Djokovic is known as a performer and a kidder. A playful, open-faced kid who likes to entertain crowds with his spot-on impressions of other players—he imitates Roddick’s pigeon-toed wind-up-toy walk; Lleyton Hewitt’s twitchy, O.C.D.-esque hat and hair adjustments pre-serve; and even does a passable Maria Sharapova, with the little on-the-spot jog-step she does before executing her service toss. But, for now, Djokovic was all business. Or so it seemed, until one of the final shots of his practice session. The ball came wide to his backhand. He took two quick strides, bunted it back, and then suddenly his racquet clattered to the ground and he was dropping fast toward the hard surface of the court. Convinced he’d torn an Achilles tendon, or shredded a knee, I barely stifled a shout of alarm, when suddenly I realized that he was capering for his fans. At the last moment, he landed on his palms and sprang into a brief handstand. He popped back onto his feet, laughed, picked up his racquet, and continued hitting. Someone—obviously a fan of Djokovic’s impersonations—shouted, “Do Roger!” That would be Roger Federer—a player Djokovic so admires that he has, in the past, refused even to attempt an impersonation, as if it would be a kind of sacrilege. Today, he declined once again.
— The New Yorker, "Slice" (August 12, 2008)

Matildas’ shootout win delivers biggest TV audience since Cathy Freeman
The Matildas have delivered another record-breaking night on and off the field with Saturday night’s penalty-shootout win over France becoming the most-viewed TV event in more than two decades.
The broadcast on Seven was viewed by an average audience of 4.23 million Australians, according to figures from ratings agency OzTAM.
The game’s original slot aired to a five-city metro audience of 2.507 million Australians, rising to 3.045 million during the penalty shoot-out, which ran into Seven’s news slot, with a further regional audience of 1.186 million.
The figure is set to swell even further as overnight OzTAM figures do not account for streaming viewers on Seven’s 7Plus app, which will be released later on Sunday.
The viewing figures eclipse any television broadcast of the past two decades, including AFL and NRL grand finals, Ash Barty’s Australian Open win in 2022 (viewed by 4.1 million), Australia’s 2003 Rugby World Cup loss against England, and Lleyton Hewitt’s 2005 Australian Open final loss.
While data was not tracked at the time by OzTAM, Cathy Freeman’s 400-metre final at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 is reported to have attracted 8.8 million television viewers, making it the most-watched Australian sporting event.
The game, played in front of a packed Brisbane crowd, ended in a stalemate after 90 minutes and extra time, going on to break another record, the longest-ever penalty shootout in both women’s and men’s World Cup history with 20 attempts.
Melbourne handed Seven the biggest share of its audience nationally, 984,000 tuning in from Victoria’s capital, narrowly ahead of Sydney on 931,000, while 513,000 watched from Brisbane.
The fanfare around the Matildas reached new highs this week, the AFL and its stadiums agreeing to air Optus Sport live streams in stadiums before and after Saturday’s fixtures, with crowds in stadiums continuing to watch the coverage as the shootout ran into the first quarter of a Melbourne and Carlton clash at the MCG.
The figure eclipses Monday’s round-of-16 game against Denmark, which was viewed by a metro audience of 2.294 million, and was then the biggest television audience of 2023.
Seven has sublicenced 15 games from Optus Sport, the tournament’s official broadcast partner. The record-breaking viewership figures making the deal a steal for Seven, which picked up for less than $5 million, according to a source with knowledge of the deal who was not permitted to speak publicly.
Optus Sport, the official broadcaster of the tournament on Sunday morning said the World Cup has delivered the platform’s biggest ever four-week period.
Clive Dickens, vice president of television, content and product development at Optus, said the result is a credit to the quality of athletes and football at the tournament.
“Three of the FIFA Women’s World Cup matches have jumped into the top five most-streamed games on Optus Sport, out of a total 6000 live matches in our history.

hi :0 opinions on janniks half of the r16 matches tmrw bc personally i am seated for machac draper and i feel like u always have some funny shit to say
ooh okay so:
sinner vs paul: if the jannik of last round plays the tommy of last round, it's gonna be over in three very quick sets. tommy really struggled against diallo, and ever since dropping the first set of his first match jannik has seemed really locked in and maybe even back to ao form. that being said, tommy is one of those players who always raises his level against a top player, so he could make things competitive. I still think this should be an easy win for jannik, but if he dropped a set I wouldn't be too shocked
borges vs medvedev: I honestly thought daniil was gonna struggle against flavio, but he won way more easily than I was expecting. that being said... he got broken so many times. his serve is truly concerning. I still fully expect him to win, but it might be a little topsy turvy
draper vs machac: imo, this is gonna be the men's match of the day. I've been seeing jack as an overwhelming favorite, but I don't think that's accurate. he is woefully inconsistent, and tomas can match his power from the baseline. I really think either of them could win here, and if this goes to five I honestly don't think jack can last physically. if he wants to win, he needs to be aggressive from the start and finish it off as soon as he can
de minaur vs thompson: aussie battle! I keep thinking alex's body is gonna let him down, and every match he's played he's started out shaky and slowly played his way into form, completely demolishing by the end. if I had to predict, I'd say jordan is gonna win the first set but alex is gonna win it in four. I really hope lleyton hewitt is at this match

LMFAO I was half-way through typing 'the camera has not yet shown me Hewitt's coach which is very rude' when.... we zoomed straaaaight in on him
I'd already decided to watch the game before I remembered who was coaching Lleyton in 2001. Because I fucking loved Hewitt - him winning Wimbledon was AMAZING. and we've repeatedly covered my love for early 00s Ferrero. So this is just me reliving being 19/20 and a tennis fangirl
