Queen's set at "Live Aid" is considered by many music historians to be the single greatest live rock performance ever. And when they went offstage, David freaking Bowie said to Freddy, "How am I supposed to follow that?"
I've had to explain that one to people before.
We're closing in on 40 years since the biggest rock concert the world has ever seen and likely will ever see, with all the biggest acts of the time doing their thing on several different continents.
As shows go, you're not going to ever see something of that caliber again.
And the first thing to pop into most folks that I've encountered's heads when you bring up Live Aid is Queen's set.
Nearly 40 years later people still get worked up over how good a <25 min set at the biggest rock concert ever was.
For nearly 40 years people have been consistently getting worked up over how good a <25 min set at the biggest rock concert ever was, so it's not a nostalgia thing.
I trust Wiki to be accurate about this one
On the same day, concerts inspired by the initiative were held in other countries, such as the Soviet Union, Canada, Japan, Yugoslavia, Austria, Australia, and West Germany. It was one of the largest satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time; an estimated audience of 1.9 billion, in 150 nations watched the live broadcast, nearly 40 percent of the world population.
<25 min and Freddie is drenched in sweat because the guy only ever had the one speed, that being full throttle.
Poor Bowie, the only way he stood a chance is if they'd done the hand off to him by playing Under Pressure, and even then he'd have just been there for the slowly fading adrenaline rush everyone got from Queen.
That's not a show we're going to see the likes of again I don't think.
Not till Wyld Stalion's finally pulls it together at least.
(never looked at any reviews for face the music, I enjoyed it and that's what's important to me)

Madonna's Summer Song -- Holiday
An artist’s first hit! For some it’s also their last hit. For some talented artists, it’s the first of many. But, there’s a lot that the first hit often tells you about the artist. Consider Madonna’s first hit “Holiday”. Madonna was living in New York and frequented nightclubs to get disc jockeys to play her demo songs. Mark Kamins a DJ at Danceteria (and friend of Madonna) arranged a meeting for her with Seymour Stein of Sire Records (part of Warner Brothers). He gave her a three single deal, with an option for an album. Her singles cracked the top 10 in Billboard’s “Hot Dance Club Songs” chart. With that success, Warner Brothers hired a producer and they began to cobble together the album that would become her first, the self-titled “Madonna”.
Madonna was unhappy with the way the album was progressing and the way the songs were moving away from the sparser beat-based form of the original demos. This is the fork in the road where things changed. As a New York dance club aficionado Madonna asked John Benitez the DJ from The Fun House to do some remixing of the tracks. The Fun House was a 26th Street Manhattan dance club, with a decidedly anti-Studio 54 club vibe, full of younger less affluent clientele. Benitez knew the pulse of the city’s youth. Nicknamed “Jellybean” because of his initials, he remixed her singles “Burning Up”, “Borderline” and “Lucky Star”. They needed one more song for the album and “Jellybean” knew of the song “Holiday” written by Curtis Hudson and Lisa Stevens-Crowder for their own musical act Pure Energy. They refused at first, but agreed after meeting with Madonna. Again, another game changing moment. Benitez then produced the track.
Released in August 1983 “Holiday” hit #1 a month later on Billboard’s “Dance Club Songs” chart and then #16 on Billboard’s Top 100. It also hit #25 on Billboard’s “Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs” chart. By the time of Live Aid on July 13, 1985 Madonna was an international star with a #1 hit song, multiple top 5 songs and the title role in the movie “Desperately Seeking Susan”. But, with all that going for her, she reached back to her first big hit "Holiday" for her set at Live Aid. The huge crowd and the mood of the song and her “no auto-tune” singing makes it the very best version of a great song. It’s a great summer song!

Freddie Mercury of Queen - RIP Legend
This was Live Aid 1985 & Queen was THE band of the day, stealing the whole damned show.
Hell, to this day, Freddie continues to steal the show because of this & nobody will ever top the smile on Brian's face at seeing his friend have a blast with the crowd either. That day remains a happy memory for the surviving members of Queen, but no matter which reason they pick, Freddie having fun with the crowd will always be their moment of glory & one of the happiest memories they & all who attended that day will ever have. This keeps the memory of a dear friend alive for the band & the finest frontman in history alive for every musician & fan of the band.
what a legend

Today, on July 13th, 1985 - Queen Story!
London, UK, Wembley Stadium
'Live Aid'
"Of all Queen's 704 [actually 705] live performances, perhaps the most important was Live Aid. It enabled them to show that without all of their trappings, their own light, their own sound, the power of darkness, and only an 18 [actually 20] minute set, they were still able to conquer the world."
- BBC Radio One special

ALEX NEWPORT GOES ON RECORD CALLING POST-SEVENTIES SABBATH, A "LAUGHING STOCK." WAS HE WRONG?
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on guitarists/vocalists Max Cavalera and Alex Newport of industrial thrash/hardcore punk band NAILBOMB, c. mid 1990s. 📸: Kevin Estrada, and a horrifyingly mid '80s-looking BLACK SABBATH during Live Aid -- a "laughing stock" indeed in those hairstyles and fashion choices -- fucking yikes, man!
CHRONICLES OF CHAOS: "Seeing the reaction that the first album garnered the band, would they ever get back into NAILBOMB mode if the fans wanted it? A strong-willed Newport responds..."
ALEX NEWPORT: "No. Too many bands carry on too long and destroy all the great things about them. Look at BLACK SABBATH. They were at one point the greatest band of all and now they are a laughing stock and I think that is so sad."
