4x20 tense. not the best ep ever but ft jimmy novak aka cas' vessel and funny just for the complete lack of sexual tension between dean and jimmy without cas inside him and dean's confusion

4x21 oop. sam getting demon blood detoxed. angst and greatly enjoyable

4x22 best epppp so good so good. so fun always good to rewatch. much destiel

6x01 NOT the best episode at ALL but really fun to watch in terms of dean gender studies. dean living normcore life with ben and lisa 6x03 CAS IS ON ONE! "we do have a more profound bond" very funny iconic destiel lines, balthazar included

6x04 BOBBY POV EP! YAY! supa funny silly lighthearted I loves it 6x05 Twilight/vampire. I am hesitant to put this one on the list but it is homoerotic vampires dean gender studies moments so I think it has to be here. minus points for soulless sam and samuel cos they sukk 6x06 ICONIC destiel whiskey pouring scene.Rest of the ep is fairly skippable. I sometimes slow this scene down to x0.25 and watch it because there's so much being said nonverbally thru their body language and eyes so watch careffffully. much to unpack, ripe for analysis. sad!Cas

6x09 dean fight the fairies episode. so much fun 6x10 meg! crowley! cas! the boys! they're all fighting. supa funny cas/crowley bits and cas sexual awakening 6x15 HOLA MISHAMIGOS! meta ep. so funny so silly so light

7x01 GODSTIEL ARC 7x02 godstiel arc continued. for first 10 mins or something 7x06 -7x12 ok so these are by far not my fav episodes but. there's something to say for them. I thought season 7 was gonna be balls without cas but there's something quite Classic Supernatural going on in these eps which is comforting and/or dean gender studies and/or dean pining for cas which makes them good actually. ft frank & some garth . ALSO bobby being a dad and bobby death sequence eps 9/10 7x17 CAS RETURNS! Emmanual!Cas awesome destiel scenes like the trenchcoat bit ….. 7x18 party on garth. truly an incredible episode. garth-centric 7x20 CHARLIE CHARLIE CHARLIE! 1st charlie ep leviathian heist style plot quite fun and silly 7x21 crazy cas! off his rocker cas! cas and dean play a boardgame! cas is so charmingly aloof and offhand! Very random spn question: do you think Bobby was a good parental figure to sam and dean?

This isn't a straightforward answer because Bobby's relationships with Sam and Dean were very different.

I’d say that for Dean, yes, Bobby was a good parental figure. In the early seasons, after John’s death, Bobby was really the only one who held any sway over Dean, who could call him on the carpet and get him to back down (4x22 Lucifer Rising, 5x18 Point of No Return). We also see in 7x10 Death’s Door one of Bobby’s memories where he’s letting Dean just be a kid for a while. Tellingly, Bobby does refer to Dean as “son” in 5x18. For his part, Dean feels comfortable turning to Bobby when he can’t talk to Sam (6x04 Weekend at Bobby’s).

For Sam, it’s a much different story. After AHBL2, Bobby tends to keep Sam at arm’s length, already nervous about his powers (3x10 Dream a Little Dream of Me). There is no sign of a young Sam in Bobby’s memories, and the way Bobby talks about Sam, well… look at this exchage:

BOBBY: Back at Niveus? I watched that kid pull one civilian out after another. Must have saved 10 people. Never stopped. Never slowed down. We're hard on him, Dean. We've always been. But in the meantime... He's been running into burning buildings since he was, what, 12?

DEAN: Pretty much.

BOBBY: Look, Sam's got a... Darkness in him. I'm not saying he don't. But he's got a hell of a lot of good in him, too.

DEAN: I know.

BOBBY Then you know Sam will beat the devil...Or die trying. That's the best we could ask for. So I got to ask, Dean. What exactly are you afraid of? Losing? Or losing your brother?

The phrasing that Bobby uses: “that kid”, “we’re hard on him”, “your brother”. He doesn’t include Sam in his familial circle, and he never refers to Sam as “son” while he’s alive. The one and only time he does this is in his letter to Sam in 10x17 Inside Man, three years after his death and two years after Sam rescued him from Hell.

Bobby’s concern for Sam also isn’t on the same level as his concern for Dean. Case in point: 7x02 Hello Cruel World when they discover that Sam’s been hallucinating Lucifer, Bobby just makes an excuse to not be in the same room with Sam but then later he’s fawning over Dean:

“Yeah. You just lost one of the best friends you ever had, your brother’s in the bell jar, and Purgatory’s most wanted are surfing the sewer lines, but yeah, yeah, I get it. You’re – you're fine.”

And again, instead of referring to Sam by name it’s “your brother”.

The saddest part of this is that Sam is clearly very fond of Bobby – he’s the one who doesn’t want to leave him alone in the hospital (5x01 Sympathy For the Devil), even before he knew that it was the demon, not Bobby, who disowned him.

It’s a shame that Bobby never really reciprocated Sam’s fondness until after he died.

hi! disclaimer that i haven’t read through the entire spreadsheet (tho i have read a lot) and i’m just looking to ask about specific instances that have been left off, especially in regards to the ‘body keeps the score section’ and the ‘gender police’ section. am engaging in good faith despite i will admit i have a knee jerk of ‘wtf’. i love dean’s character a lot and can emphasise with wanting to correct canon misconceptions despite the fact i think we see a lot of things differently. that being said this is just about canon moments. this is an extremely long post so sorry abt that!!!

so as i’m sure you know it’s extremely heavily implied to the point of essentially being canon that sam was raped in the cage. 7x02’s “you’re my little bitch in every sense of the word”. 7x15’s “the rapier wit, the wittier rape”, said by sam’s own hallucination of lucifer in reference to his torment in the cage. either sam was raped in the cage or sam considers whatever unimaginable thing happened there to be rape. it’s even more evident once lucifer is released again: “top bunk? lower bunk? do you want to share”, “solid B on the tongue action” (around 11x14/12x15)…… however as far as i can see none of these instances are counted as references to noncon or sexual violence. you're also missing sam being assaulted by the woman in white in the very first episode and toni bevell making him think he's had sex with her in s12. i understand that due to personal preference/caring abt dean more you mightve just missed these so im just pointing it out!!

im also wondering about the fact that soulless sam racks sam up a LOT of negative points just by generally being a dick with no empathy. but he’s. you know. soulless. sam insists that soulless sam was him, but dean just as strongly insists soulless sam wasnt him, so who are we to believe? and i don’t think it’s far that soulless sam’s actions are being given equal weight to normal sam’s, especially considering that demon dean doesn’t rack up any infractions at all. if you’re including soulless sam in main sam surely you need to include demon dean in main dean. a better solution is probably to exclude or separate both (which i know u do make a note of when its soulless sam in your 'gender police' section, though hes still included in the general overview).

i’m also concerned about your “gender police” section. sam expressing incredulity that dean likes kids is there, despite there being no way to prove that assumption is whatsoever gendered? meanwhile, ‘take a walk type’ (from gordon, evident from the context surrounding man’s the way he says it that it’s supposed to be mocking calling sam gay/a girl) isnt there. sam in 5x14 saying it's weird dean isn't going to a bar on valentines isnt gendered, its a brother expressing disbelief at something he thinks is irregular for deans personality. whether hes right about that or not is a different conversation but the fact remains is that hes certainly not 'gender policing' him, especially since sam isnt exactly going to one either...

sam saying "so you never even tried" when he gets back from hell and dean is still hunting isnt him expressing disgust that dean isn't following gender roles enough (and in what way is hunting Not extremely masculine anyway) its him saddened that dean broke their promises to Get Out and live a normal life. getting out is a Good Thing. hunting is an extremely dangerous life. sam didnt want dean specifically with a wife and kids because he thinks its #Normality, he just wanted dean Out and thought that was what dean wanted - in fact lisa is used in the show to show dean's ideal life inside his head in 3x10. a happy ending being conflated with a wife and kids isn't a sam-specific issue, it's just in the writing of a homophobic show. you also have sam making fun of dean for knowing about the titanic which... how is that gendered? thats just sam being a bit of a dick. and in the same episode 'making fun of him for being excited about a cowboy outfit'... cowboys are extremely masculine??? in general a lot of the lines sam says that are defined as 'gender policing' are very heavy reaches and often can be attributed to sam just teasing him/being a bit of a dick in an entirely non-gendered way. im not gonna go on and on and keep listing specific moments - im just wondering how you define what is a moment of 'gender policing'. for example, something like the fact sam is the feminised “bitch” in bitch/jerk from the very start of the show is never mentioned.

i also think youre missing a lot of moments wrt to jack's parenting (but id need to rewatch the show to check) and certainly in the insults and self worth section for things dean says to sam - an episode like, say, 4x04, is full of fucked up things he tells sam that really upset him, and it isnt even on there. i get that ur approaching it from a deangirl lens and are therefore just not as interested in sam's moments which ofc ur totally entitled to do and is morally neutral - but i do find it dangerous to portray it therefore like an unbiased examination of sam vs dean, when it's really more a lot of data on dean's treatment within the show. i really respect the effort thats gone into this however & again am engaging in good faith not as a 'dunk'!!

ever ask yourself how many times do sam & dean actually apologize in supernatural? who's more conscious of money and getting food? how sam & dean's feelings about john change over the course of the show? is sam actually more scrutinized for gender expression than dean? who most often disposes of corpses? WELL! I've finally finished my incredibly, long, in depth rewatch notes document! And it has the answers to all those questions and more!

Being partners is the core of who they are and their problem in this and the following episodes is rooted in that. She trusts him enough to make a decision she would not usually make and he goes behind her back. From her point of view. Because the irony is that he's actually really trying to not jeopardize their partnership by getting behind the sinnerman story.

He fears that this is another way his dad might be taking things from him, manipulating him, as he (presumably) did with his devil face. And so he fears he might lose his life (and her), too. Too bad his actions have the exact opposite effect, pushing her away. Which, again, I can totally see from her point of view, as she just doesn't have all the information.
