Lucile rose early, as she always did, completing her morning chores with practiced efficiency. By mid-morning, she had already gone over the books for the fifth time, checking and rechecking her calculations. It was a big decision—an expensive one—but she was determined. For weeks now, the idea had taken root in her mind, and today, she had decided to see it through. It'll be worth it...Just another step forward, one that could change everything for her family.

She took extra care as she dressed for the day, slipping into a proper gown and carefully styling her hair. For a moment, she lingered in front of the mirror at her mother’s vanity, a piece of furniture she rarely used. It felt strange, even indulgent, to sit there. For so many years, Lucile had avoided mirrors altogether. She’d learned to dislike what she saw—the size of her nose, the shape of her body, the wide spacing of her eyes. Silas had made sure of that. Even now, miles away from his grip, the memory of his cruel words lingered like the ghost of an old bruise.

"You're an ugly, fat, and entitled pig-faced excuse for a girl!"

Strange how words like those, flung carelessly in childhood, could linger for years—echoing as sharply as if they’d just been spoken.

Lucile’s chest tightened briefly at the thought, but then she forced herself to breathe deeply. She straightened her shoulders, brushing her fingers over the lace at her collar, and smiled. She liked her nose. She liked her eyes, her face, and the shape of her body. She stood, smoothing her skirt, and left the house with her head held high.

The automobile dealership was buzzing with activity when she arrived, mostly men in work clothes and suits, with a smattering of women standing quietly by their husbands. The "horseless carriage" had become a hot topic of conversation, especially in places like this where distances between towns were vast.

Lucile felt a little out of place as she stepped inside, her eyes drawn to a small version of the sleek carriages displayed outside like prized cattle at an auction. She paused in front of the show room model, crouching slightly to peer underneath, her curiosity getting the better of her.

“How strange...” she murmured.

Lucile was approached by the salesman, and for a moment, she thought they were about to have a productive discussion. She stood with the confidence of someone fully prepared to make a serious purchase, her mind already buzzing with questions about the car’s features, price, and practicality.

But as the conversation dragged on, her patience began to fray. Instead of answering her questions or discussing the details she cared about, the man launched into a string of excuses about why this purchase wasn’t a good idea—for her.

“Our Carriages,” he said with a cheerful tone that grated on her nerves, “Are much better suited for a man who works outside the home. If it sits idle for too long, it’ll break down and just end up being a waste of money.” If she were a man, she thought bitterly, she’d already be driving this thing home. She was no stranger to this sort of condescension, but that didn’t mean it stung any less.

Finally, she’d had enough.

“If you’re not going to sell me the carriage,” she snapped, her voice rising, “then just say so plainly! All I’m concerned with is the condition of the product—not your concern on how much I’ll use it.”

The salesman blinked, startled by her tone.

“I have the money in hand, ready to buy today,” she continued, her voice steady and firm. “If you refuse to sell it to me, I’ll go directly to the manufacturer and have it delivered to my doorstep.”

The room grew quiet. Other customers had turned to watch the exchange, their murmurs growing louder. The salesman, clearly flustered, glanced nervously around before quickly ushering her into his office to finalize the paperwork.

Lucile felt a surge of satisfaction. It wasn’t often she raised her voice, but today, it had worked in her favor.

Once the paperwork was signed and sealed, Lucile was led to a row of shiny models to choose from. Her eyes fell on a bright red automobile—a bold, eye-catching color. It was big and flashy, nothing like the utilitarian wagons she’d grown up with. Her fingers grazed the polished surface.

A strange feeling bubbled up in her chest, one she couldn’t quite name. Pride? Triumph? Excitement? Her parents could never have dreamed of owning something like this. Her father had worked every day of his life and never come close to such a luxury.

When she climbed into the driver’s seat and started the machine, it roared to life. As she guided the car off the lot, a giddy laugh escaped her. She bounced in her seat slightly, unable to contain her excitement.

She couldn’t wait to see the look on her family’s faces.

A Master of Djinn by P. Djèli Clark

Set in an alternate 1910’s steampunk Cairo, where djinn and other creatures (among other things, creepy steampunk angels) live alongside humans. We get to follow an investigator as she races to catch a criminal using a powerful object to control djinn and stir unrest. Fantastically creative and fresh, and also features a buddy cop dynamic between two female leads as well as a sapphic romance.

The Angel of the Crows by Katherine Addison*

Sherlock Holmes retelling. After having been injured fighting a war against fallen angels, Doyle returns to London to survive on only a veteran's pension. To afford a place to live in the city, Doyle finds a housemate in Crow, and eccentric angel with a great curiosity for humans and a knack for solving crime. And London needs its protector - supernatural beings walk the streets, and a someone going by the name Jack the Ripper terrifies the citizens at night.

Modern day fantasy angels

Bitter by Akwaeke Emezi

Novella, young adult. Bitter is an art student in Lucille, a city on the brink. The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman

Middle grade. In Lyra's world, every person has a daemon: an animal companion who follows them throughout life. When children begins being stolen off the street, among them Lyra's friend, she must embark on a great journey to save him, taking her to the furthest north - and beyond. A note: the angels do not appear until the second book, however this trilogy is very much worth a read from the start.

Gunmetal Gods by Zamil Akhtar

Dark fantasy inspired by the crusades. Seeking revenge, Micah the Metal leads an army of men baptized i angel's blood against the kingdom that stole his daughter. It’s up to Kevah, legendary fighter, to stop him and save his people. But ever since losing his wife a decade ago, Kevah has lost his fighting spirit. To defeat Micah, he must find it within himself a will to live again. While featuring (scary eldritch) angels, they serve more as a driving background/world-building force than as actual characters.

Horror angels

The Unnoticeables by Robert Brockway

Angels watch over humans, but not to protect us but to solve us, seeking to make the universe more efficient and clean away the undesirable. Carey, a 70s punk, doesn't like the idea of being solved. Watching fellow punks disappear off the streets, he becomes embroiled in a dangerous conspiracy. Decades later, stunt woman Kaitlyn has her own encounter with the angels and their creations - as well an older punk who might have the answers she needs.

Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White

Young adult post apocalypse. The world has ended, and sixteen-year-old trans boy Benji is on the run from the cult that caused armageddon. Infected with the bioweapon they released to bring about the end, Benji is slowly transforming into something not quite human and desperate to find someplace safe. When coming across a group of surviving teens, Benji finds something new to fight for. No traditional angels, but it does play with the concept.

Angel Radio by A.M. Blaushild

Young adult post apocalypse. A week after strange and terrifying angels appeared, humanity is dead. Sole survivor of her town, teenage Erika is left wandering on her own. That is, until she catches an odd broadcast on the radio which lures her into the newly emptied world. There she encounters dangerous creatures, but also fellow survivor Midori, who has a cryptic connection to the angels.

Sci-fi angels

Archangel Protocol (LINK Angel series) by Lyda Morehouse

Cyberpunk. In a future where religion has become the law of the land and people spend as much time in cyberspace as in reality, ex-cop Deirdre has lost everything after having been accused of a crime she didn't commit. Archangel by Sharon Shinn

The Outside by Ada Hoffman*

AKA the book the put me in an existential crisis. Souls are real, and they are used to feed AI gods in this lovecraftian inspired sci-fi where reality is warped and artificial gods stand against real, unfathomable ones. Autistic scientist Yasira is accused of heresy and, to save her eternal soul, is recruited by cybernetic ‘angels’ to help hunt down her own former mentor, who is threatening to tear reality itself apart. Sapphic main character.

The Genesis of Misery by Neon Yang

Space opera inspired by Joan of Arc. Misery Nomaki possesses rare stone-working abilities usually found among only saints and the voidmad. Not believing herself the be former and desperately not wanting to become the latter, Misery is trying to keep a low profile. Her attempt fails when the voice of an angel - or a very convincing delusion - leads her to become the centerpiece of a dangerous battle between two warring factions hoping to use her. Very unique and cool conceptually, but a little all over the place in how it handles its plot.

Halloween II, the sometimes denigrated sequel to the original, is Jeff’s pick. The film picks up right where Halloween (1978) left off but with much more of an 80s slasher feel than the first entry in the franchise. Jeff laments the “apparent” loss of Dr. Loomis and thinks Laurie Strode is more of a target than an active participant. Crystal advises viewers that if they watch Halloween II without thinking too much, they’ll have a good time. She doesn’t care one way or the other about the reveal that Laurie is Michael’s sister and points out Michael’s move into the realm of the supernatural with his ability to survive umpteen point-blank gunshots.

Chad is glad Halloween II is different from the first entry in the franchise. To his mind, it would have failed if the filmmakers had tried to copy John Carpenter’s seminal work. He agrees that the filmmakers beefed up the gore and the violence to compete with early 80s slashers. He liked it coming out of the theater in 1981 and he still likes it. Though admittedly not fond of the Halloween franchise, Bill enjoys Halloween II more now than when he first saw it. He still doesn’t care for the Laurie-is-Michael’s-sister twist, pointing out that the idea doesn’t really go anywhere in this specific movie.

Collectively, your 1980s Grue-Crew enjoy Halloween II and though admitting it doesn’t reach the heights of its predecessor, give it a hearty recommendation. Hey! It’s Halloween! At the time of this writing, Halloween II can be streamed from Shudder and Tubi (w/ads) and is available on physical media as a SHOUT! Factory Collector’s Edition [4K UHD] and on Blu-ray as a stand-alone or in a variety of box set combinations from multiple companies.
