The Night of the 12th

Perhaps I’ve watched too many procedurals on TV, but as the detectives in Dominik Moll’s THE NIGHT OF THE 12TH (2022, in theaters — yes, I went out to a movie theater) slaved to find out who had killed suburban girl Clara (Lula Cotton-Frapier), I was mentally screaming the obvious solution at them. Did they listen? Of course not. An opening title informs the audience the case was never solved, so the point is to ask ourselves how it failed to be solved. Only that’s not really the focus. After a very good scene in which the woman’s mother (Charline Paul) learns of her daughter’s death, the investigation isn’t the most interesting part of the film. The police find various men Clara had slept with, which gets kind of repetitious. What’s more interesting is the little details of the detectives lives that creep in: the older detective whose wife has become pregnant by another man, the young detective who’s kidded when he announces he’s marrying and isn’t there when they reopen the case three years later, the female detective who takes his place because she didn’t want a job that required a uniform. Bouillon is very good as the chief who works out his frustrations by cycling on a closed track. As the case goes nowhere, his cycling gets progressively faster. One of his colleagues questions why he doesn’t bike on the open road, and at the end he is. All of this leaves the impression that poor Clara’s not receiving justice is less important than the male detective’s freeing his spirit. Late in the film, the chief detective (Bastien Bouillon) tells a female judge (Anouk Grinberg) reopening the case after three years that the only thing he’s learned from it is that there’s something wrong with the way men and women relate. There are hints at that early on when one detective tries to judge Clara’s sex life, but by the end it seems the film itself is a symptom of the problems men have in relating to women.

You'd think boys would be glad to see girls attend their high school? Not at all. When Voltaire High becomes coed in 1963 France and for the first time a handful of girls take classes alongside boys, a whole world is knocked off balance.

An original, and wonderful find on Amazon. The show is set in the 60s and explores the sexual revolution. It's coming of age story with very interesting characters. I enjoyed it a lot. If you want something original, witty, engaging and enjoyable then give this one a go. I hope Amazon will renew it for another season @amazonstudios Edit: there won't be a season 2 on Amazon but I read that the producers may try and bring it on another channel. It is still worth watching.
