May 1979. Okay, one time Brainiac 5 had a terrible psychological breakdown during which he killed Ultra Boy's ex-girlfriend An Ryd (so, not the universe's biggest loss, perhaps), framed him for the murder, and then used the Miracle Machine to create a universe-destroying monster called Omega.

This story, which ran in SUPERBOY AND THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, had a somewhat torturous gestation. It was plotted and laid out by Jim Starlin as a continuation of his story in SUPERBOY AND THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #239, and was intended for publication in a single oversize issue as the LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES SPECTACULAR. However, before it could be published, DC lost confidence in the format, and inker Josef Rubinstein, who'd done finishes for Starlin's earlier story and was supposed to finish this one, was no longer available. So, Paul Levitz was asked to edit Starlin's breakdowns and cut the story down so it could run as two issues of the regular Legion series, which involved discarding more than 20 pages and rearranging some of what was left; the art was then finished by Dave Hunt rather than Rubinstein. Starlin was not wild about the results, so he asked that his name be removed, substituting the pseudonym "Steve Apollo."

The story seemed set to turn Brainiac 5 into a particularly awful villain, but he was rehabilitated by writer Gerry Conway a few issues later and nothing more was said about Ultra Boy's murdered ex-girlfriend.

Switching perspectives to Kenjaku! I want to say I’m surprised, but I saw new panels of Kenjaku in the profile pics of people who reblog from me, so I already expected their reappearance.

I wasn’t expecting this chapter to be way more comedic than usual, but that’s also very in line with Kenjaku. And now that they’ve literally eaten one of their close friends, it seems they’re really going through it and are dragging the reincarnated players into their long rants. With Sukuna these past chapters, the mention of Angel in the past, Kenjaku and Tengen’s hinted history, I desperately want a flashback of any kind to their time in the Heian era. It doesn’t have to be long or anything, but I would love to actually see some of their history play out.

I can’t lie, I have always kind of hated the comedian, Takaba, (and I still do) mostly because I don’t care for the half naked character design or humor. But it works fine here. Maybe since Kenjaku is already so strange as a villain and seeks to find something in the chaos of cursed energy, so Takaba almost works with how extreme and unpredictable his cursed technique is. “Awakened players bore me” and of course Takaba is there to deliver a punchline, maybe even in the literal sense if they do fight.

I don’t know if this interaction will go on for multiple chapters or anything, but i like that it further proved how interesting Higuruma with his technique and domain, as well as how fast he adapted to sorcery and the culling games. No wonder Kenjaku only found potential in him as an awakened player. Looking forward to seeing that potential once we go back to Yuuji and Higuruma.

I was kind of glad to see the players frustrated at Kenjaku this chapter. It is annoying to make a deal to live longer in the future, only for the culling games to be so orchestrated around them dying. Kashimo never was upset over that, so it feels realistic to have this perspective from the others.

I read the fan translated chapter too and there’s some differences, but the official chapter was fine.

I do love the fan translation for the panel below just because it reminds of the arrested development “the feeling was friendship but neither had experienced it before.” It was definitely in relation to the cursed technique changing reality but the wording, especially with how comedic the chapter already was with the theme of friendship, made me laugh

don't you think it's neat that when chagol's bald face was creeping up on hak and about to become a real threat to his life yona shot first asked questions never whereas when it was her own life at stake she was ready and willing to talk things thru and settle things peacefully if only what's his face got his head out of his ass soon enough to find his mouth and put it to good use? don't you think it's super neat? bc I do

This made up for it though 👏 I don't think we've seen Kenjaku pull this kind of face before 😂 honestly if Takaba takes him out or at least puts a major dent in Kenjaku's plans, I wouldn't even be mad

He's such a funny character and I love how ridiculous his cursed technique is!
