THE BOUNDING MAIN!
Nautical Lucy ~ Part 2
A salute to seafaring Lucy! Â Grab your life preserver, shiver your timbers, and set sail with part two of this all-new martime blog! Â All ashore that's going ashore!
âLucy and the Scout Tripâ (1964) ~Â When one of the dads canât go on the Cub Scout camping trip, Lucy and Viv step in.Â
Unfortunately, they sink the canoe, topple the tee-pee, and get lost in the wilderness as well! Â
âLucy is a Process Serverâ (1964) ~ When Lucy needs money for a summer vacation, she takes a job as a process server. Her first summons must be delivered to none other than Mr. Mooney. She follows him onto a freighter bound for the Caribbean for six weeks. Befre she realizes it, the ship has left the port. So much for âall ashore thatâs going ashoreâ!Â
âLucy and Arthur Godfreyâ (1965) ~ Lucy recruits Godfrey to star in a play about the founding of Danfield, which is set entirely aboard a riverboat in the South. The setting was undoubtedly influenced by the popular stage and screen musical Show Boat.Â
âLucy at Marinelandâ (1965) ~ To open season four and mark Lucyâs relocation to the West Coast, âThe Lucy Showâ goes on location to Marineland. Somehow Lucy finds herself in a water tank in a tiny raft being pulled by a trained seal.Â
âLucy and the Return of Iron Manâ (1965) ~ To pay a debt to Mr. Mooney, Lucy must go back to work doing stunts as Iron Man Carmichael.Â
This time, the film is set aboard a pirate ship.Â
âLucy and Bob Craneâ (1966) ~ Bob takes Lucy on a date to a nautically-themed restaurant with a plethora of paintings and models of ships for decor.Â
âLucy and the Submarineâ (1966) ~ Mr. Mooney goes on training maneuvers and forgets to sign some important papers. To get his signature, Lucy disguises herself as a sailor and follows him aboard a submarine. She gets trapped inside when the sub takes a dive. Â
Although the interior scenes of the sub were done in studio, there were a few establishing shots of an actual submarine in port.Â
On âThe Lucy Showâ Jerry and Sherman (Jimmy Garrett and Ralph Hart) were submarine fans, having a sub lunch box and a toy submarine.Â
âLucy in Londonâ (1966) ~ Lucy and Anthony Newley go boating on the Thames, but end up sinking when the raft springs a leak. [Note: Despite the above photo, the special was shot and aired in color.]
âLucy and Eva Gaborâ (1968) ~ To finish her latest novel, Eva Von Graunitz (Gabor) hides out at the Carter home. A member of Lucyâs Bridge Club (Gail Bonney) asks her for an autograph â on a copy of The Caine Mutiny, the 1951 Pulitzer Prizeâwinning novel by Herman Wouk. It was turned into a stage play in 1953 and a film in 1954. It is set aboard a naval shit named the U.S.S. Caine.Â
âLucy and the Ex-Conâ (1969) ~ Disguised as old ladies, Lucy and former safe cracker Rocky (Wally Cox) go undercover to catch a crook. Â
They stake out the Seadrifter CafĂ©, a dockside establishment decorated in nautical memorobilia like paintings of ships and boats in bottles. Â
âLucy Runs the Rapidsâ (1969) ~ On location at the Colorado River, Lucy navigates the rapids in a sleeping bag!Â
There are scenes on rafts both large...
... and small.Â
Will the Real Mr. Sellers... (1969) ~ is a 50-minute documentary by British actor Peter Sellers made to promote his film The Magic Christian. Some of the footage was shot on the Cunard ship Queen Elizabeth II.Â
Peter Sellers invites the viewers into a VIP lounge âto experience a VIP.â  Once inside, the VIP is Lucille Ball, who is seen in silent close-ups putting on make-up and having unheard conversations. There is no dialogue and the entire sequence lasts just 15 seconds.
âLucy Goes Hawaiian: Parts 1 & 2âł (1970) ~Â Harry takes a job as a cruise director and recruits Lucy to be his unpaid assistant.
Originally, the two episodes were to be filmed aboard the actual S.S. Lurline. When costs proved prohibitive, Lucille Ball Productions had a three-quarter scale model of the ship built on the Paramount lot. At the time, it was the second largest ship ever built at the studio.Â
There were, however, establishing shots of the Lurline leaving port in San Francisco that featured cast members.Â
The S.S. Lurline was a real ship sailing from California to Hawaii for the Matson Steamship Line from 1932 to 1963, when it was sold to the Chandris Lines and re-christened the RHMS Ellinis. The Matson Line then brought the Matsonia (first known as the Monterey) out of retirement and re-christened it the Lurline, keeping the historic name alive in their fleet. The Lurline sailed her last voyage under this name in June 1970, before being sold to Chandris and re-christened Britanis. During the 1980s it was briefly the oldest cruise ship in service. The vessel underwent one more name and ownership change before being deliberately sunk in 2000 after nearly 68 years at sea.
Naturally, Lucy boards the ship in a highly unusual way. Just as she had in 1957âČs âLucy Takes a Cruise To Havanaâ, she boards via a cargo net after missing the last call at the gangway. Â
âLucy and the Astronautsâ (1971) ~Â Harry takes Lucy along to a NASA splash-down aboard a navy ship, but before the astronauts can be medically cleared, Lucy has kissed them, forcing Lucy and Harry to join the space travelers in isolation.
Establishing shots of an actual NASA spash-down from the deck of a ship were used.Â
âLucyâs Houseguest Harryâ (1971) ~ Harry is having his house redecorated and needs a place to stay. Naturally, he imposes on Lucy. Harry falls asleep reading Boating, a magazine for boat enthusiasts.Â
Harry is a boat enthusiast who decorates his home and office with model ships and paintings of vessels.
âKim Finally Cuts You-Know-Whoâs Apron Stringsâ (1973) ~Â When Kim moves out, she relocates to an apartment building in Marina Del Rey, an unincorporated seaside community in Los Angeles County, California. Fisherman's Village offers a view of Marina del Rey's dominant feature, the Marina, the world's largest man-made small craft harbor with eight basins having a capacity for 5,300 boats. The backdrop outside Kimâs window is of the harbor and prominently features the masts of many vessels.Â
âLucy and Danny Thomasâ (1973) ~ Lucy befriends a gruff painter (Danny Thomas) who says that most artists only sell their work after they die. Harry calls the subject of Dannyâs painting a âboatâ and Danny corrects him that it is a âship.âÂ
Mame (1974) ~ The movie musical filmed scenes for the âLoving Youâ song on the Queen Mary. The Queen Mary was actually sailing at the time the film is set, but was in dry dock in Long Beach, California when the filming took place.Â
âThe Love Boatâ (1978) ~ Desi Arnaz Jr. appeared in a two-part episode in a segment titled âThe Eyes of Love.â He played a blind man who has regained his sight. The series is one of only four one-hour television shows that had a laugh track. âThe Lucy-Desi Comedy Hourâ (1957) was another.

(Cast of What's My Line? on top, Lucy and Ethel fight a loaf of bread, bottom)
Day 21- TV and Radio:Â
TV:Â
Whatâs My Line?, season 3, âArthur Godfrey,â March 30th, 1952.Â
I Love Lucy, season 1, episode 25, âPioneer Women,â March 31st, 1952.Â
Radio:Â
The Big Show, episode 54, March 30th, 1952.Â
Mr. and Mrs. North, âDeath in the Dark,â March 25th, 1952.Â
The premise of Whatâs My Line? is this: Whatâs my line= line of work. A panel of four witty and funny personalities guess the occupations of different guests. Usually 2 ânormalâ non-famous people with unusual jobs come out, and the panel has to guess in a â20 questionsâ kind of format. The last guest is a famous person. The panelists wear blindfolds, so they cannot see who it is. The celebrities often disguise their voice in some way as well. Itâs a show that always makes me laugh out loud. This week the first guest embroidered blankets for elephants to wear in the circus, the second lady made lipstick, and the celebrity was Arthur Godfrey. Most people born after the early 1960s donât remember who he was. He was a huge radio and tv personality that the country adored because of his folksy speaking manner and his natural use of tone and volume. People felt as if he was a friend speaking to them. Unfortunately behind the scenes he was kind of a jerk, and he eventually got his comeuppance for it. He cruelly fired one of his people on the air and was also caught saying some bad things when he didnât know he was on air. His sponsors pulled out, and his career fell apart.Â
I Love Lucy was a classic this week. She and the whole gang made a bet on who could survive longer living without modern technology- the men or the women. The scenes where Lucy and Ethel are trying to make bread still kill me today. Youâve probably seen the scene (or pictures of it) of Lucy taking the monstrously large loaf of bread out of the oven.Â
...And now a word from todayâs best sponsor: Stopette! Poof! There goes Perspiration! Do you want to stop the life-ruining problem of body odor? Would you like to eradicate it so you actually have a chance of being married and avoiding the inevitable social shunning that will follow? Would you like to give your mother grandchildren? Well, all it takes is one âdeft squeezeâ on a bottle of Stopette! Its fine mist will ensure you donât die alone and unloved in a smelly room!Â

A Second Decade of Movies
Ten years ago on Facebook, I compiled a list of every movie I watched, in order, from the first decade of the networkâs existence. Now, hereâs part two, covering the years 2010-2019. There are 754 titles below, though some are repeat viewings. The movie I watched the most? Harold Lloyd in âThe Freshman.â My favorite movie from the last decade? âThe Tree of Life.â
But I began the 2010s with James Cameronâs mega-hit âAvatar.â Iâll go on record saying the movie is still enjoyable ten years later, as I watched it again in 2019 with my kids to prep for visiting the World of Pandora at Disneyâs Animal Kingdom. But--I also agree with those who say thereâs little remembered from the film in the culture today. Can you name the stars? Recount the plot in detail? Mostly what we remember from the film is the spectacle of it all, game-changing when it was released in 2009.
At any rate, enjoy the list below! If a title is hotlinked, it will take you to an essay, interview, or related coverage on the film by yours truly.  Â

RIPÂ MARTY KROFFTÂ
1937-2023
Marty Krofft was born on April 9, 1937 in Montréal, Québec, Canada. With his brother Sid, Krofft created some of television's most fantastic and magical programs, mostly centered around puppetry. Lucille Ball's interaction with the Krofft was brief, but memorable.
The Krofft puppets first gained attention at the 1962 Seattle Worlds Fair where they presented a show called "Les Poupees de Paris" that included marionettes impersonating popular celebrities. In 1964-1965, they presented the (updated) show at the Worlds Fair in New York. In 1967, Ball's recorded voice, along with Jackie Gleason, Liberace, and Mae West and many other stars, was heard in âSix Flags presents Sid and Marty Krofftâs Circusâ.
On September 30, 1977, Donny and Marie welcomed Lucille Ball, who plays the Tin Lady in a Krofft-style spoof of âThe Wizard of Ozâ starring Ray Bolger. The first three seasons of "The Donny & Marie Show" were produced by the Kroffts, who also created the variety series. Ball appeared on the 2nd episode of the show's 3rd season, and the Osmonds (after a long legal battle) had finally won creative control from the Kroffts feeling they had outgrown the child-like atmosphere created by them. They moved the show to Utah and took over as producers just two months after this episode aired. In this episode, however, the Krofft vibe is still palpably present.
A few Lucille Ball / Desilu performers were seen on Krofft's many television shows.
Johnny Silver played Ludicrous Lion on TV's "H.R. Pufnstuf" (1969) and appeared as Dr. Blinky in the 1970 feature film.
Charles Nelson Reilly and Jerry Maren (both seen on "Here's Lucy") were part of "Lidsville" (1971).
1972's telefilm "Fol-De-Rol" (a film of their 1968 fairy tale puppet show) included Lucy guest stars Ann Sothern, Mickey Rooney, and Totie Fields.
"Sigmund and the Sea Monsters"Â (1972) starred Ball's good friend Mary Wickes as Aunt Zelda, and also featured Sidney Miller as the voice of Sweet Mama Ooze.
"The Lost Saucer"Â (1975) included Lucy friends Ruth Buzzi, Jim Nabors, and Vito Scotti.
"Far Out Space Nuts"Â (1975) featured Hal Smith and John Carradine, both of whom had appeared on "The Lucy Show."
Also seen on "Donny & Marie" during the Krofft years were Desi Arnaz, Jack Albertson, Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Ruth Buzzi, Buddy Hackett, Edgar Bergen, Andy Griffith, Rich Little, Iron Eyes Cody, Arthur Godfrey, and Vincent Price.

Cable Television
What is cable television? Cable television is a system in which television programs are transmitted to the sets of subscribers by cable rather than by a broadcast signal. In the 1940s that's when cable television became known.Â
In the 1940s folks where living in remote valleys in Pennsylvania with cable television. To  solve their reception problems, people put antennas on hills and running cables to their houses. In this era, the same technology once used by remote hamlets and select cities allows viewers all over the country to access a wide variety of programs and channels that meet their individual needs and desires. In the 1950s, there were four television networks in the United States. There was Columbia Broadcasting, National Broadcasting, American Broadcasting, and the Federal Communications Commissions.
Because of the frequencies gave a alot  to television, the signals could only be received in a "line of sight" from the transmitting antenna. People living in remote areas, such as remote mountainous areas, couldn't see the programs that were already becoming an important part of U.S. culture.Â
Popular shows that was on cable television was Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, you Bet Your Life, I love Lucy, ant etc. These were some of the main shows that were very popular on cable television in the 1950s throughout.Â
As cable television began to get better throughout the decades there became more money invested in to cable television. Directv became popular whoâs parent company, Hughes Electronics, acquires medium-power PrimeStar Inc.'s 2.3 million subscribers and assets for 1.32 billion dollars. Directv, with a combined 7.1 million customers is the third largest provider of video services. Directv also buys out USSB. Today, cable provides entertainment, Internet connectivity, and digital telephone service to millions of people. With a creation of approximately 800 programming networks viewed by over 93% of Americans.Â
