Sticker for Kodak 828 Format Panatomic (F-828) and Super X Panatomic (X-828) Use Found in Bantam f.8 Camera, Circa 1938 - 1939 by Kirk Thorsteinson Via Flickr: Sticker for Kodak 828 Format Panatomic (F-828) and Super X Panatomic (X-828) Use Found in Bantam f.8 Camera, Circa 1938 - 1939 The Kodak Bantam f.8 is from Kodak's series of "Bantam" folding pocket sized cameras produced from 1935 to 1953. Kodak introduced this telescoping-lens-tube variant of the series in 1938 and was produced until 1942. This was one of many cameras designed by Walter Dorwin Teaque. The back clasp identifies the model and it has a fixed f/8 aperture Kodalinear 40mm lens. It utilized 828 film which was Kodak's 35mm paper-backed roll film, yielding 8 exposures per roll. This collection has two examples of the Bantam f.8 Bakelite camera. The first example, having its original box and manual, was made in the USA. The manual was printed Aug 1938, likely with the initial launch of the camera (TPHC Item No. 20040405_ 3806919220_01). The second example, also with its box and manual, was made in Toronto by the Canadian Kodak Co. Ltd. The manual for that camera was printed July 1939) (TPHC Item No. 19982000_0205). Bantam f.8 cameras made for the USA and Canadian markets are nearly identical, except for a slightly different film advance knob and the different identifying labels / name plates. The accompanying manuals were both printed in the USA, but were printed in different years as the Canadian version of the camera was likely release 1 year later. It was common for Kodak camera models made in Canada to be released slightly after release of the same model made in the USA. There are differences in the manual, but those differences pertain to film type recommendations and most likely reflect the launch of improved film types and/or those specific film types in the 828 film format between 1938 and 1939. The Kodak Bantam series of cameras used Kodak’s 828 film. It was a 35 mm roll film with a paper backing that Kodak launched in 1935 with this camera series. The smaller spool and lack of sprocket holes allowed for smaller camera designs. 828 film used the same basic film stock as 135 film (standard 35 mm film) however 828 film had a single perforation per frame on one side of the film and 828 film had a smaller diameter spool than standard 35 mm film. The standard image size was 40 x 28 mm and each roll of 828 film produced eight exposures. The spool also used a unique set of external “teeth” at either end of the spool to lock into the cameras film advance mechanism. It is unclear what film emulsions were available at the time of launch of the film format. However, 1936 North American advertisements announcing the new Kodak Bantam Special camera refer to the use [1] Kodak Panatomic and [2] Kodak Super-X films with that camera. The Kodak Bantam instruction manual dated Aug 1938 from this collection indicates that 828 film was still available in the same emulsions; Kodak Panatomic (F828) film and Kodak Super X Panatomic (X828). The film sticker on the inside of both cameras in this collection indicates that these two films should be used in those cameras. However, in a Bantam Manual from the Canadian market dated July 1939 (also from this collection), the film format was now being offered in four emulsions; Kodak Panatomic (F828) film, Kodak Panatomic-X (FX828) film, Kodak Plus-X (PX828) film, and Kodak Super-XX Panchromatic (XX828) #Kodak, #EastmanKodak, #EastmanKodakCo.Ltd., #CanadianKodak, #CanadianKodakCo.Ltd., #Bantam, #KodakBantam, #KodakBantamf8, #Bakelite, #Bakelitecamera, #WalterDorwinTeaque, #828, #828rollfilm, #828format, #Kodalinear, #Kodakfilm, #KodakPanatomic, #KodakPanatomic-X, #KodakSuperX, #KodakPlusX, #KodakSuperXX,
