yes, of course it gets extremely weird, there's one episode that has a distinctive alternative timeline vibes, the light house in space.
It became weird and campy against the bleak depressing prospect of being lost in a vast area of space with colorful characters, and that is what made it wildly memorable and entertaining, tugging at the persona that Smith made over the years to fool everyone he was a hapless not quite intelligent old man to various shannigans that he goes through.
Don't take this negatively, this is very affectionate.
Also that's a laser pistol that may or may not be able to strike down a very strange figure.
oh and then there's wild west alien who looks a lot like Smith and is a cold blooded killer.

then there's that episode where smith was a father to a plant for at best a few hours.
and the episode where he spends what can be inferred as a brief eternity in a TIME LOOP from his perspective after bailing out on the Robinsons dying 3 years into their flight because his weight never sent them off course.
That episode with the time merchant very mood whiplash episode.
I have no idea why this was linked to me in chat but oh well, it's nice to reflect over the show in color!

All-Terrain Chariot Filming Miniature with Interior Character Figures from Lost in Space (CBS, 1965-1968).
This is a striking miniature of the full-sized, operational Chariot, which was based on a full-sized 1965 Snow Cat produced by Thiokol. The model retains its bubble dome and radar dish at the top front and a luggage rack in the top rear, replete with miniature steamer trunks and containers strapped in place.

The original pilot for Lost in Space was listed as having a release date of September 8, 1965, though it was considered lost and not aired until some time in the mid 1990's. Unlike the first aired episode and the series, it did not include key characters Dr Smith or the Robot. According to the unaired pilot, the Robinson family left Earth in the Gemini 12 to colonize Alpha Centari on October 16, 1997. ("No Place to Hide" Lost In Space, TV Event)
