Blake: Those of you who know are aware that it takes something truly special to get me excited about anything. I usually come off with this neutral, blank reaction to just about everything. But every time a new issue of "Ninjas of Love" is released, I feel a tightness in my chest.
Blake: It's either that, or the heroic amount of bacon-sausage sandwiches I inhale every morning.

Musings on my introduction to Warhammer 40k
It started with lore videos. Luetin09 had a playlist of lore videos on Warhammer 40,000. I never really paid much attention to the fiction or the tabletop game, but I thought the series would be a good thing to listen to as I fell asleep at night so I added the playlist to my library. I'm not sure when exactly I started to get hooked. It might have been sometime around the 7th or 8th video after the Horus Heresy story was told that I started to become much more invested in paying attention to the fiction. The tragedy of the Horus Heresy still compels me, the fall from grace is a reliable source of drama and emotion when done well, and the dramatic irony of an Emperor who sought to eradicate all religion and faith becoming a God-Emperor worshipped by the remains of his empire is rich.
Since I was most interested in exploring the world of fiction and less interested in the tabletop side of things, I started to look into what books would be the best to read to get introduced to this world outside of lore videos on YouTube. Most online sources and advice from others already into the fiction recommended the Eisenhorn trilogy of books. I happily downloaded and voraciously consumed the first book, Xenos, within a week. It was pretty much the perfect sci-fi space fantasy adventure. You had your cast of characters already known to each other and introduced to the reader through a mid-mission introduction that opens up into the larger conspiracy that consumes the rest of the plot. It moves and moves from beat to beat, seemingly always ending with enough of a teaser or revelation in the last line to make me eager to dig into the next chapter whenever I could. New characters get introduced, there are actual long lasting consequences and losses (most notably the destruction of Eisenhorn's ability to smile) and downtime where characters are given adequate time to believably recover and prepare for the next large setpiece and sustain even more damage before the ultimate resolution.
With Xenos wrapped up and my interest fully piqued into what else Warhammer 40k had to offer, I chose the first of the Horus Heresy novels, Horus Rising. The introduction was comprehensively confusing as it bait and switches your expectation as to future events with a meandering, perspective changing introduction revolving around Horus killing the emperor, emphasis on little e. Once my confusion was cleared up, watching Loken ascend into the inner circle of Horus, and seeing the intimate details of a body of people, the faults and cracks in the Emperor's Great Crusade became everpresent and ultimately believable as the fault of human beings. The Emperor is, as he claims, just a man, and that is why his crusade ultimately fails. As famously claimed by Halo: Reach, "from the beginning, you know the end." Horus will fall, legions of space marines will perish, and after a few more thousands of years we will reach the timeline of Eisenhorn, but for now, I get to fret and worry over the ultimate fates of the periphery characters of history such as Lorken and the various remembrancers accompanying Horus' forces across the cosmo. My one complaint is that due to the ultimate fate of the universe being known, a few too many knowing references are written in, things such as Astartes killing Astartes, Horus himself succumbing to Chaos, the Emperor dying and being worshipped throughout the empire, etc. It cheapens the surrounding characters as fourth wall breaks weaken the overall drama of the current time by referencing known facts the characters can't comprehend. These don't reinforce the tragedy of known events yet to happen, they just call attention to themselves as winks from the author to the reader and not believable dialogue between characters.
Once Horus Rising was completed, I returned to Eisenhorn with the second novel, Malleus. Though I didn't find it as good as Xenos, it was still a great sci-fi adventure, and the epilogue is a huge tease for the finale in Hereticus. Malleus, as a result of revisting and reintroducing various elements present in Xenos, something that, to me, happened only a week or two ago but for Eisenhorn happened a century ago, feels too fresh to have as much significance to me as I feel was intended. This pushes me more towards the various side-novels and short stories involving Eisenhorn, as they, presumably, do not have as many direct ties to each other and the mainline trilogy as to make the universe feel smaller than it is.
Now I'm beginning False Gods, the second book of the Horus Heresy. The series is quite extensive, as I've already looked into the order in which they were published, as well as some of the earliest Warhammer 40k novels as I'm always interested in seeing the very beginning of something that is now so large. It has also made me more interested in the games that seek to capture the experience of living within this world, at this time mostly with the Boltgun game, as I can never get enough of the boomer-shooters explosion (hopefully something will one day surpass DUSK.) I have been really enjoying this dip into Warhammer fiction though, and intend to see it through as long as my interest holds. I've already torn through three novels in less than a month, who knows how much more I can do.

Warhammer (40K and 30K) Youtuber Masterlist ("Good" At teaching/entertaining)
Hi there! This is just a masterlist cataloguing, in my opinion, the warhammer youtuber space and who can actually be reasonably trusted to give you lore/isn't terrible. This list is not exhaustive and very opiniated because I am, myself, a lore youtuber with a focus on citations and good info you can find yourself. My criteria may seem silly and too stringent on occassion but I run 5 servers, and hold the position of ""lore master"" in them, it is NOT a good role to have and in no way does it give me any more say on anything on the setting. My critiera is thus 1. Broad statements without backup < Bad 2. Fandom mentioned anywhere < Terrible, Lexicanum may be seen as "purist" but its better with how it handles sourcing. 3. Uncritical and wholesale reciting of fandom pages < Bad 4. Book mentions/Paragraph reading < Good generally, but a page number SHOULD accompany it. 5. Length < Hour long videos do not entice, they make people evade. If I can boil down an entire weapon into 15 minutes or less, you can too. 6. Community Fostering < How they foster their community and what community they prominently feature be it reddit, twitter (god forbid) blusky, tumblr etc. This critiera is not exhaustive and other reasons may apply. Ai is frowned upon because it harms the enviroment to an insane degree and is also FUCKING LAZY. Lastly, this list will be kept as up to date as possible and only include english speaking channels as I myself am primarily an english speaker. If you have a person you'd like to see added/researched please comment/reblog or send a PM The LIST in question: Luetin09 <- Length does not equate to quality nor does 30 years of experience/engaging mean you will get everything right. Terrible at actually teaching anything meaningful. That and selling fanon as canon on occassion, big no no. However, entertaining and good at argumentation on occassion. 4/10 Majorkill <- Swearing every few seconds doesn't make you entertaining. Doesn't think too much and very much a 'hype' man archetype. Attracts ""edgy"" types. However, exposed Arch, otherwise known as Arch warhammer, as a racist so additional point awarded. 3/10 OneMindsyndicate <- Dead in the water and uses Ai. 0/10 The Amber King <- Length does not equate to quality. Nor does neglecting your channel to mooch off podcasts make you look any better. 1/10 Mrbones40K <- Opinion focused channel on the setting as a whole. Bad source because of it. Also unironically using wojaks. Entertaining at the bare minimum. 4/10 The Remembrancer <- Quantity does not equate to quality nor does Length equate to quality either. Terrible source because of the content pumping. Entertaining and passionate but loses the forest for the trees. 5/10 Deadlifts for the dark gods <- Self-help focus on the channel, not bad, however unironically believes old warhammer was "better" and "soulful" Red flag, to me anyway, entertaining at minimum but terrible for 40K lore... also a shorts merchant, ew. However, defends fulgrim on occassion, additional point awarded. 4/10 Pancreasnowork <- You're not funny nor charming constantly shitting on warhammer 40K and claiming fantasy is the best thing since sliced bread, grow up. The personality of an in-universe eldar who thinks he knows better, thats the only lore accurate thing he has in his bones. Also stop whoring yourself out for dogshit sponsers. 1/10 Baldermort's Guide to Warhammer <- Channel name is misleading, however good hearted and focused on having fun with the setting and, though no citations are quoted, I can see Baldermort is trying his best to respect the setting. Terrible for learning lore, but very entertaining and has a good writing style. Focus on making fan works and you'll be okay. 6/10 The Ashen Hollow <- "Lore to sleep to" You can't absorb lore whilst sleeping nor retain said knowledge if you are tired. Length does not equate to quality either. 2/10 The 40K codex, imperial iterator, Scholars Lore, Lotara lore, The Forgotten narrator and Archivist Tenebrarius <- All of these are Ai. Grifters, the lot of them.
The Serpents Lodge <- Good hearted and passionate but terrible for lore, sorry lads. Entertaining but definitely on the ""edgier"" side of the fandom. 4/10 Astartes Anonymous <- Fulgrim slander is not looked upon kindly, joke aside. Terrible for lore and even attempts at teaching it, whilst good hearted, fall short. Mainly miniature and community focused, however shorts merchant. Very Entertaining at least. 5/10 This is the current version of list Ver_1.0, if you have anyone you'd like reviewed and added please let me know via a PM, comment or reblog.

You're the only 40k adjacent blog I follow, so I'd like to ask if you or your followers know any good longform lore video makers? I watch Luetin09, but I want more to listen to on my commute.
I highly HIGHLY recommend OculusImperia, absolute 10/10, has also lent his voice to the Emperor TTS project which is even cooler. Has a huge backlog of content and he has a really soothing voice.

My Space Marine OC, of the Grey Knights chapter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First Warhammer 40K drawing I've ever done. It was quite a challenge. I roll with the Grey Knights. I grew up with Horror & Supernatural, so I'd be cool with slaying Daemons & using their names against them.
Most of the Imperium never even met a Grey Knight, so OCs as Grey Knights are easier to work with the overall lore.
The Space Marines have alot of Ancient Rome symbols & auch, despite that being FAR back Humanity's past. So I thought, one part of the galaxy must resemble the Zulu Kingdom. Training to fight starts at childhood & the Imperium certainly loves to recruit those that already have combat experience.
So an unknown, older Grey Knight met my OC after he accomplished his test to be a full Zulu Warrior, and its one where most don't return alive. He slayed beast with an ancient Imperial weapon that was there & discovered that he's a Psyker. Which, ALL Grey Knights are.
Space Marines get their memories of their old lives wiped, but remember pieces. Usually a personal thing that helps mold them into the warriors they are. So my OC only remembers the warrior side of the Zulu, hence the feathers on his helmet. His new name is Oriax. Every Grey Knight gets a daemon name, which daemons do not like. If the name is spoken, it hurts them.
Luetin09's Playlist of Warhammer lore is what Ive been checking out, learning before buying Space Marines 2.
Btw, if I learned about the Raven Guard first(I'm from Maryland), I would've picked that chapter.

(random ask) what YouTube video just totally transfixes you? like a video you could play for hours because that shit is like cocomelon to you? I'm high and need something to just nail my eyes to the screen rn
I often like to stick longer-form videos on the background when I'm doing something so I have something to listen to, lately I've been really digging Luetin09's 40k stuff and his latest video on the Sisters of Battle is excellent

You can get started with Luetin09's "WARHAMMER 40,000 LORE/HISTORY [In Order]" series if you want. I personally recommend it because I wouldn't wish the wiki on you if you're not the type to consume literal tons of content and lore at once (like me)..
Note: This is coming from someone who willingly watched the entirety of Critical Role's main campaigns (more than 400 hours each and longer than the One Piece anime by leaps and bounds to put it into perspective) and continues to do so, so if you're not that type of media enthusiast, take it slower and there are other channels that condense it more.
Also note: It is dark and very mature. It will contain things that are problematic in nature due to the settings and circumstances. This is to be expected as it is the norm in this sense. If you don't like it, please don't continue to subject yourself to it.
THE WIKI HAS 7K PAGES…
and yeah i can tell that it’s not the kind of thing that would interest me personally, but i can see why you like it !! i really don’t know much about it at all, but just by reading the summary/description on the wiki i could already tell that it has very detailed worldbuilding, which i appreciate (a lot of the time the worldbuilding and lore can be the most impressive and interesting part of a piece of fiction you know?)

That is 1:1 what happened to me. Then I found Luetin09 cuz I wanted to look up some lore for a reference in TTS that I didn't understand.
Now I've listened to ~25 of the Horus Heresy audiobooks (each ca 15h long lol). Still zero interest in the actual tabletop game, but man do I love the setting!
I know NOTHING of Warhammer 40k I've NEVER played any party of this game nor have I EVER seen how it works
AND FUCKING YET
I've managed to jump inside the rabbit hole that is "If the Emperor had a Text to Speech device" on YouTube. Y'know, for funsies. It looked cool and humorous and the first episode is like, 7 minutes long? What's wrong with watching a few right?
And here I am at the 25th episode of 30 mn, caught in the plot and characters that I barely know but that I know love, and shipping the hell out of magnus and captain general kitten (yes. It is his name).
Like. I knoooow that I can easily get caught in media and let everything down in my life just to think about it but. I didn't expect to let my guard down for videos parodying Warhammer 40k (again, I don't know shit about it!!!!)
I miiiiight reblog a bunch of fanart for the ship though so don't be surprised

More reflections on Luetin09’s video on the worst jobs in the imperium and I think I know the worst one.
The Emperor.
Mortally wounded by your favourite son, most of your other sons are missing or dead, confined to a chair for 10,000 years, all your plans are screwed up and your secular utopia has turned into a fascist theocracy, you can’t scratch your ass when you’re itchy and your best friend is dead. Also the chair is really uncomfortable.

While i havent seen all of his videos, luetin09 doesnt really talk about queer stuff in his videos, and generally moreso focuses on the lore side of stuff. Adeptus Ridiculous is queer positive, but also doesnt bring it up much.
I myself and plenty of other 40k fans here are happy to explain lore to you though, feel free to ask mr anything
are there any good content creators (youtubers, podcasts, etc) that talk about Warhammer 40k and are like...LGBT+ positive..? i swear im struggling to find one who's normal and not an incel weirdo 😭 pls help!

I emerge from solitude to make an inquiry:
How good is the Blackstone Fortress series? I got Ascension a while back and although it's just sitting on my desk at the moment, I plan to crack it open soon.
Also do you know Luetin09 on YouTube? What's your opinion of him?
I haven't read any of them save for the first book and maybe one short story, but I they were alright. Perfectly adequate books, from what I've read and seen.
I know of Luetin, I've heard he's a pleasant dude, afaik. I've only watched like two of his videos, because I don't really watch lore videos, but they were good videos.

If I were to try and summarize Warhammer 40k I would simply say this: Warhammer 40k is essentially a Galaxy wide Hellsing Ultimate WW3 on loop, where everybody (and I mean EVERYBODY) is going after each other for no reason other then pure vibes. And everybody is here really, there's the Nazis, The church, The "robots", The masochist "elves", The demons, the even worse demons from the wrap.
Don't forget:
Weaboo Space Gundam Communists (Tau Empire),
The actual sadomasochistic slave-trading space elf pirates (Dark Eldar/Drukhari) whereas the regular Aeldari shove their souls into special stones so their souls don't get slurped up by Slaanesh when they die,
The Adeptus Mechanicus who pray to toasters,
and the Tyranids, who aren't driven so much by vibes as they are the very instinctive drive known as "OM NOM NOM"
Tumblr media
I highly recommend watching Luetin09 (if you haven't already) for an in-depth look at the lore of Warhammer 40K starting with "WTF IS WARHAMMER 40K?" He's very eloquent and well-researched and at times makes his own jokes and is overall a great source of information. And nightmare fuel.
And if you want amusing/informative Let's Play commentary between two fans who love some them 40K, look no further than Time Warriors! Here's their LP of Space Marine, which is how I discovered them, and they've also done LPs for Dawn of War 1 and 2.

My top 5 YouTube’s for those who are looking to watch someone new.
Charlatan wonder: cute cat, cool game reviews, loves his wife and hates shitty sponsors. He literally has his anti sponsor cooking section in a few videos and other times he goes off on one so you know if he gets a sponsor it’s good quality and he’s done the research. Also he’s had the cat since it was a kitten and there’s cute videos still up of him and his wife raising the baby. Does video essays and game reviews of more obscure games like cruelty squad and his videos are such high quality.
Rt games: the classic formula of an Irish YouTuber who people call dad. Chaos but not untamed. Loves his children (his fans) and isn’t afraid to show us how proud he is of the things they do. High quality editing and relaxing livestreams. Does collabs with other Irish youtubers so if you’re into callmekevin or jacksepticeye he’s very easy to get into.
AmbiguousAmphibian: my latest find. Gameplay series channel who does a lot of start at the bottom work up to the top type of thing. Different in that a lot of his videos read more like a religious tale than a kenshi video where the player character is just a torso. You can ponder psychology while watching a guy beat the shit out of zombies he’s great. I’d recommend starting with his project zomboid zero to hero series to get a good vibe of what his channel is about.
The templin institute: I’d recommend these guys the most out of every other channel. Be it 40k or terminator lore you’re looking for, the templin institute structures their videos like dossiers and leaves many open ended questions at the end of the videos. A great way to get an introduction to a new thing and an even better gateway to personal research. Oh and they also run their own lore heavy series which I didn’t realise until my fourth episode of the first season was all them. It’s so well written. The videos are mostly audio but the visuals give them the extra umf when it comes to quality. Just don’t ask about the bestiary.
Rachel and Jun: very chill. Easy watching but informative enough that it’s still interesting. Cooking and cats what can go wrong. I love these guys they’re ace.
Honourable mentions:
Fudgemuppet
Mitten squad
Binging with babish
Luetin09
The exploring series
Volgun
Yipeekiyay mr Falcon
Pravus
