Why I love the First Law Trilogy:
The dashing hero figure is a total idiot.
The female love interest is a drunk.
I would lay down my life for Glokta.
Men have no idea what they're doing half the time but a few slaps on the back and a couple of drinks and they're grand.
I keep getting my mythology wrong, and I have no idea what the Laws actually are but did I mention that I would knit Glokta a really warm blanket?

Logen is also a fantastic play on reader expectations in regards to tropes because we all think he's the western/crime/fantasy/comic book archetype, the Clint Eastwood who changed his ways but the sins of his past keep catching up with him. We expect him to get back in the business because he has no choice if he wants to survive and/or effect greater good, we expect him to struggle sticking by his new outlook, we expect him to choose better after his setbacks. We want John Wick to adopt a new dog, we want that redemption, we want Logen to wake up every single day and choose to do the hard thing.
And for such a long time he manages to convince you he has no active involvement in what "happens" to him. The cycle of violence just spins around him, he's not the one propelling it forward.
Except he is. He doesn't run from violence, he chases it time and time again. He puts himself in the same situation every single time, not because he doesn't know any better or it's out of his hands but because he wants to be there; because when it comes to comparing the huge cost to himself with the sheer guilty pleasure he gets from being the Bloody Nine, he unerringly picks the latter, always, I love him so fucking much.

rule number of reading epic fantasy: don’t trust the author’s word when he describes a main character as ugly.

On second thought, things would be worse.
Reading the series for the first time (just finished LAOK!) and this is the bulk of what I've learned, I think. That and Bayaz is a slimy, miserable little man.
Give Malacus Quai the gun, I think.

Logen: You have to pretend to be stronger than you are in order to deal with assholes. Jezal: Is that what you do? Logen: Oh no, my strength is no illusion. I'll fucking destroy you.

The problem with reading 'some' books is that the fandoms are different than what I'm used to. For example, I'm reading the First Law series by Joe Abercrombie and currently am on the third book. And now I wamt some tragic/drama/angst platonic or gay fics about Logen or Bloody Nine and Bethod.
Not sure what the line is in English but in my language it's about how you can't truly hate a person if you didn't love them before and there will always be some love left over. Logan was also happy to hear Bethod, even for a second and he still considers him his best friend.
I don't care if it's platonic, give me Bethod being the only one allowed to touch Bloody Nine. Give me their toxic, hurtful friendship/partnership. Give me Bethod's pain when Logen betrayed him.
The only reason Bethod even has a bad name and enemies is because Bloody 9(or Logen) wanted to fight and spill blood and he did in Bethod name, so he got a lot of the glory.
But there aren't any fics... I am left to my imagination.

Logen Ninefingers is such a masterful spin on show, don't tell, I mean, god damn. Because from his very first appearance he TELLS you that he's a monstrous killer with a trail of bodies behind him and even his comrades live in terror of him and there's an extremely good reason why he doesn't have any friends and ends up chased away from the North like a rabid dog. But what the narration SHOWS is an introspective, self-reflective, downright affable guy who doesn't mean any harm and abhors violence and I mean, it's such a war-torn setting, amirite, who can afford being a pacifist, it's not like he enjoys the Bloody Nine and he only kills antagonists and demons from hell when in that state anyway, can we really be sure this golden retriever isn't just overly hard on himself?
And then the show catches up with the tell and oh my fucking god.
I mean... he did tell you.

Logen: Honestly, you're doing a lot better than I expected.
Jezal: It feels like all I managed to do is… not die.
Logen: And believe me, that is a remarkably rare skill.

Imagining the life that Ferro and Logen could have had together.
What would have happened if Ferro did know the word for sorry in the common tongue? Would her elbow-in-the-face been such a death sentence to their relationship? Or would it have naturally fallen apart along with their futile quest?
Would their relationship been long and full of warm and cherished memories? Probably not.
Do they deserve better than the revenge that they thought they needed, and where they ended up because of that? Absolutely yes.
I don't know, I'm wine drunk and upset for fictional characters again.

“Like I said, there were five. So you got ten thumbs in there. That satisfy you?” The officer looked more sick than satisfied, but he nodded, lips squeezed together, and held the bag back out to him at arm’s length. Logen shook his head. “Keep it. It’s a finger I’m missing. I got all the thumbs I need.”
This has no right to be this funny. Was Logen even intending to be funny? It just comes so natural.
