Taking solace in the fact that Tom pretty much implied that a big reason he was attracted to and drawn to Shiv was the money and power she could offer him. When he believed that Shiv was shutting him out and getting in the way of that, that's when Tom turned on her.
Interestingly enough, Greg can offer Tom neither of these things and yet he's shown far more interest in Greg than anyone else to the point of being obsessive over him, including confessing to Greg that he would betray his wife and marry him if he could.
So far Tom hasn't acted on this despite his and Shiv's estrangement, but if he were to do so, he would likely lose the money and power he is so desperately trying to hold on to. It's not a risk he can take.
As such, his attempt to get back with Shiv could easily be read as purely an attempt to maintain and keep the status quo, even if it does mean denying himself a relationship that he actually desires.

Shiv dealing with the combined grief of her failmarriage and the death of her father by spiraling out and being weird as FUCK towards Tom is so sexy and also relateable. Something about how she got drunk and danced at Kendall's bday but then was very freaked out about everyone staring at her vs playing bitey and looking insane and being totally inappropriate in public, something about how she has repressed every emotion she's ever felt to appear perfect and polished to the point of scheduling her grieving until it starts leaking out of the cracks. The stuff she was saying to Tom about vaginas and models and legs is exactly the same fucked up shit he's been saying to Greg for three seasons. Something about how her nickname this WHOLE TIME has been "Shiv", fucking SHIV like a knife and she can cut a person open in ways her brothers never could. Even Tom sees it-- the way he looks at her at the end of that scene. She's going insane. She's cracking. I'm in love with her.

Okay but here’s the thing, Roman telling Gerri that she doesn’t respect him is just. such transparent bullshit. She was the ONLY one who had enough respect for him in S2&3 to invest in him, commit to helping him, ask him to “stick with me, Roman,” etc. Roman’s honest and true raison d’être is to be needed and the fact that she showed him genuine attention and affirmation and even affection was filling part of that emptiness that was left again and again by Logan, by the siblings, by Caroline, by any “normal” relationship he’s had with anyone else. And she offered him so many warnings and lifelines, especially in S3, and now he’s punishing her for the Ordeal of Being Known by her. There is So Much I can say about that breakup scene, but Gerri saying, “you’re not your father,” is both the worst thing he could possibly hear and also a positive thing about Roman as a character. He’s not Logan and Gerri was shaping him into a different kind of leader. Not better, necessarily, in the context of the overarching [waves hands] corporate capitalism or whatever, but effective and shrewd and less mercurial than his father. “I work for waystar, not Logan Roy” — she SAID it ages ago. The Old Guard has been part of Waystar likely for more than half of the company’s existence and now these kids are grief spiraling and trying to Become their dad and burning it all down and for what? Gerri’s quiet “I am good at my job.” is, at this point, the only thing she knows For Sure in this current situation. She is good at her job. She has survived for ~30 years in this place because she is Good at her Job. Roman has benefitted directly from her Being Good at Her Job and he’s throwing back everything she taught him back in her face. Gerri respected Roman and he knew that, but couldn’t handle being Seen and can’t forgive her for that.

maybe not the nicest thing for me to say but im kinda amazed at how many people are mad about the direction the story is going wrt tomshiv vs tomgreg mainly because I think that that's a false dichotomy to begin with? like I don't think it was ever meant to be a cut-and-dry love triangle because it was never really just about love. It was about control, power dynamics, abusive ones at that. These 3 characters continuously embodying and trying to escape their respective archetypes, trading roles and sabotaging each other.
tom gets constantly pushed around by shiv and as a result fantasizes about making greg his slave. shiv says she'll do anything for love to tom and they both laugh. greg post connor's wedding starts to feel like he doesn't want to be the butt of tom's jokes anymore, now that tom has lost a lot of power and security in the company, and kissing up to him wouldn't benefit greg in a meaningful way. they're all fucked up and the story is just getting crazier; to reduce all of that down to "who does Tom Really love actually and who does he Hate? Who will he End Up with?" completely ignores the messiness, the shifting power dynamics, the simple fact that all these characters are rich, soulless capitalists with very little loyalty to love.
