Cancer awareness.
So last time someone asked me whether we celebrate Diwali or not I replied that we won't be this year since my uncle (my mother's brother) is on a ventilator. This was 11th November. On 13th November, my uncle passed away due to cancer.
Nobody knew he had cancer before. So let me take you on a journey of about four and a half months of cancer.
–July 2023.
So my uncle had a “wound” around his wisdom tooth. He was in pain and consulted a dentist 1. This dentist has done all the dental stuff in our family/relatives. A really good one. He said that it was an ulcer and it would be fine and gave some painkillers and other medicine to help it heal.
However, that did not work out and the pain only got worse. My uncle changed the doctor and went to the dentist 2. Now, this dentist is a well-known doctor and works in a very expensive hospital. And he has a clinic of his own. He said that they needed to extract the wisdom teeth. And after that, it will heal. So they did that.
The pain did not stop but it only got worse for even worse.
–August 2023.
When he did not get any relief, my uncle went to another hospital (which is one of the top hospitals in India). They did the scanning and we found out that he had stage 1 cancer in his mouth.
The doctors recommended he should get it operated and removed. So they did that. It was a shock for doctors that when they were operating on him, they found that it was not only in his mouth but in his throat as well. It looked like it started in the throat and its roots went towards his mouth.
They declared that it was not the first stage but the fifth stage of cancer.
Then his chemotherapy and radiation began. He was getting weaker quite faster since his upper jaw was operated on and he was on a liquid diet.
The treatment went on. He was fine at the beginning. Doing minor chores or taking himself to appointments. That did not last long.
–October 2023.
His health got worse and he was completely in bed. His breath would shorten even if went to the toilet which was just one step from his side. It would take minutes on minutes to get his breath at a normal rate.
It was around 14th October. We were there. My aunt helped my uncle bathe but things were not good. His breath was way too short and you could see his stomach getting sucked in when he was trying to breathe.
The next day was the day he was hospitalized.
The doctors said that his lungs were filled with water because of some infection which, to date, is not known.
They started taking out the water. They would fill many bottles every day. It was abnormal, to say the least, that there was that much water in his lungs.
–November 2023.
During that time, they took his bone marrow and tested it. Just to find out the cancer has spread in his bones as well. The doctors did another test whose results took almost a week to come back. The doctors said that if this test was positive, they can do another treatment which was basically the last thing they could do to save his life.
The test came out to be positive. And they prepared the injection. They took him to the ICU in order to keep him under observation for 24 hours according to the protocol of that injection.
This injection was supposed to extend his life by 2 years (maximum). This was an expensive injection costing ₹2,00,000 and this was to be given every three weeks.
Things didn't turn out well.
His health deteriorated. He already had a kidney problem for a long. His kidney doctors had asked him to buy a plot just in case they needed to perform a kidney transplant.
His creatinine increased dangerously and doctors suggested dylasis. They did that too. However, nothing worked and finally after two days, on 13th November, he took his last breath.
.
I made this post to share something that happened to us recently. Never have any of us thought this would happen to our close relatives/family. Cancer is a tricky thing.
The main fault was of Dentist 2 that he pulled his tooth out. Cancer attacks faster when it is touched. He should have taken cautionary steps while treating.
What's done is done. He can't come back and we hope he finds peace.
I just want to share this so you are aware of it. Always get proper tests done. Never take things lightly. Even if you see minor symptoms of anything, get it checked. I don't know what to say right now. But at least let's stay healthy and cautious.
Cancer is a sneaky nightmare. It took someone so close to us within a few months. It was a horrible and haunting thing.
I hope nothing like this happens to any of you. I love you guys so please let's stay healthy. Look after your friends, family, and yourself. Life is too short for regrets❤️.

Radiotherapy Cost in Chennai
Cancer remains one of the most significant health challenges worldwide, but modern medical advancements have greatly improved treatment outcomes. Among these advancements, radiation therapy stands out as a cornerstone in cancer care, playing a crucial role in combating various types of cancer. Radiotherapy Cost in Chennai For millions of patients, radiation therapy offers a powerful means to target and destroy cancer cells. This guide will delve into what radiation therapy is, its types, benefits, risks, and its cost in Chennai—a city renowned for its cutting-edge cancer care facilities.
Understanding Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy, or radiotherapy, uses high-energy particles or waves, such as X-rays, gamma rays, electron beams, or protons, to damage or destroy cancer cells. It works by targeting the DNA within cancer cells, preventing them from multiplying and leading to their eventual death. Unlike systemic treatments like chemotherapy, radiation therapy is localized, focusing on specific areas of the body affected by cancer.
How Radiation Therapy Targets Cancer Cells
Cancer cells grow and divide rapidly. Radiation therapy disrupts this process by damaging the DNA inside these cells. Once their DNA is compromised, cancer cells lose their ability to reproduce and eventually die. While healthy cells in the treatment area can also be affected, they have a better capacity to repair themselves, which minimizes long-term damage.
When is Radiation Therapy Recommended?
Radiation therapy can be employed in different stages of cancer treatment, depending on the type of cancer, its stage, and the patient’s overall health. It may be used in the following scenarios:
Curative Treatment: Radiation aims to eliminate tumors and destroy cancer cells, offering a potential cure for early-stage cancers.
Adjuvant Therapy: Administered after surgery or chemotherapy, this therapy helps eliminate any remaining cancer cells, reducing the risk of recurrence.
Neoadjuvant Therapy: Given before surgery, this approach helps shrink tumors, making them easier to remove surgically.
Palliative Treatment: For advanced cancers, radiation helps relieve symptoms like pain, bleeding, or difficulty swallowing, improving the patient’s quality of life.
Types of Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy comes in several forms, each tailored to specific cancer types and locations:
1. External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT)
The most common form of radiotherapy, EBRT uses a machine to deliver high-energy beams from outside the body. Treatments are typically spread over several weeks, with daily sessions that last a few minutes each. This method is widely used for cancers of the breast, lung, and prostate.
2. Internal Radiation Therapy (Brachytherapy)
In brachytherapy, radioactive materials are placed directly inside or near the tumor. This method is particularly effective for cancers such as prostate, cervical, and breast cancer. It allows for high doses of radiation to be delivered to the tumor while sparing surrounding healthy tissues.
3. Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT)
SBRT delivers highly focused radiation beams to a small, localized area. It involves fewer treatment sessions with higher doses, making it an efficient option for small, well-defined tumors, particularly in the lungs or liver.
4. Proton Therapy
Proton therapy is a cutting-edge technique that uses protons instead of X-rays. It allows for more precise targeting of tumors, minimizing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. While effective for certain cancers, proton therapy is less commonly available and tends to be more expensive than traditional radiation methods.
Benefits of Radiation Therapy in Chennai
Chennai is home to some of India’s top cancer treatment centers, offering advanced radiation therapy options with world-class technology. Patients in Chennai benefit from comprehensive care, experienced oncologists, and state-of-the-art facilities.
Key Advantages
Effective for Various Cancers: Radiation therapy is effective for treating cancers such as breast, prostate, cervical, and head and neck cancers.
Minimally Invasive: Unlike surgical options, radiation therapy does not require incisions, making it a less invasive treatment choice.
Precise Targeting: Advanced techniques like SBRT and proton therapy ensure that radiation is delivered directly to the tumor, reducing damage to surrounding healthy tissues.
Palliative Benefits: For advanced cancer cases, radiation therapy helps manage symptoms, improving the patient’s comfort and quality of life.
Risks and Side Effects of Radiation Therapy
While radiation therapy is highly effective, it is not without risks. Since it affects both cancerous and healthy cells, side effects may occur. The severity and type of side effects depend on factors such as the area treated, the radiation dose, and the patient’s overall health.
Common Side Effects
Fatigue: Many patients report tiredness during and after the treatment course.
Skin Changes: Redness, peeling, or irritation may occur in the treated area.
Nausea and Vomiting: These symptoms are more common when the abdomen or stomach is targeted.
Hair Loss: This occurs only in the treated area, such as the scalp in cases of brain cancer.
Long-Term Risks
In rare cases, radiation therapy may cause long-term issues, including scarring of tissues, damage to nearby organs, or, in very rare instances, secondary cancers.
Radiotherapy Cost in Chennai
Chennai is recognized for providing high-quality cancer treatment at relatively affordable rates compared to Western countries. The cost of radiation therapy in Chennai varies based on several factors:
Cost Factors
Type of Radiation Therapy: Advanced techniques like proton therapy or SBRT are more expensive than conventional EBRT.
Number of Sessions: The total cost increases with the number of treatment sessions required.
Hospital and Technology: The choice of hospital, expertise of the oncologist, and the technology used can influence the price.
Insurance Coverage: Many insurance policies in India cover radiation therapy, reducing the out-of-pocket expenses for patients.
Average Costs
In Chennai, the cost of radiation therapy typically ranges from INR 1,50,000 to INR 4,00,000, depending on the type and duration of treatment. Patients should consult with their healthcare provider and insurance company to understand the specific costs and coverage options.
Top Radiation Therapy Specialists in Chennai
Chennai boasts a host of skilled oncologists and cancer specialists. Notable names include:
Dr. V. Balasundaram
Dr. V M Duraimavalavan
Dr. Saravanan Periasamy
These specialists provide personalized care and are known for their expertise in using the latest radiation therapy techniques to achieve the best outcomes for their patients.
When to Consider Radiation Therapy?
Radiation therapy may not be suitable for all cancer patients, but it is a critical option for many. Patients should consider this treatment under the following circumstances:
Surgery is not viable, and the cancer is localized.
Tumors need to be reduced in size before surgical intervention.
Post-surgery or chemotherapy, to eliminate residual cancer cells.
Advanced cancer cases where palliative care is needed to manage symptoms.
Conclusion
Radiation therapy plays an indispensable role in cancer treatment, offering hope and improved outcomes for millions of patients. With advancements like SBRT and proton therapy, radiation therapy has become more precise and effective. Chennai, as a hub for top-tier cancer care, provides access to these advanced therapies at competitive costs, coupled with expert medical guidance.
If you or a loved one is considering radiation therapy, it is essential to understand the treatment process, potential risks, and costs. Consulting with experienced oncologists in Chennai ensures you receive comprehensive and tailored care, making radiation therapy a vital part of your cancer treatment journey. Liver Transplant in India
The Liver is one of the five Vital Organs in the human body. The Liver performs many important functions for the proper functioning of the Human Body. Any changes or abnormalities in liver tissues can affect the quality of life and may need medical treatments. Certain Medical Conditions like Cirrhosis of the Liver, primary Liver cancer, or an ill-functioning Liver may require a Liver Transplant to save the life of the patient.
What is a Liver Transplant Surgery?
A liver Transplant is a life-saving Surgery performed by a specially trained gastroenterology surgeon to replace the damaged or faulty liver in a patient with a healthy liver either from a deceased donor liver or the portion of the Liver obtained from a living liver donor. Liver Transplant Surgery is a complicated surgery and requires great expertise from gastroenterology surgeons and a proper hospital setup.
Why a Liver transplant is needed?
A liver transplant is needed when the liver tissues are damaged and the Liver is unable to perform its functions. An end-stage liver disease patient requires a Liver Transplant for survival. A liver Transplant is also indicated for the treatment of primary Liver Cancer when the cancer is localized and the tumor size is smaller. Following medical conditions may make a Gastroenterologist or Hepatologist recommend a Liver Transplant for a patient:
Liver Cirrhosis
Alcohol-induced liver damage due to chronic alcoholism
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Hemochromatosis
Wilson's disease
Primary biliary Cholangitis (PBC)
Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC)
Biliary atresia (generally for pediatric liver patients)
Autoimmune hepatitis
Acute Liver failure
Primary Liver cancer
Types of Liver Transplants
Liver Transplants are done either with a deceased liver donor or a healthy liver donor.
Deceased Donor Liver Transplant
Orthotopic liver transplant is replacing the damaged liver in an end-stage liver disease patient with a healthy liver procured from a deceased donor.
Split liver transplants are also orthotopic liver transplants where the deceased donor's liver is split into two and transplanted into two end-stage liver disease patients. In Split liver transplant surgery, the left lateral cadaveric liver is transplanted into a child, and the right extended liver is transplanted into an adult patient.
Living Donor Liver Transplants
Living donor liver transplants are done by taking a portion of the liver from an HLA matching Liver Donor. The Donor reverts to the full functionality of the Liver within 6 weeks of liver donation and lives a perfectly normal life.

Atezolizumab Injection : A Guide to Tecentriq and Its Uses in India
In recent years, immunotherapy has emerged as a groundbreaking approach in cancer treatment, offering renewed hope for patients facing difficult-to-treat cancers. One such immunotherapy drug is Atezolizumab, marketed under the brand name Tecentriq. This drug has shown promising results in treating a variety of cancers, including lung cancer, bladder cancer, and specific forms of breast cancer. However, like many innovative treatments, the cost can be a concern, particularly in India. In this post, we will explore the atezolizumab injection price, its uses, and what patients can expect when considering Tecentriq as part of their cancer treatment plan.
Atezolizumab – Uses & Introduction
Atezolizumab is a cancer immunotherapy drug classified as a PD-L1 inhibitor. It enhances the immune system’s ability to recognize and destroy cancer cells. In normal conditions, cancer cells evade the immune system by producing a protein called PD-L1, which essentially “turns off” the body’s immune response against them. Atezolizumab blocks this PD-L1 protein, allowing the immune system to detect and attack cancer cells more effectively.
Atezolizumab injection is used to treat various cancers, including:
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC)
Urothelial carcinoma (bladder cancer)
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC)
Hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer)
It is often prescribed for advanced-stage cancers or when the cancer has metastasized (spread to other parts of the body). Atezolizumab is typically administered alongside chemotherapy or other cancer treatments, depending on the type and stage of the cancer.
How Does Atezolizumab Work? The Mechanism of Action
Understanding how Atezolizumab works can provide patients with a clearer perspective on its role in cancer treatment. Under normal circumstances, the immune system attacks anything recognized as harmful, including cancer cells. However, tumors can avoid immune detection by producing PD-L1, which effectively shuts down the immune response.
Atezolizumab interrupts this process by binding to PD-L1 and preventing it from interacting with the PD-1 receptor on immune cells. This restores the immune system’s ability to recognize and fight cancer cells, allowing for a more targeted and effective treatment. As a result, many patients experience improved outcomes, particularly in advanced cancers.
Tecentriq 1200mg Injection Price in India
Like most immunotherapy drugs, the cost of Atezolizumab is significant, and it’s important to consider the Tecentriq 1200mg injection price when planning treatment. In India, the price typically ranges from ₹2.5 lakh to ₹3.5 lakh per dose, depending on the healthcare provider, location, and any applicable discounts or assistance programs.
The high cost reflects the advanced nature of the drug’s formulation and the research behind its development. For many patients, Atezolizumab requires multiple doses over a period of months, depending on the cancer type and stage, which can substantially increase the total treatment cost.
Atezolizumab Injection Price: What Influences the Cost?
Several factors contribute to the atezolizumab injection price in India:
Manufacturer: Tecentriq is produced by Roche, a global pharmaceutical leader, and the cost reflects the investment in research, clinical trials, and obtaining regulatory approvals.
Healthcare Facility: The cost can vary depending on whether treatment is administered in private hospitals, public healthcare facilities, or specialized cancer clinics.
Insurance Coverage: Patients with comprehensive insurance may have some of the costs covered, though policies can differ widely, so it’s important to confirm coverage specifics.
Number of Doses: Treatment duration and the number of doses required depend on the type of cancer and its progression, directly impacting overall costs.
Although the atezolizumab injection price can be high, it offers life-extending benefits for many cancer patients, making the investment in treatment worthwhile for eligible individuals.
Financial Assistance and Support Options
Given the high Tecentriq 1200mg injection price, financial assistance programs are available to help patients manage treatment costs. These include:
Insurance: Health insurance providers may offer partial or full coverage for immunotherapy treatments like Atezolizumab. Check with your insurance provider to confirm coverage.
Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs: Roche offers patient support programs that can reduce the out-of-pocket costs for Tecentriq. For those in need of financial aid, Medlama can assist in connecting patients with such programs to obtain the best possible price for Atezolizumab.
Government Health Schemes: Programs like Ayushman Bharat offer affordable cancer treatment for eligible patients in India, providing further financial support.
Non-Profit Organizations: Organizations like the Indian Cancer Society and CanSupport provide financial assistance to cancer patients who cannot afford treatment costs.
Exploring these options can significantly ease the financial burden of cancer treatment.
What to Expect During Atezolizumab Treatment
Atezolizumab is administered as an IV infusion, typically every two to four weeks, depending on the patient’s specific treatment plan. Each session lasts about 30 to 60 minutes.
Common side effects include fatigue, nausea, and reduced appetite. Some patients may also experience immune-related side effects, such as inflammation in organs like the lungs, liver, or intestines. Close monitoring by a healthcare team is essential to manage these side effects and ensure treatment efficacy.
Conclusion: Balancing Cost and Treatment Effectiveness
Atezolizumab, sold under the brand name Tecentriq, represents a breakthrough in cancer treatment, offering new hope for patients with advanced or difficult-to-treat cancers. However, the atezolizumab injection price in India, ranging between ₹2.5 lakh and ₹3.5 lakh per dose, can be a significant financial concern.
For those exploring this treatment, it’s essential to explore available financial assistance programs. Consult with your healthcare provider or pharmacy counselor at Medlama to find the best possible offers and support options, ensuring you receive the treatment without an overwhelming financial burden.
