanting to traumatize a bunch of rich snobs)

I (M58) am a pretty famous person, you might know me as Dethra, the big scary robot from the organisation Hemalog. I'm one of the leaders.

So the other day, me, my friend Luce (F69) and our teams (alpha and beta this time) were paying a visit to another death ring. As you might know, if you regularly catch up with the news, we get rid of them. In other words, we more often than not slaughter people like pigs. (Which is not an entirely bad thing btw). We do it for the good of other people. Imagine if your friend or partner got kidnapped one day, was forced to fight to death against another person and sooner or later was killed. You wouldn't like that, would you?

Well, we don't either.

So, that day I stepped into that ring, told the two robots who were forced to fight to stop and leave. Then this small little rich ugly bastard came up to me and poked me with his gross finger. I recognized him as the owner of that filthy place, so I didn't make it a long process. I grabbed his head and slowly closed my hand around him until his head popped. Of course the audience, that was just watching robots, people, fight to their death, was forced to watch it all. Moments ago they were just laughing and cheering, and suddenly they were crying and begging. Really gave them a taste of their own medicine. (We kept them alive btw, we don't just kill everybody).

So, am I the asshole?

M58 // CrestwoodSky

M58 has the distinction of being the most distant object in Messier's catalog, being about 62 million light years away. Although you can see its star-forming spiral arms clearly in this image, it is a relatively anemic galaxy with a low rate of star formation. This is likely caused by its interaction with the surrounding intracluster medium, the gas that fills the space between galaxies in the Virgo Cluster.

AITA for locking up my addicted brother to force him to detox?

So I (30M) recently found out that my brother (26M) is an addict. Honestly he’d been acting weird for a while, normally we share everything with each other, but he was being cagey and keeping secrets, and he’s been in a relationship with this girl (???F) that I hate who I found out is also his dealer that got him hooked on the stuff. So I called up our friend (M58) and we tricked him into a room where we locked him up to force him to detox. He just needs to get it out of his system, and I can’t trust him to make choices on his own anymore. It’s not him anymore. He’s been screaming a lot ever since we shut him in there, I think he might be hallucinating from the withdrawal. My friend is worried that it could kill him, but I won’t give him the drugs even if it does. I won’t let him do this to himself anymore. My friend is very unhappy with me. AITA?
