not sure if anyone here shares my exact intersection of interests (genshin and f1 racing) but xiao's silhouette is very F1 Driver Unzipped Racing Suit... so here are some thoughts:
he races for Scuderia Liyue (legacy team)
SL's team principal is Mr Zhongli
SL has been sponsored for years by the local funeral parlour and Shell
Madame Ping is the Scuderia Liyue CTO. She can design car aero in her sleep
Xiao is always screaming on team radio and Ganyu is the only person alive in teyvat who can tolerate getting screamed at for 2 hours every race weekend so she is the head race engineer
SL has not won a single championship in years. They're now being called a backmarker team because recently, when Zhongli took over as team principal, the team has been fucking up their car setup and race strategy so much it's tragicomical.
It's not all Zhongli's fault tho - Xiao is also a very immature driver. The guy will not leave space for other drivers on the track even if everyone knows you always have to leave-a da space!!!
young rookie Xiao used to proudly brag that he had the longest driver contract in the history of Scuderia Liyue (a whopping eternity amount of years!) but now he just looks depressed about it
xiao doesn't suffer from Racing Driver Bigneck because uhhh adeptus powers
Scuderia Liyue is currently searching for their second driver because Xiao accidentally killed their previous one
xiao's racing number is 4 (heh heh, death)
Scuderia Liyue thinks they're rivals with the championship-contending Inazuma Racing Team and their star driver Scaramouche, but recently they're really just rivals with the Mondstadt Team, which consistently place last.
The Mondstadt Team Principal, Venti, is a meme and can be heard saying "need to phone Jean now" in a thick german accent after every race failure
Also side note the Mondstadt drivers are "Most unsportive driver on the grid" Diluc and "Suck My Balls" Kaeya
#this one is entirely just for me#april 2023 i have 2 brain cells one for genshin and one for f1#xiao#adeptus xiao#genshin impact#genshin#xiao fanart#weiwei art#fanart#And Team Sumeru is Mercedes because nerdge#good luck ferrari in baku please get at least 1 point#i know im gonna look back on this in 5 years and be so embarrassed LMAO

The Story of KLogs: What happens when an Mechanical Engineer codes
Since i no longer work at Wearhouse Automation Startup (WAS for short) and havnt for many years i feel as though i should recount the tale of the most bonkers program i ever wrote, but we need to establish some background
WAS has its HQ very far away from the big customer site and i worked as a Field Service Engineer (FSE) on site. so i learned early on that if a problem needed to be solved fast, WE had to do it. we never got many updates on what was coming down the pipeline for us or what issues were being worked on. this made us very independent
As such, we got good at reading the robot logs ourselves. it took too much time to send the logs off to HQ for analysis and get back what the problem was. we can read. now GETTING the logs is another thing.
the early robots we cut our teeth on used 2.4 gHz wifi to communicate with FSE's so dumping the logs was as simple as pushing a button in a little application and it would spit out a txt file
later on our robots were upgraded to use a 2.4 mHz xbee radio to communicate with us. which was FUCKING SLOW. and log dumping became a much more tedious process. you had to connect, go to logging mode, and then the robot would vomit all the logs in the past 2 min OR the entirety of its memory bank (only 2 options) into a terminal window. you would then save the terminal window and open it in a text editor to read them. it could take up to 5 min to dump the entire log file and if you didnt dump fast enough, the ACK messages from the control server would fill up the logs and erase the error as the memory overwrote itself.
this missing logs problem was a Big Deal for software who now weren't getting every log from every error so a NEW method of saving logs was devised: the robot would just vomit the log data in real time over a DIFFERENT radio and we would save it to a KQL server. Thanks Daddy Microsoft.
now whats KQL you may be asking. why, its Microsofts very own SQL clone! its Kusto Query Language. never mind that the system uses a SQL database for daily operations. lets use this proprietary Microsoft thing because they are paying us
so yay, problem solved. we now never miss the logs. so how do we read them if they are split up line by line in a database? why with a query of course!
select * from tbLogs where RobotUID = [64CharLongString] and timestamp > [UnixTimeCode]
if this makes no sense to you, CONGRATULATIONS! you found the problem with this setup. Most FSE's were BAD at SQL which meant they didnt read logs anymore. If you do understand what the query is, CONGRATULATIONS! you see why this is Very Stupid.
You could not search by robot name. each robot had some arbitrarily assigned 64 character long string as an identifier and the timestamps were not set to local time. so you had run a lookup query to find the right name and do some time zone math to figure out what part of the logs to read. oh yeah and you had to download KQL to view them. so now we had both SQL and KQL on our computers
NOBODY in the field like this.
But Daddy Microsoft comes to the rescue
see we didnt JUST get KQL with part of that deal. we got the entire Microsoft cloud suite. and some people (like me) had been automating emails and stuff with Power Automate
This is Microsoft Power Automate. its Microsoft's version of Scratch but it has hooks into everything Microsoft. SharePoint, Teams, Outlook, Excel, it can integrate with all of it. i had been using it to send an email once a day with a list of all the robots in maintenance.
this gave me an idea
and i checked
and Power Automate had hooks for KQL
KLogs is actually short for Kusto Logs
I did not know how to program in Power Automate but damn it anything is better then writing KQL queries. so i got to work. and about 2 months later i had a BEHEMOTH of a Power Automate program. it lagged the webpage and many times when i tried to edit something my changes wouldn't take and i would have to click in very specific ways to ensure none of my variables were getting nuked. i dont think this was the intended purpose of Power Automate but this is what it did
the KLogger would watch a list of Teams chats and when someone typed "klogs" or pasted a copy of an ERROR mesage, it would spring into action.
it extracted the robot name from the message and timestamp from teams
it would lookup the name in the database to find the 64 long string UID and the location that robot was assigned too
it would reply to the message in teams saying it found a robot name and was getting logs
it would run a KQL query for the database and get the control system logs then export then into a CSV
it would save the CSV with the a .xls extension into a folder in ShairPoint (it would make a new folder for each day and location if it didnt have one already)
it would send ANOTHER message in teams with a LINK to the file in SharePoint
it would then enter a loop and scour the robot logs looking for the keyword ESTOP to find the error. (it did this because Kusto was SLOWER then the xbee radio and had up to a 10 min delay on syncing)
if it found the error, it would adjust its start and end timestamps to capture it and export the robot logs book-ended from the event by ~ 1 min. if it didnt, it would use the timestamp from when it was triggered +/- 5 min
it saved THOSE logs to SharePoint the same way as before
it would send ANOTHER message in teams with a link to the files
it would then check if the error was 1 of 3 very specific type of error with the camera. if it was it extracted the base64 jpg image saved in KQL as a byte array, do the math to convert it, and save that as a jpg in SharePoint (and link it of course)
and then it would terminate. and if it encountered an error anywhere in all of this, i had logic where it would spit back an error message in Teams as plaintext explaining what step failed and the program would close gracefully
I deployed it without asking anyone at one of the sites that was struggling. i just pointed it at their chat and turned it on. it had a bit of a rocky start (spammed chat) but man did the FSE's LOVE IT.
about 6 months later software deployed their answer to reading the logs: a webpage that acted as a nice GUI to the KQL database. much better then an CSV file
it still needed you to scroll though a big drop-down of robot names and enter a timestamp, but i noticed something. all that did was just change part of the URL and refresh the webpage
SO I MADE KLOGS 2 AND HAD IT GENERATE THE URL FOR YOU AND REPLY TO YOUR MESSAGE WITH IT. (it also still did the control server and jpg stuff). Theres a non-zero chance that klogs was still in use long after i left that job
now i dont recommend anyone use power automate like this. its clunky and weird. i had to make a variable called "Carrage Return" which was a blank text box that i pressed enter one time in because it was incapable of understanding /n or generating a new line in any capacity OTHER then this (thanks support forum).
im also sure this probably is giving the actual programmer people anxiety. imagine working at a company and then some rando you've never seen but only heard about as "the FSE whos really good at root causing stuff", in a department that does not do any coding, managed to, in their spare time, build and release and entire workflow piggybacking on your work without any oversight, code review, or permission.....and everyone liked it
#comet tales#lazee works#power automate#coding#software engineering#it was so funny whenever i visited HQ because i would go “hi my name is LazeeComet” and they would go “OH i've heard SO much about you”

tuesday again 11/5/2024
i am going to do my absolute fucking best to stay off the internet today. also the next time i write one of these i will be goddamn thirty. yeesh.
listening
it took three hours to make a normally brisk 50-minute trip back from the airport on sunday bc there were simply so many accidents. my phone wasn't charging, i was kind of locked into the one way i actually knew how to get home, it was pouring, and the only radio station that was reliably coming through was the local dad rock station.
youtube
i don't think i've ever actually heard this song all the way through before! i have of course heard the chorus in eight billion advertisements and trailers etc, but i tuned in right at the lyrics
I was a willow last night in my dream I bent down over a clear running stream Sang you the song that I heard up above And you kept me alive with your sweet flowing love
big ren faire lady of shallott vibes.

reading
witch hat atelier, the first twelve volumes that are out in english anyway. let's yoink the setup from the fan wiki.
Coco, a girl living in a small village, had been dreaming of becoming a magician since little. But people who don't know how to use magic since birth are unable to become magicians, or witness the moment magic occurs. But one day, Coco accidentally saw Qifrey, a magician that was visiting the village casting a spell. Ecstatic to finally know how magic works, she tries it immediately and transforms her mother into a stone statue. With the help of Qifrey and his disciples, Coco will embark in a magical journey to save her mother.
this gets a lot of ghibli comparisons, and i get it-- there's a lot of concern about healing scars from a near-cataclysmic magical war, lots of contraptions, bucolic countryside, loving shots of food, etc. i think there is a focus on academia and cohort-building, and how networking is a profession all to itself, that we do not generally see in ghibli films. i think the comp pull should go beyond the aesthetics, as well, but ghibli is still a good comp-- the world of witch hat atelier is dangerous and can hurt or kill you, but it treats the reader's heart with the same care a ghibli movie will. things may not be happily ever after or go perfectly at all times, but there are no twists for the sake of twists, and it doesn't sneer or make fun of you for caring about a character. there are no whedonesque "well THAT happened!" moments. these characters are going to learn and grow and you will learn and grow along with them goddamnit. it is queer but incidentally queer. the folx side of the fags-folx spectrum will feel very welcome here but this is not a tenderqueer kind of gay book. characters are incidentally gay because of course they are, that's just how the world works, look at all the fullness of human expression you can encounter in your one short life, why NOT be gay
i did not expect this series to kickstart a fresh wave of grief for my own academic experience. coco leans on her cohort so much and they truly do work together to solve problems and come up with good solutions and i wish i had had that kind of astronomy experience. it's kind of cold comfort that i don't know and have never heard of a woman having a good astronomy experience.
witch hat atelier: very fun to sink into the details on a page (Kamome Shirahama knows how functional but pretty clothes work), endlessly charming veneer on a very taut game of political ethics happening in the grownups' background

happy noirvember!!!
youtube
Another Man's Poison (1952, dir. Rapper) courtesy of Kanopy's little revolving carousel of new noir films.
An English mystery writer (Bette Davis) kills her husband, then tries to kill a man (Gary Merrill) posing as her husband.
In his review in New Statesman and Nation, Frank Hauser wrote "No one has ever accused Bette Davis of failing to rise to a good script; what this film shows is how far she can go to meet a bad one."
a plot that could only happen in a country where appearances are everything. i must agree with mr hauser and most of the critics of the time who said Huh???? to the script and basic premise. AND the ending is a little too pat. a breakneck ninety minutes filmed in three months where its stage play bones show. however i really like Bette Davis and it's so much fun to watch Bette Davis pace around an English manor house like a caged tiger.

deep cleaned my entire house. drove three hundred miles this weekend to pick up my sister and her friend from the airport, go to the ren faire, come back from the ren faire, and take them back to the airport. houston delivered to me some of the worst fucking driving experiences i have ever had here. really upsetting torrential downpour for nearly an hour on a road with no shoulder to speak of.
the actual ren faire was fun! i did not realize how vital a chair or bench with a fucking back was to my rest and recovery. it was nice to go with fellow adults and not help wrangle several small children, as fun as a kid-friendly experience can be. got my overpriced gyro for the year. got my bootleg anime merch for the year. wish it hadn't rained but i feel very smug for packing enough umbrellas and ponchos.

HOW DOES SPEED AND GRAVITY AFFECT TIME??
Blog#328
Saturday, September 2nd, 2023
Welcome back,
The International Space Station will host the most precise clocks ever to leave Earth. Accurate to a second in 300 million years, the clocks will push the measurement of time to test the limits of the theory of relativity and our understanding of gravity.
Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity predicted that gravity and speed influences time; the faster you travel the more time slows down, but also the more gravity pulling on you the more time slows down.
On May 29, 1919, Einstein’s theory was first put to the test when Arthur Eddington observed light “bending” around the sun during a solar eclipse. Forty years later, the Pound-Rebka experiment first measured the redshift effect induced by gravity in a laboratory – but a century later scientists are still searching for the limits of the theory.
Luigi Cacciapuoti, ESA’s Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space (ACES) project scientist, explained:
The theory of relativity describes our universe on the large scale, but on the border with the infinitesimally small scale the theory does not jibe and it remains inconsistent with quantum mechanics. Today’s attempts at unifying general relativity and quantum mechanics predict violations of Einstein’s equivalence principle.
Einstein’s principle details how gravity interferes with time and space. One of its most interesting manifestations is time dilation due to gravity. This effect has been proven by comparing clocks at different altitudes such as on mountains, in valleys and in space. Clocks at higher altitudes show time passes faster with respect to a clock on the Earth’s surface, as there is less gravity from Earth the farther you are from our planet.
Flying at a 250 mile (400 km) altitude on the Space Station, the Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space will make more precise measurements than ever before.
ACES will create an “internet of clocks”, connecting the most accurate atomic timepieces the world over and compare their timekeeping with the ones on humankind’s weightless laboratory as it flies overhead.
Comparing time down to a stability of hundreds femtoseconds – one millionth of a billionth of a second – requires techniques that push the limits of current technology. ACES has two ways for the clocks to transmit their data, a microwave link and an optical link. Both connections exchange two-way timing signals between the ground stations and the space terminal, when the timing signal heads upwards to the Space Station and when it returns down to Earth.
The unprecedented accuracy this setup offers brings some nice bonuses to the ACES experiment. Clocks on the ground will be compared among themselves providing local measurements of geopotential differences, helping scientists to study our planet and its gravity.
The frequencies of the laser and microwave links will help understand how light and radio waves propagate through the troposphere and ionosphere, thus providing information on climate. Finally, the internet of clocks will allow scientists to distribute time and to synchronize their clocks worldwide for large-scale Earth-based experiments and for other applications that require precise timing.

What are your thoughts on the Coase theorem?
Hold on...
Coase developed his theorem when considering the regulation of radio frequencies. Competing radio stations could use the same frequencies and would therefore interfere with each other's broadcasts. The problem faced by regulators was how to eliminate interference and allocate frequencies to radio stations efficiently. What Coase proposed in 1959[2] was that as long as property rights in these frequencies were well defined, it ultimately did not matter if adjacent radio stations interfered with each other by broadcasting in the same frequency band. Furthermore, it did not matter to whom the property rights were granted. His reasoning was that the station able to reap the higher economic gain from broadcasting would have an incentive to pay the other station not to interfere. In the absence of transaction costs, both stations would strike a mutually advantageous deal. It would not matter which station had the initial right to broadcast; eventually, the right to broadcast would end up with the party that was able to put it to the most highly valued use. Of course, the parties themselves would care who was granted the rights initially because this allocation would impact their wealth, but the result of who broadcasts would not change because the parties would trade to the outcome that was overall most efficient. This counterintuitive insight—that the initial imposition of legal entitlement is irrelevant because the parties will eventually reach the same result—is Coase's invariance thesis.
OK, sure, assuming that the wealth from the initial allocation of property rights does not alter subsequent performance, then if Radio Broadcaster A does a regular performance worth $100,000, and Radio Broadcaster B does a regular performance worth $10,000, then we would expect Radio Broadcaster A to just buy the rights from Radio Broadcaster B, assuming that B is willing to sell.
But-
Coase's main point, clarified in his article 'The Problem of Social Cost[1],' published in 1960 and cited when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1991, was that transaction costs, however, could not be neglected, and therefore, the initial allocation of property rights often mattered.
Ok, yeah.
Transaction costs are everywhere, and initial wealth allocations may have significant effects on production efficiency (e.g. from economies of scale, or a firm's ability to hire talent) resulting in path dependence. At the same time, a lot of economics is about rates (such as the rate at which a house breaks down), so we can still expect a flow of property rights depending on thresholds.
I would say that transaction costs are not uniform.
We should expect a "Coasean correction" to be more likely when transaction costs are a small percentage of the transaction, and less likely when transaction costs are a large percentage of the transaction.
Let's setup another scenario.
There is a town where the shipping cost of importing cheese is $1/lb. The outside market price for cheese is $2/lb. As such, imported cheese costs a total of $3/lb. The city offers a monopoly on local cheese-making to 3 firms: { A: $10 -> 1 lb, B: $2.50 -> 1 lb, C: $2.19 -> 1 lb }.
Firm A is much more likely to sell off the cheesemaking rights than either firm B or firm C, because it can't sell at the local market price ($3/lb). Because the difference in profit margins between B and C is smaller, the movement from B to C is more likely to be subject to other considerations rather than just cheesemaking efficiency, such as capital costs, verification costs, profits or risks compared to other industries, and so on.
We could imagine, for example, that the town has a tiny market where only 12 lbs of cheese is sold annually, so the difference is only $3.72. Would it take longer than 15 minutes to decide to enter the market? Alternatively, we could imagine that cheesemaking is a very capital-intensive industry, so it's not worth firm C building an entire second factory to compete after firm B builds the first one.
Another, more refined, normative conclusion also often discussed in law and economics is that government should create institutions that minimize transaction costs, so as to allow misallocations of resources to be corrected as cheaply as possible.
Government can increase production by reducing friction, certainly. Acting as an external (and more neutral) enforcer for property rights is actually one of the chief ways that they do so.
Overall, I would say that this argument feels more like it's meant to be deployed against people who argue that "we shouldn't establish property rights to the radio spectrum," because "the initial allocation is too difficult to determine and won't be perfect."
In his later writings, Coase himself expressed frustration that his theorem was often misunderstood. Some mistakenly understood the theorem to mean that markets would always achieve efficient results when transaction costs were low, when in reality his point was almost the exact opposite: because transaction costs are never zero, it cannot be assumed that any institutional arrangement will necessarily be efficient. Others have argued that because transaction costs are never zero it is always appropriate for a government to intervene and regulate, though Coase believed that economists and politicians "tended to over-estimate the advantages which come from governmental regulation."[9] What Coase actually argued is, that it is important to always compare alternative institutional arrangements to see which would come closest to "the unattainable ideal of the world of zero transaction costs."[10]
Uh-huh. "Guys, please stop flattening my theory."

From #Shinkane to #ShizuAka
This is a long post about my journey from shipping Shinkane (for a long time) but decided to move on to ShizuAka.
Yes, we all know Shinya Kogami and Akane Tsunemori do have special bond. Like mental connection with each other. Soulmates as we call it. Connected by the Red String of Fate (as we call in Japanese).
And most of the characters from PP-verse validates and knows this. Such as Masaoka and his son Ginoza for example. But there are quite a lot of evidence that made us all flap our ears whenever our favorite pair Shinya x Akane is concerned.
Some instances are:
PP Season 1:
Everyone says that it's Kou's infamous scream "Akaneee!" that proves Shinkane exists. But I do believe it was when Masaoka and Kogami shared a drink the night he left the PSB that proves Shinkane almost exist (watch EP. 18 again and know for yourself what do I mean!)
Kogami's letter. That's it. We all know it. The fact that he wrote a hand written note for her, not for Shion, not for Ginoza, not even to his mom! We all know that he value her so much.
Okay, alright... that infamous scream when he shouted for his name!
When he smiled when Akane and her team went on to Makishima's location ahead after learning of Kou's plan (thanks to Akane). He gleamed with pride.
When he didn't immediately run to catch Makishima, but instead carry Akane (bridal style) into safety when they were in a corn field. Or Oat field, I forgot. It shows how much he cared for her.
At this point I think everyone pretty much confirmed they shared a special bond.
PP - The Movie (1st)
When Kou first save her from explosion by shielding with his sexy abs 🤭
When Kou suggested her to stay with him for the night when there's clearly more room with the female locals in the Angkor Wat.
Their silent "I-know-you-care-know-I-care" treatment when Akane has to leave upto the point they were captured by Wong.
Kou wasn't surprised when Akane handed him a cigarette like he expects her to have them.
Don't forget to mention about Wong capturing them two together and plan to frame them just them. Only them. Because he sees them as threat. As if they were an item 🙄
PP - SS3
He's mad when Frederica stayed for the night and he don't know why 🤣.
He's proud of Akane's accomplishment after hearing Frede talks about the success of Div 1 as a team.
His regrets for exacting revenge and hesitations to have Tenzing follow his path mirrors Akane's ideals.
His mention of "He still have things to protect in Japan" (pay attention on that one) because in;
PP - Providence
He tries his best to reconnect with Akane but a case gets in their way.
His willingness to throw himself between her legs just to save her from an explosion almost a mile away from them compare to PP movie explosion.
His classic line "I'll follow you, even if you told me not to".
His protective nature all throughout the movie upto Akane's downfall.
His teary eyes while reading Akane's letter.
His promise to take her out of that place.
That Psycho Pass Recap during PPP promotionals which showcases the Shinkane viewpoint.
PP - S3 & FI
He don't have to pay Akane a visit nor to pick her up from jail because she's no longer his inspector! But he did anyway.
He keeps on saying he trust her and believes in her.
He didn't hurt Arata because he knows he is Akane's ward. Yes it is included.
The Merch
Yes am talking about the #KoAka keychain.
The PPP movie poster where Kou and Akane's faces are in the big picture and the rest are inside their heads!
The fan service stuff and clickbaits for all #Shinkane or #Koaka junkies!
The unforgivable hints of any romantic subplots from radio drama, merch, narrative etc.
My point is, all of them are just a setup to garner more viewership because they know Shinkane fandom is a big bunch!
But in the end, they want to tear us down by breaking our hearts with platonic inclinations between Kou and Akane 😭
The Segue:
Yes they created a segue under the guise of Frederica Hanashiro and Shizuka Homura.
We all know that PsychoPass Producers wanted to go down the path of Shonen Jump-esque plot. Which is why they seen #Shinkane fanbase as a threat. Although they don't want to shun the viewership influence of it.
That's why they create this "icings" (Shinkane sweet moment) as we call it to clickbait us! 😭😞
The Lure:
That's why in PPP Sinners of the System 3 and PPP they wanted to showcase Kogami x Frederica (the KouxFrede touching hand scene), the "Hey Akane don't blame Frederica for Saiga's death", to teach us that Kou is shippable with Frederica (a hot blonde).
Why Shinkane is a strong fan fave?
Because Akane is relatable character.
Because Kogami is a hot mess.
Akane a plain looking girl able to get the impression of Kogami a good-looking bad boy and former ace detective.
We all can easily identify with Akane. Us ordinary girls with strong principles are dreaming of a hot dude like Kogami who has ex-militia skills to swoon us over.
How the writers are tearing the #Shinkane/#KoAka fanbase:
Akane did ask (or even beg) Kogami to come back to Japan (from Season 1 especially the Psycho Pass Gekijōban, but he express no desire.
Only when Frederica, a tall-blonde-gorgeous looking half-brit half-japanese woman was able to bring him back.
They have a flirtateous moment in Sinners of the System part 3 novel during their night conversation.
The Kou x Frede indirect kiss through the bottle Scene.
Kou always standing beside Frederica.
Kou still choose to work in SAD with Frederica eventhough he has a chance to go back to PSB in PPP.
Kou's been treating Akane like trash eversince he gets back:
(1) During his famous balcony call when Akane hangs up. He didn't say sorry but instead let his pride dominate him.
(2) He only visited Akane in Season 3 after 2 years (when he rest his back at the door simply because he felt awkward bending to look at the window of Akane's height.
(3) He only picks her up out of guilt after he reads her hand-written letter.
(4) It was Shizuka Homura who negotiated Akane out of jail not Kogami.
(5) Kogami didn't comforted Akane. Only Ginoza did.
(6) Kogami had the chance to go back for Akane but he didn't. He chose to stay with Frede in S.A.D.
(7) Shinkane is one-sided. Only Akane likes him. But Ko?? No. The novels confirm that.
The Future of Shinkane:
From this point forward we can't expect anything much from this ship. Although as fans, we will keep them into our hearts and be as free as clouds to do more fanfictions out of these two characters because we've been rooting them since day 1.
But I think the writers want to us to move on with Kogami x Frederica and Shizuka x Akane.
With that, eventhough I still ship KoAka/Shinkane, I keep the possibilities open should the writers want to push them to other characters.
My Dime:
At this point I truly wish Akane would die in Kogami's arms and he finally realize he too has feelings for her but it's too late (as Saiga foretold), and he gets back to PSB mentoring new characters. Applying both his ideals to never overlook injustice plus also applying Akane's principles to uphold what is right by being just and fair.

THE WIP LIST IS BACK!! Tell me more about Broadcasting Live From Daybreak Town? That sounds like it's probably an entertaining one, haha.
(For this)
YEAH!! WIP LIST!!
Would you believe me if I said it’s angst? lol
So, I love taking a pieces of the Daybreak Town backgrounds and just making a whole fics about them. I’ve done it with the Marketplace, I’m gonna do it with the Moogle Shop, and this one is specifically about the radios.
The original idea was a radio broadcast from a local station (run by an unhappy conspiracy driven Dandelion) right when the glitches started to get bad. It’s kind of evolved into a Brain and Ven centric fic where Brain has to not only deal with his own anxieties, but also needs to help Ven process that some people are just determined to blame them for things that aren’t their fault because of their position (something I discovered while writing this post… thank you for helping me figure that out, you’re gonna solve my whole block for this fic lol).
Snippet under the cut
Disclaimer: This is a WIP. All things are subject to change
“As our home gets overrun by flashing colours and ghosts from a time passed, the Union Leaders remain ever silent. I’m sure the question of whether or not they know what exactly is going on has crossed each of our minds at some point over the course of this strange day. And the Union Leaders seem uninterested in our pursuit of answers, keeping themselves locked up in the Clocktower, turning everyone who approaches them away for something of supposedly higher importance. Could they be trying to fix this problem, or could it be that they are the ones causing it.” Brain stopped typing. His teeth ground against each other. “Their refusal to give us an-”
“Ven, turn the radio off,” he barked, not watching his tone.
I have more important things to focus on. I can’t let myself be distracted by conspiracies on the radio.
“The Union Leaders have…” There was a moment of hesitation before Ven placed his finger on the button. Suddenly the radio’s volume peaked. “abandoned, abandoned, abandoned, abandoned-” the word repeated, each delivery the same as the last, but slightly distorted, wrong.
Ven jumped backwards and nearly out of his skin, hands swiftly covering his ears. The younger wielder shot Brain a wide eyed look just as the whole broadcast drowned in static.
They both knew what had happened, but that didn’t make the event any less startling. The host and their crew must have been caught in a glitch.
Brain winced at the thought, his mind flashing back to the moment a glitch had appeared over his hand.
At first it had just fallen asleep. Then the pins and needles gradually sharpened, digging deeper and deeper, pressing harder and harder, until…
The static from the radio died down and he was free to hear the startled and disgruntled noises of the announcer and the crew as they reoriented themselves. Then, “I can’t feel anything! I can’t feel-”
The sensation in his hand still hadn’t returned.
“Ven!”
“Sorry,” almost immediately this time, the younger wielder pressed the button. The room fell almost entirely quiet.
Brain welcomed the less distressing sounds of the Clocktower. The familiar repetitive clunking and clicking of the gears turning below him. The rhythmic knocking of Ven’s feet hitting the table’s leg. The faint buzzing of the screens…
Or maybe that was from the portal.
At the reminder, his attention drifted over to the portal. It flickered and swayed, looking unstable as ever.
He made his way over to one of the smaller computer setups, and, with a few swift clacks of the keys, he’d typed in the command ‘Portal Status’. Enter.
Almost hesitantly, his eyes shifted to the display.
<Stable>Good. He let out the breath he didn’t know he was holding. It had to stay that way. Otherwise Ephemer and his friend wouldn't have a way back, and that’d be creating a whole new problem he wasn’t sure they’d have time to fix.
#appearently just talking about this one made me finally figure out what it’s going to be???#like it’s just kinda been whatever I’m feeling when I’m writing#then I slowed down a bunch because I felt like it didn’t have a proper focus#now it has that so thank you#(that also means I don’t have much of the Brain and Ven interactions done yet… at least not stuff I’m gonna go back and readjust#so that’s why I didn’t include it in the snippet)#kh#khux#sometimes i think about my khux fics

you SHOULD start a radio station even though those are crazy mad expensive and might doxx you (not sure). you could start a blog where people can submit their stories and you also share your own? You run the risk of being sent fake stories being marked as real, though. would be sick asf but not if im just reading kid's reddit nosleep fic. anyway uhhh drop the link to those talk stations you mentioned (if you can)?
Oh, fuck if I know. They're not international stations so don't reckon you'd be able to find them--they're just small local stations run outta some bloke's garage with a cheap (and illegal) LPFM radio setup off eBay.
Rarely I get them on CB when driving past some small town. But I really just use my CB for signalling truckies I'm gonna pass on his right cuz they're a lot bigger than I am 😅 And the CB ones require a CB to interact with them. Though there was one time I spent an evening chatting with a truckie and worked him through replacing his starter relay because it blew when he tried starting his truck. That was fun. We sat pissing in the wind until he got her up and going and then it was a goodbye and I went back to my beer and skinning
I wouldn't mind starting an LPFM... but money... It'd have to be an illegal one and that's so much work and hassle... Not worth it the fines lol

The first thing I've ever built using vacuum tubes? Worked first try.
Here it is! I posted earlier about the build, and the 45 volt battery, so I'll just add some setup notes. I'm using a "short" wire antenna, at roughly 18 feet long, strung out from here across the living room. The earth ground is to the old plumbing system; the water comes to the taps via modern PVC pipes, but since this apartment building was constructed some time in the 1960s, there's still a stump of copper pipe under the kitchen sink. The headphones were a long ago thrift store find, magnetic high-impedance 'phones with pin connectors; I have no proof of their age, but I've got a big radio equipment catalog from 1956 that shows very similar ones, down to the cloth-covered headband and wires.
Tuning isn't quite as straightforward as it is on a modern radio. The regenerative circuit used here, which dates back to 1912 (!), requires you to tune the capacitor (left) to the station frequency, and then you need to use the regeneration feedback (right) to dial in just the right amount to pull the audio out. That said, it's much better and cleaner reception than the crystal radios I've built; on those, one strong local station would tend to swamp everything else, and the regeneration here is meant to filter that sort of thing out. I had it running for a couple of minutes, just poking around, and positively identified three separate local AM stations. Come nightfall, we DX hunt!

There is just something so ethereally magical and special about early mornings alone
I'm driving through the dark along abandoned small town suburban main road, past darkened strip malls and empty traffic light intersections. I've had a nice upper body workout, a relaxing massage chair + Calm meditation session, I'm sipping my boba milk tea protein drink...a hot shower and comfy baggy clothes for the drive home... I'm winding down the roads, no cars on the road except for lone travelers and 3rd shifts heading home...passing a family of deer near the local horse farm. I slow down, roll down my window and greet them. I'm energized, but relaxed. Lo-fi hip hop chill beats play on my Spotify playlist, via a Bluetooth radio setup connected to my phone, the sunrise is still hiding beyond the horizon. I'm high, free, relaxed, accomplished.
I arrive in my room, greeted ecstatically by Zero who was burrowed under the blankets on my bed as usual. It's not freezing cold out anymore, so a little sweater on Zero and a light jacket is enough for us to go for a short walk around the neighborhood. I'd forgotten how much I missed morning walks before work with him, even though he comes to work with me every day now.
When we get back home, I make a warm cup of tea, get changed and dressed for work, do my hair and makeup, and then get back into bed to snuggle with Zero under the covers for a power nap.
When we get up, I feel well rested and ready for the day. Zero hops into the car and looks proudly from his perch between the driver and passenger seat as we head in to work. I arrive on time, I log in, check the emails and reports to catch up, and then make us our breakfasts. It's warm with a little space heater under my desk and a puppy dog in my lap, and just some paperwork to do this morning on the computer. If this job paid me 8$ per hour more, I would probably be content. I could probably give up my dream of law school and a masters degree, and focus all my energy on doing things I like and having fun and just living... At least I have all this free time at work and a healthy work-life balance. I can survive off the bare minimum if I have to, for a little while.

Oregon Judge Tells Family to Kidnap Grandpa
How can a Clackamas County judge decide where an American citizen lives?
Meet 87-year old Dr. Maynard Orme.
Dr. Orme is a well-known character in Portland, Oregon. He was CEO of Oregon Public Broadcasting for over 20 years and was prominent in public television in California before that.
He is a civic leader, was on the board of NPR and PBS, was president of Portland Rotary, and served many causes from jazz radio to historic preservation of railways.
In the 1980’s he produced the documentary “Day After Trinity” about Robert Oppenheimer which was nominated for an Academy Award. At the award ceremony, he wore his High School prom tuxedo with a pale blue ruffled shirt. He is smart, witty, highly regarded and the proud father of two daughters.
If you met him you would love him.
But being 87 years old has its drawbacks and he needs help with managing his finances and, for sure, managing his blood-sugar levels.
Last summer, his two daughters who live a thousand miles from their dad, were concerned about the decline in his health despite his being looked after by an old friend who took on the role of live-in paid caretaker a few years ago. After one too many trips to the ER, the family had enough. One family member, a retired doctor, said, “His lack of care is life-threatening. I think this may be the last time I see Maynard alive”.
The daughters consulted with an Oregon trust attorney to setup his daughters as guardians and Dr. Orme’s caretaker hired a probate elder attorney who insisted on a Guardian/Conservator who would protect his health and his finances.
“We thought we were asking for help and it totally backfired”.
The first recommendation for Conservator turned out to be the woman whose practice was the inspiration for the movie, “I Care A Lot,” that dramatized her career of abuse and corruption in Clackamas County. This should have been a warning. The second suggestion was removed from involvement by the presiding judge for breach of fiduciary duty for offering financial inducement to the paid caretaker, likely in exchange for signing up with him.
The third recommendation turned out to be no better and the judge named her to also serve as the Conservator to work with the newly hired lawyer.
Let’s check on how they are doing.
In the months since the probate court appointed “professional fiduciaries”, Dr. Orme has been saddled with an estimate of $500,000 of expenses and fees. The details of his private Living Trust have been made public, a huge part of his valuable personal collections has gone missing and local police have been told not to investigate. Dr. Orme and his family’s complaints have been deliberately ignored, monthly bills have not been paid, his 401K and bank accounts have been liquidated, his mortgages are in default, his real estate has been claimed by the Conservator, his chosen Trustees have been barred from attending to their duties and responsibilities. Friends and family have been denied contact, Dr. Orme was not allowed to spend the holidays with family, and is only allowed to leave his residential unit with the paid caretaker. Dr. Orme suffered depression, his health declined, and he was neglected.
This is a truly an astonishing catalog of abuse and incompetence that is hard to read and even harder to believe. All of this has been reported by the family to law enforcement, the FBI, and the Adult Protective Services departments in both Oregon and California.
Old but independent, to sick and broke in six months. A new world record.
In every imaginable aspect of his life, Dr. Orme was made substantially worse off than before. The private “probate professionals” are billing Dr. Orme thousands of dollars every month whilst neglecting all of their fiduciary duties and neglecting his health.
All this collusion of those paid to protect Dr. Orme took place while the presiding judge of Clackamas County oversees Dr. Orme’s probate case.
“This is judicially enforced exploitation. A Clackamas County probate racket.”
A few months ago, Colin Evans and Michael Kern, two long-time friends of Dr. Orme heard about some of this and arranged to have lunch with him. When they heard from their friend that he was not allowed to visit his daughters and grandkids over Christmas, they supported his wish to leave town and travel to stay with his family in Pacific Palisades, California. He is now safe, happy and with his family, but penniless; prevented from even accessing his Oregon home or his resources from a lifetime of work, he now depends on his family and friends for his care and wellbeing.
Despite all this depredation, his health and mental faculties have recovered tremendously with help from doctors, family and caregivers. He remains ever cheerful and states repeatedly to everyone including the judge, that he wishes to stay in Pacific Palisades. He has further indicated that he is afraid to return to Oregon, into the hands of paid caretakers and professionals who have medically neglected and exploited him, and whom he certainly no longer trusts.
One old friend who talked to him after his move to Pacific Palisades said, “I was worried he was failing before. He was foggy but I just talked to him and now he’s BACK”.
Shameful Probate Horror Story Continues.
Subsequent to his move to Pacific Palisades and despite his repeated statements that he is happy and healthy there, the professionals in Oregon in charge of his wellbeing have engaged in pervasive bullying and harassment in order to force his return to Clackamas County into their clutches. They downplay their bullying, asserting they have a higher status and authority than the family to decide Dr. Orme’s fate.
His friends and family have been visited by LAPD and Protective Services departments multiple times in Pacific Palisades; the FBI even showed up with accusations that he had been kidnapped and held against his will and without his medications. All of these people found Dr. Orme in great spirits and in great health, with all his required medications, and being looked after with regular visits from two caregivers. They all reported that he is happy and surrounded by joy, grandkids, pets, love, and care.
Dr. Orme vested a great deal of trust in his Oregon caretaker, and he voluntarily agreed to the professional fiduciary and her retained legal counsel. He does not want to believe that they have conspired to manipulate and defraud him. Yet here we are. From his perspective, all the evidence points in that direction.
Despite all this, the Conservator has persuaded the Probate Court judge to issue an order for Dr. Orme to return to Clackamas County and to hold his daughter, Jennifer Erwin, in Contempt of Court with a $18,000 fine and additional $500 per day fine until she returns him to the judge.
Maynard Orme’s only crime is growing old.
Remember … Dr. Orme has no medical opinion declaring him incompetent, there are no court-ordered restrictions on his travel or association, none of his medications have been defined as life-threatening, and he has a well-designed Living Trust for his property that allows him to decide how his assets are used. Yet he is being treated as if none of these were true.
All of us should be terrified by this. We all aspire to be this well organized so that our autumn years are comfortable and stress free; that our children are left with clear instructions.
Step back a second to realize how repugnant this court order is. The Probate Court has no power to arrest or extradite Dr. Orme, so the judge has chosen to solely punish Ms. Erwin until SHE returns him to the Clackamas County Courthouse. It’s a Solomon’s Choice. If Dr Orme is forced to return to Oregon, his will, well-being, and civil rights are sacrificed. His daughter may be subject to criminal charges for abuse, exploitation, and kidnapping. If Dr. Orme remains in California, as he is entitled to do, his daughter is held in Contempt and the court can order fines, attorney fees, compensation for damages, and even confinement to jail.
Indeed this judge has the power to arrest Jennifer Erwin should she come to Oregon and not give up her father into the hands of predatory professionals who see him as nothing more than a revenue stream. This is an impossible choice for Dr. Orme’s daughter that amounts to judicial blackmail and over-reach from the bench and an abuse of the judicial process.
The family is traumatized but saddled up and into the fight.
Rest assured that this is not the end of this story. Dr. Orme is lucky enough to have access to expert legal counsel, and a network of friends ready to help. One of his daughters has made a career of crafting true crime stories for film and television and works tirelessly with the FBI to support anti-human trafficking efforts. They will fight back against a predatory system and pursue any and all appropriate legal recourse.
The judge is up for re-election in May of 2024 and the professionals shall be reported.
But the message for anyone getting older or anyone looking after elder relatives - and that means everyone - is that they should avoid at all costs engaging with professional guardians, conservators, and especially their bullying lawyers in any part of America.
Kristin Booth Glen, a former New York judge who helped craft oversight in that state said, “Keeping people out of guardianship in the first place is the single most important thing to do, because once you’re in it, it’s the toilet you get flushed down.”

Hey Bingo Buddy! I've been devouring your posts about Faith today and I am genuinely SO into what you're doing! Can you share more about her story, pretty please? 👀
💖💖Thank you for the Ask!!💖💖
(Thank you so much! 🥰 - I am also loving your OC banner setup, and the description of Vinnie was fantastic. Radio static, plant names, and elevator music killed me 😂🤣; I was hoping to catch up on Fallout before jumping in (4 has been in my ‘to play’ stack for way too long), but sadly, I don’t think there’s enough Dramamine in the house to get me through… might jump to wikis for world background.)
More on Faith and her Story:
When I began to answer this, I started writing about Faith’s backstory. Coming from a low income household in a decaying town. Striving to escape at all costs to the point of developing deep-seeded neurosis. Anxiety. Burnout. But it didn't feel accurate to the tone of her story. Struggles with coming of age, pressures of getting into college? That's a dime a dozen. Dull. What the fuck are we lingering on that for, she sure as shit isn't. No, how she got to Marsden, Pennsylvania was irrelevant, only that she got there.
In Marsden, she found a place where she felt free. Free from the pressure. Free to express herself. Relax. Find her voice. Only in this new space could she understand that her happiness came from being true to herself and not from a mark on a paper. Success in her studies quickly took a back burner to self discovery.
Suffice to say, her new path did not lead to much financial stability, but it was of no concern to her. Grade school Faith may have followed in line, but post grad Faith couldn’t give two shits. She knew what that life held, and it certainly wasn’t doing fuck all for her wellbeing.
And that life certainly didn't have him.
Along with Paul came a new appreciation for the beauty around her. Nature. Humanity. He found amusement in all aspects of his life, despite the fact that humanity sometimes wanted little to do with his cheeky bullshit. It was infectious. Time with him truly was blissful.
He was a light in her life that was extinguished much too soon.
Many memories have faded into a blur since the night of that phone call, drowned in the burning liquid that provided the only comfort in his absence. And comfort was needed. Between the police pushing his ever growing cold case to the side, the local clubs fostering more problematic suspects than she could count, and the college completely closing off his office to her, anger and loneliness did nothing but build with little outlet.
So she drank the pain away. Smoked a cloud to hide behind. Self preservation went to shit as she sat back and wished for the time to come when she would see him again. Or not see anything at all. Fuck if she knew what came after this, and nothing would certainly be better than existing with the dull ache in her chest that refused to subside.
But she soon found the alcohol didn’t just provide comfort, it provided sight.
She could see him.
Talk to him.
Inebriation distorted the world, but it meant that he was in it once more. Or what was left behind. Even now, she doesn’t pretend to know what comes after all this. She doesn’t pretend, and she doesn’t question. Wouldn’t question. Never. Not if it would risk whatever additional time she was being given right now.
Ghosts were real. He was real. And he was about to get her involved in a plot that any sane person wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole.
Good thing her sense of self preservation had already went to shit.

FLASH REPORT THIS MORNING: Calambanon Radio Announcer 'DJ Johnny Walker' gunned down from an Unnamed Suspect during an Online TeleRadyo Broadcast of Gold FM (updated as final!!!)
(with reports from 106.1mhz's FMR Babe Radio: Dipolog and DWPM-AM's Radyo 630: Manila)
CALAMBA, MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL -- In a shocking and tragic incident that is recently unfolded in the morning on Sunday (November 5th, 2023 – Calamba local time)… Juan Jerrebel Anggoy Jumalon, popularly known as “DJ Johnny Walker”, a 57 y/o part-time hard-hitting local radio announcer and Disc Jockey [born on August 2nd, 1966], morning radio host and on-board provincial station manager of 94.7mhz’s Gold FM: Calamba was shot dead inside on his own home radio booth at Purok 2, Brgy. Don Bernardo A. Neri, Calamba, Misamis Occidental during an exclusive Facebook live video broadcast of his local morning radio program 'Pahapyod sa Kabuntagon’ (Early Morning). This devastating event has sent shockwaves throughout the local Calambanon community and the radio broadcasting industry in Misamis Occidental.
DJ Johnny Walker, a beloved not-so-fictional figure in the local radio scene, was a prominent personality on 94.7 Gold FM: Calamba. His real name “Juan Jerrebel Anggoy Jumalon”, was known to very few as he went by his radio alias, which had become synonymous with the morning airwaves. More than several years or decades of experience in radio broadcasting, Mr. Jumalon had become an integral part of the local community, providing entertainment, information and a sense of connection to his listeners each day.
94.7 Gold FM: Calamba is an affiliated local FM radio station of the Kalayaan Broadcasting System Inc. (KBSi), and DJ Johnny Walker played a pivotal role in its success. His morning radio program, 'Pahapyod sa Kabuntagon’ was not only known for its entertaining content but also for its community engagement, discussing local & regional issues in Misamis Occidental, and bringing the community together through various interactive segments. This made Mr. Jumalon, a cherished figure among his listeners and colleagues.
In 2014, his personal broadcasting setup of the aforesaid local FM radio station within a decade before the male suspect gunned down to Mr. Jumalon during an exclusive televised interview of DXTE-TV 8's TV5: Cagayan de Oro for News 5. In his personal health reasons back then, Mr. Jumalon was part of the Persons with Disabilities (PWD). Several years later aside from murder case, local and regional issues to be followed when discussing land and business all across the Misamis Occidental area as a motive.
Per the exclusive spot report as obtained by 106.1mhz’s Favorite Music Radio: Babe Radio Dipolog and the selected KBP-member stations in Misamis Occidental, in cooperation with DWPM-AM’s Radyo 630: Manila, when the tragic incident took place during the said LIVE Facebook video broadcast of 'Pahapyod sa Kabuntagon’ around 5:35am on that fateful Black Sunday. This was the world's first online horrific, TeleRadyo-like broadcasting history in Southern Mindanao.
Outside the CCTV video as mentioned, another suspect to be illegally trespassed, who were pretending in disguise as a local listener for a potential public service without a security guard on-duty.
Within the final moments develop, the unnamed male suspect who remains at large and carries a firearm of caliber .45 pistol, disrupted the live FM radio program and shot twice to Mr. Jumalon (even in audible transistor radio simulcast in general), leading to his untimely demise by shooting his lower lip towards his back portion head, then stealing a gold jewelry worth PHP150,000 (U$D2,682.45), and quickly fled off the scene shortly after. Overall, two or three suspects have yet to be later identified on national internet TV. The aforesaid live video on the radio station’s Facebook page on 94.7 Gold FM: Calamba, captured the horrifying event as it unfolded, leaving online viewers in shock and disbelief.
As we gather a lot of information and investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, there is an outpouring of support and condolences from the listeners, avid fans, friends and colleagues of Mr. Jumalon on various disclosed social media platforms. The incident has prompted discussions about the safety of media professionals, particularly in the realm of live radio broadcasting and online media.
Local authorities in Misamis Occidental have embarked on a detailed probe, and the motive is suspected to be a work-related situation. He was now confirmed dead on arrivial (DOA) from a physician doctor named Dr. Geopeter L. Manisan at Calamba District Hospital (CDH) in National Highway, the said city.
A hot pursuit operation of the Calamba Municipal Police Station (CMPS) is on its way, in relation to a brutal murder suspect from an unidentified gun man.
The untimely demise of “DJ Johnny Walker” is a profound loss to the local radio industry and the community he served for several years or decades. His legacy as a passionate radio personality who connected with his audience on a personal level will be remembered and cherished on him. He is one of the 199th journalists killed since 1986 until the present, which includes Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Dumaguete City, Mabinay and Negros Oriental, as according to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP).
As the investigation unfolds from the Calamba-Philippine National Police, the community and his fellow broadcasters mourn the loss of a beloved figure and await justice throughout the weekend for this heinous act.
EDITOR's NOTE (as of November 7th, 2023): We edited out for clarification from our previous update, as we all learned from our media friends at Radyo 630: Manila and other KBP-member FM, AM and TV stations in Mindanao to come up with a conclusion.

It sucks to not have things that you used to have, or not be able to find them when you know you do still have them. (This is mostly about books and music because that's mostly what I consume.) I often can get more and more obsessive and desperate when I'm just, like, "Why can't I have this thing that I used to have?"
Sometimes it's not like I even legitimately had it before. Some song I taped off the radio, and now I want a digital copy of it, and it doesn't exist anywhere. Like, where did it go?
The transition to digital has been the worst culprit--I might even still own something on vinyl or cassette, but I don't have a setup that allows me to rip it, and I only listen to stuff digitally these days, so it might as well be gone.
Canadian pop from the 80s is particularly bad for this. A lot of it wasn't, or was barely, released on CD, so vinyl rips may be the only form that exists. I used to go on Soulseek looking for this stuff, and a lot of it I gave up on. And nobody is apparently interested in re-releasing it digitally, as a lot of obscure 80s pop has been; some of this may be due to the "Canadian Content" culture where there was a sort of market for Canadian stuff that could satisfy the CanCon minimum quota for broadcasting requirements, but they didn't get a lot of support after an album or two. So maybe it got a lot of airplay on MuchMusic back in the day, but now, it's nowhere.
Out of print books are the other big thing. Some of these aren't ones I actually had, but I had this habit of picking up random first books in series from new authors, and then just never getting around to reading them for years. And now I've been trying to do that more often, and when I do find one I like, then I look for book two and nope, it's vanished. (Sometimes there's ebook versions, but I have issues with ebooks, particularly if they cost as much as a paperback used to, but you don't even have a physical copy, so screw you, I'm not paying that much.) (And don't quote the Internet Archive to me, I'm still mad at them for pretending to be a library when they're legally not. DNI if you want to argue about that.)
Or, I'm trying to do a reread of Dick Francis in order, and I run across Forfeit, which apparently I'd originally borrowed from someone else (someone I am no longer in contact with, for good and valid reasons) and it's no longer in print, why would it be in print? Except as an $8.99 ebook, screw you, that's too much. (Maybe I can Interlibrary Loan that one, because of course it's not in the local library either, probably because it's Too Old.)
And then recently I decided I wanted to do a reread of the Calvin & Hobbes books, because it's been a minute, and I go to the cramped bookshelf in the corner of the former TV room where most of the comic strip collections and such are, and they're all out of order because it's only the kids that have been reading them for some years now, but I go through them and take out the earlier ones (when the books weren't as wide) and put them in order, and...where's the first one? The one that's just called Calvin and Hobbes? Because it's not there. One of the kids must have it in their room. But I ask them (note: said kids are currently ages 15-24) and they say, "No, we've never even heard of this alleged collection. One that's just called Calvin and Hobbes? Are you sure it really exists?" And I am of course constitutionally incapable of just skipping over that one and rereading the other ones, so the project is on hold until I can find that first volume. Maybe I'll show them a picture of the cover and they'll recognize it. Maybe it will turn up somewhere (searching through horrible messy and scattered papers on one disused desk did turn up Scientific Progress Goes Boink!, for instance), but who has the energy for that kind of search in this messy and cluttered house? That one is at the library, and I put a hold on it; I'm currently "#36 on 4 copies" so probably I could get a copy in less than 7 months!
(I'm now going to proceed to rant in more specifics about the music that I can't find, but I'll put it under a cut. Clearly my hope here is that somehow this post will find its way onto the dashboard of somebody who actually has a copy or knows something about it, but my hope are not high.)
Big International Noise: Love Love Lies (song)
This is one of the ones that's bugging me the most right now. I remember this song from MuchMusic, a cool video of time-lapse night-time driving, and the song is...I dunno, "electrofunk" or something? But it has left absolutely zero imprint on the Internet. Nobody has ever posted anything about this song. No Youtube video, no nothing. Nothing on Bandcamp, nothing on Discogs. It was never a particular favourite or anything, but I liked it. And now I can't hear it outside of my own head. What the hell happened to it?
Mark Korven: Passengers (album)
This is one that I do have on vinyl (though all my vinyl is currently stored at my dad's house and he just moved into a trailer so it may be in boxes still). It was an indie album from Edmonton in 1984, before he got a major-label contract for a couple of albums, but I kind of like it, particularly the ballad "Time Heals Slow". It is my #1 candidate for vinyl ripping if I ever get a vinyl ripping setup (and now that I have both the Go Four 3 albums digitally). The opening track, "Clock On The Wall", is on Youtube, and at some point I may get a video-ripping setup working and get that one, but what about the rest of the album? (These days Korven is doing movie soundtracks, with weird instruments from all over the world; I wonder if even he has a digital copy of this album... Maybe I should email him.)
CANO: Visible (album)
CANO was a Canadian musical collective from the late 70's/early 80's. Their early albums seem to be fairly well available, but this one, their final, seems to have never had a digital release. I've seen it on cassette and vinyl, but see above.
Eye Eye: Just In Time To be Late (album)
Canadian late-new-wave album from like 1987, with two big tracks, "Out On A Limb" and "X-Ray Eyes". Those two songs are available because iTunes has their next album with those two tacked on as bonus tracks, but the original album? Nuh-uh.
The Extras: Extrapolis (album)
More Canadian pop. Their great animated video for "Can't Stand Still" is out there, but the rest of the album has also vanished. (I may have found one other random track on Soulseek but that's it. And you try searching for "Extras" and see what you find. Also sometimes it seems to be "Extropolis" instead of "Extrapolis".)
Christopher Ward: Time Stands Still (album) or Spark of Desire (album)
Christopher Ward was a musician, then a VJ on MuchMusic, then he wrote "Black Velvet" for Alannah Myles and quit to become a songwriter full-time. He did come out with a new album recently ("Same River Twice"), and those other two albums are no great shakes for random AOR pop, but dammit, I used to have them, why don't I still have them?
Shari Ulrich: Long Nights (album) and One Step Ahead (album)
Her song "Every Road" was great, and that album was out there, but these ones I only ever saw on vinyl. Again, random AOR pop, but why don't I have them???
Neo A-4: The Warmer Side of You (album)
More Edmontonians, more late new wave, where did they go?
Mrs. Torrance: I'm The Bird (album)
I taped this from the library about the same time as "So Tough" by Saint Etienne and I get them confused in my mind. They've also vanished, so they're probably also Canadian, even though I know they had a CD release at some point...
Everender: Punching Bag (song) and Pepper (song)
An Ottawa band, apparently, who may never have had an actual album release, though I don't know for sure; I got those two songs off of compilations (or maybe the same compilation?), and I loved their sound, where did they go?
Skymonters: Kings (song) and The Danang (song)
An old vinyl album that my dad had, I taped a couple of songs that I liked; I saw it once on the Internet Archive but you couldn't actually download it, so what's the point???
Eva Everything: The Right Thing (song)
This one had a great video with stop-motion effects (inspired by the techniques used to make Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer"), and I taped it off MuchMusic, but did it ever get an actual release? Is it even on Youtube these days? Why can't I have it?
Mike Whitaker & Rhodri James: Monty Who? (song)
From a compilation tape made up for people from alt.callahans on Usenet back in 1991; there were a few Mike Whitaker tracks on there, but with poor recording quality (very quiet among the tape hiss) which were okay, but I'm willing to give up on. But this one had much better quality, and is a hilarious song about overpowered D&D characters from each class, to the tune of "The Battle Hymn of The Republic", and I always wanted me kids to be able to hear it. Apparently it was one one filk cassette compilation once or something, and that was it. Why????
And so on. You get the idea. I'm running out of steam here. But yeah, this crap low-key bugs the hell out of me.
The irony is, of course, that if I do finally find one of these things, I'll be like, "Cool, well done" and then it'll disappear back into my gigantic music collection and I'll listen to it once every ten years, but I'll feel better for knowing it's there.

The Belgrade Phantom: Yugoslavia’s Ghost 911.
In the 1979, during Yugoslavia’s Socialist Dictatorship, a man by the name of Vladimir Vasiljevic gained notoriety for stealing cars. He earned the nicknames “Vlada Opel” for his love of stealing Opels and “Vlada Kljuc” which roughly translates to “Vlad the key” for his ability to hotwire almost any car.
At one point in his boosting career, Vlad came across a white Porsche 911 Targa owned by Serbian tennis player Ivko Plecevic, a car that was a particularly rare sight in Yugoslavia. Being an almost professional car thief, Vlad was up for the challenge of stealing the 911.
It’s unknown how long he actually had the car days but for about a week to 10 days, Vlad would take out this phantom 911 after 10pm and rip through the city streets. Local police gave him the name of the Belgrade Phantom because he would taunt and tease them in chases until late hours of the night before disappearing. He would call in to local radio stations and tell people where to stand for the best view of his driving “performance.”
The fun and games all ended when police setup a trap using empty busses that Vlad ultimately crashed in to. Even after the crash it wasn’t until 2 days later that police caught him after an anonymous tip was called in. Hardly any images or video exist of this phantom except for his final joyride and crash which ran in the newspaper. I’m 2009 a documentary film was made and many of the stories were recreated.
