Halton House

Hi guys!!

I'm sharing Halton House. This is the 15th building for my English Collection and the second Rothchild house I recreated.

I decorated some interiors for reference, but I could not find the real distribution of the house, so I just worked with pictures I found.

You might be familiar to the central hall and stairs, as they are the ones used for Bridgerton House in the series.

I chose to build the version with the conservatory, as I think this was a glory lost to time.

History of the house: Halton House is a country house in the Chiltern Hills above the village of Halton in Buckinghamshire, England. It was built for Alfred Freiherr de Rothschild between 1880 and 1883. It is used as the main officers' mess for RAF Halton and is listed Grade II* on the National Heritage List for England.

There has been a manor house at Halton since the Norman Conquest, when it belonged to the Archbishop of Canterbury. Thomas Cranmer sold the manor to Henry Bradshaw, Solicitor-General in the mid-16th century. After remaining in the Bradshaw family for some considerable time, it was sold to Sir Francis Dashwood in 1720 and was then held in the Dashwood family for almost 150 years.

The site of the old Halton House, or Manor, was west of the church in Halton village. It had a large park, which was later bisected by the Grand Union Canal. In June 1849 Sir George Dashwood auctioned the contents and, in 1853, the estate was sold to Lionel Freiherr de Rothschild.

Lionel then left the estate to his son Alfred Freiherr de Rothschild in 1879. At this time the estate covered an approximately 1,500-acre (610-hectare) triangle between Wendover, Aston Clinton, and Weston Turville.

It is thought the architect was William R. Rodriguez (also known as Rogers), who worked in the design team of William Cubitt and Company, the firm commissioned to build and oversee the project in 1880. Just three years later the house was finished.

The house was widely criticised by members of the establishment. The architect Eustace Balfour, a nephew of the Marquess of Salisbury, described it as a "combination of French Chateau and gambling house", and one of Gladstone's private secretaries called it an "exaggerated nightmare".

At Halton all were entertained by Alfred Freiherr de Rothschild. However, Halton's glittering life lasted less than thirty years, with the last party being in 1914 at the outbreak of World War I. Devastated by the carnage of the war, Freiherr de Rothschild's health began to fail and he died in 1918. Alfred had no legitimate children, so the house was bequeathed to his nephew Lionel Nathan de Rothschild. He detested the place and sold the contents at auction in 1918. The house and by now diminished estate were purchased for the Royal Air Force by the Air Ministry for what was even then a low price of £115,000 (equivalent to £7.08 million in 2023 pounds).

Architecture

For the style of the house Alfred was probably influenced by that of plans for the nearly completed Waddesdon Manor, the home of Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, his brother-in law. While not so large there is a resemblance, but other continental influences appear to have crept in: classical pediments jut from mansard roofs, spires and gables jostle for attention, and the whole is surmounted by a cupola. The front of the house features a porte-cochère. A Rothschild cousin described it as: "looking like a giant wedding cake".

If the outside was extravagant, the interior was no anti-climax. The central hall (not unlike the galleried two-storey hall at Mentmore Towers) was furnished as the "grand salon". Two further drawing rooms (the east and west) continued the luxurious theme. The dining and billiards rooms too were furnished with 18th-century panelling and boiseries. The theme continued up the grand, plaster panelled staircase to the bedrooms. The whole was furnished in what became known as "Le Style Rothschild", that is, 18th-century French furniture, boulle, ebony, and ormolu, complemented by Old Masters and fine porcelain.

A huge domed conservatory known as the winter garden was attached to the house.

The 170-Foot Sailing Yacht 'Reposado'

'Reposado' is available for charter in the Med, with rates starting at roughly $146,800 per week.

The custom 170-footer, which was recently delivered by Tramontana and listed for charter with IYC, combines the cruising capabilities of a high-tech sailer with the lavish amenities of a luxury superyacht.

Penned by the Croatian yard’s in-house team, Reposado features a sleek, contemporary exterior and an expansive, light-filled interior. The vessel is centered around a generous main salon that showcases elegant decor and bespoke furniture inspired by nature. The warm, inviting space is adorned with a plush L-shaped sofa, a coffee table, and a sophisticated bar from which you can enjoy your favorite reposado. Forward of the salon lies a formal dining area with a custom 12-seat table.

The Reposado can sleep 12 in six convertible cabins. Both the owner’s suite and the VIP measure the full width of the 28-foot beam. Seafarers (and any furry friends) will be attended to by a highly experienced crew of 10.

The exterior decks are geared toward entertaining. The sundeck is adorned with a wet bar, a fire pit, and an alfresco dining table at one end and a huge lounge at the other. Toward the center of the deck, an eight-seat Jacuzzi and sizeable sun pad sit beneath one of the two towering masts. At the aft, Reposado is outfitted with a giant beach club that gives guests direct access to the sea. The vessel also has a full arsenal of water toys, including a chase boat and Jet Skis.

In terms of grunt, Reposado is powered by twin Caterpillar C18 engines that enable a cruising speed of 12 knots and a top speed of 14 knots.

Shenzi's Den

Lost in busily regretting every life choice that has led him here, Zazu nearly misses the building.

The skies open up just as he enters the upscale apartment building; pouring bucket after bucket of rain onto the pavement outside as he glances around the foyer, trying to find the elevators without making eye contact with anyone. 

It’s a nice place. A very nice one, all cool grays and muted accents and paneled walls. There aren’t any signs, which Zazu could really make use of, but he manages to locate the elevators after a surreptitious bout of glancing around. 

Stepping into an unoccupied lift, he consults his phone for the fifth time.

4th floor suite B, 2nd door after you turn left

Thanks a lot, Sarabi. 

He reaches the fourth floor without incident, turns left, and there’s the door. Zazu listens carefully, hoping for a clue as to what he might find inside, and then sighs deeply.

He knocks.

Silence.

He waits ten seconds and knocks again.

The door swings open, and Zazu nearly drops his file.

Skull-shaped clips is the first thing he registers, hot pink and thoroughly incongruous, nestled in Scar’s hair and pinning the long locks back from his face. Open-collar white shirt is next, followed by fang necklace and-

“Zazu?” Scar's usual drawl is slightly nonplussed, effectively jolting the advisor back into the present. He blinks. “To what do I owe this unexpected pleasure?”

Oh. Right. Zazu holds out the file, hoping his hands aren’t shaking. “I’m just here to drop this off.”

Scar makes no move to take the papers. “On a weekend? Do you ever stop working?”

“I- y-" With a monumental effort, Zazu gathers his shredded composure. “I will have you know that I wasn’t doing anything else today anyway and Sarabi asked me to give you these. Which, I might add, she says you left in the office last week.”

Scar’s lips form a thoughtful moue. Zazu fixes his attention very firmly on a particularly fascinating section of doorpost.

“Never mind. Well, come in. I’ve got company at the moment, so what’s one more?”

“I’ve got to get going.”

“You just said you weren’t doing anything else today.”

And with that, he saunters back into the apartment, not bothering to look and see if Zazu is following him. 

Zazu follows anyway. 

The place isn’t decorated in as modern a style as downstairs, but it’s certainly no less elegant. Zazu tries not to peer too obviously about. Deep green carpeting, clawed furniture in a luxurious dark wood, several rare-looking volumes on the bookshelf near the window against the far wall. An expensive-looking camera on a tripod in the middle of the room, standing a few feet away from a salon chair and a small, high worktable heaped with what looks like cosmetics and makeup tools. Shenzi’s puttering around these last three; Ed is on the floor tinkering with some black plastic strips and wires and a small remote.

“You’ll have to excuse the mess,” Scar says, gesturing at his other two visitors and then, somewhat ruefully, at his head. “And these clips. I’m just helping Shenzi with a little project.”

Zazu coughs. “I… see.”

“You know, it was only yesterday that Mufasa was encouraging me to ‘stop spending so much time cooped up all by yourself’. Here I am, hosting not two but three workmates in a single day. I can just imagine how proud he’s going to be.”

“Scar, whattaya doin’- hey!”

A weak greeting is all Zazu can manage before a bolt of lightning streaks across the window, its intensity matched only by the glare of sheer annoyance that Shenzi levels at him. Ed looks up and waves. 

“What’s he doin’ here?” Shenzi whines.

“The poor thing is being worked to the bone,” Scar replies briskly, sauntering over to the salon chair and perching himself on one of the armrests. “And to think it’s begun to rain- we can’t possibly let him out in such a downpour. Make yourself at home, Zazu.”

“I really need to get going.”

“But Scaaar, we were doin’ a video,” Shenzi complains. “My viewers are countin' on me! Do you know-“ she turns to Zazu- “how long I’ve been workin’ on gettin’ him to agree to be in this makeup demo?!”

“I really can’t imagine, but-”

“You can stand here.” She steers Zazu behind the tripod with a surprising amount of force. “Make sure nothin’ weird gets on camera, okay? Like if somethin’ happens in the background or out the window or whatever. Then we can stop and do a retake.”

“I’m hardly qualified to babysit a cosmetics tutorial,” Zazu says tartly and, if he’s being honest, just a little desperately.

“Yeah, well, neither is Banzai, not that he showed up to help. So it’s gotta be you. Aren’t you, like, super good at catchin’ mistakes? C’mon! Don’tcha wanna watch me turn Scar into a-“

“No, I most decidedly do not!”

Scar pouts. “Zazu, you wound me.”

Shenzi grabs the back of the chair, shoves Scar into it, and spins it around so Scar’s facing away from the camera. “Less chatter and more makeup-in’, guys. Scar, no movin’ till I say, remember? Hey, Zaz, we’re already rollin’, right?”

“What- live? Shenzi, I did not agree to-"

“Nah, we’re gonna edit it all together at the end. Ya don’t even have to be in it, so can you please chill out already? Okidoke, Ed, hit it!”

Ed presses a button on his remote, and neon-green smoke spirals forth from the black strips on the floor. 

“Hey hey heyyy, whassup and welcome back to Shenzi’s Den! It’s ya girl, the fierce, the fabulous, the bone-afide beauty Shenzi Marie, coming at’cha again with some hot new stylin’ tips on this rainy Sunday. As you might’a noticed, we’re not actually in my den today... and that’s ‘cause I’ve got a suuuuuuper special surprise for my favorite viewers! Well, not so much a surprise if you read the video title. Can you say... guest! Of! Honor?!”

Ed hits the fog machine again. Zazu has to admit the overall effect is impressive.

“Yeah, that’s right! We got a brand-new canvas to play with today. Wanna say hi, Scar?”

Scar spins around to face the camera, raising one hand and wiggling his fingers in a leisurely wave. “Hello, YouTube.”

He winks at the camera, making eye contact with Zazu, and smirks. 

“So remember that lewk y’all have been beggin’ me to try out?" Shenzi grins into the camera and begins ticking off on her fingers. "Dramatic, edgy, bone-chillin’ fierce? I’ve just been waitin’ for this guy-" she thumps both hands onto Scar’s shoulders- “to finally let me show him off a little. We’re talking smoky, sultry, angles, color, the whooooole shebang! So it’s everyone’s lucky day, especially his-" she claps Scar on the shoulders again- “because this look is gonna knock your socks off!”

“Explains where all my laundry has been going,” Scar drawls, and Shenzi cackles. 

“Yeah, yeah. Personally I think the dryer’s out to get me, and Banzai has this whole conspiracy about aliens. Okidoke! So first we’re gonna do some moisturizin’. We’ve got the same sponge as last time, link in the description below, but always make sure ya clean it off well in between uses...”

She reaches for one of the innumerable pots on the little table and begins smearing white stuff onto Scar’s face. 

Much of what follows flies entirely over Zazu’s head. He has no idea what ‘priming’ and ‘foundation’ are, or why ‘matte’ versus ‘gloss’ matters, but he certainly gets some of it; Shenzi’s delighted exclamations about her favorite Outlander Eyeliner that she’s planning to use (“ We’re talkin’ black as my soul on a Monday mornin’, people!”), and as for “these cheekbones could cut glass! ”, well. 

“Now onto my favorite part! We’re really gonna make these peepers pop. Gonna be using this palette here for that olive-gold royal vibe with a little emerald smoke for flavor, and of course, we’re gonna highlight that signature scar."

“Ah, yes, my pièce de résistance.” Scar lets his eyes fall shut. “Smoke away.”

Blacks, browns, golds, and greens fly from Shenzi’s brushes. Zazu sincerely hopes nothing has been happening in the window that he’s supposed to be catching, because he hasn’t been watching the window at all.

“Villainous!” Shenzi cheers. “I mean, I am magic! Okidoke, guys, we’re gonna craft some wings now, these babies are gonna cut through steel-”

“Or mountains of paperwork, perhaps,” Scar adds lazily, winking again. He tilts his chin slowly upward to give Shenzi a better angle. “If only.”

Zazu exhales. It’s going to be a long afternoon.

An essay on modern decoration.

Traditional tapestries were followed by simpler fabrics, with less conventional ornamentation and inspired more directly by nature. The scientific discoveries of this century, by upsetting our morals and our lives, have led us to also modify our taste. Not only are the means of transport no longer the same, but our clothes and our homes have undergone radical transformations. Our apartments, which are more cheerful, brighter, more comfortable, and enjoying much better lighting, require new decorations. Also, modern art has taken care to replace the Louis XV, the Louis XVI, all this learned and complicated decoration which corresponded to the sumptuous luxury of the last century, to the floral dresses of our grandmothers, to the jabots of our grandfathers, but which formed such a singular contrast with our dark clothes and our woolen suits!

This is the pleasure that will be easily obtained by those of our readers who are willing to lend us a little of their attention and follow the advice that we are going to give them. The task is easy: all it takes is a little good will to see it through.

Decoration of a flat surface.

When we have a surface to decorate, we must first look for the general aspect that the decoration must have, the shape that we want it to affect. This done, it will be necessary to divide this surface by lines of construction: these lines will determine a certain number of parts intended to receive, in a general way, the same reason for decoration.

Construction lines are temporary, but still essential; for, in drawing, as in all things, one must prepare one's work well to obtain good results. These lines are to composition what scaffolding is to the construction of a house. There can be neither regularity nor precision without them, and far from complicating the work, they simplify and make it easy.

Consider plate 1, representing a square that we want to adorn with four motifs, starting from the center and ending at the corners of the square.

If we draw the lines A B and C D, we obtain the surfaces I, II, III, IV, which will allow us to determine exactly the size of the pattern to be sought. Draw the diagonals E H, G F, from the square, and we will have the middle of these motifs: we therefore only have half a motif left to find. The lines we have just built have therefore saved us a lot of trial and error and difficulty.

The decorative pattern.

We will always borrow the decorative motif from natural elements, that is to say from flowers, fruits, insects: we will see that this field is vast enough to satisfy all tastes, meet all needs, and all abilities. Those of our readers who have not made special drawing studies will choose uncomplicated motifs, and it will often be the prettiest flowers, such as the narcissus, the primrose, which will come to offer themselves to them and console them for their lack of knowledge: in the composition of an ornament the simplest flowers indeed most of the time give the happiest results. Those of our readers who are already familiar with the study of drawing will be able to involve several kinds of flowers in the same composition: but, for some as for others, all that is needed is a little taste, attention and care to achieve equally charming decoration patterns.

We are going to begin the study of natural elements with that of the plant, which can be reproduced as we see it, that is to say natural, or which can be interpreted.

When drawing the natural plant as was done in Plate IV, choose a model that is as perfect as possible, for example do not take a damaged flower or one that is missing petals. It should also be remembered that single flowers are the most decorative: this is how the rose and the double dahlia are difficult to use in decorative designs, while the rose hip and the single dahlia lend themselves to the most graceful combinations. But, whatever the model we want to draw, we must carefully observe its character and try to reproduce it exactly. In decoration, as in all other parts of art, it is never permissible to alter the truth, and nature is always the best guide.

However, the natural plant alone cannot provide enough varied and interesting patterns, and the decoration would quickly become monotonous. This is why it is preferable to interpret it and to draw from it compositions, to which one can give a personal and original character, and where the imagination can give free rein. Besides, this does not exclude the natural plant, which can find its place in a composition alongside the same interpreted plant.

Interpretation of the plant.

To interpret a plant, you must first know how to decompose it. In order to make our explanations clearer, we will take as an example the primrose flower, which is easy to obtain.

Plate 5 shows us the successive phases of this work:

Let's start by tearing off a petal and drawing it: this is what was done in Figure 1.

The set of petals gives us the corolla. Observation reveals to us that it can fit into a circumference and that it is made up of five petals of equal size. We therefore describe a circumference (fig. 2) which we divide into five parts. We will thus obtain the points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Join these points in the center. We only have to inscribe in each of these divisions a petal as we have drawn it in figure 1, taking into account however that, in the flower, each petal encroaches slightly on its neighbor. We thus obtain figure 2 which gives us the flower from the front.

Now that we know how to decompose the plant, it will be easy for us to use it for ornamentation by interpreting it. To do this, let's take the square shown in plate 1. Let's draw the construction lines: they will divide the square into four parts. In one of these parts, let's combine a pattern with the elements we just drew. It is here that the imagination of our readers will be able to give free rein, and that they will show their taste. A thousand combinations are available to them: I am convinced that they will be able to choose very graceful ones. It is necessary that the character be respected, but, either to make the composition more elegant, or to fill a void, or to allow a more interesting play of colors, it is allowed to amplify or diminish the importance of such or such part of the plant. Thus in plate VI, the corollas of the flowers in profile have been placed further outside the chalice than they actually are, in order to give more decorative elegance to the flower and less void in the composition, that the buds where the flower begins to appear, have more importance than in nature, while the completely closed buds, less interesting from the point of view of color, have retained their real size. The leaves hiding the attachment points have been enlarged and thus allowed us to reduce what was excessive for the eye the length of the stems and to finish the pattern near the center.

Choosing colors.

The composition is done; we have our pattern drawn. It is now a question of choosing the colors so as to form a pleasant ornamentation.

In decoration, color obeys special laws, which at first sight seem conventional, but which have been indicated by experience and scientifically verified. The main rule is to find the most appropriate tone either for the object to be decorated or for what surrounds it. This is how we will refrain from using violet for the decoration of a cushion intended to be placed on a red armchair. The two colors, thus associated, would produce a most shocking effect. It would be the same with violet and blue, while on the contrary violet and yellow, red and green, blue and orange agree perfectly together.
