The Rise Of A Legend by Kathryn Lasky REVIEW

5/5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Phenomenal. I had read the entire Ga'hoole and Beyond series before I knew this book existed. I found it when I decided I want to rebuy the entire Ga'hoole series one day. I had to add this one to my collect, I've been a Ga'hoole fan since I was a kid. I'm only now getting around to reading this book and I was immediately placed right back into the world of Ga'hoole as if I never left.

Although the plot seemed rushed, it flowed wonderfully. The reader gets to see Lyze's life from hatchling to his battle life to his life at the Ga'hoole tree. The story is action packed. We meet some of Lyze's friends, his mate, and Octavia the snake. I absolutely loved it. I makes me want to reread the series, or maybe finish the Bears of the Ice series.

How could Clover's skirt cause pain to her broken tail in that scenario?

Warning: Discussion of injury and self-mutilation ahead, as well as SPOILERS (I'd call it minor, or at least non-detailed) for the Guardians of Ga'hoole book, "The Rise of a Legend".

I'm not thinking so much that the skirt itself causes pain. Although having the skin pull on the injured spot might hurt a little.

I'm thinking more like a Lyze of Kiel situation, from the aforementioned book. (For context, he is an owl.) In that book, one of his toes/talons gets injured and causes him chronic pain. So he rips it off.

Clover is no stranger to pain--She can and will handle it in bursts. But I can see her getting fed up with chronic pain, especially if she sees a way out of it.

Alternatively, maybe something else ripped off her tail and part of the skirt, so she decided to finish the job.

This au has a playlist! By me. On youtube. It is a work in progress and it is mostly shanties now (becase of Ezylryb. He taught his chaw the shanties. This man knows so many shanties and you cannot change my mind). Song suggestions are very welcome!

Every time the collier/all-weather chaw has to camp out near the shores of Hoolemere after a training flight, there is a shanty singing session (temporarily abandoned during the Siege). Otulissa went from a miserable bundle of feathers tapping her foot to the beat to a shanty enjoyer - almost smacking Soren with a rare edition of "Shanties and somgs of the Northern Kingdoms" penned by Lyze of Kiel at one point because Soren is very dense and doesn't pick up that Ezylryb is prepairing him to take over as the new shantyowl.

"Hell's coming with me" by Poor man's poison but it is Striga and Coryn summoning Theo's ghost specifically to yell at him (may or may not spiral into Striga burning the Panqua palace down via Desolation powers)

"Pressure cracks", also by Poor man's poison, but it is Penryck and Ullryck going their separate ways. No, I don't ship them, I headcanon them as bi/ace solidarity friendship. I want to see ending friendship get the same gravity that romantic heartbreak gets in songs. Also, they both said a version of "Go ahead, make my day, punk!" at some point in my headcanon.

Thora Plonk lives. She's scarred and marked by The Slaughter, but she lives and kicks ass.

Kludd chose his part. Soren chose his. There was never any way to turn back.

Every dozen times they played their games of Guardians and villains, Kludd would finally be in a good enough mood to indulge them. Usually, it was when their parents were already out (because letting them see him act so childish would be humiliating.)

Kludd always donned Metal Beak’s guise opposite Soren’s Lyze of Kiel. The false beak was getting too small for him nowadays. Kludd had a better screech for the role, more developed than Soren’s, who never wanted to be Metal Beak anyway.

Kludd almost didn’t mind that it meant he had to lose at the end every time. Almost.

It had been years, horrible bloody battles between them, a few more scars dealt each time.

Didn’t Soren look every bit the Guardian now in his gleaming battle claws and helmet?

Kludd screeched, the sound awful and broken through his burned beak. He attacked with a murderous fury that Soren, after all this time, still wouldn’t match. He wouldn’t fight Kludd as his enemy, only as his brother.

One of these days, Kludd would show him how stupidly naive he was. It would only take one moment’s hesitation, one well-placed strike of his talons.

And finally, he would win.
