also now that last bit is up, i'll say it. i think asmodeus should take time out of his very busy day to try to zerxus-ify amaris. a beleaguered, confused now-widower who his everpatient sister loves so very much? who got to raise his sanctimonious brother from childhood, see him bright and unaware in a way none of them have been since the dawn of time? unacceptable. if you think about it, asmodeus has to torment him. if only to draw a line in the sand. mortals can't start thinking they can get away with that sort of behavior (loving the people he loves when he wasn't there).
#critical role#cr downfall#exu downfall#asmodeus cr#amaris#it's not even loving the other gods that's the most grievous crime#it's the implication of doing so as an equal#literally the thing that got zerxus his attention#asmodeus alight with rage: you're a toy that she dropped on the playground and to prove it i'm going to pick you up and take you home#(in fairness i think amaris has certain immunity conditions zerxus. did not.#such as a grounded sense of cosmic irrelevance and the general survival instincts of someone who grew up in the fantasy apocalypse)#so i do not think he'd be successful. per say. but it would keep him busy#which is really all amaris (whose children are probably next on the displaced divine feelings target list) is asking for#he'll tolerate horrific dreams of torture and/or seduction for the rest of his life#sure why not it keeps the in-laws happy

Wake up babe, new spy au stuff just dropped
(au co-creator: @hyperfixationwizard)
König and Horangi are kind of separate from the main storyline but do play a very important part somehow, (again lol).
König was in an underground fighting ring (run by two, very well known and detested by us, Americans cough cough).
Horangi worked there but didn't fight, instead had some general duties like keeping track of bet money etc etc.
They knew each other and were fairly close, if I may directly quote Hype, "they were each other's softness in a world that only gave them hardship for a while".
That was of course until Horangi got in trouble. It's canon that he's a "dogshit gambler" so who knows. Maybe he got too cocky, maybe he bet on the wrong kind of guy, maybe he couldn't pay his debt and Graves threw him in the ring instead.
Maybe he lost and had to pay the price otherwise.
Maybe that's when he got his scars ("You act all tough and you can't even win a fight? You call yourself tiger yet you don't look like much of one to me, maybe we should fix that, huh?")
Maybe that's when Nik finds him (when he was doing god knows what, probably trying to get info about Shepherd's dirty business for the team) and takes pity on him.
He has to call some big favours and pull some strings but he manages to get the poor boy out of there.
Takes him off the grid in some little village in the middle of fuck knows where, Eastern European countryside to heal both physically and mentally.
(Horangi is the first to bear witness to the most horrendous down bad pining behaviour from Nik on Price's urgent visit for a few days.)
When Horangi completes his Training Arc™ and goes off again he does end up doing shady business again but this time things end up a lot better for him and he manages to actually own a whole ass casino in the end.
He's very cool and badass and rich and stuff. König is a pathetic wet cat.
They meet like, a decade or so later after König has also managed to get himself out of Shepherd's ring and heard about Horangi from rumours.
He's very pissed off because he thinks that Horangi abandoned him and rose to power through Graves' help and initially he goes to confront him very angry.
Horangi doesn't recognise him at first (it has to do with the mask but when and what kind of mask he wears is still a wip, all I know is that he wore a different kind back then) so it takes a bit of miscommunication, some pining and a lot of bottled up feelings spilling over until he realises why König's angry and apologises again and again explaining how much he didn't want to leave him behind and that he would've contacted him if he could.
Once they've figured their shit out, they set off to find the 141 and co as temporary allies due to a shared interest (Shepherd and Graves' crumbling to the ground).
They're actually there in The Gala when shit hit the fan and Soap was shot but didn't manage to talk to either of them before disaster struck so they don't get in contact with them until a month or so later.
#blah blalex#ghoap spy au#fun fact. the körangi arc was. largely inspired by the fact that this was originally a mafia au and i wanted to bring some crime and shady#business and mischief back for the Sparkle and the Spice. as Hype very cleverly suggested nobody said that the 141 are government spies but#theyre still too lawful for my tastes so <33333333#körangi#könig cod#könig call of duty#horangi cod#horangi call of duty#kim horangi hongjin#könig x horangi#nikolai cod#codmw2#call of duty#philip graves#general shepherd

A myth (more rarely mythus, obsolete mythe, plural myths, from ancient Greek μῦθος, "sound, word, speech, tale, legendary story, tale", Latin mythus) is in its original meaning a narrative. In religious myths, the existence of humans is linked to the world of gods or spirits.
Myths claim validity for the truth they assert. This claim to truth has been criticised since the Greek Enlightenment by the pre-Socratics (e.g. Xenophanes, around 500 BC). For the Sophists, myth stands in contrast to logos, which attempts to justify the truth of its assertions through rational evidence.
In a broader sense, myth also refers to people, things or events of high symbolic significance or simply a false idea or lie*.
For example, the adjective "mythical" is often used in colloquial language as a synonym for "fabulous-vague, fabulous or legendary".

How can it be that a man who describes himself in public as a successful businessman worth billions cannot pay a financial penalty and that someone wants to vouch for him?
Trump can't pay 450 million dollars
In February, former US President Trump was fined 450 million dollars in New York for fraud. Now his lawyers have announced: Trump cannot pay. According to his lawyers, former US President Donald Trump is currently unable to guarantee payment of a fine of more than 450 million dollars from a fraud trial. Despite great efforts and negotiations with around 30 companies, it has not yet been possible to obtain such a guarantee, according to a letter from his legal team to the competent court in New York. Several US media outlets unanimously quote from the letter, arguing that it would be "practically impossible" to make the payment on time.
Trump has received a refusal from 30 bail companies, according to a letter from his lawyers to an appeals court on Monday. Many would not provide collateral in excess of 100 million dollars and would not accept real estate as collateral.
Forbes magazine estimates the property entrepreneur's total assets at 2.6 billion dollars. Trump recently stated that his cash assets totalled around 400 million dollars.
"I thought he was a billionaire? Is he lying to the public or the court?" Law professor Andrew Weissmann poses the question of questions on X in relation to Donald Trump's liquidity: How much is there to the image of the self-made billionaire?
How much money does Trump himself have?
Last year, Trump testified in court that he had a cash fortune of around 400 million US dollars. The latest legal documents indicate that he does not have anywhere near that amount of money at his disposal, Professor of Business Law Will Thomas from the University of Michigan. However, he and the Trump Organisation would have significantly more assets at their disposal. His largest asset holdings are tied up in property. If Trump is unable to pay in other ways, he could be forced to sell some of his properties, according to Professor Thomas. His lawyers want to prevent this and warn that Trump would have no way of buying them back if he is successful with his appeal.
Where could the money come from?
Without liquid funds, there are two options for Trump to prevent enforcement for the time being.
Guarantees: A guarantee would probably be the only solution for him. This would allow him not to have to sell anything for the time being. At the same time, guarantors require collateral and often only accept cash or shares in return - not property. Trump also needs to find someone who is prepared to guarantee an enormous sum of over 550 million dollars.
Donations or campaign funds: He is also receiving support from private sources, but the sums are nowhere near enough. Trump supporters are collecting money for him on the internet, with over a million private donations having been collected so far.
Again and again, it is also about money from Trump's election campaign. Federal law prohibits Trump from using campaign funds for personal purposes. However, it is legally unclear to what extent campaign money from political action committees (PACs) and funds from the Republican National Committee (RNC) fall under this. But even these funds would be far from sufficient.
If he loses the aura of the successful billionaire self-made businessman, he also loses his aura of success.
mod
This kind of legal action would not only be a serious blow to Trump's finances, but also to his image, as he always praises himself as a brilliant businessman.
The biggest bankruptcies* of Donald Trump
It was always visible to everyone, but as long as you can keep generating capital, the myth can be maintained
Trump Ice
In 1995, Donald Trump founded the Trump Ice Natural Spring Water brand (Trump Ice for short) - his own brand of bottled drinking water. However, the sales figures were not particularly good. After missed payments to the producer and a lawsuit against Trump Ice in this connection, production was discontinued. Today, only bottles with collector's value are sold on eBay and the like.
Trump Steaks
Donald Trump founded his own steak company in 2007. The company was to be dedicated exclusively to selling his favourite food and running a steakhouse in Las Vegas. The prices for the steaks varied between 199 and 999 US dollars. Despite such bargain prices, the company had to close in the same year. The steakhouse was shut down after the health department found 51 health code violations.
Trump University
In 2005, Donald Trump opened "Trump University" - a distance learning university specialising in the real estate industry that was not officially recognised as a university. Enrolment cost up to 35,000 US dollars, but many of the course instructors, who were allegedly selected by Donald Trump himself, often did not have the appropriate qualifications. The school had to be closed down for good in 2011. Thousands of students filed a lawsuit against the former US president, who relented in 2017 and offered a settlement despite his supposed innocence. This was confirmed by the US Court of Appeal in 2018 and secured compensation of USD 25 million for the more than 4,000 ex-students.
New Jersey Generals
In 1984, Donald Trump bought his own football team, the New Jersey Generals. However, they did not play in the famous National Football League, the NFL, but in the smaller offshoot, the United States Football League (USFL). Just one year later, the team was bankrupt and the entire United States Football League with it. Trump had tried with all his might to bring about a merger of the UFSL with the NFL. This prevented Donald Trump from taking over a team in the NFL.
Trump Vodka
According to Donald Trump himself, he does not drink alcohol. However, this did not stop him from launching his own premium vodka on the market in 2005. However, production was discontinued in 2011.
Trump Magazine
Donald Trump made several attempts to land a hit in the luxury magazine segment. After two failed attempts, he launched the quarterly "Trump Magazine" in 2007, which covered topics such as yachts and other toys for the rich. However, the magazine was cancelled in 2009.
Gotrump
In 2006, Donald Trump ventured into a search engine for luxury travel. It included private jets, tickets for exclusive events and supposedly personal recommendations and travel tips from Donald Trump. However, it was shut down again after just one year due to poor reviews.
Trump: The Game
Trump tried twice to establish himself on the board game market with the board game "Trump: The Game", but failed twice. The game is, of course, about money. The game first came onto the market in 1989, but was discontinued shortly after its release. In 2005, he tried a new edition in collaboration with Parker Brothers, but this version also failed.
Trump Shuttle
In 1989, Trump bought his own airline, "Trump Shuttle". The airline was to fly business people back and forth between New York, Boston and Washington. The interior of the Boeing 727 was elegantly furnished with maple panelling and chrome seat belt buckles, and gold fittings were installed in the toilets. However, the luxury was too expensive for the passengers. Three years later, the over-indebted company was sold to US Airways.
Trump Entertainment Resorts
With the company "Trump Entertainment Resorts", Donald Trump operated several casinos in the gambling metropolis of Atlantic City, including: Trump Taj Mahal, Trump Plaza and Trump Marina. All were closed between 1999 and 2016, and the company filed for bankruptcy three times between 2004 and 2014. In 2014, debts are said to have totalled around 1.8 billion US dollars. Trump himself withdrew completely from the company in 2016 and sold his shares to billionaire Carl Icahn.
Trump Mortgage
In April 2006, Donald Trump announced the founding of his own mortgage bank, Trump Mortgage, at a press conference. He predicted a rosy future for his endeavour and that the bank would soon become the largest lender for home loans in the USA. However, as with "Trump Magazine", the timing was not exactly fortunate. Just one year later, the former US president's mortgage bank had to file for insolvency.

when i was a kid i was really REALLY into fantasy books and comics but interestingly ive noticed as an adult im like. too picky about it? i still read and love a lot of fantasy fiction but while when i was a kid i loved it because of the fantasy worldbuilding but as an adult, 99% i like it Despite it all LOL like ive noticed i prefer most fantasy stories to not dwell too much on magic systems or whatever because i just dont care EXCEPT
except. recently i have discovered that actually i do really like fantasy, low or high, soft or hard, but you need one thing. you need your main character to really REALLY care about some hyperspecific aspect of your fantasy worldbuilding and make it the foundation of the story's scenarios:
either make them autistic and really into monsters or magic or whatever (a certain tasty dungeoning manga that i have been reading recently has taught me this) OR
make them a fucking business major and do real life financial stock market bullshit but like. in fantasy medieval times with wolf goddesses (spice and wolf <3)
#i read the first spice and wolf novel early this year it was so good. so so good. they tried to do a currency shorting scheme#the wolf woman was helping. she was helping our main character play the markets. she was in on it#actually in general i need more fantasy fiction to do dubious things with money and politics. i love white collar crime in my fantasy#and of course i like the dungeony manga because that blonde bitch wants to eat everything so bad. and hes a dog. in his heart#now THATS a fantasy protagonist i can get behind. either be a dog or be a business major. im being mean to lawrence sorry#but he is a business major. this is true. he stares at notebooks that say 'supply = demand' all day#i am so picky tho with fantasy worldbuilding is the thing. sometimes i like 99% of a world but then they throw in something i think is dumb#and im like. come on man. but its not their fault. because what i think is cool is not always cool. i want fantasy to either be about eatin#or unethical financial practices. so. um. OH and i would love to see some legal dramas in fantasy#im sure theyre out there. i should look for em. i wanna see fantasy copyright law so bad#none of my pickiness applies to games tho im a lot more forgiving. theres still a bunch of stuff i dont care about in a lot of games#worldbuilding. but because im playing it i can ignore it easier i guess LOL i dont know why im like this!!!#i swear i genuinely used to eat up any and all fantasy!!! i dont know why im so picky now!!!!!!!!!!!!

Civil rights groups warn tourists about Florida in wake of 'hostile' laws
ORLANDO, Fla. — The NAACP over the weekend issued a travel advisory for Florida, joining two other civil rights groups in warning potential tourists that recent laws and policies championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida lawmakers are “openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals.” The NAACP, long an advocate for Black Americans, joined the League of United…

i was thinking more about asmodeus' waterdhavian sona in the car and decided that patience is
a) a lawyer because that was the funniest imaginable thing i could think of, for asmodeus to secretly have a law firm in waterdeep (the dm came up with the slam dunk name 'patience is a virtue legal solutions' for his practice)
and b) significantly shorter than celeste
literally no one who even remotely knows celeste can figure out why they're dating and everyone agrees he's astronomically out of patience's league
#the glasses are obviously not prescription#he just thought looking like a reedy bespectacled little dork was a perfect disguise#who would ever suspect this guy of being an evil deity#part of me really hopes the party gets arrested in waterdeep at some point now#so celeste can be like 'i'm not saying anything until i speak with my lawyer' and asmodeus has to come get him out of jail#anyway i like to think about waterdhavians gossiping about celeste#i mean. his family was like beloved in their neighborhood and celeste is memorable and performs a lot#i like to think he's like a minor local celebrity#also every employee at the law firm is actually a devil in disguise except the receptionist who is a normal human woman with no idea#all of the devils have become extremely fond of her#if you insult nancy's baking you will find yourself being ripped to shreds in the nine hells#i literally just want like a sitcom about this law office now#asmodeus also has like two or three devils who are specifically there to dress up as patience and pretend to be him#since he generally isn't actually on the material plane and doesn't have time to run a small business#doodles#oc: celeste#fel's ttrpgs#dnd: tales from the dancing sea dragon#technically#asmodeus#i do not know what they're looking at in the second photo

Wow, $250 whole dollars!
#I know the city can't technically fine them more than that for a first time offense but still#the actual permits to remove or trim the trees are significantly more expensive#and what's really fucked is that a LOT of things are like that in LA#it's considered the cost of doing business to sell food from a truck without a permit#because actually going through the process of licensing is way more than the fines#and it sucks because for a normal person who generally tries to abide by the law you'd get screwed#crime actually does pay here and it pays well#and you have no idea how much I detest saying that because California gets shit on for being so blue/liberal by the conservatives#so I absolutely hate giving them any sort of ammo#but frankly California has massive fucking problems with the way this state handles crime#I'd get fined more for being slightly too late in crossing the street at the cross walk and I KNOW people who HAVE been fined out the ass#for that exact thing#we need actual fucking consequences for companies that break the law#steep fines that actually get used for something good like oh I don't know#MAYBE ADDRESSING OUR HOMELESS CRISIS? so people aren't y'know dying on the street#California may be a blue state but frankly our state and local governments don't care about us any more than any other state's government#we have to FORCE them to care otherwise we're gonna see more shit like this

i've seen a few comments mourn internet archive as if it's being entirely shut down, and while this decision sucks and is bad (and will have significant negative ripple effects), the internet archive is not currently being shut down. specifically, access to 500,000+ previously available digital books it hosted is being cut off. (this decision was actually made a while ago and that the ia tried to appeal but ultimately failed to reverse.)
https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/4/24235958/internet-archive-loses-appeal-ebook-lending
here is a link to the petition mentioned in the screenshot: https://www.change.org/p/let-readers-read-an-open-letter-to-the-publishers-in-hachette-v-internet-archive?
here is also a donation link for the ia if you have the means and believe their work is important: https://archive.org/donate/
heartbreaking news. between this, tougher crackdown on illegal tv streaming sites (kimcartoon has just permanently gone down), coming after scanlation sites, and the general moral panic around AI having people actually root for wider nets and stricter enforcement of copyright/ip law, i have a feeling the state of art and media online is going to get much much worse.
the precedent this sets for what people are allowed to do with physical print books they own is absolutely horrible, since there is nothing the Internet Archive loaned out that they didn't have a 1:1 legally acquired physical copy of before digitizing.
“This appeal presents the following question: Is it ‘fair use’ for a nonprofit organization to scan copyright-protected print books in their entirety, and distribute those digital copies online, in full, for free, subject to a one-to-one owned-to-loaned ratio between its print copies and the digital copies it makes available at any given time, all without authorization from the copyright-holding publishers or authors? Applying the relevant provisions of the Copyright Act as well as binding Supreme Court and Second Circuit precedent, we conclude the answer is no,” the decision states. [...] “This characterization confuses IA’s practices with traditional library lending of print books. IA does not perform the traditional functions of a library; it prepares derivatives of Publishers’ Works and delivers those derivatives to its users in full,” the court held. “Whether it delivers the copies on a one-to-one owned-to-loaned basis or not, IA’s recasting of the Works as digital books is not transformative.”
i hope all of the authors who went to bat for taking books away from the public don't know a moment of peace for the rest of their careers lol. i hope it was worth solidifying the publishing industry's grip on the entire sphere of literature just to get a few extra royalty pennies in your pockets.
#something to also keep in mind is this why at best copyright is a double edged sword#copyright is not morality or ethics. it is business law. and like most laws generally it's the most rich and powerful who benefit#so while it's understandable that copyright is being used as a tool to fight generative ai grifters rn#it will likely bite everyone in the butt later. anyway.#(and anyway i have some slightly more complicated feelings on the ia but that's enough soapboxing for now)#internet archive
