Review: Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions - Heart Throb
Tumblr media
“Due to various events, Yuuta and Rikka are living together. This secret co-habitation is so exciting for the two lovebirds! Or so it should be... Is having a chuuni girlfriend too high of a hurdle for Yuuta, who never even went out with a normal girl?! Yuuta worries about how to advance his relationship with Rikka. And then everyone else, Nibutani, Kumin, and Dekomori, have powered up by advancing a grade. Furthermore, the cause of his chuunibyou outburst in middle school, the girl who calls herself Sophia Ring Saturn the 7th, Satone Shichimiya appears... This is the long-awaited second season of the adolescent romantic comedy revolving around chuunibyou that makes you laugh and cry.“
Due to various reasons, i never reviewed the two seasons together because I knew when I watched the first one that there would be a bit of time before I could watch the second season, but I am here and the deed is done! Also someone must have gotten wise to my tricks because no matter what I did I could not gather any screenshots of my viewing so this is a review sans pictures. Either way, this was a great season, a rare better than the first showing and it was definitely worth the wait! Of course, no show is perfect, but let’s save that for...
Criticism:
Seriously its another case of adolescent/puberty syndrome because this show switches from the entire first season and then part of season 2 saying BANISHment this world to then saying VANISHment this world. Banishment was way cooler...
Poor Isshiki, they really downgraded his role and shafted him this season. They even poke fun at it...
Also while the amount of body perv-pandreing is down, they still have the whole swimsuit arc and Nibutani seems to be in the theater club just as an excuse to have her appear as herself in as many baiting outfits as possible. (A strike against this is she never drops her character development despite this so kudos to them at least)
Show’s too damn shiny. When will this shiny anime phase be over?
I.am.just.plain.mad.about.this.fucking.school.uniforms!!!!! So in season 1 they were first years with Dekomori as a third year middle schooler and Kumin as a second year high schooler. In that arrangement we had third year middle schooler with a very similar outfit and a thin red ribbon. First year high schoolers with big red bows and second year high schoolers with green bows. BUT THEN YOU HAVE FUCKING SEASON 2 WHERE THE FIRST YEAR HIGH SCHOOLERS SUDDENLY HAVE YELLOW BOWS!?!?! AND THE MAIN CAST WHO ARE NOW SECOND YEARS DON’T GET THE GREEN BOW, BUT STAY RED!?!? AND THE THIRD YEAR STILL HAS GREEN!?!?!?! YOU JUST REALIZED WHEN YOU WERE GOING TO PROGRESS TIME IN THE STORY THAT GREEN DIDN’T EXACTLY GO WITH YOUR AESTHETIC DIDN’T YOU!?!?! WELL YOU SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT BEFORE YOU FUCKING LAID DOWN THE LAW OF THE LAND ASSHOLE. (Seriously this is hands down the thing I’m most mad about and I am downright FURIOUS about it)
Positives:
Real live confirmed lesbians and gays!?!?!?! They are side characters, but still!?!!?!?!?
I love how this show went from one graceful arc straight into what is essentially a slice of life show. The only difference is that there is actual time progression happening.
I love how Nibutani has grown. I love that she is the mom-friend of the group. Honestly, it’s one of the best renditions of family-friends I’ve seen in awhile. I really have to give this season kudos for handling what would otherwise be a harem cast and make it a perfect family instead.
Shichimiya is handled so well she made tears well up in my eyes. In any other show when they introduce childhood friend characters late in the game you know its just to create love drama, but this show took that trope and really drove her character’s development. I was sure I was going to hate her, but instead I felt her palpable pain of being in love with someone who doesn’t love you back and knowing that it’s wrong. Again, I just can’t stress how well this cast is handled... Honestly, the girls are handled so well that Togashi becomes the bland character!
Verdict:
Can I get a spin-off show featuring the Maple Hill High School's Siesta Club? It’s not that I feel done with this show, I just want an all girl competitive napping anime! +

hi, could you please tell me the name of that chuunibyou book you posted one time? it had like info on the characters and stuff. also, it'd be nice if you could tell me where did you get it. thanks!!
Hello!! Those pictures were from an art booklet that came with sentai filmwork’s US Chuunibyou season 1 collectors edition!
Unfortunately I don’t think the box set for season 1 is available anymore (or it’s at least hard to find)
There is a box set for season 2 though it does not have an art book (it’s not on sale now but it has been about $40 last time it was, keep an eye on it! https://www.sentaifilmworks.com/collections/limited-edition/products/love-chunibyo-other-delusions-heart-throb-premium-box-set )
Here’s more pics of the book :)

KyoAni re-watch: Love, Chunibyo, & Other Delusions Heart Throb
As I was preparing for my “History of KyoAni” panel at Otakon in 2015, I started to rediscover why I started to love the Kyoto Animation works in the first place. To that end, I decided to go through a re-viewing of each work that’s on Japanese Blu-ray in chronological order to see how productions evolved. It’s time to restart this process again as we head away from the Kadokawa/TBS-ordered titles and move towards the ones chosen by Kyoto Animation. This post will finish the first title adapted from the KA Esuma Bunko: Love, Chunibyo, & Other Delusions! Heart Throb
Tumblr media
After creating multiple popular anime titles in the 2000s, the big-wigs at Kyoto Animation began looking at creating their own content and gaining more of the share of the proceeds compared to simply adapting content given to them by Kadokawa Shoten and TBS. To do this, they started the first contest for these in 2009, awarding multiple “honorable mentions” in the first Kyoto Animation Awards. The first title that was chosen to be published and later adapted was a romantic comedy by the name of Love, Chunibyo, & Other Delusions by Torako. Torako then wrote a sequel to the novel which coincided with the announcement that the series would be adapted into an anime.
Time passed and Fall 2012 featured the first season of L, C, & OD to much popularity. People both domestically and internationally enjoyed the tale of falling in love with a chuunbyo character and the hilarious antics of the first half of the season. It was a simple decision to ask director Tatsuya Ishihara to adapt the second novel into a second season and capitalize on its success.
Tumblr media
However, there was a problem. Ishihara, along with series composer Jukki Hanada, used the spirit of the novel characters to tell a new story. Ishihara wanted to add a normal person to bounce the comedy off of and so Kumin Tsuyuri was born. Hanada wanted another joking character and so Sanae Dekomori was created. This showed a lack of consideration for a sequel: Sanae Dekomori was a very similar character to that of Satone Shichimiya in tone and as such her presence would simply be adding another Dekomori to offset the balance.
That’s one example of the many issues that Ishihara and Hanada had while creating this sequel; they tried to do way too much in one season without thinking of the flow of the series. While the first half of season 1 had a lot of random tales, they all progressed evenly and developed the characters. Season 2 tried to replicate that, but essentially brought the characters back to the same starting position each week at the end of the episode. The best example of this is episode 4, where Nibutani is the POV character. It has Nibutani run for student council president and Dekomori discovering that Nibutani was the person she admired all along. In a normal series, this would change how things would go the rest of the season, but for Ishihara, he reset the setting to be exactly the same at the end of the episode. Nibutani loses and Dekomori still doesn’t believe her to be the person she admires.
Tumblr media
Similarly, Ishihara wanted more relationship progression, similar to how the novel went, but lacked the ability to show said progression without feeling incredibly incremental or appropriate. He plays how slow the relationship is progressing for jokes throughout the season, but his decision to more-or-less childify Rikka during the comedic moments prevents much of the romantic mood from setting in. This also held true for the big conflict revolving for the second half: how can someone be so delusional and be in love at the same time? Rikka’s answer: you just can. It’s not a satisfying conclusion and likely shows how rushed this season was.
I’ll be the first to comment that the novels aren’t the best pieces of literature, but I enjoyed the tale of the second novel. Introducing Satone Shichimiya was a good way to get backstory from when Yuuta was chuuni and helped diversify the cast. She was the character who knew she was making things up and just wanted to have fun. She was forced to move away, but finally made her way back and found the boy she crushed on, only to discover he had just entered a serious relationship one month prior. Instead of trying to come between him and his girlfriend, she makes a decision to prove to said girlfriend that Yuuta loves her and not Shichimiya by pulling a kidnapping/battle plot.
Tumblr media
Ishihara kept the “suffering” bit and showed that later in the season (episodes 9-11), but had no other development in her character. He worried that people would instantly think “love triangle” that he kept her out of the ending animation/song group, opening credits, and any focus for the first half. Barring her introduction episode, she had maybe 5 minutes of screentime for the first 6 episodes! Some “new character” indeed. There was no reason why she was needed for this season given that Dekomori shared a lot of her attributes (chuuni who knows it’s fake, past history with a main character/Nibutani, even similar hairstyles), but Ishihara wanted something “new” and so her character suffers because he wanted so much else.
Finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the lackluster season-long plot. Rikka finds an old notebook of Yuuta’s that mentions how to reawaken the Dark Flame Dragon in episode 1. This gets ignored until episode 7 where Shichimiya randomly hands over another of the three medals. That then gets ignored again in episode 8 and then highlighted in the background of episodes 9-11, culminating in episode 11’s “battle” with it and Shichimiya to resolve her tale. And then episode 12 feels tacked-on and advances nothing story-wise.
Tumblr media
As you can guess, the composition for this season was lacking to say the least.
Visually, Love, Chuuibyo, & Other Delusions Heart Throb improves on the first season color-wise. It feels richer in color than the first season did and is enhanced by a variety of chuuni battle settings in contrast to the black backgrounds in season 1. A lot of the comedy animation returns, but very little highlights since the studio had just finished the new portions of the recap film, Free!, and Beyond the Boundary, which was heavy in animation.
Tumblr media
Soundtrack-wise, Nijine tried to replicate the success of his soundtrack for season 1, but fell a bit short. No real notable tracks to highlight this time. Both the opening and ending songs were serviceable, but offered nothing new or different in contrast to the first season or even the movie’s songs.
This season has always been rough for me to view knowing the story of the novel and vastly preferring it. The composition is weak, the jokes aren’t as funny, the characters reset at the end of nearly every episode (except for Shichimiya’s three episodes of 12), and it feels like things were being done to fill time. Instead of a sequel to something enjoyable, this proved you could have too much of a good thing and have it ruined.

Sentai Filmworks announced on Monday that it has licensed the Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! Take on Me (Eiga Chūnibyō demo Koi ga Shitai! Take On Me) anime film. The company has not yet announced how or when it plans to release the film.
The film opened in Japan on January 6 and earned 70,422,300 yen (about US$634,500) in its opening weekend to rank #6 at the box office.
In the film, Rikka is now a third-year student, but she still has "chunibyo" syndrome. University entrance exams loom on the horizon, and it's spring break, and Yūta and Rikka are together as usual. One day, Rikka's older sister Tōka declares that she's going to take Rikka to Italy with her, as Tōka is moving to Italy for work and she thinks they should move together as a family. Yūta understands Tōka's opinion, but thinks that at this rate he and Rikka will be separated. Shinka and the other members suggest that Yūta and Rikka should "elope," and thus sets the stage for Yūta and Rikka's travels throughout Japan in their escape drama.
Torako is credited with the film's original work. Tatsuya Ishihara returned to direct the film at Kyoto Animation. Jukki Hanada also returned to write the script, and Kazumi Ikeda returned to design the characters. Nijine also returned to compose the music.
Sentai Filmworks previously released the Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!, Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! -Heart Throb- television anime series on home video, as well as the Chūnibyō demo Koi ga Shitai! Lite anime shorts and Love, Chunibyo, & Other Delusions: Rikka Takanashi Version film.

Kyoto Animation makes over a dozen anime TV series and movies free to watch online    4   TOKYO
To say the past 12 months have been a difficult time for Kyoto Animation would be a severe understatement. On July 18, the company’s Fushimi studio was the site of the worst mass murder in modern Japanese history, with 35 employees killed when an arsonist lit the building on fire. Eight months later, Kyoto Animation, like all companies in the anime industry, is facing an extremely uncertain business climate as the coronavirus outbreak causes the cancellation of just about every planned anime industry and fan event, including the Anime Japan convention in Tokyo and Street Festa cosplay gathering in Osaka.
And yet, Kyoto Animation has still made the incredibly generous decision to make 17 of its critically acclaimed anime TV series and movies free to watch online, with the first becoming available Monday.
While it doesn’t specifically mention the coronavirus, Kyoto Animation’s announcement came on March 5, well after the disease began dominating the public’s attention in Japan. As part of video streaming site Niconico Douga’s Spring Vacation Youth Anime Special event, the TV series/movies will become available in a staggered schedule until March 31 (the length of time each will be available has not been announced).
At least one new Kyoto Animation title/season/movie will be released every day, with a double dose on March 30 and a triple helping on the 31st.
March 16: "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, K-On!"
March 17: "K-On!!" (episodes 1-14)
March 18: "K-On!!" (episodes 15-24)
March 19: "Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions"
March 20: "Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions -Heart Throb-"
March 21: "Sound! Euphonium"
March 22: "Sound! Euphonium 2"
March 23: "Hyoka" (episodes 1-11)
March 24: "Hyoka" (episodes 12-22)
March 25: "Air"
March 26: "Kannon" (episodes 1-12)
March 27: "Kannon" (episodes 13-24)
March 28: "Clannad"
March 29: "Clannad After Story"
March 30: "K-On! The Movie!" and "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya"
March 31: "Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!" "Take on Me" "Sound! Euphonium: The Movie – Welcome to the Kitauji High School Concert Band," "Sound! Euphonium: Todoketai Melody"
While it isn’t the only anime company making its works free to watch, the gesture is especially touching coming from Kyoto Animation. With all the company has been through, no one would bat an eye if the company were to say, “Sorry, but right now we need every single yen we can get,” and yet KyoAni, even after losing so much, still finds ways to give something back to its fans, once again showing the priority it places on human happiness and well-being.

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren | #Anime Universe
During the light-hearted episodes, things are generally okay. There’s plenty of the same chemistry between the characters and it’s always neat to see how Rikka and Dekomori will turn ordinary things into something fantastical. The episodes that focus on Dekomori and Nibutani are actually some of the series’ strongest and, thankfully, they receive a lot more focus than they did in the first…
