Luxaren Allure Review
Karuna, Chisa, Merel, Lynette, and Aurelie stand as a totally charming JRPG cast as you enter this very character focused JRPG. Luxaren Allure is in many ways a very classic JRPG story, gather the magical items, stop the evil guy who is summoning all the evil monsters but stands out in the way it focuses on lesbian love and characters in a really fantastic way.
The game features two romances the tragic romance of Karuna/Aurelie and the sweet love at first sight romance of Merel/Chisa. Aurelie gets possessed by an evil force known as Darkloft becoming her and making the world worse, tragically on the day Karuna hesitated to tell her that she loves her, gasp, the romantic pain. Then Karuna is chosen as the hero and she must defeat darkloft and save the world. Is Aurelie still in there, are the feelings requited even if she is, will Karuna have to kill the white girl she is so down bad for? It's really comelling and dramatic and you for sure want to see how it will play out. On the other hand you have an equally fun and compelling romance with Merel and Chisa, Merel falls for Chisa right away and the shy and sweet Chisa isn't used to being loved or praised. You see their relationship develop over time and get more into Merel's feelings as a Naga about humans and stuff. They are real adorable and they keep a fluffy and nice sapphic element to all the harder tragic romance going on.
The game narratively outside of it's characters is fairly standard, kingdoms exist, silly rulers who are mostly there to be a bit of a goof, darkloft's ambition is black and white evil for evils sake. Your not gonna find anything particularly politically captivating or anything here. There is a little bit of overcoming bias and restorative justice going on as well as a bit of working on discrimination but their all fairly standard fare. Naga's don't want human outsiders there but maybe they learn to accept humans a little by the end. These evil people maybe aren't all bad and deserve to be a little happy too.
Still, the characters are really amazing and anything but standard. Karuna is a woman who is extremally torn and hurt, she wants to be nice and she wants to protect lives but she also is still so deeply in love with Aurelie she is willing to risk everything for her. Then she has this sense of self hate because she is willing to risk everything for her when people are dying. Chisa starts as the meek shy sweet heart and she doesn't stop being sweet or meek but we see a depth to her, why she is meek, what she wants, and her finding what she standards for and what she wants to do with herself even if it's hard for her to do in public. Merel is a perfect take on the over affectionate flirty lesbian. She is a social outcast for her affection for humans, a tragic past crush on a human woman, she is flirty but cares about consent, she loves love and teasing people, utterly charming. Lynette is my least favorite character, she's gonna be a main character for the devs next game and it kinda shows in her character arc being a bit more shallow, there is progress but it's not deep. She has a massive inferiority complex and it is interesting but not enthralling. She wants to murder evil and aggressive women enjoyers will enjoy her shouting at everyone and rejecting sweet little things.
The game features some really neat little accessibility features from having a really nice and fun really easy mode for someone like me who doesn't want to smash her head against the wall to an utterly amazing feature that should be in way more games of this kind which is a toggle to have arrows spawn to show you where to go towards progress.
The gameplay itself while "standard JRPG" is very fun, there is a nice diverse set of moves, the party members work well together, the impulse system is really fun and they serve as nice big special moves to use. It's not like massively throwing out new things but instead just doing something really refined and nice with existing JRPG formulas. It was a perfect game for me to play while just hanging out, a casual game I could play to just have my brain on something while doing something else but also engaging enough in the narrative where when I got to the plot I wanted to switch gears and focus on what was cooking in the story.
The spites in the game are really neat, their all original assets and while they aren't the most refined their all fun to look at and they all have their own charm as something that is uniquely Luxarene Allure. The actual characters sprites in your party are also banger sprites, I really love them and I am glad their around. Unity, the designer was not afraid to make weird little guys to fight and the really special design sensibility is fun to watch the whole way through, your not gonna get a lot of standard enemies portrayed in the most standard way. The art for CGs is also very cute and well drawn, I really like um.
The game isn't very long, I 100%ed the game beating all the optional bosses and everything and it took me about 15ish hours which I think is a perfect run time for this story. It was probably shorter since I did leave the game on several times while I did other things but I did also play on the easiest mode possible so milage will vary. I think the game would be worth a decent price tag but it's actually free so like, you can just have a full as JRPG about lesbians for 0 dollars although your always free to give the creator money on Ko-fi and maybe it's pay what you want on Itch.io so if you enjoy it I do encourage you to support the creator so she can make us another amazing game.
If you enjoy these reviews you can read more, I write lots of them and if you really enjoy them I can always use support over on Patreon and Ko-fi.

give us the most blatantly unfair 3 characters quiz you can think of
Alright motherfuckers y’all asked for this, BEHOLD! Aurelie (Luxaren Allure) and Virgo (Virgo vs The Zodiac):
Compared to one half of the deadliest pirate duo, Anne Bonny!
(Her sprite was the best art I could find of her alone…)
Ok then, guess it! Whoever gets this as precisely as I’m thinking gets a whopping five points on the scoreboard.

“Wow I remember this game. It’s been so long since I last played it but I remember loving their work! This one’s the Fantasy RPG where the Evil Overlord is your magically corrupted sweetheart, right?”
Game opens with an almost jazzy techno tune. “I forgot about this!”
Game shows a grotesque castle and that one hallway that is either lined with rust or meat. “... I wish I forgot about that.”
#luxaren allure#rpg#freeware#a little rough#but a very good game#mc and main villain are both disasters your honor#also a lot of npcs are jerks but ignore them#unity (dev)#M-3-1#sapphire dream games#rpg maker

At the risk of revealing some serious cringe about myself, here are the final potential outcomes for the RPGMaker Roulette:
Corruption of Laetitia (Using the power of a demon lord you just banished to survive a betrayal… this, too, is yuri…)
Luxaren Allure (Having to fight your long lost friend because she returned as the second coming of an evil overlord… this, too, is yuri)
Nocturne (Remember, sometimes that nice man who saved you is a vampire who wishes to kill your entire village!)
Umbral Soul (Ow, The Edge Of Being An RPGMaker Game Villain)
Wadanohara (Dear Sea God why do they do this to her?)
BoxxyQuest (Yes, THAT Boxxy from ages ago)
Exit Fate (man blacking out sucks, it often resembles accidental desertion and betrayal)
Forum Fantasy (By the Chaos Theatre Forum, For the Chaos Theatre Forum)
Wine and Roses (ok so a Skeleton and Three Ladies Walk Into A Castle…)
Forever Home (War sucks, and life’s too short to be an ass forever)
Ara Fell (It’s like playing a decent webcomic about vampires and elves!)
Rise of the Third Power (Imperial Powers are never justified)
Stray Cat Crossing (Surprisingly few cats actually…)
OFF (Hey I’m a tumblr user what did you expect?)
i am still alive (allegedly)
A Very Long Rope To The Top Of The Sky (The rope is almost as long as the title!)
Illusions of Loyalty (“Ideals? All this over some flimsy ideals?” <- actually one of the better questions in the game)

I just felt compelled to draw this, there is not much thought behind it other than "The girlies are talking".
I started replaying Weird and Unfortunate Things Are Happening. It's an excelent RPG Maker game with interesting usage of game mechanics and a very engaging story and world exploration.
I love the games that UnityDev makes, she is fascinating. Every game of hers has managed to somehow be extremely engaging and made me spend so much time. The end game dungeons of Wautah and Luxaren Allure made me spend like 50 hours in each game

Yuri Recommendations on Itch
A reader just asked for recommendations for #yuri games on Itch.io, and since my list got kind of big, I decided to respond in a post for any of my readers who’re interested.
I'm currently playing Who is the Red Queen? an Alice in Wonderland VN that's creepy and morbid but also quite charming. If visual novels are your thing, I really enjoyed Blossoms Bloom Brightest is a sweet sci-fi adventure with a couple romance options. Heart of the Woods is a beautiful story of three girls and a ghost---one of whom is transgender and voiced by a trans voice actress. Highway Blossoms is a fun road-trip and treasure hunt that I’ve reviewed before. England Exchange is playable as male or female with four male and four female romance options, six of which are bi. Lost Girl is cute and pretty, but also kind of needed an editor. Stranded Hearts is also a survival sim that I enjoyed but never really got the hang of the mechanics of.
If RPGs are more your thing, Corruption of Laetitia is my favorite, about a fallen paladin betrayed by her allies. Dreams of an Exile is more of a puzzle game and one that I’m not good at, but that I’ve enjoyed all the same. Serment; Contract with a Devil is a cute and quirky demo, though the full version is Steam-only. Knight Bewitched is a terrific story of a knight who falls for the witch she’s sent to kill (and which I literally found out two minutes ago has a sequel!). And lastly but not leastly, Luxaren Allure features a knight on a quest to rescue her girlfriend who’s been possessed by a demonic suit of armor.
Anyway, these are just some of the ones I can think of off the top of my head. If anyone else has recommendations, feel free to chime in!

I’ve been brought on as an artist (once again) for one of the lovely Unity’s games, Izrand Allure, a sequel for her older RPG game Luxaren Allure. A wlw RPG.
It’s always a joy to work alongside Unity. Her creativity is wonderful and her sense of design is stunning.
Check the game out here:
On RPGmaker.net
or Itch.io
Keep an eye on this one as it develops.

It’s hard to express why I recoil so much from any form of D/S in fiction, no matter how mild. An attempt:
1): I really, really hate being touched. A lot of people assume that everyone who says they don’t want to be touched will start wanting it after being touched. D/S fiction often involves the dom repeatedly pushing the sub into situations they didn’t want, but turn out to enjoy, and there’s never any backlash from being pushed too far.
2): I’m instinctively helpful. If someone has a problem, and I have time to spare, I will immediately start helping them out, even if it’s not my responsibility. The catch is that I keep forgetting that other people don’t do this, so I’m always caught off guard when I have a problem and the people I helped don’t do anything to help me. In D/S fiction, I wind up raging at the doms who expect to be served and never serve.
3): There’s a degree of overlap between D/S and bimbo, largely in the direction of bimbo subs. The thing I most value about myself is my ability to make my own decisions, and I tend to extrapolate that outwards, assuming that most people have rational goals and will make the right choices if given the support and resources to do so. I get angry at the idea of the subby bimbo who’s too stupid to run their own life and needs a dom to tell them what to do.
4): I’m interested in morphological freedom, and for whatever reason, there is a LOT of overlap between morphological freedom and D/S, making the latter hard to avoid.
If this seems like it doesn’t cover that much fiction, you’re underestimating what I react to. Even stuff like Luxaren Allure or Cute Demon Crashers, where the D/S elements are super mild, is enough for me to start panicking and feeling all skin-crawly. Not to mention the prevalence of untagged A/B/O, and the tendency of both het and M/M romance to have one character be the “guy” who doms the “girl.” (One of the reasons I read so much F/F is that it tends not to have a dom.)
Now that I think about it, you could argue that the actual reason I’m so massively anti-monarchist is that I refuse to sub for a king . . .

Deliberately provocative hot take: Gal Gun is a heterosexual game, and it illustrates by comparison what a Robert Yang game is.
Take I actually endorse: Tales of Hearts is a heterosexual game in which the het romance is integral to the story, and it illustrates by comparison what those lesbian RPG Maker games like Knight Bewitched or Luxaren Allure are. Treating story and mechanics as somehow separate is like trying to analyze a modern movie with the sound off.
(Side note: is anyone making gay male games like Luxaren Allure? Every gay male game I know of is NSFW, which seems weird to me.)
I hate how fucking twee and repetitive the Queer™️ indie gaming scene is… like how many visual novels and dating sims do you bitches need?

“Karuna and Aurelie used to be close, both training together to become great swordswomen, though Karuna always hoped they could become something more. All that changed the day Aurelie went missing... and though Karuna never gave up hope looking for her, she never expected them to cross paths again two years later, or the person Aurelie could possibly have become. In free indie RPG Luxaren Allure by developer Unity, formerly kind and quiet Aurelie is now Overlord Darkloft after donning a suit of cursed armor found in a castle where demonic statuary and glistening red furniture are used to decorate, as one does. Karuna's been tapped by the king to play the role of the "chosen one" and gather the artifacts needed to destroy the Overlord... no matter how she may still feel about her former friend.“
