He lived in the region of Thy, where I was also born, from the 1930s onward. His studio overlooked a local lake in what is now the first Danish National Park.

Der Nationalpark Oulanka ist ein Nationalpark in der Taiga von Kuusamo im Nordosten Finnlands. Der Oulanka ist einer der populärsten und meistbesuchten Nationalparks Finnlands. Der Oulankajoki lädt zu mehrtägigen Kanutouren und Raftingtrips ein. Die meisten Interessierten kommen zum Besucherzentrum im Tal des Oulankajoki, viele Wanderer machen ein- oder mehrtägige Wanderungen über den Trail der Bärenrunde.

Der Nationalpark Thy ist Dänemarks ältester Nationalpark. Der Park liegt in der dänischen Region Nordjylland auf der Insel Vendsyssel-Thy. Die größten Dünenheiden im Nationalpark finden sich im Wildreservat Hanstholm, in Vangså und in Ålvand sowie zwischen Stenbjerg und Lodbjerg. Hier sind große Rothirschbestände anzutreffen. Außerdem gibt es hier mehr als 200 größere und kleinere Seen, von denen viele nährstoffarme Klarwasserseen mit Sandgrund sind und entsprechende charakteristische Pflanzenarten aufweisen.

Maja Lisa Engelhardt (b. May 2, 1956) is a Danish artist, known for her work in Danish churches, including one of the very smallest, Lodbjerg Kirke, down the road from where I live.

Engelhardt trained at Det fynske Kunstakademi in the late 1970s and has lived in France since 1981. Her husband, Peter Brandes, bought Asger Jorn’s villa in Colombe, outside Paris, and they live and work there.

Her work is often abstract landscape painting, as in this canvas:

I have written about Estvad in my academic career, esp. about the way he represented black subjects in his prose and in his art. In his prose he tends to be casually racist, whereas in his paintings he seems to relish and respect otherness of any kind. Strange dualities as these abound in Danish culture where the racial other was long a rare sight...

Here are two Estvad canvases - one of his Procession canvases, which you can see at the local Heltborg Museum, and another bird/shaman canvas, entitled Foråret Kommer (Spring is Coming).
