All the bozos complaining about our supposed overabundance of Positive Lesbian Representation in Media — reporting in, presumably, from the same parallel dimension with the overabundance of TV and movie butches — and wishing Hollywood would just go back to good old-fashioned toxic lesbian movies, your dream film has arrived! Based on a novel by Ottessa Moshfegh and set in the mid-1960s, this resolutely unpleasant little movie stars Thomasin McKenzie as the title character, a mousy young woman (who is allegedly very plain despite being played by Thomasin McKenzie) working at a men's prison in a judgmental little New England town and taking care of her awful alcoholic father. When Rebecca, the prison's glamorous new psychiatrist (Anne Hathaway with an incongruous bleach job), seemingly takes a fancy to her, Eileen begins having stirrings, which for a time suggests that this is going to be one of those exercises in Period Piece Lesbian Misery (à la CAROL or the film version of TELL IT TO THE BEES). However, things then take a wholly unexpected and very dark turn, and you're reminded that the publicity made noises about this being a Hitchcockian thriller.

Even before the Sudden Turn, EILEEN is a bleak and joyless story, the cinematic equivalent of slipping on a sidewalk and getting dirty early-spring snow up the back of your shirt. If the thought of MILFy Anne Hathaway laying her hand on your knee sets off KILL BILL sirens in your head, you'll see where Eileen is coming from, but watching her being abused and belittled by everyone around her other than Rebecca (punctuated by Eileen's fantasies of killing her father or herself) is pretty much the opposite of fun. Moreover, the sharp left into Hitchcock territory means that Eileen doesn't even get the usual Period Piece Lesbian Misery quota of one to 1.5 soft-focus vanilla sex scenes before the torment sets in. Bleah!

Extremely strong content warnings are needed for CSA, which is not depicted, but is described in unexpected and upsetting detail, along with some brief but quite graphic violence. It's bad enough that I would advise caution even if the stars make you think it might be worth a look.

A story about misery, depression, and the power of persuasion, the outlandish third act threatens to sink the entire film.

I have a love / hate relationship with director William Oldroyd‘s “Eileen,” his screen adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh‘s award-winning novel. The majority of the film works well (although it’s a bit slow), but the last thirty minutes reveal a shocking twist that feels out of place. Since the screenplay was co-written by Moshfegh and her husband Luke Goebel, it stays true to the original story. But…

It was my first day at camp, I had no clue who anyone was besides Mr. D, Chiron and Grover. Everything was sort of a blur, one minute I was with my mom telling me my father was a god then the next she was gone. Killed by some monster. I don’t remember exactly what Grover had called it.

I was snapped out of my daze when a guy snapped his fingers in my face. I looked up to see a guy dark black curls and dark brown eyes.

“Your Y/N , right?” He asked looking down at me.

“Yes I am, uh, sorry I don’t know who you are.” I reply back looking away from him.

“I’m Luke. I’m a camp counselor here, Chiron asked me to show you around camp.” He said a soft smile. “ Follow me I’ll show you around.” He said waving me to follow him.

“This over here are the cabins, you’ll be staying in the Hermes cabin for now, the cabin I’m also in. It’s we’re all new campers come until there godly parent claims them.” Luke explains to me pointing off each godly parents cabin.

“Hey Luke?” I ask, touching his shoulder to get his attention.

“Yes?” He says, turning around to face me.

“Who’s that girl over there?” I ask pointing towards a tall girl with long dark curly hair, who’s already staring back at us with a angry look.

“Oh, her, that’s Clarisse daughter of Ares. God of war. I’d stay away from her, she likes to show off to the new kids.” He says until a kid runs up to him interrupting him.

“Luke! A Hermes kid needs your help, a girls arrow slipped and cut her arm!” A girl no much more then 11-13 says, grabbing his arm to show him where.

“Well I guess will have to cut our tour short, you should be fine just ask another camper if you can’t find me. We’ll see you around Y/N!” Luke says as him and the girl run off to we’re in guessing the archery place was.

I turn away and start walking towards the girls bathroom to escape everyone else, without noticing someone following me in. I walk up to sink looking into the mirror I see someone behind me, I turn around to see a girl. I hadn’t seen this girl before she had blonde hair and green eyes.

“Uhm, hi. Can I help you?” I ask her.

“Yes you can. You see I saw you getting pretty touchy with Luke earlier and I hope you know me and him are dating.” She says when too more girls enter the bathroom to.

“I promise you I don’t like Luke like that, I was just trying to get his attention-“ I say back before one the girls comes up and grabs my arms and the blonde girl comes up and slaps me.

“So you were trying to get his attention. Well he doesn’t like you! He likes me!” She says then slaps me again. “You too go shove her face in a toilet.” She orders them. The too girls start taking me over to a open stall and make me kneel down in-front of a toilet.

“McKenzie what the fuck do you think your doing?!” A new girls voice appears.

“I was just showing her not to flirt with my boyfriend!” The girl whose name I know McKenzie says.

“All of you leave now! Or it won’t be pretty.” The girl threateneds and then suddenly the girls holding my arms drop them and all the girls run off.

I slowly stand up walking out the stall looking at the floor. “Thank you- uh for that.” I say looking up to the girl from earlier- Clarisse. “You’re the girl from earlier, Clarisse?” I say a small gasp on my face.

“I am. I’m guessing Luke told you about me. And you’re welcome for me saving your ass. You could really use a lesson of how to fight back you know.” She says rolling her eyes.

“Well maybe you could teach me sometime.” I say back, looking into her gorgeous brown eyes.

“Well the let’s go.” She says holding her hand out to me.
