went to a good ol fashioned catholic funeral today. haven’t been to a real funeral since my grandma died (2018) and it was very nice tbh. got to see my family friends who i don’t see as often anymore. then got french food with my dad and sister and now im a bit drunk and took the dog im watching on a nice little walk at sunset ���� im a bit. emotional.

overall I liked watching Joy Ride but

one thing that bothered me, because it wasn't explicitly addressed, is how Lolo was always shaming Audrey for "basically being white." Like oh don't even try eating XYZ food because you won't be able to handle it, instead of being supportive and helping her to connect to and enjoy her heritage. Like, even if Audrey was "raised white" or whatever that dubiously means, that doesn't change the fact that she has no access to white privilege. She looks Asian, she is Asian, that's what people-- especially white people-- see when they look at her. And that's literally the essence of what her childhood trauma is about-- she has zero connection to her heritage, and yet is ostracized, bullied, microaggressed, stereotyped, and oppressed by white people for it anyway! (Especially by white boys and men, who she spends a lot of time trying to vertically-assimilate with as a result.) She's rejected/scrutinized by white people for being Asian while simultaneously being rejected/scrutinized/criticized by Asian people/her best friend Lolo for "being white"/not Asian "enough." That kind of double fronted oppression undoubtedly only fueled Audrey's insecurity and internalized racism throughout her childhood into adulthood. Lolo gets to call out Audrey on her very real racism/Sinophobia specifically (wish Lolo hadn't used boba as an example, that was inane) but the movie never calls out Lolo specifically for the racial component of the way she treated Audrey. Obviously, Lolo apologized at the end, but it was a blanket apology for being an asshole/bad friend holistically lol. Just wished it had been spelled out for the benefit of any viewers who didn't pick up on how Audrey really needed an ally/a united front against racism in their tiny white town but Lolo was only able to provide that partially, and undoubtedly made some of Audrey's insecurities worse.

TLDR mixed race people and adoptees need and deserve space to just exist as themselves. When mixed race people/adoptees grow up to be racist and/or self hating there is always a reason... we all (white people and POC) need to make sure that we're not the reason lmao

Anyway Dolores' verse in WDTAB and the present tense and the idea of her knowing - for sure! - and not being able to do anything about it was one of the first things I went feral over so maybe I actually do have way too many feelings about this. Like I don't wanna fight over it I'm just ignoring Jared again.

going back and forth on the notion of writing this thing as if it were actually aimed at a younger audience versus writing for an older audience who might resonate with experiences of liminality... so far leaning towards the latter... which means i can probably lean further into the heavier elements if i wanted to... much to consider
