Joe Burrow.......Tooth Fairy?!
So I have been enjoying this fandom for the longest on Tumblr, and working on some fics for the longest but hesitated to release any of them. However, after I saw that photo of Joe and Taylor Rooks from this weekend, I said, yes, lets give this a shot. This one-shot is written more to be part of a long-term series with many one-shots and a full length chapter story, than a stand alone. But my decision on that does depend on what you all think of the fic here on tumblr.
So PLEASE drop a note of what you think below!
Typically, the early afternoon was the calmest time of the day in the Burrow Household. At least on the weekdays, anyway. Ava was typically at some after school activity or just getting home. Which is why the wailing and screaming caught Joe off guard as he walked through the door after a jam-packed day of meetings, press conferences and practice.
Your 7 year old, Ava, rounded the corner at a speed that made Joe think she was running from one of the monsters she claimed lived under her bed.
“Daddy, save me! Mommy is trying to pull my tooth out!” Ava dramatically and tearfully said, plopping herself on the floor by Joe’s feet and wrapping her limbs around his leg.
“Joe, your daughter’s tooth is loose. She complained about it all day at school. The teacher literally called me about it because Av could not concentrate and was being disruptive to the other kids in her class. One of us needs to pull that sucker out, ASAP.” You told him as you walked to where your husband and daughter were.
“No, no one can touch it!” Ava cried, clamping a hand over her mouth.
Sure, your daughter had her dramatic moments, but this was a new level. Seeing as her teething stage went down like a sleepless horror film, you two expected nothing less when it was time for those same teeth to fall out.
“What if I hug you really, super tight while mommy does it? I promise it won’t be that bad, bug. And we can go get ice cream afterwards. And also, the tooth fairy, remember?!” Somehow in this situation, Joe took your chosen role of good cop right from under you.
“Can we get ice cream without her?” Ava asked, narrowing her eyes as she accusingly pointed at you.
“Excuse me, her has a name, ma’am. And she also happens to be my wife, which means she goes wherever I go. Ice cream included.” Joe told Ava with a raised eyebrow.
It’s a good thing your daughter was in the room because that last sentence alone had you ready to jump his bones. For the third time that day. Trying to conceive a second child was hard work and you and Joe had dedicated the last 5 weeks of alone time to ‘putting in the hours’ to make it happen.
“Fine. Mommy can come. But I would like 2 scoops instead of one this time. I think I earned it.” You were proud to see your own negotiating skills as a second-generation lawyer had rubbed off on your daughter. Even if your father stopped speaking to you when you left his firm one year in to join Joe in Cincinnati and start your own there. He was also not happy about the fact your choice of spouse was white. He’d always imagined you to be one half of a black power couple to one of his colleague's sons.
After a handshake to seal the deal, the three of you moved to the kitchen to complete the task at hand. Joe sat at the island with Ava in his lap, holding onto her tightly. You and he shared a look of apprehension, unsure of how Ava was going to handle this experience. Your daughter was a unique mix of strength and sensitivity, just like her parents. You washed your hands and grabbed a paper towel while you readied yourself mentally. There was gonna be screaming and crying, that would indeed break your heart; but you had to push through and pull the very loose tooth out.
Having checked it before now, you knew exactly how to grab the wiggly tooth and with one fluid motion it was out before Ava even realized.
“Mommy, NO, leave it alone!” Ava screamed, holding her mouth and turning to bury her face into Joe’s chest.
“Got it!” You cheered, gleefully doing a little dance and showing it to your husband, who took one look at the bloody thing and gagged. “that’s disgusting.”
“Oh hush boy, you saw way worse than this when she was born.” You quipped back, still beaming with excitement that you got the thing on the first shot.
“I don’t love how excited you are at pulling out our daughter’s tooth, if I’m being honest.” Joe flatly told you, but the smirk on his face kinda cancelled out the attempt at seriousness.
You simply rolled your eyes playfully at him.
“Whatever. Now are we getting ice cream or not Av?” You reached over and kissed the little girl on her cheek.
“I wanna see it first!” Ava answered back eagerly and excitedly, shocking Joe.
“Who are you people and what is wrong with you?” Joe loudly asked as Ava examined her own tooth in excitement.
“Daddy, we are Ava and Mommy.” Ava told him, turning in his lap before grabbing her dad’s face between her palms and looking at his eyes.
“What are you doing, cra-cra?” Joe asked her through squashed cheeks.
Ava giggled, “My name is Ava, not cra-cra. You are daddy and I am checking your eyes for signs of concussion. The paper said not remembering stuff and big pupils, the black circle inside the color of your eyes, are signs of them. And you DID get sacked twice on Sunday.”
Joe glanced up at you as Ava continued her examination, wondering how Ava knew more about concussions at the age of 7 than most adults.
You shrugged, “You did bump your head slightly on the last sack and had to leave the game for a few downs. And I told you not to leave paperwork laying around. She is reading way above grade level, possibly higher than the teacher said in her report card. She started reading some files I left in the backseat on the way home today.”
“Ave, I’m fine. Go get your shoes on, please.” Joe stood up with Ava and turned her toward the direction of the foyer.
“I’m starting to think we should stick to what we know. Nothing wrong with growing up as an only child. Or we do it like my dad did and we have the second when she is 16 and almost out of the house. I think two of them at this point might just be the end of us.” You giggle and settle into Joe’s arms as he pulls you into a hug.
You leaned up and peaked him on the lips, “Considering I legit blinked was pregnant with Av, might be a little too late for that, big guy.”
“I’m waiting!” Ava called from the doorway, interrupting your playful conversation with Joe.
Over the years, you all had learned how to keep a low profile and the places and areas you could go where pretty much everyone treated your little family like normal people. After Ava was born, you’d settled into a nice upscale suburb of Cincy, with a park, restaurants and stores within walking distance and everyone treated you all like normal everyday neighbors. Bengals fans were incredible grateful for what Joe had done and continued to do for the organization and team they loved. So, in return, they mostly respected his desire to live unbothered with his family. Tourists weren’t really a thing there, either.
The three of you got your ice cream, played at the park a little before heading home to work on homework and dinner.
It was 8, dinner dishes were done, Ava was in bed with her tooth under pillow awaiting the tooth fairy when you walked into the living room where Joe was watching game film.
“I’m gonna go take a bath and then do some work, put this under Ave’s pillow before you come up for bed, please.” You kissed his cheek and placed a folded up $5 dollar bill in Joe’s hand.
He glanced at the money in his palm before looking up at you with a stank face, “Doesn’t 5 seem a little cheap?”
“I got a dollar per tooth and turned out fine, blessed baby boy of Robin.” You playfully poked at Joe being a spoiled momma’s boy.
Getting her approval was something you felt like you were still working on, even though she’d welcomed you with open arms years ago when the pair of you met at LSU while you were there attending law school.
Joe squinted at you, “ha, ha. I’m just saying if I got $5 in 2003, our daughter should be getting more than that in 2029. Inflation is real, my love.”
You smirk, unable to form words and kiss his forehead, “I can’t with you. Give her as much cash as you want. Just make sure she’s asleep when you do it. Her figuring the tooth fairy thing out is the last thing we need, especially after she spent half of Christmas dinner telling your family we were liars cause we wrote from Santa on those gifts.”
“Well if little Caleb Smith had kept his god damn mouth shut, she would have thought they were from Santa!” Joe spitefully spoke of the little boy that connected the Santa-not-being-real dots for Ava during their class Christmas party.
Joe waited till way after 10pm to slip the $10 under Ava’s pillow. He could tell by the shallow breathing she was asleep but called her name a few times to be sure. When he got no response, he knelt next to her bed. Softly lifting her head and the pillow, he quickly swapped the tooth for the money and slowly placed her head and the pillow back down.
“Love you, bug.” Joe whispered, kissing her forehead and walking towards the door.
“I knew it. You and mommy are the tooth fairy.” Ava’s voice rang through the quiet room just as Joe reached the threshold.
Joe panicked, “Av, your dreaming, go back to sleep.”
Ava sat up, arms crossed and a smile on her face, “I’ve been awake since you and mommy tucked me in so I could meet the tooth fairy. You and mommy are Santa and the tooth fairy, aren’t you? What about the easter bunny? Are you him, too? And don’t lie, daddy!”
“No. Absolutely not.” Joe scoffed, taking a little too much interest in studying her door frame.
“Mommy is right, you are a terrible liar.”

Love Is You - chapter 28/final
a/n: And we came to the final chapter... I hope you liked the journey with Scarlett. Give her a gift and share your final thoughts about her or the fanfiction❤️🌹🐾
It has been 7 months since Scarlett and Severus moved into Scarlett’s retirement house in Naxos. Severus has retired after he found out about Scarlett’s illness because he wanted to spend all of his time with Scarlett. Scarlett hasn’t wanted him to do that sacrifice for her but Severus was persistent. When they moved to Naxos in June, first couple of weeks passed with decorating the house; their choice of decoration style was a mix of coastal and Greek. After the decoration was done, Scarlett needed to accomplish her other retirement dream which was buying ducklings! Severus reconciled Scarlett that buying only 2 ducklings is enough. She has wanted more but they ended up buying a yellow one and a Rouen one. Scarlett named the Rouen one “Cookie” since it has dark spots and looked like a chocolate chip cookie, yellow one was Severus’s to name and he named it “Milky” just to go with cookie and milk theme. Luckily, Scarlett’s cat Athena got along with the ducklings and they all became the cutest trio ever.
Scarlett and Severus had times of their lives during the whole summer in Naxos. They went to swimming, discovered every corner of the island, had long walks and many more; but their favourite activity to do together was sailing with their small boat and reading books middle of the sea. They believed that either island’s weather or those activities helped to ease Scarlett’s illness a bit. She wasn’t having heart aches or pains frequently and she has passed out only couple of times during the summer. She got even better when Carina and Leo came to visit her time to time. Scarlett wanted to spend rest of the year in Naxos too, they went to London for 2 weeks in September for Scarlett’s yearly check-up and to visit her parents and Carina since she was took Severus’s job after him. When they came back to the island, it was calmer than before since the summer season has ended and all the tourists were back at their countries. They liked it better that way and enjoyed the silence of the island. Everything was going good and well until November arrived. Like how trees lose their leaves in fall, Scarlett started to lose her health. Now she was waking up nauseous every morning and the moment she got off the bed dizziness was adding to it as a plus, some days she wasn’t able to eat anything whole day because of that. In addition to this her blackouts became more frequently, and she would faint regularly. Somedays Scarlett would be in such a bad mood and cry her eyes out until she fell asleep. These days were the worst ones for Severus, he would try his best to calm her down and ease her pain but after Scarlett fell asleep, Severus would go by the sea and cry there all by himself.
Last week of November, Scarlett insisted to invite her children, her parents and Sirius to Naxos; saying that she wants to see them one last time. Those words stabbed Severus in the heart, and they had a small argument over it because Severus wanted her to believe that nothing will happen to her. But in the end Severus sent patronus messages to all of them, explaining the situation a bit. Scarlett haven’t said anything about her illness to anyone still. When they got Severus’s message, all was panicked and couldn’t understand what happened to her so suddenly. Her parents and Sirius apparated there in the same day with the message, Carina and Leo came in the night of the same day. Severus explained them her illness beforehand which did lead to an argument between them, they were angry that Severus hasn’t said anything to them until this day even in secret from Scarlett. But in the end, they all realized that arguing won’t help anything and it was time to see Scarlett. She wasn’t able to get out of the bed, so all went to see her in the bedroom. She was sleeping in the dark blue sheets which made her to look even paler than usual, her hair colour was the only lively thing on her at the moment.
Ricardus went over to his only daughter and woke her up by kissing her cheek softly. “Wake up princess...”
“Dad...” Scarlett looked at him sleepily and tried to sit up. “You came.” When she realized all the people she wanted to see was in the room, her sad eyes sparkled with happiness. “You all came!”
“Of course we did mummy!” Carina jumped on the bed to snuggle her.
“Be careful Carrie.” Leo warned her, he was extremely tense since he found out about his mother’s condition. Leo was the mummy’s boy since birth and he adored Scarlett in every way. Possibility of losing her was killing him.
“It’s fine Leo, come join us baby.” Scarlett held a shaky hand out for Leo who happily accepted it and snuggled into his mother too.
The air of the room was unexplainable, everybody’s eyes had a sad expression when their lips were forced into a smile. They were trying to have a cheerful day just to make Scarlett happy but deep down all of them was crying internally. Especially Sirius, he was very silent. He was blaming himself for what happened to his Scarlett, he has put so much stress and pressure on her because of the fuckery they have been through. He had one job; protect his family and keep it together but he has failed terribly. Sirius shook these thoughts off and turned his attention back to Scarlett. They all took some photos together and talked for hours. Scarlett hasn’t been that happy for a long time, she even ate some food with them. Her happiness calmed everybody down for a bit.
The twins and Sirius have taken couple of days off from work so everybody would stay at the island. Severus was helping them to make the beds in the living room and the guest room, their house wasn’t that big so Ric and Aurelia would stay in the guest room while Sirius and the twins were sharing the living room. While they were on this, Scarlett wanted to talk with Sirius privately. Sirius went back to the bedroom where Scarlett was and sat next to her; silver eyes met with the forest green ones for the first time in a while.
“Siri...”
“Yes kitten.” He smiled softly at her.
“I want you to promise me one thing.”
“What is it?”
“When... when i am gone, please take care of Carina and Leo also yourself. I want to make sure that you all will be just as fine even i am not with you here no more...”
“No no no, don’t say such things. I don’t wanna hear those, Scarlett.” Sirius held her hand tightly and kissed her knuckles. “We will see our kids’ weddings and have grandchildren; we will be the coolest grandparents! Where do you think you are going without doing any of these!?” Sirius joked but his eyes were filled with tears, he was having hard time while trying not to cry.
Scarlett’s lips trembled while the tears were running down on her cheeks. Her heart broke thinking that she won’t be able to see any of these events Sirius just said. “Don’t buy little motorbikes to our grandchildren for their first birthday.” Scarlett joked trying to change the mood.
“Ah damn, i was just thinking that!” Sirius laughed but shortly his laughter turned into sobs. He snuggled into Scarlett who was halfway laying, she wrapped one arm around him while playing with his hair with the other hand. This was the way how Sirius copes with sadness, he would rest his head on either Scarlett’s chest or lap and let her to play with his hair until he was calm again. But this time Scarlett cried with him too, they poured out all the sadness they held inside.
“My lawyer will give keys to each of you when i d... you know; i prepared 4 trunks with the things i want to give you, the twins and Severus. They are in the basement of my house. When the time comes, take them okay...?”
Sirius didn’t answer her question but instead he held onto her even more. Scarlett sighed but knew he would do what she asked him to do. She looked down at Sirius who was laying next to her, head rested on her chest. “I want you to know that, i was so happy with you and i didn’t have any regrets. I think our friendship and marriage were more than just decent, they were perfectly splendid. I loved you very much Sirius Orion Black, i still do.”
Sirius finally looked up at her face, his cheeks were wet from the tears he shed; he sat up slowly. “Scarlett Serafina Rose, i love you more and always will. You are the best thing ever happened to me. I am so so so sorry for all the times i made you sad, none of them were intentional... You are my one and only.” Without a thought, Sirius closed the gap between their faces and pressed his lips into hers. Familiar feeling of 26 years filled them but this kiss was different; it was a farewell kiss and both of them knew it. Their tears mixed into the kiss and Sirius couldn’t take it anymore; he run out of the room crying.
Severus came to their bedroom soon after he saw Sirius run outside. “How are you Scar?” He asked while changing into his pyjamas.
“Good, i guess...?” She had a weird feeling whole day since her loved ones came but she couldn’t understand what; it was like she was cured in a day.
Severus turned off the lights before came to bed, but Scarlett turned on their bedside lights immediately. Severus raised his eyebrows, Scarlett hated to sleep in a lighted room even it was just a tinniest light. She noticed his confusion and explained. “I wanna see you...”
“Why is that love? Did you miss me?” Severus hugged her and kissed her tear-stained cheek.
“I will miss you...”
Severus was about to ask her what she meant but before he could, Scarlett kissed him passionately. This took Severus by surprise; since Scarlett’s illness got worse, the only intimate moments they shared were soft and slow kisses. She slowly pulled away and whispered into his ear. “You are my first, my last and my everything. I will keep your love evermore, Severus. I love you.”
Severus was used to Scarlett’s regular farewell talks by now and he hated them because they just hurt him even more but that felt different. When Scarlett looked into his night-like eyes, he got lost in hers; Severus always loved how big and meaningful her eyes were.
“Tell me you love me...” Scarlett’s whisper brought him back to reality.
“I love you more than anything in the whole wide world Scarlett, you know that. You are my luck.” Severus kissed her one last time. Scarlett rested onto his chest then he started to sing their song “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” to put her to sleep while playing with her hair. Her eyes closed slowly and she dived into a peaceful sleep.
The next day a shriek woke everyone up; it was raining cats and dogs with loud thunders. The weather simply reflected everyone’s feelings about today. They were planning to stay couple of days more but they changed the plan and took Scarlett to London with them. London days weren’t any different, they were gloomy and smothery. Severus wanted to turn back to Naxos for Scarlett’s birthday, they have decided on celebrating it there this year and he wanted to make it happen.
Severus was listening to a slow music from the record player and drinking some wine when his eyes caught the window, it was snowing for the first time this year in the island. Severus smiled happily thinking that Scarlett’s usual birthday wish was happening. Since it was midnight and officially her birthday, he ran up to their bedroom to wake her up and let her know about the snow. When he walked into the room, Scarlett was already awake in their bed. She was looking like a snow angel in her white satin sleeping gown, Severus grinned at her while moving the curtains aside.
“Surprise! Just how you wished for your birthday, love.”
“I haven’t wished for snow this year, i have only wished to be able to celebrate it...”
“We can start celebrations right now if you want, it passed midnight. Happy 56 my love!”
Scarlett didn’t respond to him; she was staring at him rather sorrowfully. He leaned against the wall behind him to support himself.
“I am not here, all of this happening in your head Severus...”
Severus shook his head while whispering “no” constantly.
“I died that night in your arms... It was your scream to wake everyone up in the following morning... You all took me to London for my funeral...”
“STOP! Please stop...”
Severus cried out while sliding down on wall to the floor. He buried his face into his palms and cried his heart out. When he calmed down, he kissed Scarlett’s promise ring which he was wearing on his pinkie now.
“I love you Scarlett... We will meet again…”

Reinstate Your Driver’s License File a Petition in Bankruptcy
If a New York State resident incurs New York State tax debt which including interest and penalties exceeds $10,000, under a existing program New York State Department of Taxation and Finance may suspend a taxpayer’s driver’s license to enforce collection of the past due balance. See New York Tax Law Section 171-v. While the program has enjoyed considerable success in helping New York State raise funds to augment its depleted coffers, for the unsuspecting taxpayer who is completely ignorant that falling behind in his tax payments to New York State could result in the taxpayer being grounded, unable to use his vehicle even to drive and engage in gainful employment so as to amass funds to make inroads on the tax debt, the loss of the use of a driver’s license can be both devastating and debilitating.
While various steps can be taken by a taxpayer to obtain relief from the suspension, such as entering into a repayment plan, or proving “undue economic hardship”, these procedures can be time consuming and even ultimately unsuccessful.
When faced with somewhat limited time consuming and potentially unsuccessful alternatives, a preferable solution might be to simply file for bankruptcy.
The Department of Taxation and Finance itself has acknowledged that it may not suspend a driver’s license while a taxpayer is seeking relief under applicable federal bankruptcy laws. See Technical Memorandum, TSB-17-13(4) I dated August 8, 2013. When faced with the prospect of substantial delays in being able to drive one’s vehicle, immediately upon notification to the taxing authorities that he has filed for bankruptcy a taxpayer has the right to the reinstatement of his license.
Typically, a delinquent taxpayer will receive from the tax department a letter which will include a “Consolidated Statement of Tax Liabilities”. The letter will also advise the taxpayer how to pay the liabilities or to request additional information. Finally, the letter will notify the taxpayer that his driver’s license can be suspended by the Department of Motor Vehicles upon failure to pay taxes. The taxpayer must then respond to the payment demand within 60 days. A failure to timely respond will result in notification by the taxing authorities to the Department of Motor Vehicles to move forward to suspend the taxpayer’s driver’s license.
Thus, this 60 day notification creates a window which may be utilized to file a bankruptcy petition which would then have the immediate effect of forestalling the suspension of the driver’s license.
Moreover, even if a driver’s license had already been suspended, the filing of bankruptcy petition thereafter would have the (short term) benefit of reinstating the driver’s license.
Obviously, much more needs to be discussed to fully understand the bankruptcy process, various bankruptcy alternatives and a mechanism for dealing with the tax debt in a bankruptcy case, and these are all important issues. However, in any event, the immediate benefit of a filing for bankruptcy to cease in its tracks actions by New York State to suspend a driver’s license cannot be overestimated in providing immediate and inexpensive relief to a beleaguered taxpayer.
Our experts would be more than happy to discuss with you the bankruptcy process and how it might be beneficial in dealing with tax and other categories of debt.

Don't you want to take time and get to love me? We could build a perfect world I got tricks I really want to show you I could be your perfect girl - Wolf Alice, “Your Love's Whore"
~~~~~~~
“Okay, I can’t deal with this anymore. I have to say something.”
You looked up from your textbook to see the disappointed stare of your best friend, Aly, from the other side of the bar. She worked as a bartender, so sometimes you would hang out with her while she was working, maybe do some homework, and she would give you drinks with the employee discount price.
The two of you had been best friends since you were in middle school. When your mom died and your dad went back to prison, you were originally supposed to be shipped off to live with an aunt in another state that you had never met before, but Aly’s parents decided to claim legal guardianship over you, allowing you to live with them. From then on, you and Aly had become inseparable, even following each other to college.
You snorted softly and took a sip from your drink. “Oh boy, this should be interesting,” you said sarcastically, and Aly rolled her eyes as she tossed the bar towel over her shoulder.
“You are acting way too casual about the whole Aaron thing.” You groaned, but she didn’t give you a chance to speak up. “He just shows up out of the blue after two years, and you dive right back in, head first, and act like nothing changed? You’re not even going to ask him what happened?”
You sighed. You knew that this was going to be a conversation that Aly was going to have with you at some point, and you were actually a little surprised that it took her a full month before saying anything, but that didn’t mean you liked it. “Yeah, because the murder of his ex-wife and the attempted murder of his son makes great pillow talk. No, I haven’t talked to him about that.” You rolled your eyes as you finished the rest of your drink. “And I don’t need to. The only reason you’re making this a big deal is because you don’t like Aaron.”
She stared at you in disbelief. “Don’t like him? Babe, how can I have any opinion on him if I don’t know him? I didn’t even know that you were sleeping with him until you called me crying because you thought-”
“I really don’t want to have this conversation,” you cut her off, and you pushed your empty glass towards her, wordlessly asking for a refill. You didn’t want to go through those memories right now. Or ever, if you could help it. “I don’t need to know everything about his life. It’s not like we’re getting married.”
Aly raised an eyebrow at you as she started to make you another drink. “Maybe not, but do you want to? Do you want an actual relationship?”
“No!” you said, too quickly and too defensively, but it was true. You liked what you had with Aaron, all of the benefits and fun parts of dating somebody without any of the responsibilities. But you understood where Aly was coming from.
If there were such a thing as “Build-A-Boyfriend”, and if you were being completely honest with yourself, your ideal partner would probably be a lot like Aaron. More age appropriate perhaps, less baggage for sure, and most likely with a different job, one that didn’t slowly chip away at his soul until he became a shell of a man.
But somebody determined and focused like him. With a soft side like his, and the same dry sense of humor as him. A person you could talk to for hours, who sees you and pushes you towards greatness. Maybe even somebody who makes you feel special because they can only ever relax and be carefree around you. Somebody who just wants to do good in the world and who cares.
Somebody like that.
Aly opened her mouth to say something, but it quickly closed it as she looked at the entrance. “Damn, there’s a group coming in. Okay, I actually have to do my job now. But we will talk about this later.”
You started to tease her until you caught sight of the said group walking in. “Shit,” you hissed under your breath, turning your back towards the door and praying they didn’t see you. “We summoned them.”
Aly looked at you in confusion. “Y/N, what-”
“That’s Aaron and his team,” you whispered, although it didn’t matter much, “and will you please stop staring?”
A gasp left Aly’s mouth and, in true best friend fashion, she didn’t stop staring. Despite Penelope’s invitation a week earlier, you had been able to avoid going out with the BAU team. It wasn’t that you didn’t like them - you actually really liked being around them - but it would have made things way too complicated with Aaron. He compartmentalized even more than you. “Which one is he?” she asked excitedly, and you had to reach over the bar to get her to turn around.
“You’re going to draw so much attention to yourself,” you hissed, and the two of you started to frantically talk over each other.
“Because I want to know which one-”
“- Tell you later -”
“- have to at least take their order -”
“- Really don’t want to see them -”
“- Coming over here now -”
“Hey Y/N!”
You grimaced to yourself before turning around on the barstool, forcing a smile. Penelope was the one who greeted you, but the rest of the BAU had made their way to where you were sitting. The looks they were giving you unsettled you, like they all knew something you didn’t, but you decided to chalk it up to nervousness. Aaron, however, was standing in the back and looking about as mortified as you felt.
“Hey guys,” you said, stretching out each word. You weren’t drunk enough for this. “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world…”
“Casablanca,” Spencer noted out loud.
Aly smirked and leaned against the bar. “Y/N, are you going to introduce me to all of your FBI friends?”
You had to fight the urge to glare at her, because you knew what she was doing. She wanted you to introduce her to Aaron, but she was just going to have to wait. “Aly, this is the BAU team. BAU team, this is Aly.”
Aly pouted at you but surprisingly said nothing else. You weren’t sure if you were grateful for that or if it just made you more nervous.
Emily looked at the open textbook that was long forgotten next to you. “Are you studying at a bar?” she asked, amusement evident in her voice. “I thought only Reid did that.”
You shrugged and closed the textbook. “I was studying, but I gave up on that about an hour ago,” you admitted.
“Good!” Penelope said excitedly. “Because if you’re not studying, then you can join us!”
Your eyes flicked nervously to Aaron, whose face was completely unreadable. You wanted him to give you some sign of what he thought would be the best, but he just stared at you, stoic as ever. The conversation that you had with Aly was playing on repeat in your mind, making you feel sick. You didn’t care about Aaron’s past. You couldn’t care.
“Oh, I don’t want to intrude,” you settled on.
“It’s no intrusion at all,” Rossi piped up, and you and Aaron both stiffened. Rossi knew about you and Aaron, so the fact that he was encouraging you to mingle with the rest of the group was a bad sign. “And besides, drinks are on me tonight.”
Aly laughed from behind the bar. “If that’s the case, then she is definitely joining you guys so that she can stop mooching off my employee discount without even tipping me.”
So just like that, it was settled. You grumbled something about always tipping as you grabbed your drink and your textbook before following the group to a large corner booth. You didn’t miss the smirks each of the team members was throwing your way, and you definitely noticed that they left the only open seat next to Aaron. The two of your exchanged tight-lipped smiles as you slid into the empty space, careful not to touch Aaron. This was partly because you wanted to keep a calm and collected exterior, even if the team did know about you and Aaron - which you had started to suspect.
It was also partly because the idea of being Aaron’s dirty little secret right in front of his coworkers was too tempting, and you already had 2 long island iced teas, so you did not trust your self-control.
“So Y/N,” JJ started, breaking you out of your thoughts. You had hoped, maybe naively, that they would just ignore you and let you observe for the night. “Does Aly go to law school with you?”
You laughed despite yourself and you shook your head. “God, no. Although, she did take the LSAT with me so that even if I totally bombed it, I wouldn’t have the worst score.”
“What did you get on it?” Spencer asked, and you saw Aaron perk up slightly at the question.
“A 174,” you beamed.
“Look at you go! You’re like our own personal Elle Woods!” Penelope praised, and your heart swelled at the use of the word “our”, like you were already a part of the group.
“I wish,” you chuckled. “But that brilliant bitch got a 179.”
A simultaneous “Who?” came from both Spencer and Aaron.
“From Legally Blonde?” you prompted, but were met with more confused stares. “The greatest lawyer movie of all time?” They shook their heads again. “Okay, you both need to watch it, it’s a classic. Miss Woods was quite literally the only reason I was able to get through my first year.”
Well, that and fucking Aaron every chance you got, but they didn’t need to know that.
You heard a gasp come from Penelope. “We should do another movie night! We haven’t had one of those in a while.”
Emily laughed and nudged Penelope softly. “Do you not remember the fiasco we had last time we did a movie night? We almost burnt down Rossi’s house.”
Laughter erupted from the table as multiple parties started to talk over each other, and you were happy to slide into the background, making little quips when the conversation called for it. The most surprising part of the whole night was how easily you got along with the BAU group, and how much they seemed to like you. Less surprising, however, was how acutely aware you were of Aaron’s thigh, which was now pressed against your own.
Aaron had stayed completely silent since the time the team walked up to you, and you could only imagine what was going on in his head. This whole situation was probably a living nightmare for him, and you couldn’t say you blamed him. Your choice to keep Aaron a secret from your friends was just that - a personal choice. You didn’t want them to fuss over you or put delusions in your head of a future with Aaron. You wanted to be able to enjoy your privacy.
But the implications for Aaron were much more severe, especially now that you were actually working at the FBI. People would start to question his judgment, whether or not he was fit for his job. They would question if he had taken advantage of you or manipulated you, and that would all be before they even found out that the two of you were sleeping together years ago. He could very possibly be seen as just a high ranking government official who was sneaking around with a girl almost 20 years his junior.
In other words, it would look really, really bad for him. You downed the rest of your drink in one go.
Aaron raised his eyebrows as he watched your actions, his gaze heavy. His eyes ran up and down your body, and you could feel yourself start to overheat. He felt much closer than he was. Somewhere in the back of your mind, you noticed that the rest of the team had scattered among the bar - some playing pool, some ordering more drinks, and some in the bathroom - which left you and Aaron alone in the booth. There was enough room that he didn’t need to have his leg pressed up against you, and he definitely didn’t need to bring his hand down to your knee, but he did.
“So, a 174? Impressive.”
“Mhm,” you mused, keeping your voice casual. “Does that surprise you?”
“Not at all,” he responded, no hesitation in his voice.
His response didn’t surprise you much, but you preened at the compliment all the same. You wanted people, especially Aaron, to think of you as effortlessly successful and to be impressed by you. So you didn’t show them the countless hours spent in the library, and the many all nighters you pulled. You were careful to only show people the parts of you that you could brag about, like your class rankings or debates on subjects you were an expert in, so that it looked like it came naturally to you. So you didn’t look like you were struggling.
Part of that came after your mom died. You didn’t want everybody fussing over you and treating you like you were breakable, so you quickly decided to show that you were independent. If you didn’t give people a reason to worry about you, they’d leave you alone.
The other part of that came during law school. You knew yourself enough to realize that it was probably because of Aaron, and how much he rubbed off on you. You wanted to be engaging like him, to be able to completely command a room without even saying a word like him. You wanted success like him. Aaron noticed that early on and challenged you. He let you debate with him just so that you could practice going against somebody smarter and more experienced than you. And it paid off.
~~~~~~~
You stared at the email on your phone, your cheeks sore from how much you were smiling. You had already told all of your friends, but their reaction wasn’t as satisfying as you wanted. They were ecstatic for you, but realistically, you only wanted the approval of one person.
Your thumb hovered over Aaron’s contact in your phone, debating on whether or not to call him. This could probably be a text, but Aaron was so formal when texting, even when dirty texts were involved. Besides, you wanted to hear Aaron’s approval, and even more than that, you wanted his attention. Even if it was just for a minute or two, you wanted his attention in the middle of a weekday, something you never got.
Before you could talk yourself out of it, you hit the call button and brought the phone up to your ear.
“Aaron Hotchner,” came the greeting, formal as ever.
“Aaron, hi,” you started, and you were happy that Aaron couldn’t see the way you were nervously tugging the hem of your shirt.
There was a beat of silence. “Y/N,” he said, surprise evident in his voice. “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, everything is great! I, uh…” You realized that you didn’t have a good explanation to give to Aaron as to why you were calling him while he was at work. “Is this a good time?”
You could hear light footsteps on the other side of the phone, followed by the soft click of a door closing. “That depends on the subject matter,” he mused, his voice lowering.
All the nervousness you felt melted away. “I made law review!” you blurted excitedly. “I just got the email and I didn’t have anybody else to tell. And God knows you’ve helped edit my papers enough, so I figured I’d share this with you.”
You wished that you could have seen Aaron’s face. You wanted to know if he was smiling, or if he looked proud. In hindsight, telling him in person probably would have been more rewarding.
“I knew you’d get it,” he told you sincerely. “Automatic or write on?”
“Automatic,” you told him proudly.
“Congratulations, Y/N. That’s a big deal. I’m sure you’re going to celebrate tonight. It’s Bar Review night, right?”
You hummed to yourself, attempting to calm your nerves. You dropped your voice, adding a more seductive tone. “Actually… I was hoping that maybe I could be rewarded for all my hard work? Please?”
He hadn’t said no to you yet, and you doubted today would be any different.
Aaron chuckled, low and dark. “Mhm, since you asked so nicely…” His voice trailed off, and you could practically hear him stiffen up. “But I can’t tonight.”
”Oh.” He didn't elaborate, and doesn’t have to. If it were for a case, he would have told you. When he didn’t say anything, that meant it was a Haley and Jack thing. Still, you couldn’t help but note the disappointment that bled into his words.
“Are you busy this weekend?” he asked, his voice soft. “We could meet in Baltimore. Same hotel. I can make reservations now.”
For the second time that day, you smiled so wide that your cheeks hurt. Attention was what you wanted, and attention was what you got. “Baltimore sounds good. Send me the details.”
~~~~~~~
You mindlessly stirred the ice in your empty glass with the straw, listening to the soft clinking. “What about you? What did you get on your LSAT?”
Aaron thought about it for a second. “A 176. I think.”
A bitter chuckle left your lips and you turned in your seat just enough so that you could face Aaron. You were so close to him that, even in the dark lighting of the bar, you could make out every feature on his face. “Christ, and here I was thinking I could out-lawyer you,” you teased.
Aaron took a sip of his drink — double scotch neat. “I’ve seen the way you like to argue with me. Don’t worry, I wouldn’t want to go up against you in court,” he scoffed.
“Hm, yeah but you like it when I argue with you,” you pointed out, leaning in closer to him. “Because then you get to shut me up.”
Aaron set his drink down on the table, his face never betraying any sort of emotion. “Come over tonight,” he told you, his voice lowering. The hand that was on your knee slowly trailed up your thigh, his fingers leaving goosebumps in their wake.
You smirked, deciding to mess with him a little. “Presumptuous of you to assume I don’t already have plans after this.” You didn’t, and Aaron knew that. He somehow always knew.
In spite of that, he decided to indulge your teasing. “Cancel them.” It wasn’t a suggestion, and he punctuated his demand by squeezing your thigh. “I can help you study later.”
That was all the convincing you needed. You slipped out of the booth, ready to pull him straight out of the bar, but his face gave you pause. “Meet me at my car in two minutes,” he told you firmly, and you nodded obediently and sat back down.
You watched him start to walk out of the bar, only to be stopped by Emily and Derek. You watched as the three of them talked, Aaron's whole body tensing. There was a lull in the conversation before the three of them looked over at you, Emily and Derek trying to hide their drunken smiles.
They knew. They had to know. It’s not like you and Aaron were being subtle. In some part of your subconscious, you were sure that they knew long before tonight, and that this was just a confirmation. Still, you didn’t know how Aaron was going to react. You thought that Aaron was going to deny it, or even end things with you right there. Besides that one office-sex slip up, Aaron had been so careful about keeping you a secret from his professional life, even going as far as asking you to not call his office phone. In a shocking turn of events, he just smiled and gave you a small nod before making his way towards the door.
Figuring that you didn’t need to wait the two minutes anymore, you started to head towards the exit, blushing as you went. You could feel everybody’s eyes on you the whole time, but when you looked around, none of them seemed to be judging you. If anything, they seemed… happy? You were just about to reach the doors when Penelope cut you off.
“Does this mean you’ll start having lunch with me in the Batcave?” she said excitedly, not even needing to preface her question. They all knew.
“Whenever I get a chance,” you promised.
Penelope reached down to grab your hands, covering them both with hers. “Good! It can get lonely when they’re all off saving the world.”
“Hey Penelope,” you started, pursing your lips nervously. “Is this thing with Aaron and I… is it okay? I don’t want to make things weird for your team.”
Penelope gave you a sympathetic look and shook her head quickly, like even the very act of bringing it up made her sad. “Of course it’s okay! Hotch is happier than we’ve seen him in a long time, and that’s all we want for him. He’s a good guy who has just been through too much. But if he gives you any problems, you come straight to us. You’re one of us now.”
Then, without any warning, Penelope pulled you into the tightest hug you’ve ever gotten. You could smell her perfume, something floral and sweet. “Thank you,” you said as she let you go.
“Oh no, thank you,” she retorted, grinning. “Now you go have fun.”
You laughed and walked out of the bar, making your way to the parking lot. Part of you was still worried about Aaron’s reaction to knowing the secret was out.
But when you saw Aaron leaning against his car, and you saw his smile when he looked up to see you, all your fears were assuaged. “Who ambushed you?” he called from across the parking lot, his voice light.
“Penelope,” you admitted, and he nodded unsurprised as he opened the passenger side door for you.
You buckled your seatbelt and watched as Aaron made his way into the driver's seat and loosened his tie. “Are you okay with them knowing?” you asked nervously.
Aaron was quiet as he started the car, so quiet that you thought that maybe he didn’t even hear you. It wasn’t until the car pulled out of the parking lot that he spoke. “Yes,” he told you, and it truly seemed like he meant it. Then, as a joke, he added, “Although, I reserve the right to change my mind after seeing them at work tomorrow.”
“What?” you teased. “You’re not going to spill all of the dirty details to your coworkers?”
Aaron laughed and fuck if that wasn’t the most beautiful sound you’ve ever heard. “I thought you needed to study.”
You shrugged and leaned over the center console just far enough to press a kiss to his jaw. “I do. So you better make it worth my time,” you purred into his ear, smirking as you watched his knuckles turn white from clenching the steering wheel. “Or you can get me off while I study?”
You thought back to what Aly had said about whether things changed between you and Aaron. On paper, everything had changed. There was no need for secrecy or sneaking around anymore. You wouldn’t need to travel an hour outside of the city just to be seen with each other in public. The unspoken rules were going to change, considering the two of you had broken pretty much all of them already. Aaron had changed, and so had you. It was impossible for it to be the same as it was two years ago.
But as you sat in the passenger’s seat of his car, Aaron grinning devilishly at you, you couldn’t help but think that at its core, nothing really changed.
She, along with Percy Jackson, Grover Underwood, and Clarisse La Rue, infiltrate NCIS where they team up with NCIS Agents Leroy Gibbs, Anthony DiNozzo, Timothy McGee, and Ziva David. Complete Genre: Fanfiction, Mystery, Drama, Humour, General, Action Warnings: N/A
Gibbs's command to 'bring them all' was still ringing in Tony's head as he finished dropping off the Kahale kids in the conference room. Their father was waiting for questioning.
The elevator dinged, signaling Ziva's and Gibbs's arrival. They lead Patricia Kahale in, Ziva taking point and escorting her to interrogation.
Tony walked next to Gibbs to report. "One in interrogation, the rest in the conference room."
Gibbs nodded and glanced around the bullpen. "Where are they?"
The long Island Agents. "Uh, don't know, Boss. They weren't here when we came back."
Gibbs lifted an eyebrow but stayed silent.
"So, how do you want to do this, Boss?"
"Let's start with the father."
Tony snatched the case file as they passed his desk. Then, not because he had an urge to share his current opinion, Tony said, "And the evil step-mother?"
"Let her stew."
"Right, Boss. How about the kids?"
"Have McGee bring them down. He's in charge of any incoming calls."
"Right." Tony started for the center stairs.
"Hey!" Gibbs called out. "You're with me. Write to him or something."
Tony frowned as he followed Gibbs. Although interrogation was way more fun than dealing with McProbie and the kids, Tony was uncomfortable that Gibbs wanted him to send a postcard through the building.
"Write to him?"
"Through your phone," Gibbs said.
"Oh! Er, you mean send a text."
Gibbs stopped in his tracks. Tony cringed. "I'm writing to him, Boss."
Gibbs continued on, leading them to the interrogation wing and pushed open a door even though he was never told in which room the man was being held in. Tony shuddered. The Gind. What power it beholds.
"Hey, what's going on?" Johnathan Kahale questioned as they entered. "You said this was about my son? What's going on with the investigation?"
"Mr. Kahale," Tony said, "This is Special Agent Gibbs."
"Hi," Kahale said and, after a brief hesitation, held his hand out. Gibbs shook in greeting.
"So, you are also on Michael's case? I had only met two other agents before being picked up by Agent David and Agent DiNozzo here. I didn't realize how big your teams are."
"Yeah," Gibbs chuckled, "I'm getting that a lot recently."
"Oh," Kahale said, unsurely. Tony understood. He would have said the same thing to that.
"So, how long is this going to take? With the kids here, I should really speak to my wife."
"Your wife is also here, Mr. Kahale," Tony said.
"Really? Can I please see her?"
"No," Gibbs said.
"What? Why not?"
"You are both suspects," Gibbs said.
"Excuse me?! I don't know how you came to that conclusion, Agent Gibbs, but I assure you that neither of us had anything to do with my son's death."
"Then I'm sure you can account for your whereabouts during that time," Tony said.
"I was home."
"Asleep?" Gibbs asked.
"Yes."
"Your wife?"
"Right beside me."
"Did you know about Michael's presence in the area?" Tony asked.
"It's like I told the other agents. No."
"And your wife?" Gibbs asked.
"No."
Gibbs reached into the case file and placed a sheet down.
"Explain," Gibbs said.
"I don't understand," Kahale said. "Are these my phone records?"
"Yeah," Tony said, "There were three calls during the night. One of which you made. You called Michael."
"How do you know it was Michael? It could've been anyone."
"Like who?" Tony asked. "Who would you call at one in the morning that used a number that magically disappeared after use?"
There were a couple of 'um's and 'well's as Kahale fished for an answer. And Gibbs was able to fill in Kahale's awkward moment. "Adrian Rodriguez."
Johnathan Kahale blinked. "Who?"
"Don't know him?" Tony said, hoping to get any sort of recognition, although it was apparent the name was meaningless to the man. "First Lieutenant Adrian Rodriguez. He was assigned to the same ship as your son. He used the same technique Michael used. Make a call. Dump the phone. You have quite the phone history. Remarkably, so do the First Lieutenant's parents. In fact, most of the calls you received from out of service numbers align perfectly with the First Lieutenant's folks. Gap lengths and all. Same day. Same hour. Same location."
Kahale sighed heavily. "It was Michael."
"Why'd you call him?" Gibbs asked.
"Wanted to set up a place to meet?" Tony suggested. "A place to kill him?"
"No! Never!"
"So why lie about contacting him?" Tony asked. "Was it your wife? She doesn't like him. That much is obvious. So what? Keep it hidden? Keep the son you had with another woman a little secret?"
"Michael wasn't some dirty secret!"
"He went missing," Gibbs said.
"Yeah," Tony said, adding some interpretation to that topic. "Why did he run away?"
Kahale shifted in his seat. "He didn't run away," he said. But his posture displayed the doubt he had. Interesting. If he had communicated with his son, shouldn't he have known the answer to that?
Gibbs opened the file again and placed down pictures of Michael's body in autopsy. He also placed down Ducky's official report. "He had tissue and muscle scars old enough to have been done before he disappeared," Gibbs said.
Kahale's eyes flashed up at Gibbs. "You imply that he had ever been beaten in my home, Agent Gibbs?"
"He was different," Tony said, hoping to diffuse the situation and redirect some of the clear revulsion from Kahale onto himself. "No pictures. No social life. Behavioral problems. No steady school. Mother doesn't exist. Who was she? Just some random chick?"
"She wasn't random. And she wasn't just some chick. She was intelligent. Exquisite. Knowledgeable about every subject. Well-travelled. Skilled beyond measure. She knew me before I even laid eyes on her. She's a goddess. And I fell for her, even knowing the consequences."
Wow. Tony might be jealous if his partner lit up like that about a previous flame that had no records. Not to mention, bringing a kid into the picture.
"I loved his mother. I still do. No matter how much she may now despise me. And I love Michael. I could never blame him for any of the things he brought with him. How could I blame him?"
'Blame him?'
"What happened?" Gibbs asked.
"Why'd he leave?" Tony said.
Kahale let out a breath. "He wanted to find his mother's relatives."
"Is she dead?" Tony asked.
Kahale shrugged. How helpful.
"You didn't know where they were?" Gibbs asked.
"No."
"So, what," Tony said, wrapping his head around this idea. "You just let a ten-year-old kid travel the country? Unsupervised? Alone? With not a clue where to go?"
"It wasn't planned," Kahale said, "He didn't say anything; he just left."
"But," Tony dragged the vowel out. "You were okay with his disappearance?"
The silence was the confirmation.
This was crazy! Who would do that? No, scratch that. Tony knew the answer to that. But these people just didn't fit that profile. This guy had to be lying. He was just following the given story, hoping that it would pan out.
"Well," Tony said, "that would explain why a couple of lawyers sent a missing person file knowing nothing would happen."
"Get someone to review his statements," Gibbs said, packing up the case file. "You're not charged with murder yet, but you will be charged with a list of other crimes."
Tony flung the door out dramatically. "Yeah, like child neglect."
Gibbs walked out, and Tony started to close the door, slowing down so it wouldn't close too fast. He waited for Kahale to plea. To bargain. To let loose.
But he didn't. And Tony had to eventually close the door. The click as empty as the amount of nothing they had gotten from that interrogation.
-Ζήβα-
Ziva sat on the corner of the table as Gibbs took up his spot on the chair.
Patricia Kahale sat on the other chair, hands folded and eyes pointed straight at the one-way viewing glass. She had remained silent on the car ride over. Interestingly enough, she had not requested a lawyer even though promising she would when last questioned.
Gibbs placed down the profiles of the two children, Jeremy Swallar and Natasha Hibashira.
"Last time you were here," Gibbs started, "You told me you did not recognize them."
Gibbs waited for a reaction. Mrs. Kahale did not so much as avert her gaze.
"Mrs. Kahale?" Ziva asked. 'If this is how it's going to be, we might as well just cut-'
"Who's on the other side?"
Ziva blinked, forced out of her thoughts.
"Another agent," Gibbs said.
"One of yours?"
"Yes."
"No one else?"
"No, just my guy."
"Good."
Ziva remembered how Mrs. Kahale reacted to Agent La Rue and seemed to dislike Agent Jackson. Did she know something they did not?
Gibbs tapped on the pictures. "You said you didn't know them."
Mrs. Kahale glanced at them. "I did."
"You lied."
"A mistake, surely."
"You were seen talking to them at a bar," Ziva said.
"What did you say to them?" Gibbs asked.
"I didn't say anything to them," Kahale stated. "Besides, aren't they a little young to be at a bar unaccompanied?"
"Who said they were unaccompanied?" Ziva asked.
"Was that not what you implied? Why would I talk to them, if they had their parents with them?"
Ziva had to hand it to Kahale. She could dance. Ziva gave her a little smile. If only just.
"They were looking for a ride," Ziva said, "We believe you suggested them to go to Tarsibo. He is your client, after all."
"I did not speak to them."
"You don't want to talk about them. Fine," Gibbs said, "How about we talk about your stepson. You haven't seen him for years?"
"No."
"You haven't spoken to him?"
"No."
"Your husband was," Gibbs said.
"N-" Mrs. Kahale stopped and threw them a questioning look. "If he was, I have no knowledge of that."
Ziva frowned. "So, you did not know that your husband was in regular contact with Michael?"
"No."
"Did you know your husband called him right before he died?" Ziva asked.
"No."
"You told me you didn't know he joined the Marines. Did you not know what happened to him? That he was even alive? Did you not care? Your husband never told you anything, and you never asked?"
"No," Mrs. Kahale said.
Ziva leaned back. One word for all of her questions. She was used to it, but Gibbs at least cared.
"I suppose it was his way of respecting my desire to not be a part of it," Mrs. Kahale said. She scoffed. "His way of shielding me from that side of his life."
"His ex-wife," Gibbs clarified.
"She was never his wife," Mrs. Kahale said.
Gibbs shrugged. "Your husband had a kid with her. He speaks very highly of her. I would understand if you were resentful."
Mrs. Kahale glared at him. "I don't hate her, Agents," she said, "But if she's so smart, why does she make so many rash decisions? I'll tell you why. Selfishness. Pride. She doesn't have to deal with the consequences of her actions. Someone else always deals with them."
Ziva raised an eyebrow. Yes. Definitely resentful.
"Sounds like you know her," Gibbs said.
"No. But I've heard plenty of stories."
"What kind of stories?" Ziva asked.
"Dramas."
Gibbs hummed. "You would describe them as tragedies?"
Mrs. Kahale lifted her chin. "I would."
"Like the epic stories of the Greek myths," Gibbs said.
Mrs. Kahale said nothing.
"Your husband said she was a goddess. So, was he a part of some cult?"
Mrs. Kahale kept silent.
Ziva narrowed her eyes. The woman obviously did not like whatever it was her husband and this mystery woman were a part of. Why keep silent?
"You can tell us what's going on," Ziva said, "We will help you. Why don't you say anything? Are you being threatened? Your children are here and safe."
Mrs. Kahale swallowed. "It's nothing like that."
Oh, but it was. There was a response at the indication of being threatened and her kids, just as clear as to when Gibbs mentioned Greek myths.
"The kids," Gibbs said, tapping the pictures. "How do they fit in this?"
The woman looked down and took a breath, collecting herself. Ziva sat back. 'Just when we were making progress.' Were they looking at this wrong? Were the kids simply an unrelated event?
Patricia gave an annoyed huff. "As I already told you-"
The files flew from the desk. Gibbs was frustrated. Ziva did not envy this woman. He slammed his hands on the table, glaring down at her. "Then tell me something new. And make it the truth."
No. Ziva did not envy this woman at all.
The door clicked open.
Gibbs turned his death glare at McGee.
"Um, B-Boss," he stammered, "you really need to know this."
Ziva quickly followed after Gibbs. Although apparently suicidal, McGee was still a dear friend, and Ziva wouldn't like to see Gibbs murder him.
Gibbs growled. "What."
McGee nervously wet his lips.
"Well, Ducky has already released his findings. All these reporters who were following the case got them and reported the info to their respective medias. Reshaun Sachs, the bartender; you knew that, of course- well know, you haven't forgotten. Well, he decided to find out what was going on since his business is obviously involved and-"
Oh no. McGee was rambling. And Gibbs's face was darkening with each word. Would her gun be helpful? Or perhaps her knife would be more practical. She decided on simply clearing her throat. Loudly. McGee stuttered to a stop. Ziva gave him a pointed look.
Ziva was relieved when she saw his face alight with understanding.
"Patricia Kahale was at The Drowsy Owl during the time of death. She could not have killed Staff Sergeant Michael Kahale."
-Αντώνης-
Tony did not like this.
He watched as Gibbs and Ziva entered the interrogation room.
"You are free to go, Mr. Kahale," Ziva said.
"Thank you. If I can just see my wife, then we can-"
"Your wife isn't cleared," Gibbs said.
"What?"
"She admitted to killing your son."
"What?! No! She couldn't have."
"How do you know?" Ziva said, clicking the door shut behind her.
"She was at home."
"Weren't you home as well?"
"Yes, but- she just couldn't have done it."
"We know," Gibbs said, taking a seat. "Although not in your house, she is witnessed being at a bar during the time of the murder."
"Then you know she didn't do it. That she's innocent."
"Mr. Kahale, aren't you curious as to why she would be at a bar so late at night?" Ziva asked. "Not telling you and lying that she was?"
"Maybe she was meeting with her friends. I trust my wife."
"Have any idea as to whom these friends might be?" Gibbs said.
"No, I did not see them."
"What did they tell you?"
"Nothing. As I said. I did not see them."
"But you spoke with them. You received a call before and after you spoke with Michael. A blocked number."
"You had to be awake to answer your phone. You had to have known your wife was not lying asleep next to you. Why did you lie?"
"No, I-"
"Did you follow her?" Ziva said.
"Were you at your house?" Gibbs asked.
"Ye-"
"We have your kids here," Ziva said, "We can ask them."
"How about you ask them?" Gibbs said.
"Stop, please-"
"Maybe," Gibbs said, "you can tell them why you killed their brother."
"THEY HAD HER!" Mr. Kahale screamed. "They had Patty! And they were going to kill her! Unless…unless…"
"Unless you killed Michael," Ziva finished for him.
A gasp broke Tony's attention away from the interrogation room to the reason he was placed behind the glass. Patricia Kahale stood next to him with her hands over her mouth, staring intently at the scene before her.
"I warned him. I called him. They gave me a car and a bullet. I needed to save my wife. I wanted him to help me. But he said there was no time and that there was no one in D.C. that could help."
He bowed his head. "They had my wife," he sobbed.
"No," Patricia whispered.
"She's not part of this life," Mr. Kahale said, "She shouldn't die from it. How could I have brought her into it?"
"No," Patricia said again, and the look in her eyes gave Tony a bad feeling. "John, no!"
Tony was a half-second too late. The woman ran out of the viewing room. Tony sped out after her to see her flinging the interrogation room open.
"How could you do it?!" She cried.
"Boss," Tony said, "I'm sorry she just…" He stopped as Gibbs held a hand up.
"I'm sorry," Mr. Kahale said, "But I couldn't let you be involved. I couldn't let them have you! And you came back home and didn't say anything, acting fine-"
"I was always involved! Michael's stench led them to our family even after he left. They threatened to take me, you, our kids. They told me what they did to people."
"You took up a deal," Gibbs said, "You help them get what they wanted, they leave you alone."
Mrs. Kahale nodded.
"How many are there?"
"Too many. It's a nest that has grown through some sort of pact between them all, and nothing is killing them."
"Why didn't you call the police?" Ziva asked her.
"That would just make things worse. Besides, Michael has obviously delivered a message to his people."
Gibbs froze for a second.
"Boss?" Tony asked. What was going on?
Gibbs snapped out of it. "You two," he told the Kahales, "Stay."
He stalked out of the room. Ziva and Tony followed, having to jog to keep up with him. Tony quickly texted McGee a heads up and to send the Kahale kids back upstairs. When Gibbs took the stairs, they knew whatever he figured out was bad.
"McGee!" Gibbs barked. "Search the Long Island team."
"But I already- okay," McGee easily complied, after looking at his boss, "Looking up Lima."
McGee shared his screen on the plasma as he loaded up the federal database.
"No," Gibbs said, "Not Lima. Don't go through any federal sites."
"Um, okay? Doing an internet search of Percy Jackson."
"News sites," Gibbs said.
"Boss there are hundreds of Percy Jacksons," McGee scrolling through articles, "We'll never find-"
"That one," Gibbs pointed.
It was an article from a few years ago. "Percy Jackson, Criminal or Victim?" The photo had an image of a young, disheveled Percy Jackson. And by his side…
McGee was freaking out. "Boss, I'm sorry. Their profiles should have-"
"Her," Gibbs pointed, "Age her up to now."
"Right. Aging."
McGee cut out the photo of the blonde and plugged it into the program. He had wisely shut his trap. As the image began to come into focus, Tony felt his heart stop. There was no denying it.
"Gibbs," Ziva said, quietly, "That's-"
BANG! Gibbs slammed his desk drawer closed and shoved his firearm in its place at his hip. There was utter silence in the bullpen as Gibbs strode off.
A few seconds later, Tony was the first to move. No matter how angry Gibbs was, Tony was still a cop. The rest of his teammates quickly followed.
They left the image of Annabeth Chase, otherwise known as NCIS Special Agent Anne Lima, on the screen behind them.
Seokjin and I were walking in the park, letting Hoseok and Taehyung run around happily. Jungkook was invited, but when he realized I was going too, he backed out of it… but Seokjin and I were hand in hand, watching the two boys who came play with each other.
“Jagiya?” Seokjin asked, making me pull my eyes away from Hoseok rolling on the ground. “How do you feel about… living with me?” He paused. “With us?”
“I’m alright, Jinnie,” I replied, looking back at the boys, smiling. “They’re all really sweet….”
“Do you still get anxious?” Seokjin asked. My smile faded as I sighed.
“I won’t lie to you, it’s a struggle to differentiate my fears of the past to my love for the boys…. Taehyung’s the only one I really let do whatever around me…. The rest… well… they still can’t make fast movements or anything…” I whispered, squeezing his hand gently.
“That’s okay… you’re doing great,” Seokjin whispered back, pressing his lips to the side of my head. I hummed in response.
“Jin! Jin!” Taehyung said as he ran over with Hoseok. “Let’s go get ice cream!”
Before Jin could respond, Taehyung grabbed his arm, dragging him away as he looked at me with concern. My heart sped up, I hadn’t really been alone with Hoseok just yet, but it was too late. I slowly turned to Hoseok, eyes slightly bigger as I let out a shaky breath. He whined softly, turning to the side and keeping his head down, showing signs of submission.
We started walking, just like Seokjin and I were doing, and I got up the courage to link my arm with his. His tail, on instinct, wrapped around my waist, making me smile softly. My heart felt like it was going to fall out of my chest, but I didn’t know what feelings were causing it.
“How are you, Hobi?” I questioned, quietly. I could hear his heartbeat speed up, my head close to his chest.
“I’m okay, just taking it day by day… how are you…?” There was caution in his voice.
“Actually, never better,” I replied, looking up at him and smiling. Hoseok smiled back, a big, beautiful smile, and we continued to walk.
When Seokjin came back, I hadn’t noticed him standing and watching us, Taehyung smiling big at the two of us walking around the path. They both decided to come over after a moment of admiration, handing us some ice cream.
“You two enjoy your walk?” Seokjin asked, leading us to a picnic table to sit.
“Yeah, Hoseok was telling me all about how he loves to dance,” I replied, eyes bright. Hoseok sat across from me, blushing softly.
“I’m not that good, there’s still a lot of practice I need to do…” Hoseok mumbled.
“Are you kidding?” Taehyung exclaimed, wide eyed. “You’re amazing! He’s taught all of us some moves we never even dreamed of!”
“Tae, you’re being dramatic,” Hoseok mumbled, blushing further.
“Well, I actually have a friend who owns a dance company,” I said, making Hoseok sit up straight.
“That’s right, Jeremy,” Seokjin said, pointing his spoon at me.
“If you’d like, I’m sure he’ll accept you into a class,” I said, smiling.
“With you?” Hoseok questioned, making heat rise up my neck.
“Well, I don’t think I’m too good, but…” I started, looking at the boys hopeful eyes. “I’ve been thinking about learning.” Hoseok jumped up in excitement, tail twitching furiously.
“Can Jimin come? He loves dancing too!” Hoseok said, making me laugh and nod. “And… Jungkook does too.” I paused, looking at the now nervous boy.
“Of course. If he wants to,” I replied, pulling the corners of my mouth up in a forced smile.
Taehyung tagged Hoseok, running away with the red panda following. I bit my lip, heart still racing. Seokjin reached over, grabbing my hand with my engagement ring on it, rubbing his thumb over it and smiling.
“So, tell me, should we start talking about a date now?” Seokjin whispered, making me smile.
“I think we should,” I replied, leaning over and kissing his lips softly.
At home that evening, Hoseok had told Jungkook and Jimin about the dance company. Jungkook was excited until he heard about me… so he refused, but Jimin was all for it. I was sitting in the kitchen at the island, my laptop open to some wedding planners page, as well as many tabs open with dresses and tuxedos and food, the whole shebang.
I listened to Hoseok, Jimin, and Taehyung arguing playfully about the video game they were playing just in the living room - Taehyung was winning. Yoongi was upstairs with Seokjin, who was in my office doing some paperwork before bed. Jungkook was locked away in his room, playing loud music, but you could only hear the hum of the words. Namjoon… well, I have no idea.
As if he heard my thoughts, he walked into the kitchen and to the fridge. He looked over his shoulder, offering up a drink. I nodded, and he fixed us both up, coming and sitting next to me. The familiar race of my heart began, but as always, I pushed it down, kept reminding myself that they were good, especially Namjoon.
“That’s pretty,” Namjoon said, eyeing the dress on the screen.
“I don’t know… would I suit it?” I mumbled, more to myself.
“You’re so pretty, you could suit anything,” Namjoon said, red cheeks flaring as he wouldn’t look at me. I giggled, sighing and staring at the dress with hearty eyes.
“Thanks, Joonie,” I said, smiling.
Before we continued, everything went tense. Namjoon sat up straight, looking at the archway to the kitchen. I heard Jungkook’s music shut off, stomping coming down the stairs. The hair on the back of my neck stood up as I gulped in worry. Jungkook came into the kitchen, his face red and clutching a black shirt that now had bleach stains on it.
“What did you do?!” Jungkook screamed, making me stand and my face pale. I was frozen, no words could form in my mouth.
“Kookie, calm down,” Namjoon said, standing between us.
“No, she ruined my shirt!” Jungkook screamed. “I can never replace this, you know that!!”
I saw Hoseok come into the kitchen, Jimin and Taehyung standing near the archway, wide eyed and frowning. I wanted to talk, but my fear was just paralyzing me, there was nothing I could do. Jungkook’s eyes landed on me, his face going more dark red, if possible.
“You don’t belong here,” He growled, eyes glaring. His cropped ears, made him look menacing, making me gulp again.
Jungkook shoved Namjoon, coming straight for me. The larger man was growling still, but I was frozen. Run, damnit! Just run! Instead, I covered my face. Jungkook shoved me, making me hit the counter with a bang. I squeaked out in pain, but everything seemed to freeze after that.
I felt something cold running down my chest, looking to see four long scratches that had gone through my flesh. Jungkook’s face was no longer red, just pale, his wide eyes staring at the scratches, like he didn’t know what just happened. The other boys were just as shocked, but everything seemed to speed up again when Seokjin and Yoongi came through.
“What happened?” Seokjin demanded, eyes landing on me, going soft, but there was a sharpness to his eyes, an anger. Tears streamed down my face, and I quickly regained movement, shoving past them all and running upstairs. Before I reached the top, however, I heard Jimin’s soft voice.
“Kookie… I ruined your shirt…. I’m so sorry…” I ignored this, going straight to the room I shared with Seokjin, shutting the door and going to the restroom, cleaning my wound, fear racing through me, my heart beating against my ribcage. Back to square one….
