Ang Masaganang Tanawin Sa Lugar ng Bicol

Dito nag simula ang lahat Lubao to Sorsogon ang byahe dito. Grabe ang layo ng byahe, sumakay kami ng bus at ito'y umalis ng 8pm at nang makarating kami ng Sorsogon ay kinaumagahan na sakto sa tinatawag nilang "CROSSING". Kaya naman, kung ikaw ay mahina sa byahe damihan muna ang iyong supot.

Ito ang tinatawag nilang "CROSSING" na kung saan pag dineretso mo ang byahe marating mo ang dulo ng Sorsogon. Kung ikaw naman ay naliko sa pakanan na direksyon ika'y mapupunta sa tinatawag nilang "Bayan Castilla". Ito'y simpleng pamayanan sa Sorsogon na kung saan maunlad ang pamumuhay marahil nadin sa likas na ganda at yaman ng kapaligiran.

Nakasanayan na nga dito ng matatanda ang mag inom ng maaga kaya naman kapag gising mo at ikaw ay nalabas sa bakuran tiyak may makakasalubong kang inaakay, ganun paman likas pading masiyahin ang mga tao dito.

Ito naman ang Pier na kung saan nag bababa ng milyong milyon na sako ng semento. Dito din isinasakay sa lugar na ito ang mga pam-pasaherong bus at itatawid naman ng roro sa kalipat na probinsya. Madalas mo din makikita dito ang mga sasakyang militar na pang dagat na kung saan ay nag mamasid o nag babantay ng karagatan.

Ito ay ang Parola ang nag sisilbing ilaw sa dalampasigan ng Castilla. ito ay naitayo nung panahon pa ng mga hapon at nag silbing gabay ng mga taong tumatawid sa mga katabing bayan. Alam niyo ba na ang taga bukas nito kada gabi ay isang matanda na nakatira sa kalapit nitong posisyon?

Ito ay tinatawag saamin na Baluko na kahawig ng tahong ngunit mas malaki siya kung ihahalintulad. Ito ay napakasarap lalo na kung ito ay ililuto sa pamamaraan ng mga taga bicol.

With Tikoy Aguiluz (1947-2024) at the Art Circle Café in UP Diliman (13 June 2022). I met Tikoy through Humanities Professor Virginia R. Moreno, who founded the UP Film Center in 1976. But it was during the time he organized the annual Cinemanila Film Festival (1999-2013) that we became close. It was then that I learned we both trace our roots in Lubao, Pampanga and that his father and my paternal grandfather were good friends since the 1920s.

Over the years, Tikoy asked me to judge Cinemanila's screenwriting contests, help promote festival screenings, and suggest locations for his art exhibits, film shoots, and other projects. On his last visit, he sought my advice for his relatives who were planning to apply for admission to UP. He wanted tips so they may follow in the footsteps of his daughter Anima, a UP (psychology) and Columbia (journalism) alumna, to help them better prepare for the examinations. I recommended a review school but emphasized the importance of considering first the innate strengths of his nephews and nieces.

Tikoy expressed his excitement for his second solo exhibit at SM Aura on 21-31 June 2022, showcasing his oils and acrylics. He asked me to recommend a young artist from the UP College of Music to perform during the opening. I suggested Elkan Afonso R. Reyes, a UP guitar major whose performance Tikoy greatly appreciated.

We had been trying to meet for the past few months, but circumstances always seemed to get in the way - whether it was his health or traffic delays. During our last conversation, Tikoy asked me about my favorite films among his works. I mentioned "Segurista" (“Dead Sure,” 1996) as my top pick for its exceptional direction, writing (by Jose F. Lacaba), and acting, particularly praising Michelle Aldana, my former student at UP. I also expressed my admiration for "Boatman" (1984) and "Bagong Bayani" (“Unsung Heroine,” 1995), noting the depth and emotional impact of these films.

While Tikoy is renowned for his achievements as a film director, film festival organizer, and visual artist, many may not know that he was also well-read, having studied Comparative Literature at UP. He deeply appreciated Western and Philippine literature, often citing his mentors, such as Virginia R. Moreno, Francisco Arcellana, and Leopoldo Yabes.

I will truly miss Tikoy Aguiluz for his genuine kindness and the rich legacy he leaves behind in film and art.

Noong mga nakaraang buwan, ako ay may pagkakataon na bisitahin ang isang magandang pook, ang Baruya, Lubao, Pampanga. Ito'y isang lugar na puno ng kultura, kasaysayan, at kagandahan. Narito ang aking mga karanasan at mga alaala mula sa aking paglalakbay.

Una sa lahat, ang Baruya ay sikat sa kanilang masarap na pagkain. Isa itong bayan na kilala para sa mga lutuing Kapampangan tulad ng sisig, bringhe, at halo-halo. Sa aking unang araw sa Baruya, natikman ko ang isa sa pinakamasarap na sisig na naging dahilan upang madalas akong bumalik sa lugar na ito.

Subalit hindi lamang ang pagkain ang nagbibigay-kulay sa Baruya. Makikita mo rin dito ang mga magagandang tanawin. Isa sa mga paborito kong gawin ay ang maglakad-lakad sa mga bukid at magliwaliw sa mga taniman ng palay. Ito'y isang paraan para masilayan ang kagandahan ng kalikasan at ang simpleng pamumuhay ng mga magsasaka.

Sa Baruya, hindi mo rin maitatangi ang kanilang mga tradisyon at kultura. Isa sa mga naging highlight ng aking pagbisita ay ang pagsasagawa ng Parul Sampernandu o pagsasama-sama ng mga malalaking Christmas lanterns na nagbibigay-liwanag sa gabi. Ang kakaibang disenyo at kulay ng mga parol ay nagpapakita ng husay at kahusayan ng mga taga-Baruya sa sining ng paggawa ng lanterns.

Ngunit sa kabila ng kaharian ng pagkain, kalikasan, at kultura, ang totoong yaman ng Baruya ay ang kanyang mga tao. Napakapalakas ng pagkakabukas-palad at pag-aalaga ng mga taga-Baruya. Kahit hindi ako taga-roon, inalagaan nila ako nang maayos at ipinamalas ang kanilang malasakit sa mga bisita.

Higit sa lahat, ang pagbisita sa Baruya, Pampanga, ay nagbibigay-daan sa akin na masilayan ang kahalagahan ng pagpapahalaga sa ating mga kultura, kalikasan, at kapwa tao. Ito'y isang karanasan na patuloy kong dala sa aking puso at isang paalala na ang Pilipinas ay mayaman hindi lamang sa mga tanawin kundi pati na rin sa mga taong nagbibigay-kulay at halaga sa ating mga paglalakbay.

Napakasuwerte ko na makarating sa Baruya, Pampanga, at makaranas ng mga bagong karanasan at pag-usbong. Ito'y isang pook na puno ng kagandahan, masarap na pagkain, at higit sa lahat, kabutihang-loob ng mga taga-roon. Hindi malilimutan ang mga oras na ito at umaasa akong muli akong makakabalik sa pook na ito sa hinaharap.
